3 Basil- The fifth 4 legged pooch parented by The Wallaces over their 35 years of marriage. Basil and his humans give a big shout out for the support they've gotten from the GSquad and DWag crew.

4 Basil's late companion and best buddy Tasha, at home in Colorado. She was adopted from a local shelter and lived a full happy life with Basil, her other pooch siblings and the Wallace humans, until she passed from Cancer last year :(

6 Minnow says, "I know! I know! Send the one of me winking at the G Squad...that's what i'd do if I met them dog to dog, dog to person, dog to ... well you get my drift..."

7 Francesca is a canine of few words but she periodically remarks on her affinity for her fellow waggers and the squad.

8 Sharkey waxed poetic about times shared with her cyber family. She remarked that perhaps this internet thing was of some use and would really take off some day.

10 Ann, mom of Daily Wag regular Zoe, snapped this shot of Zoe engaged in some poolside "gardening."

11 Zoe's sister Precious can't quit understand what all the DW fuss is about but she remains supportive of Ann and Zoe for their loyalty to the squad.

12 T-Bone, another Zoe sibling, is anxious to get this photo session over with as he can smell the peanut butter hidden in the red toy that his stylist chose to accessorize the shot.

16 Sophia is the happy little fur-child of Marilyn B. who describes herself as, "certified dog lover of pugs."

17 And here is Sophia, lady of leisure, out for a round of golf on a warm Texas afternoon.

18 Delia with Senta in '56. Tabu joined Delia following her husband's departure to serve in Viet Nam. Fifi came to Delia in '76. Pepper was a barn cat that Delia had spayed and then took into her care.

19 In 1970 Delia found Pippa in a field all caught up in weeds. She cared for her until Pippa passed in 1982.

20 Kitty came to delia in 2008 and remains her devoted companion and Glue Squad member today. Arabian Stallion, Ibn was a foal when Delia got him in '79. He was loyal and had the personality of a lap dog. He lived to the age of 29.

21 Little Noella arrived on Christmas of '85, hence her name. Oreo, a barn cat adopted by Delia, joined the crew around that same time. Playmates Oreo and Noella showed many a sceptic that felines and canines can in fact be the best of buds.

22 When helping me to choose photos of some of her siblings, Minnow, not so subtly, chose only shots that also featured her little mug... coincidence? I think not. Here she is snuggling with big sister Luna.

23 Big Suprise....Here is the one Minnow felt best represented her feline brother Max. You see the pattern I'm talking about yes?

24 When Minnow went out to relieve herself, I managed to snap this one of her sister Luna. Sneaky mom!

25 The legendary Miss Pickles is surely watching over the Glue Squad and sending good vibes to loyal DWaggers.

The photos pretty much say it all, but I thought I'd share some sentiments sent from two Glue Squad member to all of you! Lynn's and Karen's heartfelt words illustrate how the human-animal bond can foster a bond between fellow humans as well.

Hello Dr. Pia,
I am Maddox, handsome father of GK.
After I retired from the show circuit, I started commenting on a regular basis on The Daily Wag. I got to be friends with and to care deeply for the regulars. I noticed how we all supported one another regarding health issues, behavior or when one of us did something very good too.

I came up with The Glue Squad name. I said that no matter what, we stick together like glue. We are there for the other members for the good and the bad. I hope that there will be Glue Squad Chapters that spring up all over the country. It doesn't cost a dime to truly care about and support one another and it makes you feel all warm inside and as Martha would say, "that is a good thing". Hehehehehe

Hello Dr. Pia,
Thank you so very much for your devotion to animal adoption. In my entire life so far, they was only a period of about 8 months between dogs that I have ever not had a companion. Basil is the first small dog I have ever been around and he warmed into our hearts right away. In 35 years of marriage Basil is our 5th companion of the 4 legged nature.

It seems clear that a shared commitment to the well being of our animal companions can traverse great distances- via cyber space-leading to the amazing community of humans and dogs alike who convene here at the Daily Wag.

I for one, am honored to be among such caring souls- And I know my sentiments are shared by F, S and GK. Thanks so much to all of you for supporting us, each other and our fellow creatures.

What an amazing day it was- made extra special by the 2, 3 and 4 legged souls who took part! Everyone’s commitment to the animals made a seemingly tough task go as smoothly as the fur on a cat's nose!

Phibbs transformation of a tiny exam room into a pop up 'cat walk' wasn't the only demonstration of a resourceful approach to maximizing space! The Humane Society of NY- including it's busy walk-in veterinary clinic- occupies a narrow 5 floor building in midtown Manhattan.

The staff and shelter volunteers make efficient use of every inch they have. And they do so with a mind towards making the animal residents as comfortable as possible while they await adoption into a loving home.

What I found most notable about the staff and volunteers was their positive attitude and willingness to go the extra mile for the critters. Sadly this kind of spirit can be hard to maintain amidst the gravity of the pet overpopulation crisis. But there was no lack of hope running through the veins of these dedicated Manhattan professionals.

Phibbs and his crew mirrored the staff’s dedication as they rolled on the shelter floor with squeeky toys to get the best angle for a shot of their furry muse! Phibbs kept the shoot on a steady pace in an effort to photograph as many needy faces as he could. Changing lighting and lenses was punctuated by calls from couture designers and top selling magazine editors competing to schedule Phibbs for a heavy hitting project!

Witnessing Phibbs and his crew devote equal effort to the shelter and it’s animals - clients who couldn't even begin to generate the kind of fees Phibbs talent commands... told the story best. If anyone needed Phibb’s caliber of PR and an eye towards revealing a soul’s inner beauty- it was the loyal animals who had suffered from their human’s misfortunes. These former family pets needed a head shot and a good publicist –Phibbs provided both.

These are the moments that define a person. Like Phibbs, we each must retain some perspective on things that matter if we are to fulfill our fullest potential.

On behalf or the animals at The Humane Society of New York, and those in shelters everywhere... I extend heartfelt gratitude to Richard Phibbs and his crew.

Having been granted this very special 'snapshot' of one man’s dedication, leaves me with a renewed commitment to our fellow creatures. Thousands of worthy companions go unseen each and every day in our nation's shelters . They urgently need us to apply our respective talents to their plight- their lives depend on it. Only then will they get a chance to receive the love they so deserve.

Let's follow Phibb's example and join forces to get these loyal souls seen and saved.

First, it was the photography in The Unexpected Pit Bull Calendar I mentioned a few weeks back. From there I learned of HeARTs Speak, an amazing organization of artists committed to helping animals - join!

Then, on a recent trip with some friends and our dogs, I was bitten by the photography bug myself - so much so, that I began barking lingo at everyone as though I was a professional photographer..."People! People! Focus...Work with me...I'm losing light...losing light here folks "

Upon my return, a friend contacted me about renowned photographer, Richard Phibbs, who recently volunteered his time to help shelter animals in New York. Armed with the eye of an artist and the heart of a true advocate, Phibbs set out to apply his talent to a worthy cause...or in this case, 12 worthy causes...

Father of rescued pooch Huck (see gallery above), Phibbs regulary snaps portraits of celebrities like Toby Maguire, Moby, and Anderson Cooper (also animal advocates, by the way) to name a few. But for Phibbs, his day at the Humane Society of New York proved to be one of the most rewarding yet. Here is what he had to say about it first hand...

"A friend sent me a video about a fellow photographer, Teresa Berg (a member of HeARTs Speak), who helped a rescue group by taking more appealing pictures of the dogs and suddenly adoption success increased significantly. I contacted her and she completely inspired me to do the same."

"I am always wanting to take a picture that does more than sell clothes of promote someone's acting career...Teresa's idea spoke to me. In my travels around the world I am constantly shocked at the volume of suffering of animals on our planet."

Shelter staff worked with Phibbs to create a little studio out of an examination room. Some squeeky toys, a tie and a few scarves, helped Richard interact with the animals and discover what qualities made them each special and unique.

With regard to the experience Phibbs said, "It brought about all sorts of feelings. I had some fear walking in but then was inspired by the wonderful people that work there. The animals we photographed that day were the more difficult ones to place as many have special needs. Each of them was so different and special. A few of the dogs were blind and I felt particular compassion for those pups."

Richard Phibbs eloquently summed up his experience, "With each unique animal I photographed one sees the best of humanity - the people that work tirelessly at the shelter- and the the worst of humanity- the unevolved people who once abused, neglected or abandoned their animal friend."

Phibb's wanted to, "...Shed light on how beautiful and valuable shelter animals are- they should be coveted and honored. Shelter animals are not damaged goods- they are rather unique and can be wonderful additions to you family if you give them a chance."

Phibbs adds, "For me personally, my dog reminds me daily to smell the air." Phibbs hopes his efforts will help to both secure homes for the animals he met that day, as well as to educate others on the plight of shelter animals overall.

Perhaps our efforts will land Phibbs the honor of photographing them each with a new backdrop - a loving adoptive family! That way he'd get to witness his success in helping others to see these souls as he sees them...perfect little masterpieces...in every way.

Some of my human girlfriends and I got away for a few days to a fabulously hip mid-century modern abode in the desert. It was a BYOAP of sorts... bring your own adopted pooch(s). Or maybe it was a BYOAH...Bring your own adoptive human...Hmmm...Hard to say which it was... Depends who you ask...

In any event, a good time was truly had by all. And it was the first time that Guppy and Minnow got to see one another since being saved over a year ago! As some of you may recall, soon after I adopted Minnow, we learned of Gus, or "A1118656" (soon to be Guppy), who came into the shelter at the same time as my Minnow. They looked just alike and had similar details in their Adopt-a-Pet.com profiles. They had both been recovering in shelter's medical ward at the same time but Guppy had been left behind .

Weeks had passed since I got Minnow and we feared the worst. With advocates Shawne and Leigh on board to foster Guppy (and eventually adopt him)- we rushed to find out his fate!

Luckily we were able to find him and bring the family back together! Now Minnow and Guppy each had a new family and forever home!

While we can never be certain if they are related- these two definitely seem more interested in each other than they do in other pooches. I know us humans can be biased in how we view things at times- but I must say, there did seem to be an immediate connection between Guppy and Minnow when we first put them together - and it was still going strong when they reconnected recently-over a year later! Whatever it is... we are thrilled they are both safe and sound in the kind of homes that every critter deserves.

In many ways Minnow saved Guppy. In fact, anyone who corrects the myths and spreads the word about these amazing shelter animals is saving more worthy little souls. I like to think of us all as their advocates...or "Minnows for Guppies..." Perhaps we should organize and 'march on Washington' with that motto....

Better yet- let's spread the word about the little treasures in need of homes in more viral ways- eg post a search box right on your website where people can search for a shelter animal in their area, or link your Facebook page to a new critter profile each day. Foster for a rescue group if you can, and help others to find their new best buddy at a shelter or rescue group.

Everyone benefits from some positive 'petworking!' Maybe I should call it "The Minnow Effect"...kinda catchy no?

1 Bullseye - Phoenix, Az. Bullseye is the cutest thing. He is super playful and loves to wrestle with other dogs, great with kids, fun and adorable.

2 Bubbles - Hopkinton, Mass. Bubbles is a fabulous young dog. She gets along with other dogs, cats, and children. Bubbles is excited to meet everyone. She loves to play and receive attention. Sadly she was given up by her humans due to financial strain. She is hoping to find a home she can fill with love and joy!

3 Zoom & Dexter - Chicago, Il. Zoom and Dexter are a healthy, cuddly, friendly and lovable, pair looking for a loving home together. These faithful friends were left homeless when a couple divorced and neither could take them :( They are very adaptable and are great with other cats, dogs and children of all ages. 4 Bubba - Warren, N.J. Bubba who is a very, very friendly French bulldog. He was given up due to a divorce :) He is trying to remain hopeful and wants nothing more than a loving family to care for him forever.

5 Beauty - Orlando, Fla. Beauty is already spayed and up to date with shots. She is a bit on the shy side and would welcome a home with another dog companion (preferably male) to help her feel at home.

We all know that it's easy to can get caught up in the season's decorating fun and festivities- but, many holiday items can be hazardous to our furry family members. Be sure to check out the adoptable sweethearts in today's gallery- perhaps you can help them find a loving home by New Year's?

Avoiding the hazards on the list below makes it easier to decorate in a manner that is fun and safe for the entire family! And you never know what Dasher, Prancer and Dancer might get into when they stop by, so best to play it safe for the sake of all of our fellow creatures!

Some holiday hazards include:

Holiday plants:
Mistletoe, Holly and Ivy are extremely poisonous when nibbled or ingested.
Poinsettias are also hazardous as their leaves and sap can be toxic and cause severe intestinal distress.
Hibiscus can cause vomiting or blooding if ingested
Because there are so many hybrids of the above plants each year, it is best to keep them out of reach or just avoid them altogether.
Christmas greens such as balsam, juniper, cedar, and fir have some toxicity to them so can pose risks as well.

Bones from a holiday Turkey:
Do not feed bones to your furry kids. Not only are they choking hazards but, bone chips and fragments can lodge in the intestines and be very dangerous.

Holiday tree:
Preservatives used in the water for a tree stand can cause intestinal upsets- best bet is not to use such preparations. Avoid sugar and aspirin additives in the water as well. Pesticides used on the tree can also seep into the water so be sure furry family cannot get to the tree water to drink it.

Ingested pine needles can be somewhat toxic and irritate or puncture your companion animal's intestines. Be sure to clean up dry or stray needles as they fall.

Ornaments and Decorations:
String objects like tinsel and ribbon, are to be kept away from companion animals. They can wrap around intestines or ball up in the stomach causing obstructions.
Angel hair (often made of spun glass) can cause severe irritation to skin and eyes irritation and is hazardous if ingested.
Artificial spray snow can be toxic if inhaled or otherwise ingested.
Metal ornament hooks can get caught in playful paws or ingested. Twine or yarn can be used instead to affix ornaments to the tree.

Bubbling holiday lights contain methylene chloride fluid which can be dangerous if inhaled or ingested.

Antifreeze is a huge hazard at this time of year- it tastes sweet to animals so they tend to lick it. Always be sure to clean any such leaks up right away. It poses a sever risk to wildlife and other area animals.

Fireplaces that utilize fire salts present hazards if the salts are ingested-symptoms can include gastrointestinal distress, vomiting, convulsions and other sequelea.

Tying ribbons on a furry family member's neck should be avoided as they can get stuck on objects and potentially choke themselves.

Electric cords can be a hazard to puppies, kittens and bunnies as they may chew them. Keep them secured and out of reach. Also best to unplug them entirely when not in use.

Candles can always be a fire hazard if pushed over by a curious kitty or wagging tail.

Hazardous human foods include: Chocolate, grapes, raisins, avocados, Macadamia nuts, onions or onion powder, garlic, caffeinated drinks, alcohol, cooked bones, fish bones, moldy or spoiled food, and raw yeast dough.
Products sweetened with xylitol are extremely toxic. This sweetener is often found in chewing gum and mints. Any such ingestion requires immediate medical attention.

Other potential harmful substances include ice melting products, liquid potpourri, mothballs and those 'stay fresh pouches' that often come in shoe boxes and gifts. Use caution with all of the above and if an animal ingests any of these potentially fatal items CALL YOUR VET IMMEDIATELY.

I can never overstate the importance of keeping updated tags on all companion animals. Microchipping is also important. All pets should have at least two forms of ID on them at all times. Our nations shelters are filled with lost family pets who no one anticipated would ever get lost. It is tragic and a tag is such an easy safeguard to provide.

Many people travel over the holidays, leaving furry family with a neighbor, petsitter or friend- this is often when animals escape or get lost. It is critical to always have proper ID on them. You might consider getting a tag that includes your pet sitter's or neighbor's name and number if you are going to be unreachable while away.

Whether or not you know, live with, or love, a pittie pooch is almost irrelevant- The Unexpected Pit Bull Calendar (UPBC) fits the bill for a broad spectrum of giftees on your list. I can practically real off a list of perfect UPBC recipients in my sleep...

Anyone who has: ...known or loved an animal companion, adopted a furry family member, felt misunderstood themselves, taken up for the underdog, been a victim of prejudice, needed an advocate at some point, been a loyal friend, brought joy to others, appreciated great photography, needed a second chance, helped educate and change misperceptions, taken a risk, set out to make a difference, advocated for fairness, given voice to the voiceless, had a loyal companion... Their members have contributed the photographs that grace our calendar pages this year, creating an energy we are certain you will love."

Adopting a companion animal in need of rescue provides a fertile opportunity to teach important values to children. The decision to devote your resources and care to an animal in need sends a very clear message about who you are as a family and what you stand for.

1 Adopting a companion animal in need, both saves a life and allows a child to feel important in the life of another.

2 Children need to be given opportunities to make a positive impact on others and the world.

3 Caring for a companion animal is the first parenting experience for most children.

4 Children learn far more from what we do than what we say- so modeling compassion and responsibility is the key to fostering such ethics in a child.

5 It also lays the groundwork for developing empathy and an awareness for the experience of others- human and non-human alike.

6 Encouraging children to value all creatures, rather than place them in a hierarchy of worth, is critical to understanding the concepts of justice and equality.

7 Encouraging children to be open minded and not judge others based on appearances, fear or stereotypes, is fundamental to all social justice issues.

8 Offering a home to an older animal who has lost her human is both gratifying and conveys the importance of valuing others regardless of age or appearance.

9 Adopting a special needs animal teaches children about resilience, patience and strength to overcome obstacles.

10 Adopting a companion animal who has suffered or had a hard life teaches about forgiveness. It also offers children hope and allows them to experience making a positive impact.

11 Adopting a bonded pair of animals so they can stay together teaches the importance of companionship and sticking together through adversity...

Personal Responsibility...
It is through this experience that a child internalizes important values- "We are a family with an important choice to make, and we are going to use the power of this choice to save a life." This teaches kids about personal responsibility and their ability to effect the larger community as they make choices in life.

Children need to feel they can have have an impact on their world. We need to give them opportunities to do so in positive, pro-social ways. Adopting and properly caring for an animal can plant the seeds for that ethic.

The Importance of Planning and Commitment...
Conducting a family meeting to determine if you can meet an animal's needs, is a good place to start. You should explore issues such as whether a landlord permits animals, how much exercise the animal needs, how to provide for medical care, who will be responsible for feeding, training and walks, who will care for the animal on vacations, whether you have imminent plans to move, etc. Such a conversation conveys the importance of planning for the long term, navigating potential obstacles and committing to get through them-- for better or worse-- is an important step in conveying to your children, the inherent value of this new family member's life and wellbeing.

Answering these initial questions will also help determine what sort of animal would be a good match for your family. Don't hesitate to enroll the help of a local rescue group in making this decision.

Acceptance of Others...
The decision around which animal companion to adopt can provide for fruitful debates about your family's values. Perhaps yours is a family who is willing to provide a home to an older pet who has found himself in a shelter due to a move. Or perhaps you are willing to provide for a cat who has lost an eye or even a limb. This conveys that you see past age and physical 'limitations' and can appreciate another being's inherent worth. This teaches about acceptance and offers children a chance to witness the inspiring resilience in all animals.

Remaining Open Minded and Ignoring Stereotypes...
Perhaps your family is willing to provide a home for a pit bull or other breed disadvantaged by misconceptions and negative stereotypes. This teaches kids about pre-conceptions and difference. It also encourages them to learn for themselves and not buy into a public perception that may be biased or misinformed.

Shared Understanding...
Finally, for kids who are adopted themselves, adopting a pet provides an opportunity to talk about their feelings while also confirming a family's positive regard for others in need. Similarly, for a child who is hearing impaired, or who has a condition such as diabetes, adopting an animal with a similar condition, or other special needs (provided the resources exist to properly manage it), can be therapeutic and enriching for all involved.

There is no limit to the great lessons that you can teach when you opt to adopt. It benefits all involved and lives on in the growing minds of the children who participate. The ripple effect of this family activity will undoubtedly foster compassion for generations to come!

While I too have played 'stage mom' to a critter or two, I am only in support of this when the critter-to-be-outfitted is consenting to their human's antics. And as we all know- many a pooch is less than thrilled to walk the runway in costume. Needless to say, such descent should always be honored.

That said, my dear friend Faye, whose wonderful rescue work has been the topic of many a blog post, has a knack for getting her fur kids to play along with a doting mom at holiday time. So once again, I am sharing her amateur stylist efforts with my fellow Daily Waggers. I know you will appreciate Faye's commitment to fashion.

And for these rescued critters willing to shed some pride for mom's enjoyment- I know Faye's little subjects are just happy to return some of the joy that Faye has brought them by adopting them into her loving home and family.

1 Roger was a regal fellow. He would wait patiently to greet Dave at the top of the stairs.

2 Dave would then bend down so Roger could climb up on his shoulder... Roger had a calm and loving demeanor.

3 Roger enjoyed sitting in high places and watching the antics of those around him.

4 Just after Dave brought Roger home for the first time, he settled in as if he’d been there all along. Fortunately he was accepted by the rest of his furry family immediately and without incident.

5 Roger was content just to be with Dave. He knew he was loved.

Roger and Dave...

Roger- a tiny orange kitten- scared and hungry- somehow found himself stuck high in a tree on a blustery winter day many years ago. The skies were growing darker and there was not a home for miles… other than Dave’s.

For Dave, the tumultuous weather on that day seemed calm in comparison to the storm inside his head and heart. He was in the midst of a painful divorce, working long hours and managing feelings of distrust and disillusionment.

There is little explanation for how the tiny meow, of a then nameless kitten, made its way to Dave's ears that day- but it did.

From that day forward, the little feline- soon to be known as Roger- took a place in Dave's home where he remained a calming force in an otherwise busy life.

Roger was an old soul of sorts. He was calm and wise- but certainly not meek or timid. He seemed to embody the kind of balance many of us seek in life.

For the years that followed, Roger and Dave provided a touchstone to one another. Roger called on Dave in gentle ways and enrolled Dave’s nurturing at times when Dave needed connection most. One might say they were very much in 'sync.'

Fortunately Roger had a long happy life. But as so many of us know first hand, the grief of a companion animal's passing is often complicated and hard to bare. There are few, if any, relationships as unique as those we have with our animal companions.

We love these little souls with a depth that is hard to quantify or explain. As a predominantly verbal species, we humans tend to connect with others through words. In fact, many find it uncomfortable to remain silent in the company of another human. But with our non-human animal friends, we connect in more intuitive ways. We depend on our other senses and nothing needs explanation or justification. We quietly connect, co-exist, and exchange bids for affection. We still communicate and seek to understand one another, but we do most of it non-verbally.

In many ways our animal companions access a part of us that is not limited by what words seek to define. And as such- our feelings upon their passing also cannot be contained by, or expressed in, words.

We FEEL their absence in the truest sense. Literally experiencing a void by our feet or where they used to nap. We take pause when reflex has us breaking off a piece of toast to share with our now absent furry friend. We still open that shade to let the sun shine on their favorite napping spot....

And we miss the similar offerings they made to us... rubbing up against our leg when we felt alone, curling up in the nook of our elbow when we felt under the weather- poking us on the head when we were meant to wake up... and often reminding us to be present and take stock of life’s simple pleasures.

Dave reflected on many such moments in which Roger would call his attention to a slower pace, a moment in time- a patch of sun. He recalled offering himself as a bridge for Roger- Dave would lower his shoulder for Roger to step up on and transport him from one high perch to another. Sometimes this was to help Roger avoid a rambunctious foster kitty who was visiting. Other times it was simply to help Roger take in another view. They were bonded and they conversed with one another- intuitively. Their connection was a strong and enduring one.

Dave and Roger were good to each other and I have to believe that nature has a way of preserving such a deep connection in ways we may not yet understand.

Here’s hoping all of our companions who have passed away are enjoying peace from their new perch.
