Delia with Senta in '56. Tabu joined Delia following her husband's departure to serve in Viet Nam. Fifi came to Delia in '76. Pepper was a barn cat that Delia had spayed and then took into her care.

The photos pretty much say it all, but I thought I'd share some sentiments sent from two Glue Squad member to all of you! Lynn's and Karen's heartfelt words illustrate how the human-animal bond can foster a bond between fellow humans as well.

Hello Dr. Pia,
I am Maddox, handsome father of GK.
After I retired from the show circuit, I started commenting on a regular basis on The Daily Wag. I got to be friends with and to care deeply for the regulars. I noticed how we all supported one another regarding health issues, behavior or when one of us did something very good too.

I came up with The Glue Squad name. I said that no matter what, we stick together like glue. We are there for the other members for the good and the bad. I hope that there will be Glue Squad Chapters that spring up all over the country. It doesn't cost a dime to truly care about and support one another and it makes you feel all warm inside and as Martha would say, "that is a good thing". Hehehehehe

Hello Dr. Pia,
Thank you so very much for your devotion to animal adoption. In my entire life so far, they was only a period of about 8 months between dogs that I have ever not had a companion. Basil is the first small dog I have ever been around and he warmed into our hearts right away. In 35 years of marriage Basil is our 5th companion of the 4 legged nature.

Since Basil and I have joined the Daily Wag conversations on the blog, we have had many, many smiles and laughs. We learn a lot, and share a lot, and feel although we have never met, all the Glue Squad and you Dr. Pia, help us through each day. We are very lucky and fortunate to be a part of this group. Thanks to Martha and her staff and to you. The photo of Tasha (Basil's late best buddy) is doing what she loved most, fetching. She was a Black Lab Mix, adopted from a nearby shelter. Basil is a Tiger, Brindle French Bulldog.

Basil has survived many health issues with the help of an excellent doctor, but I believe his buddies on The Daily Wag, and all their paws crossed and prayers have been something that has kept Basil and I going. We love you all!!!

What an amazing day it was- made extra special by the 2, 3 and 4 legged souls who took part! Everyone’s commitment to the animals made a seemingly tough task go as smoothly as the fur on a cat's nose!

Phibbs transformation of a tiny exam room into a pop up 'cat walk' wasn't the only demonstration of a resourceful approach to maximizing space! The Humane Society of NY- including it's busy walk-in veterinary clinic- occupies a narrow 5 floor building in midtown Manhattan.

The staff and shelter volunteers make efficient use of every inch they have. And they do so with a mind towards making the animal residents as comfortable as possible while they await adoption into a loving home.

What I found most notable about the staff and volunteers was their positive attitude and willingness to go the extra mile for the critters. Sadly this kind of spirit can be hard to maintain amidst the gravity of the pet overpopulation crisis. But there was no lack of hope running through the veins of these dedicated Manhattan professionals.

Phibbs and his crew mirrored the staff’s dedication as they rolled on the shelter floor with squeeky toys to get the best angle for a shot of their furry muse! Phibbs kept the shoot on a steady pace in an effort to photograph as many needy faces as he could. Changing lighting and lenses was punctuated by calls from couture designers and top selling magazine editors competing to schedule Phibbs for a heavy hitting project!

Witnessing Phibbs and his crew devote equal effort to the shelter and it’s animals - clients who couldn't even begin to generate the kind of fees Phibbs talent commands... told the story best. If anyone needed Phibb’s caliber of PR and an eye towards revealing a soul’s inner beauty- it was the loyal animals who had suffered from their human’s misfortunes. These former family pets needed a head shot and a good publicist –Phibbs provided both.

These are the moments that define a person. Like Phibbs, we each must retain some perspective on things that matter if we are to fulfill our fullest potential.

On behalf or the animals at The Humane Society of New York, and those in shelters everywhere... I extend heartfelt gratitude to Richard Phibbs and his crew.

Having been granted this very special 'snapshot' of one man’s dedication, leaves me with a renewed commitment to our fellow creatures. Thousands of worthy companions go unseen each and every day in our nation's shelters . They urgently need us to apply our respective talents to their plight- their lives depend on it. Only then will they get a chance to receive the love they so deserve.

Let's follow Phibb's example and join forces to get these loyal souls seen and saved.

As I've said before, I personally find it an honor to be told I look like someone's 'fur kid.' And I'm quite thrilled when I meet a four-legger who shares my name. But for those who may not share my sentiments about such comparisons, please know that I mean no offense to anyone. It's all in good fun!

First, it was the photography in The Unexpected Pit Bull Calendar I mentioned a few weeks back. From there I learned of HeARTs Speak, an amazing organization of artists committed to helping animals - join!

Then, on a recent trip with some friends and our dogs, I was bitten by the photography bug myself - so much so, that I began barking lingo at everyone as though I was a professional photographer..."People! People! Focus...Work with me...I'm losing light...losing light here folks "

Upon my return, a friend contacted me about renowned photographer, Richard Phibbs, who recently volunteered his time to help shelter animals in New York. Armed with the eye of an artist and the heart of a true advocate, Phibbs set out to apply his talent to a worthy cause...or in this case, 12 worthy causes...

Father of rescued pooch Huck (see gallery above), Phibbs regulary snaps portraits of celebrities like Toby Maguire, Moby, and Anderson Cooper (also animal advocates, by the way) to name a few. But for Phibbs, his day at the Humane Society of New York proved to be one of the most rewarding yet. Here is what he had to say about it first hand...

"A friend sent me a video about a fellow photographer, Teresa Berg (a member of HeARTs Speak), who helped a rescue group by taking more appealing pictures of the dogs and suddenly adoption success increased significantly. I contacted her and she completely inspired me to do the same."

"I am always wanting to take a picture that does more than sell clothes of promote someone's acting career...Teresa's idea spoke to me. In my travels around the world I am constantly shocked at the volume of suffering of animals on our planet."

Shelter staff worked with Phibbs to create a little studio out of an examination room. Some squeeky toys, a tie and a few scarves, helped Richard interact with the animals and discover what qualities made them each special and unique.

With regard to the experience Phibbs said, "It brought about all sorts of feelings. I had some fear walking in but then was inspired by the wonderful people that work there. The animals we photographed that day were the more difficult ones to place as many have special needs. Each of them was so different and special. A few of the dogs were blind and I felt particular compassion for those pups."

Richard Phibbs eloquently summed up his experience, "With each unique animal I photographed one sees the best of humanity - the people that work tirelessly at the shelter- and the the worst of humanity- the unevolved people who once abused, neglected or abandoned their animal friend."

Phibb's wanted to, "...Shed light on how beautiful and valuable shelter animals are- they should be coveted and honored. Shelter animals are not damaged goods- they are rather unique and can be wonderful additions to you family if you give them a chance."

Phibbs adds, "For me personally, my dog reminds me daily to smell the air." Phibbs hopes his efforts will help to both secure homes for the animals he met that day, as well as to educate others on the plight of shelter animals overall.

According to Megan's husband Shawn,

Megan agreed,

7 Megan agreed, "I was able to get candid answers to my questions about Stanley's temperament, compatibility and previous training. Because he was nearly full grown, I was also able to get a realistic sense of his size and nature."

Megan shared,

8 Megan shared, "I got tons of first hand information from Stanley's foster mom and ultimately I was able give the adoption a trial run before making things official."

Megan added,

9 Megan added, "The rescue group who had Stanley in foster offered advice on how to best to introduce Stanley to the kids."

According to Megan, Stanley was already potty-trained and neutered. She added,

Megan said,

11 Megan said, "The rescue group came to our home to assure it was safe for Stanley as he was known to jump over fences when given the chance."

Having worked in rescue herself, Megan shared,

12 Having worked in rescue herself, Megan shared, "When the rescue group requested that we raise the height of our fence- I wasn't sure what to think- but I took a second and realized it was not a personal afront but rather a safety precaution for Stanley.."

When asked what stands out about Stanley, Megan remarked,

13 When asked what stands out about Stanley, Megan remarked, "He is so patient and doesn't even try to steal food from the kids! And they are the perfect height for him to try!"

Megan,

14 Megan, "The kids are so in love with Stanley- they make sure everyone knows, 'Stanley is a rescue.' They may not fully understand the concept, but they DO understand that he needed a home and we became his family. They are proud of that."

On a recent trip to California, I got to visit with my dear friend Megan and to meet the dog she refers to as, "The missing piece of our family." In addition to many other shared experiences, Megan was right by my side when she and I headed to New Orleans to participate in the post-Katrina animal rescue some years ago.

Megan is as true an animal advocate as one can be. She, and her husband Shawn, are modeling the values of compassion and personal responsibility for their boys.

Having grown up with dogs herself, Megan knows the value of bringing a dog in to the family and getting to experience the kind of connection and responsibility a companion animal can offer a child. It is also important to her that her boys learn to respect and help others in need. As a psychologist, Megan also knows that children learn and internalize values by watching the actions of the adults around them.

It is for these reasons that Megan and Shawn were certain that if they were to add a dog to the family, it would need to be by way of adoption. They wanted to offer a home to a dog in need of one and to teach their boys how important it is to respond to the needs of one you have committed to care for.

I, for one, would say they have indeed achieved these admirable goals. Having been given a firm foundation by mom and dad (...and Stanley), It will now be up to little Thomas and Jack to make use of such teachings in a way that represents their respective interpretation and experience of caring for brother Stanley.

Some of my human girlfriends and I got away for a few days to a fabulously hip mid-century modern abode in the desert. It was a BYOAP of sorts... bring your own adopted pooch(s). Or maybe it was a BYOAH...Bring your own adoptive human...Hmmm...Hard to say which it was... Depends who you ask...

In any event, a good time was truly had by all. And it was the first time that Guppy and Minnow got to see one another since being saved over a year ago! As some of you may recall, soon after I adopted Minnow, we learned of Gus, or "A1118656" (soon to be Guppy), who came into the shelter at the same time as my Minnow. They looked just alike and had similar details in their Adopt-a-Pet.com profiles. They had both been recovering in shelter's medical ward at the same time but Guppy had been left behind :( .

Weeks had passed since I got Minnow and we feared the worst. With advocates Shawne and Leigh on board to foster Guppy (and eventually adopt him)- we rushed to find out his fate!

Luckily we were able to find him and bring the family back together! Now Minnow and Guppy each had a new family and forever home!

While we can never be certain if they are related- these two definitely seem more interested in each other than they do in other pooches. I know us humans can be biased in how we view things at times- but I must say, there did seem to be an immediate connection between Guppy and Minnow when we first put them together - and it was still going strong when they reconnected recently-over a year later! Whatever it is... we are thrilled they are both safe and sound in the kind of homes that every critter deserves.

In many ways Minnow saved Guppy. In fact, anyone who corrects the myths and spreads the word about these amazing shelter animals is saving more worthy little souls. I like to think of us all as their advocates...or "Minnows for Guppies..." Perhaps we should organize and 'march on Washington' with that motto....

Better yet- let's spread the word about the little treasures in need of homes in more viral ways- eg post a search box right on your website where people can search for a shelter animal in their area, or link your Facebook page to a new critter profile each day. Foster for a rescue group if you can, and help others to find their new best buddy at a shelter or rescue group.

Everyone benefits from some positive 'petworking!' Maybe I should call it "The Minnow Effect"...kinda catchy no?

We all know that it's easy to can get caught up in the season's decorating fun and festivities- but, many holiday items can be hazardous to our furry family members. Be sure to check out the adoptable sweethearts in today's gallery- perhaps you can help them find a loving home by New Year's?

Avoiding the hazards on the list below makes it easier to decorate in a manner that is fun and safe for the entire family! And you never know what Dasher, Prancer and Dancer might get into when they stop by, so best to play it safe for the sake of all of our fellow creatures!

Some holiday hazards include:

Holiday plants:
Mistletoe, Holly and Ivy are extremely poisonous when nibbled or ingested.
Poinsettias are also hazardous as their leaves and sap can be toxic and cause severe intestinal distress.
Hibiscus can cause vomiting or blooding if ingested
Because there are so many hybrids of the above plants each year, it is best to keep them out of reach or just avoid them altogether.
Christmas greens such as balsam, juniper, cedar, and fir have some toxicity to them so can pose risks as well.

Bones from a holiday Turkey:
Do not feed bones to your furry kids. Not only are they choking hazards but, bone chips and fragments can lodge in the intestines and be very dangerous.

Holiday tree:
Preservatives used in the water for a tree stand can cause intestinal upsets- best bet is not to use such preparations. Avoid sugar and aspirin additives in the water as well. Pesticides used on the tree can also seep into the water so be sure furry family cannot get to the tree water to drink it.

Ingested pine needles can be somewhat toxic and irritate or puncture your companion animal's intestines. Be sure to clean up dry or stray needles as they fall.

Ornaments and Decorations:
String objects like tinsel and ribbon, are to be kept away from companion animals. They can wrap around intestines or ball up in the stomach causing obstructions.
Angel hair (often made of spun glass) can cause severe irritation to skin and eyes irritation and is hazardous if ingested.
Artificial spray snow can be toxic if inhaled or otherwise ingested.
Metal ornament hooks can get caught in playful paws or ingested. Twine or yarn can be used instead to affix ornaments to the tree.

Bubbling holiday lights contain methylene chloride fluid which can be dangerous if inhaled or ingested.

Antifreeze is a huge hazard at this time of year- it tastes sweet to animals so they tend to lick it. Always be sure to clean any such leaks up right away. It poses a sever risk to wildlife and other area animals.

Fireplaces that utilize fire salts present hazards if the salts are ingested-symptoms can include gastrointestinal distress, vomiting, convulsions and other sequelea.

Tying ribbons on a furry family member's neck should be avoided as they can get stuck on objects and potentially choke themselves.

Electric cords can be a hazard to puppies, kittens and bunnies as they may chew them. Keep them secured and out of reach. Also best to unplug them entirely when not in use.

Candles can always be a fire hazard if pushed over by a curious kitty or wagging tail.

Hazardous human foods include: Chocolate, grapes, raisins, avocados, Macadamia nuts, onions or onion powder, garlic, caffeinated drinks, alcohol, cooked bones, fish bones, moldy or spoiled food, and raw yeast dough.
Products sweetened with xylitol are extremely toxic. This sweetener is often found in chewing gum and mints. Any such ingestion requires immediate medical attention.

Other potential harmful substances include ice melting products, liquid potpourri, mothballs and those 'stay fresh pouches' that often come in shoe boxes and gifts. Use caution with all of the above and if an animal ingests any of these potentially fatal items CALL YOUR VET IMMEDIATELY.

I can never overstate the importance of keeping updated tags on all companion animals. Microchipping is also important. All pets should have at least two forms of ID on them at all times. Our nations shelters are filled with lost family pets who no one anticipated would ever get lost. It is tragic and a tag is such an easy safeguard to provide.

Many people travel over the holidays, leaving furry family with a neighbor, petsitter or friend- this is often when animals escape or get lost. It is critical to always have proper ID on them. You might consider getting a tag that includes your pet sitter's or neighbor's name and number if you are going to be unreachable while away.

A gift is essentially defined as a token offered willingly with no expectation of payment or reciprocity.

Given this definition, gift-giving is something our companion animals do for us each and every day. Whether it's a grand welcome home, a comforting paw at the end of a trying day, a reminder that we are important and special to them- these 'gifts' are given freely and with genuine appreciation.

A physical present is often given as a means of honoring another and typically chosen with a mind toward what the gifter believes the recipient might appreciate or enjoy. Again our furry friends seem to get this concept quite well. When Fido gifts us his favorite stick, a muddy shoe or a well seasoned security blanket-it's clear he is offering something that has brought him great joy- is intended to bring you the same- and is therefore of great value.

So in this season of human gift giving- let's not overlook our loyal companions who are expert gift-givers every day of the year. Thankfully the furry ones on our gift lists can be the simplest to please- but take the time to really consider what they might truly enjoy or benefit from.

A gift made by you is often the best way to go for human and companion animal recipients alike. Because the gifter has taken the time to create it especially for the chosen recipient- it is by definition imbued with love, energy and intention.
