What's Going On With The Atlas Cedar Trees?

Posted by F&S

We have a grove of, what were beautiful, Atlas Cedar trees growing near the chicken coops.  Recently, the needles on these evergreens have been turning brown, which isn't a good thing.  We Frenchies, drove the Kawasaki down there to inspect.  Being the sleuths that we are, we discovered something very interesting!

Francesca, Martha is very concerned about this grouping of 8 Cedrus atlanticus, or Atlas Cedar trees that were planted a few years back.

These distinctive evergreens are supposed to look like this, with beautiful silvery-blue needles all year long.

As Ryan is pointing out, that is just not the case with our trees!

The Atlas Cedar is native to the Atlas Mountains of Algeria and Morocco and they can get quite tall and wide.

Clearly, these specimens are having a severe problem.

There are still some green needles, which may be a good sign.

In fact, the needles at the top of the trees seem somewhat normal. Perhaps there's still hope.

Sharkey, let's do a little research about the Atlas Cedar's plant hardiness. We've read that this specimen is hardy in zones 6 - 9 and this farm falls in zone 6, so that should be OK for these trees.

I don't know, Franny. Perhaps we should have a closer look.

If you study New York State and where Katonah is located in the yellow zone 6, we're awfully close to the green area, which is colder zone 5. It's been really frigid this winter and perhaps those cedars just can't stand it. Time will tell.

  • :-) I must say that tree species name is a mouth full! I sure hope you girls don't lose the tree, it does look sick!
The days are getting longer and I love that, so does Kitty.
We're getting a lot of birds, they are already looking for a nesting place, one chickadee keeps on going into Kitty's outside hut...not a good idea!
I want to paint again because of the daylight, but I have to wait till I get my Spring cleaning done...
Hope you all had a great weekend...mine was so-so ;-)

  • Good morning everyone,
I am hoping the Atlas Cedar trees will survive. They look a little like Karen does right now, run down and wilty looking. This winter has done a number on everything and everyone. But, with a name like Atlas, they just have to get stronger and get healthy again. I know, water them with that green health drink that Martha makes. That will do the trick.
Well, I guess I will have to check back later cause I want to hear what Rebel did for this birthday.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • The first thing that came to my mind was the arctic chill that has made many appearances this Winter.

Speaking of which, NH is headed for another blast of cold weather. Looks like for the rest of the week. Ugh.. And possibly more snow. Double Ugh! :)

Keep us updated on the plight of the trees.

  • Good Morning F & S

WOW that would be a shame if this nasty Polar Vortex killed off those big trees. This winter has been really cold for sure :(

I sure did enjoy this weekend it was so nice to lay out on the deck and catch some rays but mom tells me not to get use to it the cold is coming back this week and of course more white stuff YUK!!!

    Rebel how was your birthday?

    Zoe

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, First of all, I'm so glad that you sweet girls stayed in the Kawasaki and didn't wonder around those cedar trees in the snow! Hopefully you stayed warm being outside again! We have a big, much wider cedar tree and it does well because it doesn't get so freezing where we live very often! I forgot to tell you that I had some teeth removed just like Rutger did and I'm doing better, also! Sure hope you have a nice, warm and safe day and please hug GK for me again! Hi Delia, please hug Kitty for me! Maddox, sure hope it's warmer where you are very soon! Gail, sure hope your cold weather goes away very soon! Zoe, glad you were finally warm on the deck and hope it gets warmer soon! Hope to hear from all the rest of you buddies! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
Those poor trees. Looks a lot like our pine beetle trees in the mountains. Maddox, I think that is an excellent idea to feed them Martha's healthy drinks. I am anxious to hear about Rebel's birthday. Oh, and by the way Maddox again, I have been meaning to tell you that I love the name you thought up for some of the Glue Squad, The Littles. Does that mean we are The Littles and The Bigs? You aren't called the Professor for nothing.

Well, an incident occurred last night at midnight. We were are sleeping just fine, when it sounded like someone was trying to break into the house, from the chimney. It was one of the raccoons, and this guy was like superman trying to get in. Dad had the light in his eyes, and he was still trying to pull the grate off the chimney. I think the folks kicked the kids out of the nest and now they are looking for a nesting place. Mom was going BA NER CO, but I knew Dad and I would keep things under control. I didn't go outside, but Dad had to use this high pitched whistle to finally scare him away. I bet this isn't the last we hear him either. Well, everyone anxious to hear about your weekend, and hope you have a GEM of a Monday.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
It looks as if your trees aren’t doing good in the cold weather. First off it was Zoe freezing her butt off, then others falling in the ice and snow, next came the ice storm here, and finally it looks as if spring is around the corner and “bam” it’s cold again. I’m glad I have a good fur coat to keep warm in the cold. What am I saying? It was in the 70’s here the past two days. Anyone want to trade for a good warm coat? I know where you can get one really cheap.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Good morning ladies,
Whoo boy, the Cedars don't look too good. We had to remove 3 40 foot tall pines a couple of years ago. I'd like to think that Martha's green drink would help, but I'm just not so sure.
Well, my birthday weekend was just swell. We went on the road trip and I was so happy that I actually played with one of my toys! I didn't tell everybody, but I haven't been so good the last month. Not to worry, I'm pulling out of whatever ailed me. Well, I haven't been playing with my toys & the folks were so happy to see me toss my Gingerbread lady around. I had hoped that the folks would forget about my monthly bath, no such luck, but I must say, my coat is shiny and black.
Hey, Zoe, what about your ultra-sound? I'll go back and see if I missed a post.
Ruby, fire-dog, now you have to be a coonhound, too! They are rascals!
We had a beautiful fox "playing" with 6 geese out on the frozen lake. I think the fox gave up. Mimi says that I can't play with the fox.
    Have a great day all.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hello Sharkey, Francesca, Birthday Rebel boy and friends,
We had no computer for a few days so need to catch up on Glue Squad happenings. I hope those Atlas Cedar trees make it. The green special compost tea might be good for them, I am sure Ryan will help out with the girls supervising. Glad Rutger got his teeth done. I am finally starting to eat dry food again after my feline dental. I lost some weight but am playing again and getting into persian mischief.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY REBEL!!!! WE LOVE YOU BUDDY!!!
Zoe, we have lots of sunshine here so hope you are sunning down in New Jersey! Get ready for spring!
Glue Squad, we discovered that Abby looks a lot like a Chinese Happa Dog!!! The ancient dog that is the grandparent of the pekingnese and pug. Check out pictures, Mom said that would explain a lot!! Unfortunately, she may not be part french bulldog anymore. Pug/peke/happa dog.. its amazing.
Hope everyone had a great weekend! Purrrs to Kitty.
    James Dean the persian boy

  • Good morning, Francesca, Sharkey, Ryan and Glue Squad!
We agree, doesn't look good for those trees. Bummer. Of course this winter has been brutal....and it's not letting go any time soon.
Dudley, we hope you recuperate fast. Do you have to eat soft foods for a while? Ruby, yep, guess we need to add "mighty coon hunter" to your resume', right?
Brutus here....so Maddox are we The Biggies now? Sounds like a rap singer. Could be The Biggles. Nah.
Hey, Kirby, I feel your pain, man. 70 degrees and lots of fur is not a good thing.
Rebel, glad to here you are feeling better and you had a good birthday weekend.
We are with most of the east. That Polar Vortex is coming our way again this week. Highs in the 20's and lows in the single digits to below zero. Not much snow for us, though. Just read in the newspaper that the average high temp in January for southwestern Ohio was 23 degrees. Woozers, that's cold! That's 10 degrees below normal.
Must be off...there's sunshine now and we are going outside.
    Pugs and sunny kisses,
    Brutus and Max

  • Hello all you GS buddies:
Wow, those trees look a little sad, but if they still have some green needles they might yet be OK, we hope so! Well sunny today but getting cold again. We add our voices to the sick of snow chant, come on Spring (even though our Wiarton Willie was in total agreement with Punxsatawny Phil this year - 6 more weeks of winter.
Did anyone watch hockey on the Olympics this weekend? OMG we were jumping up and down, both ladies and men won gold!!!! Its what we do in Canada, we play hockey. We love to watch the hockey games, its our national pastime! Congrats to all the athletes that won anything, its a major accomplishment to get that far, regardless of if you win a medal or not. How about Glue Squad Olympics, we could have sports like herding, speed racing, swimming, donut eating (for George), toilet paper unrolling, escaping, barking, Frisbee playing, earth excavations, socializing .... the list goes on and on. Divide us into two teams, the Littles and the Biggies - what a day that would be. We could have celebrity judging and prizes for everyone. Just a thought. Anyways, gotta go catch some sun while it lasts, talk to everyone later, Riley boy.

  • Afternoon Girls & Glue Squad Buddies - Just a tad late in the day for me today. Sounds like Ryan and both of you will have to keep an eye out for all the Atlas Cedars and that Mother Nature takes good care of them to get them ready for the good weather. As everyone has mentioned, a special mixture of the green tea is needed. Rebel, sounds like you had a nice birthday. OMG, Ruby, good thing Dad scared that pesky raccoon, bet Mom was relieved. We had great weather over the weekend, we went on multiple long walks & it was great to be in the fresh air; then I got myself in the "infamous dog house" last night or should I say "infamous crate"..Mom WAS NOT happy with me at all; but I do have a cute face, right??? and when Dad let me out after a minute or so, I thought I better stay under the radar for the night. Guess it's back to basics again. Oh well, a day in the life of poor me :( ...Maddox, got any tips for me??

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo
