The Doves Are Growing Quickly!

Posted by Francesca

While Sharkey was having a rather intense nap yesterday, I felt like doing a little exploring.  It occurred to me that I hadn't been to see the new baby doves since we Frenchies gave you a progress update one week ago.  See what difference a week makes in the world of baby doves!

Do you remember two weeks ago when the dove babies hatched? The squabs were born without feathers, which means they're altricial birds.

You might assume that the pair of squabs is still up there in the nest.

Well, you would assume wrong! The nest is empty!

With today's observation, I found one baby at the bottom of the cage.

This squab was hanging out with Mom and Dad and it now looks like a full fledged dove with beautiful white feathers.

Because it's up so high, it makes me think that it can fly already.

These doves have a diet rich in assorted seeds, fruits, and vegetables. No wonder they're so strong and healthy!

The parents teach the squabs about preening. Preening is a common and important bird behavior. Did you know that birds have up to 25,000 feathers to take care of?

Regular preening keeps those feather aligned, clean of impurities, and attractive to look at. Birds will preen for several hours each day. These white doves look quite clean to me!

  • Good morning I everyone,
    WOW!!!!!!
I cannot believe how fast the little doves have grown. Amazing. And 25,000 feathers? Who knew. You know, we are feeding the birds because with all the ground covered with snow, they can't get food. I wondered how these little birds stay warm in this frigid weather. I guess having all those feathers is like my double insulated coat. Warm. Warm. Warm.
Well gang, Friday comes around too fast. What is everyone planning for the weekend? Kirby, come on up. Lots of snow for you here. Ice too. Chewy and Black Mamma, I guess you will be running things at the ranch, little Rebel, you stay warm little buddy. All you little ones, Dudley, Zoe, Abby, Chiweenies, Baby Favor and the rest of The Littles, stay real warm this weekend. The rest of you stay out of trouble. Hehehehe
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • It's Friday!!!!!!
Great post, Francesca. You taught us a lot about doves and especially the babies.
Kitty, we are hoping the medicine works.
Nothing much happening here except snow, ice and below zero temps. Haven't we said this for months now?
Maybe we should all "think Spring" together. Well, maybe after a nap....and a treat or two.
Ruby...send lots of pictures of the big meet and greet!
    Pugs and wintery kisses,
    Brutus and Max

  • Holy Bird Seed Batman! Wow, amazing to see such a change in what seems like little time!

Aw, what a nice looking little dove family! I love the doves! :)

Have we named the fine feathered friends as of yet?

    Happy Friday to everyone!

  • I'm back. One quick little thing. Remember Karen had the name of Martha's black chow on the tip of her tongue? Well, I guess it got unstuck cause she looked at me this morning and said Zu Zu. I gave her a strange look and she said that was the name of the black chow. Strange woman but I love her. Hehehehehe

  • Good Morning F & S

Well I have to say the doves look a lot better now that they grew some feathers. Can you imagine having to clean 25,000 feathers? I'd be exhausted by the end of the day the groomer every 6 weeks isn't looking so bad.

Good news for ME - all my tests came back normal. Nothing is growing in my bladder or in my pee pee. White and red blood cells are normal - Doc said all looked good. If I have more accidents in the house (which I haven't had in weeks) then we need to do another test. Maybe I just didn't feel like getting up to go outside that day who knows but for right now I'm good to go :)

So it's Friday and normally I'd be all excited because I'd be spending the weekend with mom but not this weekend it's SUPER NANNY. Mom is heading West and making a pit stop in Denver to have dinner with Ruby's mom. Not fair that Ruby and I aren't invited :( The only saving grace is that there are 2 really big bags of cheese curls. I'll be spending lots of time with Nicole.

Well have a nice weekend everyone and stay warm!!!

    Zoe

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
It’s that TGIF day again. Boy they sure do get here in a hurry don’t they. I don’t have anything planned for the weekend. We had some sleet last night but things are melting already this morning. The sun made the roadways warm so nothing stuck to them; just a few bridges are slick. Now I’ll get my feet wet when I go outside. Think I’ll just stay inside as long as I can. I won’t be like Zoe and be too lazy to go outside; don’t want all those test made on me. Hehehehe Have a good, and safe, weekend all.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, WOW! How fun it is to see those beautiful, young doves with their feathers finally covering them and Francesca, you look so cute checking them out in their beautiful cage! It is amazing at how quickly they grow up and their parents must be very happy! We have never had any birds in our house, but I love seeing everything in Martha's beautiful Bedford farm home and all things outside, also! You are so thoughtful to share all of these thing that you enjoy! Hope you have a great weekend and hope Martha has fun in Colombia! Mom has to start our stove fire to warm it up in our house with it only about 25 degrees outside this morning and I will check back later to read all of the great comments from our buddies! Hope you all stay warm and safe! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello All our GS buddies! Yes, its Friday and we are heading for the weekend! Its Riley boy today and I have been elected to write to you all. Martha is sleeping and Miz Lu was herding a cat and therefore too busy to write, so I'm the best you'll get today! What can I say, cold, tons of snow, but it is sunny and we all have been sitting outside enjoying the sunshine. Not much on this weekend, Mom is going to set up her seed starting table this weekend, we'll probably be offering our suggestions as to what we want her to grow this year. I'll be digging all the holes for her, so she has got an enthusiastic helper for sure! Well not much else to report, I think I'll go back to sitting with Dad and reading the paper. I'm getting pretty good at crosswords and Dad and I get them done quite quickly now. Have a great and safe weekend, we'll all look forward to the pictures from the great Meet n Greet. Love n Beardie bounces Martha, Miz Lu and Riley boy.

  • Good morning ladies,
Those squabs sure are getting big fast! I had no idea they had so many feathers, wow!
Keep those cats away, okay ladies?
Yup, it's Friday! Hope you all have a good weekend. I'll be cuddled up in my bed with my blanket and toys.
Be a good girl, Zoe! Mom will be home soon.
I think Brutus & Max have a great idea. We, the Glue Squad should glue all our thoughts of Spring together for one giant wish! Let's all work on that this weekend.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • :-) Oh how I love those doves! Can you hear mommie delia, she's all excited to see them. I remember the pigeon mommie found in the Home Depot lot, barely a feather...it grew fast and we taught it to fly...I know it was just a pigeon and not as pretty as the white doves, but it was Gods creation and it had a right to live..I didn't even try to go after it.

OK, if they have 25000 feathers how much fur do I have to lick everyday? Mommie ~d just said, good thing she doesn't have to lick every strand of hair on her head...silly! ;-)

Maddox I didn't know MS had so many Chows at the same time!
Zoe you'll have to tell us all about the visit in Colorado...you too Ruby!
Kirby, Rufus, Max and DDR you all behave this weekend!
The rest of you as well, I'll come back to check on your reports...
James Dean I Love you too! Send me a photo of you! Black Mama what have you been up to lately? Lovvvee my Kitkats here!
Franny you look cute in your Pink! Prurrs to you, Sharkey and GK - oh yah, don't forget all the feline beauties in the house prurrrrs to them.

Happy and warm weekend to all...
    Kitty =^. .^=

  • Hello Girls & all my Glue Squad Buddies,
A bit late today as I was helping bake dog biscuits. The is the bomb, every day, every day. I am loving it.

These doves are so sweet looking. One week no feathers, and now 25,000, OMG!!!! I wonder what kind of canaries, Mama Martha will get when she trades them to Marc. They sure do have a beautiful nest and setup. Really deluxe I must say. But what would we expect from Mama Martha---the best. Speaking of Mama Martha, we were all cracking up at her on Jay Leno's last show last night. She was teaching him how to relax and had a bacon bra---OMG again we laughed and laughed. Still working on my poster for the folks' dinner with Zoe's parents. It is neon, so they can't miss each other. Mom has been keeping me awake she is so excited. Don't you all think Mama Martha and Sharkey, Francesca and G.K. should host a Glue Squad weekend at her place? When the garden is in it's glory would be perfect. She does tours for perfect strangers, so why not her kids' Glue Squad buddies???

Everyone have a GEM of a weekend.

    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Hi Y'all,
Spade here, in for Dixie Boy who is out enjoying the sunshine while he can. I'm the tuxedo cat clown of the crew. I enjoy sitting in Mis's lap every morning and swatting Georges nose!
Lovely doves Francesca! I didn't know they would grow so fast! This type of dove can't live outside, am I right? That's why a few years ago, many people stopped using them for releasing at weddings and rememberance ceremonies. They couldn't survive in the wild. Let me know if that's right or wrong please! I'm only a cat and unconcerned for the well being of most feathered creatures, unlike Pungo who practices catch, show and release! But alas, I'm old and have put my hunting days behind me for the comforts of two meals a day and a warm blanket.
Hi to all my cat buddies on the glue squad. Kitty, take care of those parasites, they can be bad news. Black Mama, take care of the tribe. It's great that Lucinda and James takes such good care of you guys. James Dean, we need to discuss your favorite reads. Now that I'm a cat of leisure I may be interested in starting a new hobby.
Hope everyone has a great weekend! Stay safe and warm and out of trouble as Maddox said! From what I can tell, he's the boss. And just don't forget that Cats Rule!
    Spade

  • The doves look more beautiful each day. Well its another Friday meaning more below 0 weather followed by more snow tomorrow!

Yay for Zoe and Ruby's Mommies getting together even if you kids don't get to just yet. Stay safe everyone and have a great weekend.

  • Hello Francesca, Dove babies, and GS friends,
How nice to see updated pictures of the little doves who now resemble their parents in miniature!
They grow up so fast, lots of beautiful feathers to clean and preen each day.
Spade, you really had me laughing, yes cats rule on Fridays! Brutus and Max we will all think very hard on SPRING oriented themes together. Zoe, hope your Mom and Ruby's Mom have the best time meeting each other this weekend. I think the cheese curls may be coming your way! Even Abby has a stray taco chip these days. Kitty, my dearest, I will try to figure out how to send a picture to you. Missy Chow, how's it going up in New England?? Rebel, Chloe, Dudley, Zoe and my little friends keep warm.
Mom is working all weekend now. She loves to see the dog boarders. Maddox, we never knew about ZuZu but she must have been pretty. I am scheduled for a cat dentistry next Tuesday!!! OMG. But it will be better to get my teeth all pretty again. Have a great Weekend! Abby is still snoring...

  • Hey Everybody
Never again will we complain about the rain! We have about a foot of snow on our porch this morning and 2 more storms on the way...mom let us out last night and Sophie and I sort of dove off the porch and had a great time tunneling around...Mayer, not so much...hard for a guy to pee when the snow is taller than he is...yes a funny sight indeed...and we didn't help the situation any when we would tunnel to him and then jump out of the snow at him...mom said we were having too much fun and made us come in the house...sometimes she is such a spoiled sport! Ruby, be sure and tell Mama Lynn to take lots of pics of the Great Meet & Greet dinner. If the weather stays as ugly as it is right now in Portland Ann & Steve may spend more time in Denver than they thought...we had a friend flying out to Phoenix this morning and he made it out but now we hear on the news that freezing rain is in the forecast for Saturday...YUK!!!! Our plan for the weekend is to just stay snuggled into our blankets and watch some serious Animal Planet!
    Catch ya all on Monday
    Chloe, the Queen Chiweenie
