Dusting The Kitchen Canisters

Posted by F&S

Happy Valentine's Day, Glue Squad!  We Frenchies sure love all of you!  Yesterday was dusting day in the kitchen.  Martha likes to keep dry food goods in beautiful glass jars and displays them on open shelving.  Of course, those jars need a dusting from time to time and we Frenchies like to be right in the middle of things, as usual.

Sharkey! Come down off that step ladder! Let Laura and Sanu do the heavy lifting.

You're so right, Franny. I can barely reach this high shelf. I am, however, very curious as to all of these jar's contents.

Yes, much safer down here. Ahh! I just love the aroma of nutmeg. We should grate some right now.

These nutmegs are special because they still have their web-like coating of mace, a very different spice from the same tree!

Franny, these are bay leaves - they add a wonderful flavor to soups, stews, sauces, and marinades.

The ancient Greeks and Romans believed the bay tree was sacred, and they used its leaves to make crowns honoring victorious warriors and athletes. Great poets were also crowned with bay leaves, and were hailed as poets laureate, a term still used today. Write a poem, Franny, and I'll make you a crown!

Sniff, sniff - I recognize the smell of these beans!

This is the jar of beans that Martha uses to weigh down pie shells that need to be blind baked. They kind of smell baked, if you know what I mean.

Sharkey, as I stand here pondering this bundle of soba noodles, I have to say that I am totally impressed with your culinary knowledge. I guess it comes from a lifetime of hanging around in Martha's kitchen!

  • Good FRIDAY morning Francesca, Sharkey and all our Glue Squad friends!!!!
Max here.....I love to sniff stuff just like you two. Mom and Dad let me sniff all the bags that come into the house. A guy has to know what is in those bags, right? Brutus doesn't care about the smells.
Well does everyone have their Valentine cards all finished? We have already sent some and we have a couple more to hand deliver. Two cute guys like us have to keep up our image, right? hahahahaha
We hope everyone has a Happy Valentine day and you get lots of Valentines and treats!
Have a great weekend and stay safe, stay warm.
    Pugs and heart-shaped kisses!
    Brutus and Max

  • Happy Valentine's Day to all the furries on Martha's Farm and all the gluey's who post on the Daily Wag!

Mmm, I too love the smell of nutmeg. Reminds me of a warm autumn day, sun shining, leaves ablaze with color.

However, I'm ready for Spring, so put the nutmeg back on the shelf! :)

NH got a whole lotta snow yesterday. In fact, it's still snowing. I'm snow logged! :)

By the way, I have a collection of fun vintage canisters myself. My house is outfitted all retro like! :)

    Happy Friday to all...

  • Good morning everyone,
HAPPY VALENTINES DAY TO ALL MY GLUE SQUAD FAMILiES
I was reading the comments out loud this morning that You girls wrote about the jars. When I read the one about the soba noodles, Karen said she never heard of them. You know, it is a sad day when dogs know more about food and spices, etc. than a human does. Pretty sad indeed. Sometimes life throws things at you and you just have to deal with whatever comes along. I guess in my life that would be Karen. hehehehehehehehe
Just kidding Karen. You are a good person and I love you very very much even though your culinary skills are nil.
Kirby, get your butt up here. Bring a bunch of friends. We had a foot of snow yesterday and then today we woke up to about another 8 inches and in between those two layers, it is ice because of the freezing rain that was thrown into the mix. Need I say more?
You little ones, tie a red flag on your tail sonif you get lost in the snow piles just wag your tail and you will be found. You bigger ones, make sure you get the packed snow out between your toes when you come back in the house.
Have a great Valentine's Day everyone and do something fun over the weekend.
Karen said she is digging the grill out and she is going to make something outside on the grill. She said there is nothing better than the smell of grilled food in the middle of a snow storm. I think she got whacked on the head with the shovel yesterday. Strange woman.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, Happy Valentines Day to all of you sweethearts and I'm sending hugs to all of you! Hope you all have a great day and weekend and I love all of you! You sweet girls sure do have more fun working in Martha's home when the weather is cold, windy, and snowy and how fun to see you helping take the dust off of Martha's great containers! How fun to see all of the great items that are in those jars and to see that Laura and Sanu do such nice work in the kitchen! Hope your weather improves! We are mostly getting wind and rain and some nice sunny afternoons lately! Was nice to hear from Brutus and Max, Gail, and Maddox so far this morning and will hope to hear from the rest of you sweethearts later! God Bless all of you and stay warm and safe! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Good morning from the frozen regions of the vast south. It’s not that it is cold here, just frozen with lots of ice. I would rather have a foot of snow than this three inches, or more, of ice. It’s on all the trees making them break and loose their limbs. My back yard looks like someone set off a tree bomb. One limb is sticking through the bedroom ceiling. Boy did that make a big bang when it hit the roof. Daddy has to wait until the ice melts before he can remove it; don’t want him to fall off the roof. That would be a twenty foot drop to the pavement of the driveway. It’s going to take weeks before it is cleaned up. And the trees look like some mad lumberjack took a chain saw to them. But we are lucky no one was hurt and roof’s can be fixed. Happy Valentines Day to all. Have a good, and safe, weekend all.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello Girls & all my Glue Squad Buddies,
Canister dusting huh girls. It must have been in the air. After Mom did all the Warrior Prince Biscuit baking the floor was like a saw dust factory, so cleaning began. It went from the floor to cupboards. Our canisters are inside the cupboards and now are dusted as well. I think your culinary knowledge is superb.

Well, again, everyone but Ruby is butt vrooming in the snow it seems. I am convinced Mother Nature put up one of those things like on the computer that prevents viruses---a fire wall. I think we have one for deep snows around us. I am now in muck outside and it will be 60+ today. Oh, and Zoe, is probably really fired up now---her folks are getting more delays. I hope all my Glue Squad buddies got their Valentine's from me from our Loveland, Colorado. What with all the snow and storms they are probably in Valentine card ozone. Gail, I must say you need to send your e-mail to be on the list. Send it to Zoe's mom next week when she returns. You need to see our beautiful photos we frequently send to one another. Also, since you live so close, you especially need to know of the Happening!!! Next year, Westminster Dog Show in February in New York to see Karen and the Chows. Be there or be square is my motto. I am trying to figure out how to come. You small doggies can fit in carry on luggage, but not us big ones. We don't hide too well. Well, everyone have a GEM of a Valentine's Day.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Morning Girls & Glue Squad Buddies - Happy Valentine's Day ! :-) ....Hope Cupid's arrow creates some new romances this year :-) . Maddox, will you be my Valentine? Friday once again, where did the week go? Not much happening here today, possibility of more snow late tomorrow..I'd be happy with temps in the 30's just to start to melt this existing snow. We need sunshine. Mom's getting ready to go shopping so I better get my list ready so she doesn't forget. Have a great weekend everyone.

    Till next time,
    MissyChow
    xoxo

  • F&S, please explain what "blind baked" means, in regard to pie shells. I'd also like to learn more about whole nutmeg with its mace covering (sounds interesting). I am indebted to you for enhancing my culinary education. Bone appetit, ladies!

  • Good morning ladies,
That dusting makes me sneeze! Mimi has a cupboard that smells really good when she opens the door. I think that is where she keeps all her magic tricks.
Although I am one of the little ones but I am going to put out my Valentine to all the girls, too.
Happy Valentines Day ladies, will you be mine?
    Have a great weekend.
    Your Valentine,
    Rebel

  • Hello and Happy Valentine's Day to all the Glueys: We woke up to more snow again today, what a surprise (not!), although we were lucky, just to the south of us they got immense loads of snow, we escaped with about 2 more inches. My goodness, I'm wondering if this snow will ever stop. We have already had the ice storms in December (Kirby we feel your pain), trees down everywhere, we lost power for quite a while and many people didn't get power back until way after Xmas - can you image trying to cook your Xmas turkey with no electricity, yikes!!
Anyways the family all went out for a nice dinner last night to celebrate Valentine's Day and Mom gave us special heart shaped doggie treats. Food is the way to go for us! Everyone, have a nice Valentine's Day, lots of love and cuddles to everyone. We are starting a long weekend, Monday is Family Day in Ontario so Mom is happy to be off. Love and Beardie bounces to all, Martha, Miz Lu and Riley boy XOXOX

  • Why Missy Chow, how flattering that you want me to be your Valentine. That is very sweet of you. Sure I will be your Valentine. Of course you know I have several other Valentines as well, but I have enough love to go around. If you were here I would break out my secret stash of biscuits and share them with you
    Love ya,
    Maddox
PS - Ruby, the snow in the yard is over 4 feet deep here. It was about 2 1/2 - 3 feet but there was major drifting. It would be good to platy hide and seek in. Tunnels would be all over the yard

  • Hi Y'all!
You girls sure know a lot about the works in a kitchen. I, myself prefer to stay out of the way when Mis is in the kitchen. George, on the other hand wants to be in on the action. She says that it takes twice as long to cook with him around. She's constantly having to step over him and keeping him out of things. He's a curious sort. Yesterday, Mis decided to clean an rearrange the living room. I'm not so sure I like it but it makes her happy so I go with it. Just leave my bed alone!
Kirby, Mis thought that blob of pink on the radar was clobbering you guys down there. We had about 5" of snow, 1" of sleet, a glaze ( thankfully) of freezing rain and straight rain all within 24 hours. Now it's just slushy muck! Thankfully no limbs or trees down and we kept our power. The southeastern part of NC got hit harder. We had three days of snow. That's a bit unusual! Hope that's the last of it! Next week it's going to be 70!
Sorry Ruby, no letter yet. Probably just delayed.
    Happy Valentines Day everyone!
    Dixie Boy

  • Hello and Happy Valentine's Day to Everyone!
So nice to see Sharkey and Franny working in the kitchen and sniffing out nice jar contents... where is the extra nip for the cats?? I am going to investigate here and look for our canister of nip nip. Love is everywhere and now Maddox and Missy Chow are Valentine sweethearts too. Kitty and I sent each other beautiful Valentine poems...
Abby does not know who to ask?? She is a bit shy, being a pug/peke/frenchie girl. How about it Rebel???
We have about 20 inches of the frozen white stuff here, thankfully my human uncle came and snow blew the driveway.. Mom is getting tired from all this shoveling. We want to wish Zoe, Dudley, Kirby, the Chiweenies, Maddox, Wu Tang, Kitty, Black Mama cat, Miz Lu, Martha, Riley, Dixie Boy, Spade, RUBY, Missy Chow, Minnow, Sharkey, Franny, G.K. and everyone a GREAT weekend!!!! love and purrrrrrs,
