As so many of you know, it is truly heartbreaking to bid farewell to our fur kids as they pass on.

Chauncy was a truly special friend and feline. He came to me as a stray when I was living in California. I took him in with the intention or finding him a home elsewhere. He briefly went to live with another family, but they ultimately decided to wait before adopting a companion animal- and truthfully, I missed him so much- I was happy to have him back. It was then that I adopted him and became his human fur-ever mom.

Sadly, my other felines kind of ignored him. They are very bonded to one another, which is a wonderful thing- but it left Chauncy to be a loner of sorts. So, when a dear friend pointed out that I was in fact Chauncy's true best friend- and that he depended solely upon me for love and connection, I committed to that role in a more mindful way.

Thankfully-over the years- Chauncy found his place amongst the canines in our family. He became the only feline to sleep on the bed amongst the dogs. My husband began to refer to him as a "CAD" because he was a "Cat Amongst Dogs."

Chauncy was a steady, kind soul... always patient...always attentive. There was a wisdom and patience to him that I came to admire a great deal. My friend Megan always addressed him as Dr. Chauncy - she felt he was a therapist of sorts- and she was right. I used to bring him to a therapy group I facilitated and he was always a huge star; he was loving and accessible in a way that was so clearly healing to those who met him.

I am so thankful that our home became Chauncy's forever home- and that we had the good fortune to share these years with him. The past months in particular have been very special- he and I have been inseparable as he has battled lymphoma. (I was surprised to learn that cats often tolerate chemotherapy quite well. I also think it helped to keep Chauncy more comfortable too, which was our main priority.) I will miss our naps together and sharing popcorn- I discovered his affinity for it a few months back, and since then we have enjoyed many a popped kernel together.

Minnow and I have greatly appreciated the kind sentiments sent to us by loyal readers. It is heartening to imagine Chauncy in the company of other Daily Wag and Glue Squad members who have passed- all of them up there forming a Glue Squad of their very own- only this Squad has wings...

We miss you dearly Chauncy. Thank you for sharing your life and love with us.

In kinship,
Dr. Pia Salk

  • What a very, very sad week we have had. Chauncy, Zoe, Sophie, the canaries.
Chauncy and the carnaries are across the Rainbow Bridge, pain free, flying free, snoozing in the sunshine. They will be waiting there to greet us someday.
Zoe and Sophie we will surround you with our love and paws and be you with during this awful time.
May peace and love be with all our Glue Squad friends--human, furry, and feathered.
    Brutus and Max

  • Dear Doctor,
I must take a moment to thank you for your taking such good care of one of Gods creatures. While Chauncy allowed you years of pleasure it was your kindness the made it possible.
May God watch over you and all you love

  • Glue Squad,
As you know I take a break on Thursdays unless there is something very important that needs to be addressed.
We have members that are dealing with cancer and other serious health issues. Ruby said to form a brigade to support these members. That would be a good idea if we were just a normal group. But we are a squad that has been supporting our friends from the get go. We are the Glue Squad We have always sent good thoughts and prayers to our members who are going through rough times and we will continue to do so. Right now, Zoe, Chloe the Chiweenie and James, Chewy's dad, need us to send them positive thoughts and warm wishes. Let them know how much we love them . They know that but tell them again. Let's all hope and pray they can beat the issues they are dealing with and send them all the love you can.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Oh Dr. Pia I'm sending you lots of Zoe kisses I know your heart hurts :( I'm sure my big sis Precious is taking good care of Chauncy she is the mothering type and was the sweetest lab ever :)

I went to the herb lady Vet yesterday she was kinda cool and so was her assistant. Not your ordinary office mom and I sat on the floor with them and she did acupuncture on me to help my immune system. Then I got to run around this big play area office where she does therapy for dogs. It was like a playground for kids but only dogs indoors. I'm going to start taking some herbs to help fight my "C" and also my immune system along with some healthy foods. I didn't tell mom but I hope this all works because I don't want to leave her I would really be sad.

Dr. Pia thanks for posting the pictures of Chauncy

    Love Zoe

  • Hello Dr. Pia and the GS Nation:
This week has been brutal, so much sadness and bad news. Today we got news that our friend Chelsea, a 12 year old Chocolate Lab passed away yesterday evening. She had been ailing for a while, but yesterday evening she was called to the Rainbow Bridge. We hope she will be there with all our buddies that have gone before, playing happily with her "babies".
We send out our positive thoughts and energy to all our GS buddies that are in need of it, Zoe, Chloe, James - know that you are in our hearts.
Well, gotta go, pray that tomorrow will be a better day with some happy news for sure!
Martha, Miz Lu and Riley boy

  • I'm so sorry for your huge loss. What a beautiful cat he was and he was very fortunate to live in a family with you. It was so touching to see how cared for and pampered him in his last days. I know he's in heaven and appreciated all that you did to make him comfortable. Thank you for being such a good friend and guardian to all animals.

  • Dr. Pia & Family-Although we are a day behind, both Mom & I express our condolences to you and your family for your loss. Chauncy was a handsome kittie and in a home with lots of love. Thank you for sharing those special moments on the DW. Your happy memories can never be taken away. May he rest in peace at the Rainbow Bridge with all of our furry kids who have already passed.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo
