As promised, I will share some treasured memories of a very special feline who was a regular here at The Daily Wag...
As so many of you know, it is truly heartbreaking to bid farewell to our fur kids as they pass on.
Chauncy was a truly special friend and feline. He came to me as a stray when I was living in California. I took him in with the intention or finding him a home elsewhere. He briefly went to live with another family, but they ultimately decided to wait before adopting a companion animal- and truthfully, I missed him so much- I was happy to have him back. It was then that I adopted him and became his human fur-ever mom.
Sadly, my other felines kind of ignored him. They are very bonded to one another, which is a wonderful thing- but it left Chauncy to be a loner of sorts. So, when a dear friend pointed out that I was in fact Chauncy's true best friend- and that he depended solely upon me for love and connection, I committed to that role in a more mindful way.
Thankfully-over the years- Chauncy found his place amongst the canines in our family. He became the only feline to sleep on the bed amongst the dogs. My husband began to refer to him as a "CAD" because he was a "Cat Amongst Dogs."
Chauncy was a steady, kind soul... always patient...always attentive. There was a wisdom and patience to him that I came to admire a great deal. My friend Megan always addressed him as Dr. Chauncy - she felt he was a therapist of sorts- and she was right. I used to bring him to a therapy group I facilitated and he was always a huge star; he was loving and accessible in a way that was so clearly healing to those who met him.
I am so thankful that our home became Chauncy's forever home- and that we had the good fortune to share these years with him. The past months in particular have been very special- he and I have been inseparable as he has battled lymphoma. (I was surprised to learn that cats often tolerate chemotherapy quite well. I also think it helped to keep Chauncy more comfortable too, which was our main priority.) I will miss our naps together and sharing popcorn- I discovered his affinity for it a few months back, and since then we have enjoyed many a popped kernel together.
Minnow and I have greatly appreciated the kind sentiments sent to us by loyal readers. It is heartening to imagine Chauncy in the company of other Daily Wag and Glue Squad members who have passed- all of them up there forming a Glue Squad of their very own- only this Squad has wings...
We miss you dearly Chauncy. Thank you for sharing your life and love with us.
