The Winter Greenhouse Rounds

Posted by F&S

During the winter months, it's really important to check the greenhouses regularly.  If the furnace shuts down for some reason, all of the plants could freeze and die.  The other day, we Frenchies decided to join Ryan on his rounds.

Well, here we are at the topical greenhouse where hundreds of tropical specimens are housed for the winter. It's good to know they're safe from freezing temperatures.

A furnace provides heat and all of the moisture from watering produces a rainforest effect. It's really drippy in there.

Now let's go into the citrus hoop house and see how things are in there. Yumm! Something smells so great!

Francesca, look! This Meyer lemon tree is blossoming and that's what smells so enticing. Citrus flowers have such a pleasant aroma.

Look at all these kumquats! These little citrus gems are often eaten raw. I'm told that the skin is sweet and the juicy center is sour. They also make great marmalade and jelly.

Sharkey, I really like how the pots are elevated using tree rounds.

Franny, these large lemons are Ponderosa lemons. Because of their size, people love making lemonade with them because they have so much juice.

Sharkey, do you know what else is growing in the hoop house? - beautiful cymbidium orchids and they're beginning to bloom now. Isn't this yellow one gorgeous?

I could almost smell the lemons! The pink orchid is beautiful!

    I've got the Winter blah's!

Can F&S pull a few strings with Mother Nature so she can send Spring a little early this year? :)

    Happy Monday to all..

  • Good Morning F & S

It must be nice to take a walk in the greenhouses and pretend it's summer. I'm sick of this winter already and Mother Nature can't make up her mind if she wants winter or spring. One day 25 next day 55!!!

I had a wonderful weekend with mom. Saturday she never left the house :) We made all kinds of good stuff and cleaned out the pantry, freezer and refrigerator. That kind of stuff makes mom happy - go figure. Of course we watched football great games.

My time is cut short mom has to leave for work :(

  • Hi all,
I wish we would have a hoop house filled with all kinds of citrus trees. I bet it smells wonderful in there. And it must be awesome in the dead of winter with snow and ice all around to be able to go into the tropical plant house and see all those beautiful plants. I bet you feel warm all over no matter how cold it is outside. Kool.
It was busy here. We had company all weekend. Karen's cousin was killed when he was out on his ATV putting food out for the deer when we had that real cold night. He slipped on ice and the 4 wheeler landed on top of him. His services were this weekend. Relatives from all over the country flew in so it was a very sad but busy weekend. I didn't get to read the comments from Friday but I will try to do that today.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good morning Francesca, Sharkey, Ryan and Glue Squad!
The greenhouses looked great....and warm. You girls look great in your sweaters. Lucky for me, Max, the temps have been ok and I don't have to wear mine.
Brutus here. Boy did I have a crummy weekend. Friday morning Mom noticed I was licking and chewing my right foot. Then Dad noticed it was bloody. Off to the vets we go. And why does the vet have to check our temps every time we go? Anyway, I cut the pad of my paw somehow so they wrapped it up and gave me a couple of shots. And I had to keep it dry and wrapped all weekend. So whenever I wanted outside Mom had to put a bag over my leg. The vet's office gave us an IV bag and they punched holes on the sides and put string through to tie around my leg. Mom thought that was a neat idea. And of course they gave me pills to take. Mom "hides" them in food and I let her think I don't know the pills are there. Then Sunday afternoon things got a little excited outside and the darn bag and bandage came off. You would have thought the world was coming to an end! So Mom and Dad wrapped my foot with gauze and an ace wrap and tape the whole thing. And, of course, I'm wearing the bag outside still. The vet said I could take everything off today. We will see. Mom was really mad yesterday. Yikes.
Enough about me....Ruby! Good that your Broncs won last night!
Hope everyone has a great day.
We will check in later and read about everyones weekend adventures.
    Pugs and kisses.
    Brutus and Max

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
What a weekend this was. It was below the 32 degree mark all day Friday and then it was up in the 60’s the next two days with a low in the 40’s. It was so warm we had a thunderstorm and some high winds. Now they tell me that it will be turning colder later on this week. Winter in the south is very strange and I don’t think I will ever be able to understand it. I’ll just take it day by day. Sorry to hear the bad news Maddox; tell Karen to take care, we love her.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Morning Girls & Glue Squad Buddies - Ahhhh...I can smell a touch of spring from your greenhouses, does that mean winter is almost over...probably NOT! But I can dream, can't I?? With the warmer weather this weekend, I got my mulitple walks and it sure felt good to stretch out. Karen, so sorry to hear about your cousin. It was football weekend and we won!! Okay, Ruby, our Pats will be ready, I'll be coaching them afar, hehe... Brutus, sorry to hear about your paw, hope it feels better soon. Zoe, did you get any extra treats? Hope all my buddies are doing okay. Better run, almost nap time.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow

Sure hope handsome GK is doing well and please hug him again for me! Gail, sure hope it gets warmer where you live! It's 50 here but kind of windy again! Zoe, so glad you had a nice weekend and hope it stays warmer there, too! Maddox, so sorry to hear about Karen's cousin dying and my prayers go out to him. Hope you have better weather! • Good morning ladies,
Very nice trip to the greenhouses. Mimi would love one of those. She's been thinking about having a lemon tree. I'd promise not to use it on super cold days. She really liked how you use the tree stumps for stands. She's so in to that woodlands, natural stuff.
Maddox, tell Karen we are so sorry for her and the family.
Brutus, hang in there, your "wrapped-up-tight" foot will be free soon and feeling much better, too.
    Have a great day everybody
    Your pal,
    Rebel
ooo, is somebody at your house going to have a birthday soon?

  • Hello Glue Squad buddies,
Wow loved the nice springlike photos from the greenhouse! We want spring here pronto, immediamente.
Karen, so sorry to hear about your loss and our paws and hearts go out to you and Maddox.
Brutus, hope your cute foot feels better soon! Mom says it is hard to keep those IV bags on dog feet. Hope it is healing well.
Ruby, congrats on your Broncos win, Good JOB Missy Chow and her Patriots too!
We are still in shock from Downton last night!!!
Mom is dancing around the kitchen to "Happy" music today, very good dog and cat dance music too!!!

  • Hi Y'all!
What wonderf/ul things you girls have to enjoy on the f/arm. The smell of/ a tropical greenhouse with citrus blossoms is a most wonderf/ul thing. Mis misses having citrus trees. She'll have to buy a couple of/ her f/avorites and keep them as bonsai just f/or the /fragrance. Beauti/ful cymbidiums too. We have a rich pink variety in bloom right now.
Maddox and Karen, please accept our condolences on the loss of/ your cousin. Our prayers will be with you and your f/amily.
Brutus, hope your f/oot gets better! That iv bag trick sounds excellent. Every time I cut my f/oot, Mis dunks it in something called 'Pinee Oil'. Smells to high heavens but works well. It's something called antiseptic and you can buy it in /farm stores that provide livestock meds. It's great f/or any kind of/ cut or scratch as long as it's not deep. Then you have to go to the vet and have your temperature taken. AGAIN!
Kirby, I agree, our Southern weather is acting up this year. We had some bad winds just to the west of/ us Saturday a/fternoon. We had some thunder and some wind but nothing like they did. And the rain! It rained so hard on Saturday night f/or a couple of/ hours it was drowning the tv out. Water eve5rywhe5re.
Looks like Mis's keyboa5rd is beginning to act up again. Geor5ge and I a5re to blame f/or5 that. Sor5r5y Mis! Best go be/for5e it goes ou5t completely.

  • Morning all...Football, football, and more football, what a great weekend! People in and out, lots of snacks and goodies being passed around...we keep telling mom she never needs to bring out the huge noise maker to clean up, she has us! Congrats to Ruby's Broncos..can't wait till the 49ers make the trip to Seattle next week..we got this!
Maddox, please tell Karen how very sorry we are about her cousin. She and her family will be in our prayers. Ruby, please tell mama Lynn we're thinking about her too.
How come Mondays always get here so fast and Fridays take forever to roll around again? I guess "WE" are cleaning house today...now doesn't that sound like fun? NO
Have a good day everybody and I'll check in again later to see what the rest of the Squad was up to this weekend

  • :-) I was wishing for greenery and here we are looking into the Green Houses...I'd be spending all my spare time in them, you can lose depression real fast. F&S you girls are the luckiest dogs to live amongst such beauty...I'm happy for you!
Kitty is not taking advantage of the heat wave of 39 right now...she's sleeping on the computer table...geez!
Karen my prayer is to heal your heart for your loss. Where is Lynn? all OK?
I told Kitty about the Valentine Kitty...she prurrs, well isn't that sweet, smooches back to purrrdie Persian JD ;-)
Hang in there folks Winter is almost finished, just give it a couple of months for all the green to come back...that is, unless you live where there's no 4 seasons!
Lynn I thought of you during the Denver game, I heard you screaming all the way here!
    Hugs to all
    delia & Kitty =^.v.^=
