Looking For Nesting Boxes

Posted by F&S

We Frenchies were driving around the farm the other day and started to notice different nesting boxes intended for birds of prey, like owls and kestrels.

Sharkey, do you see what I see up on that tree?

Francesca, it appears to be an owl nesting box, but from the looks of its roof, I doubt it has any inhabitants. I think we should tell the guys to put a new roof on it.

Maybe if we drive around, we'll notice other nesting boxes.

Ah-ha! There's one up on that sycamore tree. Did you know that owls do not build their own nests, but simply use the old nests of hawks, ravens, and other birds?

However, some species of owls, like barn owls and screech owls, are cavity nesters and are attracted to nesting boxes, like this one.

In fact, there's a screech owl now! How cool is that?

Here's another nesting box, but this one has a smaller opening. It's made for an American kestrel, North America's smallest falcon. They, too, are cavity nesters.

Look at the mess on top of that kestrel box! It looks like a squirrel was feasting on nuts on the roof.

Sure enough - look at all these hickory nuts below the nesting box.

It must have been a banner year for hickory nuts, which would explain why the squirrels are so fat!

You'd think there would be a nice soft nest in there, but cavity nesters don't build nests. They just lay their eggs on the bottom of the cavity or box.

Would you look at that! There's even an owl nesting box mounted high up on the equipment barn.

Who would have thought! We've even come across one more nesting box today.

We've never noticed this one before, but there's another owl nesting box high up on that spruce tree. Wonder how many more there are around here?

  • Hello Francesca and Sharkey! It's Frrriiiidddaaaayyy!
Very interesting post today. We should ask our Dad to build and hang some nesting boxes in our woods. That would make a great weekend project.
Well, Glue Squad, we made it through another week. Does anyone have weekend plans? We will be watching for snow. The weather geeks are promising some snow Saturday. I hope so! Max here...a little snow is ok, but I don't like walking in snow that's taller than me.
Ruby Gem we will be watching the game on Sunday and thinking of you! Maybe Mom will have some snacks....hmmmm.
Hope everyone has a great weekend. Stay warm, stay dry, stay safe.
    Pugs and wet nose kisses!
    Brutus and Max

  • Good morning everyone,
I didn't know that some birds and owls don't put anything in the boxes. Those poor babies. They have to be cold when they are in there alone. They must be tough little kids. That was awesome that there was an owl in the box when you did a drive by.
We are supposed to have a decent weekend, cold but no ice, no thunderstorms, just a normal winter weekend. I guess all you football maniacs are gearing up for in house tail gating Hehehehehehe
Have a great weekend. Everybody stsy warm and happy
    Love to all.

  • Good Morning F & S

It's FRIDAY and I survived my visit to the Vet - can I tell you I'm glad this week is over :) I had to get blood drawn, 2 shots and my nails clipped! I had a very good checkup but mom was right I do have a urinary tract infection so I'm on an antibiotic. Dad said I must have been sleeping around how did I get that kind of infection. I'll have you all know I'm still a virgin.

F & S that is so cool you have owl's nesting in your houses. It makes mom so happy when the birds take up residence in one of our houses. We have one that looks like a condo up on a high pole but those birds only come in the warm weather.

I'm looking forward to the weekend and hanging out with mom and dad. We have 2 really good football games to watch on Sunday and that means football snacks :) I'll be cheering for Ruby's Bronco's to win.

    Have a great weekend everyone!!!

  • Hello Girls & all my Glue Squad Buddies,
TGIF, and boy do I mean it today. I think the nursing duties have finally ended. Thank God!!! We need snow though soon, as I have brought in enough dead grass to make a nest---for me!!! Hehehehehehe

Good news on the check up Zoe!!! Kirby how are your eyes doing? And Dixie Boy and George, any mischief? No more computer stuff at least, we gotta hear from you!! Riley, any more landscape jobs going on? We keep busy even in winter for sure. Abby and Jimmy I bet you loved this post today, since you guys love owls. Brutus, how is your paw? Did you have to go back to the vet's for re-check? Max, keep him in line, it is a hard job but someone has to do it. Rebel, Kitty, and Dudley, any snow coming? It is dry, dry here. Windy, windy however!! Chewy, the Chiweenies, Mr. Mayer, Dudley and Missy, have fun rooting for your teams. I, of course am into serious food planning for the playoffs. Great football this weekend. Did you know my Peyton boy is good friends with Missy's Brady boy? I sure hope they don't get to drinking beer ever and tell each other their secrets. I am getting my Bronco bandannas all lined up to wear. Have a GEM of a weekend all.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, Thanks again for showing us what you two sweethearts found while you were driving around the farm again! How fun it was to see so many great nesting boxes for birds way up in the trees all around Martha's beautiful Bedford farm! Seeing that owl in photo #6 was so neat and we have lots of birds flying all around our trees but no nesting boxes! We used to put foods out for our birds and my friend Bogie would hide and then grab birds and kill them unfortunately so we stopped feeding them! Please hug GK again and have a great weekend! Nice to hear from Brutus and Max, Maddox, Zoe, and Ruby! We didn't get any snow yet but we get lots of fog and it feels very cold especially for the Seahawks game on Sunday! Zoe, sure hope you are feeling better! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
What a good night we had here. It was cold but the wind stopped blowing. I was able to get plenty of sleep without that noise. Now you ask what noise? One of the attic turbine vents has a worn spot on it. When it spins in the wind, it makes a thunking, is there such a word, ever once in a while. To me it sounds like someone is trying to cut a hole in the roof. I guess Mommy and Daddy don’t pay any attention to it, but I certainly do. After all that’s part of my job around here; security. And boy do I keep things secure around here. One could say I run a tight ship. Hehehehehe Have a good, and safe, weekend all.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • TGIF - and hello to all the GS buddies:
More snow again last night, well everything looks pretty, but we are already ready for Spring! January and February are the hardest months, for sure. Riley boy has kept out of the excavation zone so far since last time, Mom really did talk to him good. However, I'm sure the next time it thaws a little he'll be back at it. What a boy, although Mom is always telling him she loves him to death! She loves us too, and tells us regularly, but you'd think he was the best thing since sliced bread! Miz Lu here - nothing terribly exciting going on today, although we are going to see our grandma this weekend, she has recently had two litters of Beardies, one with 9 puppies and one with 4. They are about three weeks old now, so should be toddling around. Mom says, NO MORE PUPPIES, but she and our sister Sam just love to socialize with them - we don't think puppies are that great, but we do like the ride to get there! Anyways, everyone keep warm and dry, sounds like there is lots of football watching going on - we always watch the Superbowl - don't really much root for any team, but love the half time show. Now if you want to talk about hockey .....
Gotta go, love and Beardie bounces to all, Martha, Miz Lu and Riley boy.

  • :-) I'm happy to see you two Frenchies enjoying the bird nest hunting! I love birds, as does Kitty but for other reasons ;-) yesterday I saw many birds especially at our neighbors feeder...yep Kitty saw it also. We have an old bird feeder that has not been used for years, it's on a high freestanding poll with a squirrel guard, the top of the chimney is gone (the food opening) and 2 years ago a Wren filled it with twigs and nested then last year she filled it almost to the top, the sides are plastic and you can see in...fun to watch.
Ruby sweets tell mama Lynn hello and hope she is feeling better...smooches to you both.
I love hearing the chirping of the birds, Spring come on!
    Hugs to everyone.

  • Hi Y'all!
Great blog girls. Love seeing the Screech Owl sitting in the door. We on occasion hear owls still. There has been so much development around this area that the hollows are few. Probably some down on the creek. That's where the Hawks and the Eagles stay. Mis and Kim get sooo excited when they see the Eagles flying. They are new additions to the airspace around here. Sadly with all the development, that's likely short lived. We'll enjoy it while we can!
Zoe, we are glad to hear that you are doing well and on the mend. However..... OVERSHARE...OVERSHARE!!!!!
    Warn a guy next time!
Ruby, not much excitement lately except George's two baths. Okay, the second was more of a cat lick. He did bring Mis some treasure earlier in the week. A turtle shell. She ask him for it and he let her have it without a fight and she gave him a treat for being good! Yesterday, he brought another turtle shell in and Mis asked him to give it to her. And like a good dog he dropped it in her hands. She then gave him another treat for obeying. Perhaps she needs to re-think this! George's thinking, He brings treasure....gets treat. Mis is thinking, he brings treasure and obeys her command to give it to her. They aren't thinking on the same wavelength. So, about 20 min. later George brings another treasure. A rotten, mushy cucumber. He lets Mis take it and sit real pretty expecting a treat. Okay, she wises up by now and figures out that George is smarter that she is. We'll be looking for colleges for him soon.
Lynn, we hope that you're feeling better and will be ready for the big game. We are like Miz Lu, Not much into football. Our professional team is based in Charlotte and might as well be in another state. We do have professional hockey here in Raleigh, although it makes little sense to us. We would love a professional baseball team! The AAA teams here are very popular and we understand that sport more than any. And it's played when it's WARM!
Well, we're going to have good weather for the next few days, even though the temperatures are up and down throughout. Mis is finishing up some projects and starting on new ones. We hope all of our buddies have a great weekend. Stay safe!
    Dixie Boy

  • Ooh, cool is right! Looks like Mr. Owl was making sure no one disturbed his home! :)

I'll have to keep a look out when I take drives to see if I notice any owl boxes.

As for squirrels being 'fat', I think the correct term would be pleasingly plump! :)

    Happy Friday!
    gail
p.s. I wonder if the owls like the rock group "The Who" :)

  • Afternoon Girls & Glue Squad Buddies - Thank goodness Mom is home from her errands and she let me get to the computer before she checks her messages. Good job on checking on all the nests. You have alot of them. We have alot of squirrel nests and they are real big, how many can live in one house anyhow?? Well, big football weekend. Ruby, Mom has a surprise for me but she hasn't told me yet, I know her camera will be ready ;) . May the best team play to win!! We are having a heat wave; temps in the 40's today but could change over the weekend. Mis Luz, sounds like fun to see the new puppies this weekend. Zoe, good news on your appt, you'll be back to yourself real soon, any TP adventures lately? Hi to all my special friends and hope everyone has a great weekend.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • Thanks for posting this because it reminded me to contact the local raptor enthusiast group. The owls who live in our old turn-of-the-previous-century grain mill tower are fine (we see them hunting at dusk regularly!)and producing an owlet or two each year. However, in our agricultural area which is between two close-by rivers we also see several varieties of hawks and I'd like to provide some nesting boxes for them, just not sure what the various varieties of hawks like enough to use. So thanks for what turned out to be a reminder to go find out!

  • Hello Glue squad buddies,
Hope everyone has had a good weekend! We are behind in responding but loved the pictures of nesting boxes, especially the little screech owl!
Good job Ruby on your Bronco's win. Good effort Missy Chow on your team.
Glad you did well at the vet's office Zoe!
Miz Lu do you follow hockey?? I love the New Jersey Devils team. Have a great Monday!!
    purrrs, James Dean

  • Well Ruby, our boys did it...we are Super Bowl bound! We have no doubt that our house is going to be decorated in blue and green! The neighbors have left their 12 man flag flying and there were fireworks going off all over the neighborhood when the game was over...I,of course, grabbed my favorite Hedgehog and got under mom's bed till they were done!
Thanks for the pictures of the nest boxes. I think it would be really cool to put a couple in the backyard but mom is afraid the hawks and owls would see Sophie as a great little snack...
Have a great week every body...we'll check in later to see what everyone else was up to over the weekend
    Chloe, the Queen Chiweenie
