A Blanket Of Compost For The Gardens

Posted by F&S

Well, it was finally warm enough to spend some extra time outside to do a little exploring.  The farm crew was busy yesterday doing a lot of work in the flower beds.  We Frenchies learned that compost is really an important ingredient when gardening.

BTW - Maddox, we were sorry to hear about your broken valve and hope you got things back to normal.

Hi Pete! We're so happy to see you. How was your trip to Nepal? Bet it was quite cold there, as well!

You seem to be very busy in this garden.

The bed is very nicely cleared.

Chhewang, what are you pointing to?

Why it looks like new plant shoots pushing through the ground. Isn't it kind of early for this to happen, seeing that it's so very cold?

I bet you are going to cover this garden with a thick layer of compost.

Compost is a very important thing to add to the garden. It protects the plants from the cold and helps to keep the soil from frost heaving, which can really harm the plants.

Plus, all this decomposing matter will further break down, proving the plants with nutrient rich microbes. It also smells kind of funky.

  • You girls have the most beautiful outfits.

  • Happy Friday Francesca, Sharkey and Glue Squaders!
You two ladies are smokin' hot in those sweaters, by the way. Bet it was great to finally get out and about and not couped up in the house. I, Brutus like being outside too. Max likes outside if the temps are above 50.
Does anyone have big plans for the weekend? Don't think there's much going on around here. Mom and Dad are both off work all weekend....that's a great thing.
Hope everyone has a great time doing whatever you are doing this weekend.
We are going back to bed!
    Pug and kisses,
    Brutus and Max

  • It's amazing what a bit of sunshine can do, huh! :) After all the recent Winter weather, having the sun out kind of gives you hope!

Aw, the funky smell of compost. Not pleasant, but certainly beneficial to the plants!

    Happy Friday to all!

  • Good Morning F & S

Glad to see you were able to get out and enjoy some sunshine. Mom said it's suppose to warm up the next few days :)

Was this a long week or what? I'm happy it's Friday mom said we are relaxing all day tomorrow. I hope that means we are spending time in the kitchen cooking up some good stuff.

Maddox I hope you fixed all your plumbing problems. Karen must have been an unhappy camper - you better give her lots of kisses.

Brutus and Max enjoy your weekend with mom and dad. We all plan on watching lots of football with good football snacks - YUM!!!

Hey Ruby - what is it these days you sleeping late???

    Enjoy your weekend everyone!!!

    Zoe

  • Girls,
Thank you soooooooo much for thinking of us with the broken valve situation. Yes, everything is back to normal. That was a lot of work but we got it done. It is funny to read a blog about gardening in the winter. That crew at Martha's is busy year round. That is job security for them.
We woke up to more snow. Just a little amount this time. Snow today and back up in the 50's tomorrow. Maybe Mother Nature has the Pandemic flu and her medication is making her a little loopy and that is why the weather is so screwed up lately.
Sunday is my human brother's birthday. His name is Scott. He is the military guy I mentioned before. So, Sunday will be a very good day here. Karen and Mammy Jean will take Scott and his family out for his birthday. You know what that means. I am in charge and I have hours to replenish my biscuit stash. I have been neglecting my treats because of stuff going on here but I will finally get to stockpile big time. Oh yeah!
    Have a great weekend
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
This has really been one of those weeks here for me. Everyone seemed to be busy with something and not much time for me. This makes me be “under foot” as Mommy calls it. I can’t help it if I want to take a nap where she is walking. She says that I can nape anywhere except in the doorways. Well, how else is a guy going to keep track of what’s going on around him? I’m glad that the weekend is here and things will be back to normal. Have a good, and safe, weekend all.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi F, S, &GK+ Glue Squad, How nice that the weather was so much warmer and you 2 sweet girls in your charming outfits sure had fun checking out the work by Pete and Chhewang by covering so much of the plant areas with compost to protect them! Mom just had a great time seeing Martha's great blog about adding the compost, also! Our weather is a bit warmer, but it is very wet! Can't wait for the sun to come out so I can take a nice walk! Sure hope GK is doing well and please give him a hug for me! Nice to hear from Margaret, Brutus and Max, Gail, Zoe, and Maddox again! Maddox, sure glad you could help fix that broken valve and say Happy Birthday to your brother, the military guy, Scott on Sunday! Hope you all get better weather and have a safe weekend! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello Everybody:
The blog today (and Martha's blog) is sooo interesting! Our mom would love to be out in the garden spreading compost, she is so envious - we think she just likes to play in the dirt! Riley boy here - I tell you, I could make exceedingly fine excavations in all that new compost. I'm mostly white, but by the time I was finished I would be black as the ace of spades! What I wouldn't do to get an afternoon in that dirt - the smells would be intoxicating to me and my sisters! Well, more snow today - woke up to another 2" on the ground, but we are supposed to get about 40 degrees tomorrow! Crazy weather, but we hope it melts all the ice, we are walking again but its soooo hard for our Mom and Dad to walk upright cause its so slippery! They need spikes on their boots, then everyone could just motor across the ice! Nothing much happening this weekend, probably some grocery shopping and maybe some painting - nothing that involves us to any large degree. Oh well, we'll make our own fun in the backyard for sure! Love and Beardie bounces, Martha, Miz Lu and Riley boy.

  • Hello Girls & all my Glue Squad Buddies,
Yep, Zoe, I overslept today,6:15, that never happens. Mom and I are usually up by 5. Mom has been worried about moving an older friend to a nursing home, but tomorrow is his furniture move day and Monday, him. So while Mom has been worrying, I have taken my "cc" duty very seriously---up several nights from 1:30 on. But Mom says no more. After move day tomorrow, it is party central for Bronco game day on Sunday. This playoff is serious stuff, but honestly, whoever plays, as long as there is football, I am like Zoe, I get snacks and a party. Zoe, Mom and I feel your pain about wearing the stretchie stuff after the holidays, but like Scarlet O'Hara, I'll worry about that tomorrow. Karen, I am glad the kennel is back to normal. Moving that crew into the house during the pipe incident, you should have gotten Martha to get the jet and all the Glue Squad could have had supervising and help duty.

Boy, this composting looks great. I kind of like to do much landscaping in that good compost stuff. Smells fresh and good. Looks like all the crew is back and on the job again. What are your plans for the weekend? We won't be getting snow, only in the 40's-50's, good football weather. Today a walk to help the old muffin top go away. Everyone eat, drink and watch football all weekend and have a GEM of a time.
    Love & licks,
    Ruby

  • Looking good today little Misses.
The only mulch that is getting moved around here is where the snow was shoveled away for my personal pottie place. We still have a lot of snow to melt away. It's cloudy & misting here and the streets are all dirty slush. We are still planning for an ice skating & sledding party tomorrow. I'll be watching from the porch. Papa will turn on the floor warmer and the room heater, that's where I'll be while they're out on the lake & the kids are sliding down our little hill.
    Have a great weekend everybody.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Morning Girls & Glue Squad Buddies - Happy Friday everyone!! Landscaping already - we still have some snow on the ground. But it gives Mom ideas for the spring :) . Isn't it great to be able to go outside and check things out - I went for a walk this morning and Dad took me out yesterday too. Maybe Mother Nature will cooperate in the next few days and give us comfortable temperatures to thaw out. Maddox, glad everything got fixed at the kennels, no more leaks. How are the pups doing & Hootie? Happy Birthday Scott, enjoy your special day. Spa day tomorrow, having a bad "fur" day today. Football this weekend. No other special plans for me, well maybe a nap or two. Hi to all my friends ;) .

    Till next time
    Missy Chow

  • :-) just a short note....waiting for the cable guy and phone company...the phones went dead...our brand new expensive padio doors are leaking cold air like crazy...the new floors are moving, the whole house is contracting from this cold...yikes
This weather is so depressing, Kiity is mopping around getting cabin fever :-(
Anyway I'm alive and Thankful for that, eh!
Have to go and comment on yesterday's sweet Dr Pia's post...all Kikats!

Have a good relaxing day...well at least try...

  • Get out the purple and gold...the Saints are coming to town!! Mom has purple beads on the front door..there has been more trash talking going on than normal and everyone is excited...but all I want to know is when are the snacks going to show up? I know mom has stuff stashed in the fridge for tomorrow and no one will miss a small bite of cheese or slice of ham..I mean, I only want a bite! Patience is not one of my strong points.
Chewy, you better batten down the hatches..saw the weather report on the news this morning and there is a big storm coming..please tie a big rock to Lucinda's leg so she doesn't blow away..tell her it was my idea if she yells at you! Ruby, tell your mom to hang in there, it's almost over..we'll be thinking of ya during the Broncos game...this is Mayers 1st football season with us and he really gets into it...when the crowd cheers he throws his little head back and howls in delight..
Hope everyone has a great weekend and can't wait to catch up with everybody on Monday!
    GO SAINTS
