Where The Honeybees Are Spending The Winter

Posted by F&S

We Frenchies noticed that the beehives weren't where they had been all summer long and we wondered where they'd been moved to.  We fired up the engine of the Kawasaki and took a little drive to see where they might be.

That's right, Francesca. The hives have been placed here because they'll receive full winter sun and are protected from the cold north winds.

They've also been wrapped with roofing paper, which helps to keep the cold out and the heat in. And because it's black, it pulls in the heat of the sun.

The entrance to the hive has also been reduced to just a small hole. Why do I see dead bees here at the entrance?

Franny, bees need to be practical. When nectar in the field becomes scarce, the worker bees drag the drones out of the hive and don't let them back in, causing them to starve to death.

It may seem cruel, but eliminating the drones reduces the consumption of winter honey stores. This practice stops in the spring when the drones are needed again to mate with the queen.

  • Good morning everyone,
Geez, the poor bees that get kicked out of the hive to starve. Cruel. Martha should have plants for the bees where she keeps her tropical plants Carlos could use the Kawasaki to run the bees to the new place where it would've warm and they would have nectar. Problem solved. Moving on , how did everyone make out for Thanksgiving? Did everyone experience Bloat Friday? Hehehehehe
I guess everyone knows by now that our very special friend Maddy has passed away. The Glue Squad came through yet again in bringing happiness into her life with cards, emails , pictures and gifts.
    Waiting to hear from everyone,
    Maddox

  • Good Morning F & S

I'm glad I'm not a Bee, living in a box wrapped up in roofing paper for the winter and sending your friends out to starve? I don't think so :(

I had a wonderful Thanksgiving we had lots of people to our house with all kinds of food. I used my sad Zoe face and got lots of tastes, works every time ;)

I'm starting to get sad mom got out her luggage and it's time for her Aruba trip with her mom and sisters again. I hate this time of year, the only good thing is that dad stays home with us and we're not getting Super Nanny. Dad told me I better be on my best behavior because Santa is watching. I better not take any chances while mom's away I haven't been too good this year and there isn't much time left.

I think I'll do some online shopping since mom left for work and dad is still sleeping. It is Cyber Monday you know...........

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I’m in the doghouse again this morning. I had to go outside and when I came back in my Mommy was trying to take care of my tail. I barked at her and growled which woke Daddy up. He came in and told me to behave myself. I didn’t like his attitude and started growling at him. It was when I jumped up and showed my teeth that I learned something new. That bottled water he drinks has a grape flavor to it. When one has water poured in the face, one stops growing very quickly. Lesson learned; don’t challenge the leader of the pack unless you want to pay a price or have your face washed. That was five minutes ago; we’re good now.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
I am with Zoe, the bee's life is not an easy one. Poor things getting kicked out if they don't rank up there. I hope Martha's new plan will help with the survival of more bees at least.

Yep, I experienced Bloat Friday. It was fun getting there though. I got my very own, no onion (why are onions and garlic bad for dogs anyway-does anyone know?) dressing and all the company gave me little morsels all day long. I slept most of Friday as I was in high performance mode on Thanksgiving. Weston says we should call it Ruby Day, as it was a celebration of me. And rightly so, I am Lady Ruby Gem you know.

Setting up the last of Christmas today. Supposed to drop 40 degrees by Wednesday and snow. My Peyton man led the Broncos to another win--yahoooooooooooooo!!!
Brutus and Max, we taped The Christmas Spirit and started watching it and it is really good, but fell asleep. Good thing we taped it. Saw the Jam Store at the beginning, and hope to see it again.

Thank you all again for bringing smiles to our special friend Maddy. She is in heaven now, and I know she is tossing the ball for our Basil, Cora Belle, Tasha, Precious and so many others. Glue Squad you came through as always, and helped someone smile.

Well, can hardly wait to hear what everyone did on Thanksgiving. Have a GEM of a day.
    Love and licks, Ruby

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, You two sweet girls sure did a great job taking us out to see the new place where the bee hives are during the cold winter time! I love all of the bees and feel sad to find out that the worker bees chase out the drones during the winter time and then let them back in in the spring! You girls must have had fun driving the Kawasaki again and I just love all that you share with us to enjoy! Bet you had a great Thanksgiving weekend! Hope you have another great day and hug GK for me! Maddox and Karen, Mom and I are so sorry to hear that your special friend Maddy has passed away and we know that he will be loved at the Rainbow Bridge with so many of our other friends like our sweetheart Cricket. Zoe, sure hope you have fun with your Dad while your Mom is away to Aruba for a while! Kirby, sure hope your tail is better and that you won't growl or show your teeth at Mom and Dad ever again! Ruby, thank you so much for sending Mom and me such nice emails and we certainly enjoy seeing all of your beautiful photos! We had our Thanksgiving Dinner on Saturday night after going shopping at Costco and Home Depot and finally my cousins and uncle Tim were here to enjoy the meal that Mom made for all of us! Hope you all have another great day and will check back later to read more comments! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Good morning ladies,
I, too, am glad I am not a bee! Being a spoiled dog is just fine with me.
I am happy that the bees are all safe and sound for the winter.
The house is all lit up and sparkly. Mimi & Papa worked all weekend. Mimi had bows to make & because of all the glitter, she sat outside to make them. Now we have sparkles on the sidewalk, too!
We didn't have company for Thanksgiving. Mimi had the butcher cut a small turkey in half and she made dressing in a casserole, browned the turkey in a skillet, poked a lot of holes in the skin, put the turkey on top of the dressing and covered the whole thing up with foil and baked it. The kitchen smelled just like a big turkey was cooking! We ate in the dining room with candles and really enjoyed the quiet day.
Football, the Bears lost again. Nice guys, just not Super Bowl material this season.
    Have a great day everybody.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • :-) Oh my gosh, I never knew that about Bees! Sounds way too familiar about a German leader who did this. I have no idea why he popped into my mind, but he did..... :-(
F&S you are brave to investigate the bees...I have to rethink my affections for bees ;-)

Kirby now you be a good dog, you should never growl or show your teeth to the hand that feeds you...hope the grape water did the trick. Zoe tell your mama to enjoy her trip, wish it was me going. Maddox and Ruby hope you get over the bloat, I'm working on mine ;-) DDR great to hear you guys had a enjoyable TY meal...
Sound like everyone had a good TY...except for the news about our dear Maddy, God rest her soul!
Kitty has been good her new routine is very welcoming, she doesn't wake us up at 4-5am anymore..hope this lasts.
Got to run, I had a very stressful weekend knowing someone got into my computer and bank account...I don't even want to think about all the changes that must be done...overwhelming in deed!
    Hugs to all,
    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Well Hello Sharkey, Francesca, GS buddies,
That is a dark story about the poor bees shutting out the drones. We like bees but did not know they would shut drones out of the hive on purpose in the winter. I hope the other bees keep warm and toasty, cold out now in the East.
Brrr, have to warm up and puff out my persian hair coat today. I did not get any turkey but Abby got some last night with special turkey shepherd's pie... seems like Jimmy should get something too. On Thanksgiving someone slipped her apple pie, she ran in the kitchen with whipped cream on her lower lip!!
Abby was so exhausted Friday after playing for hours with younger relatives that she did not go into work.
I am sad to hear about our friend Maddy. We will always remember her in our thoughts and hearts.
Zoe, do not be sad about your mama going off to beautiful Aruba and tropical breezes and SUN. Kirby, hope your tail feels better soon. Rebel is really handsome, loved your picture! Missy Chow, are you ready for santa? Ruby, good job on your holiday feast. Kitty, did you get any turkey?? Hugs to Dudley.
Have to get ready for the red suited man now..
purrrrs and happy manic Monday to all,
James Dean the persian boy cat

  • Good morning, Francesca, Sharkey and GK.
Boy those bees are brutal. Guess they do what they have to in order to survive, right?
Friday, Saturday and Sunday we supervised Dad putting up all the outdoor Christmas decorations. There's a lot! Lights and wreaths and gingerbread houses and people and reindeer and more stuff. Whew! We are tired.
We are so sorry to hear about Maddy passing. She is pain free and healthy now. Hope she has a chance to see our brother, Sparky, at the Rainbow Bridge. So sad.
Well, we tried to watch that movie "The Christmas Spirit". We stayed with it for a hour and a half....couldn't take it anymore. We didn't see that Jam Lady except for the very beginning of the show.
Oh well, they should have asked us to help write and produce that thing! Right????
The temps are suppose to plummet at the end of this week so we are off to the patio.
    Pugs and kisses
    Brutus and Max

  • Wow, is it over yet? When you have legs that are 2inches long, Bloat Friday takes on a whole new meaning. I sure didn't have much clearance between my tummy and the floor by Friday night! It was warm and cozy in our house and all I could do was streach out on the couch and count my blesings. Sophie and Mayer were cuddled up in their chair and mom was putzing around in the kitchen and every so often she would hear these little sighs of contentment coming from the living room! All was right in our little world!
Sophie is in BIG TROUBLE~another cherry on top of the holiday weekend Sundae~because she has learned how to get on the kitchen table! Mom was reading the paper yesterday morning and we hear this strange noise coming from the kitchen. Mom didn't get up to investigate right away; but I have to know what's going on in my house at all times, so off I went. I could not believe my eyes. There was Sophie in the middle of the kitchen table...I couldn't believe my eyes. How in the heck did that little teeny, tiny dog get on the table?!! She didn't even look embarassed or ashamed....just sat there wagging her tail like hey look where I am. of course,I knew it was my job to go get mom and show her what her "little angel" was doing!..all she did was pick her up and put her on the floor and laugh! How not fair is that?!! To make a long story short, our kitchen chairs don't fit flush under he table and the little rat jumped up in the chair then it was just a short hop to the table. I still don't quite get it, there were no treats on the table or anything, I just have to chalk it up to Sophie being silly little Sophie. Mom has fixed the problem so now she will sit under the table and whine for someone to pull a chair out...and that aint going to happen! Gotta get out our heavy coats and go out with mom to check and make sure we have the outside of our house buttoned up for the artic air that is headed our way. Weather man says it will be too dry for snow, but hey, this is the Pacific Northwest...we have to be ready for anything...
    later Squadders...
    Chloe, the Queen Chiweenie

  • Aw, I'm not really a bee girl, but it it sad to see the drones kicked to the curb. Poor little buzz heads! :)

Well December is here already...decoration are up...there is a chill in the air, luckily no snow yet. Yet.

Soon I'll be turning 49 (gulp). I might feel just like that drone! :)

    Happy Monday to all
    gail
