The Burlapping Begins!!!

Posted by F&S

There is so, so much to do getting the farm ready for winter.  We Frenchies were making our usual rounds and noticed that the burlap is finally being sewn over all of the shrubs.  The guys better hurry, because snowy weather is marching this way!

Francesca, do you see what's going on here?

Yup. It's the season for burlap.

I guess Chhewang and Phurba are getting warmed up by tackling a small project first, here at the Maple Avenue house. You know that long boxwood allee takes a lot of effort.

Hey, Phurba! As we recall, you're quite good with a sewing needle.

You drape and fold the burlap to fit over the hedges.

Then you expertly sew the seams together. Did you ever consider designing clothes, maybe in something a little finer than burlap? Cashmere, perhaps?

Hi, Chhewang. I see that you begin covering the shrubs by securing the burlap to the top horizontal bamboo pole.

Essentially, you're creating a burlap tent. I bet you're a good camper.

The guys use the same burlap year after year, but they have a big roll of new burlap, which is used to piece in when needed.

Francesca, let's go to the summer house and check out a different method of winter shrub protection.

Pete is covering this tall American boxwood hedge with a plastic netting instead of burlap.

American boxwood can tolerate harsh temperatures and it doesn't need to be covered with burlap. This netting keeps the branches together when snow falls on them. Very clever!

  • Hello Francesca, Sharkey, Chhewang, Phurba, Pete and Glue Squaders! Where is GK?????
Maybe Chhewang and Phurba can design some nice outdoor type clothing. Fleece or wool. What da ya think? hehehe
Well, we are not sewing burlap, but we did help put up and decorate our Christmas tree Tuesday. Since we had 2 inches of snow yesterday morning schools were closed (are you laughing yet, Ruby?) our cousins Kayla and Logan spent the day. Mom had a lunch date so Dad and Logan bought the tree (yes, it's a live one) and we spent the afternoon decorating. Mom was really happy when she got home and saw all the work was complete.
So now all we have to do is wait for the fat guy in the red suit to show up. And, yes, we've been good. No peeing in the house, no running around the neighborhood. So there, Santa!
Mom says there's still the baking of the cookies, but that isn't happening until the weekend before Christmas. Bummer.
It's fra-eezing here...single digits with wind chills in the below digits...so we are not patio sitting for a while....well, Maxie isn't....I, Brutus loooove the snow and the cold.
    Must be off.
    Stay warm and cozy everyone!
    Pugs and kisses.
    Brutus and Max

  • Good morning Glue Squad,
To sew burlap with heavy gloves on, now that is a talent. They should make the people do that on Project Runway. Gee, Karen isn't the only one limping around. Mimi, I hope you feel better. And the story about Miz's sister Kim, she went through a lot. Karen got shots in both knees on Monday but it didn't help. She gets more next week and the week after. So she is hoping that by the time she gets the third set of shots that she will be good to go. Rebel, I had to laugh when I read that you chewed the noses off of the hedgehogs. And Kirby has a bear tree. Kirby, they should get an artificial tree and that way you would gave a bear tree all the time. James Dean, when I was showing, we went all over the country. When we were in Tennessee there was a vendor at the dog show that sold Southern Pecan coffee. Karen loved it. She would bring some ground coffee home with her whenever we went there and then she had them ship some to her once in a while. She would take a swallow and then just sit there and say Ahhhhhhhhh. And she had a goofy smile on her face. Humans! Hehehehehe
Well, I hope Missy Chow, Dudley, Zoe, Martha, Riley, Lucy, Chewy and Black Mamma, Ruby, Abby, Kitty , the Chiweenies and anyone else I missed has a great Hump Day.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Hello Girls & all my Glue Squad Buddies,
Happy Hump Day!!!!! Seems that everyone is getting ready for winter at your house F & S. Dad put the burlap around our blackberry and blueberry bushes. Hoping they won't be dead by spring. Keep up the good work supervising. But what I really want to see is the rest of the home decor. More and more, and lots of bling.

Well this ice seems that it is a dangerous thing. Mimi, Mom feel on the ice in a Sam's Club parking lot last week, and didn't tell Dad right off the bat. She was sore. I can't butt vroom on the ice, must stick to snow, so all you parents better cool your jets and no more butt vrooming. Maddox, I am glad Karen has all you kids, but the pups aren't any help at all, I can only imagine. Chewy and Black Mama, please give James and Lucinda lots and lots of turkey stew to get themselves on top of their game again. Abby and Jimmy, just look forward to Mom's next day off away from the icy roads. Mis, it seems you have had your hands full between Mischief George and your sis. Now everyone, listen here and listen good, the big guy in the red suit appears in 2 weeks from today. I want everyone to start thinking of their letters. If you haven't gotten them off, then do so right away. We are all such a good behaving bunch of buddies, I know Santa will remember us big time. Keep warm and safe and have a GEM of a day.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, How fun it was for you sweet girls to show us how Chhewang and Phurba the crew members were covering some of the shrubs with the burlap! Mom and I just saw Martha's beautiful blog about the snow that came to her Bedford farm yesterday and all of her photos were marvelous! We are sure that the crew will cover the big boxwoods ASAP! We were supposed to get snow, but the temperature went up to the 40s and Mom was able to split more logs and cut some boards for our great fire in the house! How is GK today? Please hug him for me again! Brutus and Max sure hope you stay warm with that cold snow in your area! Maddox, you always write great comments and I always love all that you share! Ruby, you are so sweet to share such lovely comments for all of us to enjoy every day! We were lucky that we didn't get any snow yet and it will get warmer this week! Mom and I still work hard every day getting our wood ready to burn in that great wood stove! Hope all of you buddies are doing well and will check back later to read your comments! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Morning Girls & Glue Squad Buddies - Thank goodness Mom is home today so I can post early. I don't know where she was the last couple of days but she didn't leave the computer on for me. :( But any whoooo...There is always something to do outside during all the seasons. Dad is thinking of using burlap to protect a couple of trees out front, they were "hurting" after last year's snowfalls. Sounds like everyone has their Christmas trees up and decorated and all the baking..Mom..we have to start baking too... I've been very good in not touching our tree, Mom only has one special ornament on it and it's hanging up high too, hehe..It sounds like it was week of falls...Mom tripped too-right over her computer case. so graceful ;. We had a couple of inches of snow yesterday, temps in the low 30's today, brrr.. Well, almost nap time, Happy Wednesday everyone.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • :-) Sure looks like a lot of work keeping up the greenery for the next year! F&S you have nice warm coats on, and are so instructive...really Sharkey, that sewing looks very professionally done...Phurba's head cover looks more like from S.America area...maybe where Alpaca and Llamas live.
Where is uncle Carlos?? Have not seen or heard from him.
Today is hump day and daddie Al goes for breakfast with his golfing buddies...they meet and discuss their yearly trip...I think mommie delia should start doing something like that ;-) daddie put up our Xmas tree and mommie said she doesn't feel like decorating, what a humbug...guess it's back in the box. :-( yes a boxed tree!
Off to eat my Medley cat food meal...today is chicken...yummy! Black Mama, James Dean, and the other fur-felines here a special prurrrr! ;-)
Mama Lynn, you also fell? Take care as well as Karen and the whole GS gang!
    Hugs and purrs from us,
    delia & Kitty ~^, ,^~

  • Good morning ladies,
Hey, I too am wondering where G.K. is! His Fluffiness should be enjoying the cooler temps. Those guys are great at sewing. Professor Maddox has a great idea there. Part of Project Runway should have them sewing while wearing winter mittens or gloves. How funny would that be?
I think all the Moms need to be really careful these days. Maddox, OMG Karen needs shots in her knees!?! OWWWIE! Mimi's knee is getting help from some pills that she was already taking for the burseyetis in her heels. Whatever that is! The heating pad is working overtime. It's so old that the cover is flannel printed with blue roses. I think she'll perk some peppermint coffee and watch some Christmas movies today and I'll snuggle up in the chair with her.
    Have a great day everybody!
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
What day is it? Hay, I said what day is it? Go ahead and guess. It’s Wednesday; that’s what day it is. For some reason that didn’t go over as well as I thought it would. Oh, I see now. That should be “hump” day. Ole Kirby could never tell a joke anyway. If you look under all those burlap tents you may find GK. I’ll bet he took a nap and got wrapped up in the burlap. He’ll get hungry soon and come out taking some of the burlap with him. Can’t hold a good dog back.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi Y'all,
Chhewang and Phurba, I'm quite impressed that you can sew with gloves on. Girls, I wouldn't get too close or they may just burlap both of you! Getting things tucked away for the winter is such a chore!
"Sunshine, on my shoulders, Makes Me Happy"!!!
Thanks to our Canadian neighbors for this clear, sunny sky today! I knew you'd help us out Miz Lu! There's a chill, but it's SUNNY! Doing some yard time today!
I think Mis needs to wrap herself in bubble wrap to avoid injury. She doesn't bounce too well either these days and has so far avoided any problems. And Ruby, Nurse and Maid don't fit well when describing Mis. Those are jobs for Kim's husband. Mis has a, 'Get over it and deal' attitude! And Kim doesn't like to be taken care of either! Both are as stubborn as mules!
James Dean, Mis prefers Hazelnut Coffee but try online at Green Mountain Coffees. Gloria Jeans also used to have a butter pecan that Mis's mom liked, but that was many years ago. A local store here called, A Southern Season should have it too. They're online also. Hope you find what you're looking!
Kirby, you are too funny! Everyone have a great doggy day!
    Dixie Boy

  • You are right, snow is marching this way! And, it's not even officially Winter yet. Sigh...

Hey, Phurba I need a button sewn on my sweater, could you lend your talented sewing skills my way, please! :)

It's going to get bone chilly for the next few days here in NH. Then a 'possible' snow event may arrive during the weekend.

    Make it stop please! :)

    Happy Wednesday to all..
    gail

  • It's Camel day..yeah!! We've done rain, bitter cold, snow and now freezing fog. Our front porch was a solid sheet of ice this morning..both of moms knees have been replaced and her ankle joint has been fused so she wobbles around here anyway...throw a little ice or snow into the mix and she doesn't even stick her nose out the door, let alone her toes! We are supposed to go back to rain by the end of the week so we just have to hold on a few more days and then it will be yard and leash time again..so I think we might do a little baking today...I also have a message from Chewy, Black Mama and the rest of the tribe at Lucinda and James house...they want to tell everyone hi, let you all know they are ok and you'll be hearing from them soon!
Every body have a great and safe Hump Day and keep an eye on your people moms and make sure they stay on their feet, not their knees or bottoms on the ground..Ruby, Maddox, keep a special eye on those wild and crazy women you call "mom"...block the door so they can't get out or wait till they sit down and get up in their laps and give them that "please don't make me move" look...the 3 of us will get up in our moms lap at the same time and every time she even twiches like she is getting up we give her "the look"...it works every time!
    later Squaders
