Still Working On Hurricane Sandy Damage!

Posted by F&S

We Frenchies were patrolling the farm the other day when we came upon Arborists working in the woods.  Watching them prune trees damaged by Hurricane Sandy reminded us that there was another huge project taking place elsewhere on the farm.

Sharkey, do you see what I see? It looks like Martha's arborists, SavATree are here in the maple woods pruning.

Look at the size of that wood dropping! As curious as we Frenchies are, I think it would behoove us to stay right where we are and leave this job to the professionals!

The arborist uses a pole chainsaw for difficult to reach damaged branches.

And he also has a regular chainsaw for cutting larger and easier to reach branches. I don't know if I'd like to be up that high sawing wood.

When he turns off his chainsaws, the men on the ground haul the branches to the wood chipper. Let's show The Glue Squad where all the wood chips go.

Sharkey, here at the compost area, is another machine we don't want to get too close to. This monster is called a tub grinder.

Last week, a different machine called a wood grinder was brought in to chew up all the hundreds of trees that Sandy blew down.

Now, that mountain of chipped wood is being fed into the tub, which grinds it finely. Over time, it will decompose and be used as compost for the gardens. As you can see, nothing goes to waste on the farm.

  • Good morning everyone,
I can't believe that so much damage happened on the farm due to Hurricane Sandy. Wow. That is a huge wood chip pile. Thanks for sharing.
Kirby, I wonder what would happen if you would put duct tape on your tail. It would be like armor. And it comes in all kinds of colors and designs now. You could change it out every once in a while. You could start a fad. It would be known as the Kirby Tail. Hehehehehe
We have another visitor here. Actually we have two guests. sprocket the chow is here for a week and last night a black lab was running around with a ripped leashed hanging off of his collar. So, Karen put him in the little kennel, gave him food and water and this morning she will call the vet listed on his rabies tag to find out who he belongs to. Poor guy. His owners are probably worried about him too.
Everyone have a good day. Zoe said she won't be posting till her mom comes home so I will say it for her. Happy Hump Day
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
I have been up for an hour, I am sooooo excited for the snow. It has been snowing since last night, and we have a few inches. The mountains are really getting it, good for skiing.

Now, for this great compost lesson. I wish I had all that equipment in my landscape design business. Nothing wasting on the farm. I am getting really excited for Christmas and seeing your farm and house for that. Will you girls be helping with the decor decisions?

Now, Kirby, this tail is a problem. Our tails are important for balance and expression, so don't chew up your balance and expression buddy. Maybe some nice aromatherapy to relax you, like lavender.

I know it is hump day, and thanks Maddox for remembering since our Zoe girl is absent. Bet her Mom is having fun in the sun. Not me, I can hardly wait for light to go out and butt vroom in the snow.

Have a GEM of a day all.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, WOW! You sweet, beautiful girls must have had fun watching the SavATree arborists working on all of those maple trees affected by that Sandy hurricane a year ago! Those guys sure were doing a great job and it's a good thing that you didn't try to help them because those branches could have fallen on you! You looked so great in your winter outfits on the Kawasaki! How cold is it there? We are down to 28 degrees this morning and Mom must start a fire inside very soon! Hope Martha has fun in Canada! Please hug GK for me again! Have a great day! Maddox, how thoughtful of your Mom to protect that black lab she found outside and kept in a kennel to find it's parents! Ruby, so glad you are enjoying the latest snow and stay safe! Will check back later for more comments! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Wow, that is a pile of wood chips. I wonder just how long this will take before it can be used for compost. I’ll bet it won’t happen next week. Hehehehe I use my tail to express myself all the time. Right now the expression is, “Stand back or I’ll rip you apart.” Hehehehe Maddox, don’t talk too loud; Daddy may overhear you and go for the duct tape. Or is it duck tape; who knows? Have a good camel day.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Good morning ladies,
Wowy, Zowy! That's a lot of wood. The timber really took a big hit! Like Mimi always says, waste not want not. I waste NOTHING! I lick my food bowl til there is nothing left, not even for an ant!
It is dark, foggy and really warm here today. We're waiting for the snow to come from Ruby's house.
We had a box delivered yesterday & it had some Christmas poppers inside. I hope they're not too loud. Mimi says they are full of candy and a crown to wear while we eat Christmas dinner. I guess the grand children will enjoy it. Sure hope Rebekah doesn't try to put a crown on old Rebel here.
Is your house starting to look bright and shiny?
    Signing off for now.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • :-) now that's what you call a pile!! We'd used the wood chips and sawdust (no Walnut) for horse bedding in the winter. Good to see nothing goes to waste at the Stewart farm. I don't know how you girls could stand the chipper and grinder noise, after a while one wants to scream because of the continuous noise.
So Kirby what gives with the tail? Maybe some Vicks on that area would keep you from chewing. Ruby sweets, I can see you playing in the snow...enjoy! We have had incredible Fog for two days...all day and night making it very dangerous. It's depressing because it's so dark all day...sun where are you? Kitty won't even go out, she sits in front of the patio door outside for a few seconds, turns around to come in and says, Hell No!
All our GlueSquad friends have a great Hump Day! ;-)
    Hugs,
    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Morning Girls & Glue Squad Buddies - Another day checking things on the farm. It's a good idea to stay away from that equipment, stay in your vehicle. Not much happening, as the saying goes, we had frost on the pumpkins overnight, but the temps are suppose to be nice the next couple of days..Mom has her doctor's appt today so can't stay on too long, need to see her off. Maybe when she comes home, she will take a few more decorations down from the attic so we enjoy more Christmas colors, I hope so.. ;) . Maddox, you have company for a few days, sounds like fun. Sure hope Karen finds out where the Lab lives. Hope everyone has a good day-as Maddox said, Happy Hump Day.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • :-) I just lost all that I wrote here and to be honest I'm not going to write it over...in short....sawdust and wood chips make great horse bedding..
Kirby maybe Vicks on your tail area would get you to stop chewing! Ruby sweets I can see you enjoying the snow...

Hoping for a none fog day, it's dark again and bad fog. :-(
Have a great Hump Day GlueSquad!
    Hugs,
    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Hello everyone! Hump Day for sure.
Glad to see Frannie and Sharkey are staying far away from those big machines. Kirbys' tail is the only thing that needs chewing. Right?
Kirby we wonder if duct tape would be horrible to get off your tail. Talking about a BIG OUCH!
Mom is driving me (Brutus) crazy because I'm driving her crazy. I'm scratching, licking and chewing again. I heard her talking with Dad about another vet appointment. Oh NO!
Ruby when you've had enough of that snow, blow some our way! The weather peeps are promising colder temps and snow for this weekend. We will see.
Hey guys....sorry about how crappy that movie "The Christmas Spirit" was. Talk about a giant yawner! We couldn't watch more than 30 minutes of it. At least Mulberry Street in Lebanon looked nice.
Mom has been baking and the house smells great! She said something about doggy treats. Hope so!
And Dad is STILL decorating the outside.
Must be off to help supervise.
    Stay warm everyone!
    Pugs and kisses.
    Brutus and Max

  • Hi Y'all,
Jeepers, that's a big pile to play king of the mountain on. Yep, that's a favorite thing around here, especially with Zeke. He's always the KING.
Rebel, around here the saying goes,
"Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without."
Kirby, it's Duck, duct tape and as the quote above implies, it's a staple around here. It actually is used to get rid of warts and repairing ripped pants(another story), But I don't think I'd use it on my tail! But it is a household staple around here!
Ruby, have a butt vrooming good time in the snow! Mis would rather you keep it out there though. Okay, maybe a couple of inches, but no more.
Maddox, I hope Karen finds that Labs' family. I was thrown out with the clasp of my tie out attached to my very tight collar, but I didn't have any tags. Mis and her family only wanted to find my owners to charge them with neglect. I'm glad this dog found you guys to take care of him. He knew just where to go to get back home.
    Take care everyone,
    Dixie Boy

  • Gee, maybe a beaver or a woodchuck might have come in handy! :)

Although, woodchucks don't really eat wood, he may have had the know how to get the job done.

That is the largest wood chip pile I've ever seen!

One could get lost in there! :)

    Happy Woodsday! :)

  • Hello Everybody:
We are back, Mom has been so busy these last few days at work that we never seem to get any computer time anymore. Its cold and dark and miserable up here, but no snow! Snow at least makes the cold seem better. Mom would love all the mulch and compost that you girls have, my goodness you could cover the earth with those piles.
We have all been pretty good, starting to think about that list, don't want to get on the naughty side. Nothing really exciting going on .... will check back in later to see what is happening to everyone else. Martha, Miz Lu and Riley boy.

  • Wow! I can't believe it! I was living in Miami when Sandy struck. It's truly unbelievable how extensive the damage is that we are still picking up the pieces... what's even more shocking is how quickly our news outlets forget about important stories after they milk it for all its got!

Pia, I would like to get in contact with you about something totally irrelevant to this post. I work for a PR firm and want to send some all natural dog treats over to you for Francesca and Sharkey! I'm not going to bother you with the details here (i'll email you the product description if you like), but the owner of the company's dream (yes, dream) is to be in the Martha Stewart magazine.... but I really want to surprise them with getting their treats to the frenchies because I think it will make them (and the pups!) very happy.

    have a lovely day!
    Lisa
