The Vegetable Greenhouse - Part Two

Posted by F&S

On yesterday's blog, we Frenchies told you all about composting in the vegetable greenhouse, which helps make things grow so much better.  Today, we're going to talk about what's already growing and what's being planted.

It's nice hanging out in the vegetable greenhouse. It's warm and toasty in here. Plus, there are great aromas, particularly this hedge of rosemary. Native to the Mediterranean, this fragrant herb loves this climate!

Sharkey, this parsley is also thriving. Just look haw green and bushy it is. A relative of celery, parsley is very nutritious and imparts wonderful flavor to savory dishes. It's also the world's most popular herb.

Speaking of celery, here's a variety known as cutting celery. You pick the stems individually and they have a vibrant, mildly spicy flavor. Martha enjoys it in her morning green juice.

I see that there are little seedlings growing in these large pots. What could they be?

I suppose the seedlings will be trained to grow up on those strings.

Oh, hi Ryan! What are you getting ready to plant in these furrows?

I see. You're sprinkling carrot seeds one by one. Oh, sorry, I'm stepping on your bed.

I like that you plant different varieties of carrots. That makes things interesting in the kitchen. In addition to orange, carrots can be white, yellow, red, and even purple!

Watching you work, Ryan, is very relaxing. Is there someplace I could lie down for a while?

  • Good morning,
I was thinking. And what I was thinking about was with all the information that you girls give us about so many different things, we could go on that Show Jeapardy and do real well. Heck, the whole Glue Squad could go on as one contestant we would clean up. Who has an in with Alex, the host? Hehehehehe
I am so sorry that I have not been replying to or commenting on everyone's posts but every time Karen gets up to feed these puppies, I get up. My eyes are bloodshot but they are getting fed and that is the main thing. Chow puppies are the same as others. Eyes open at about two weeks. I think Sonya asked about that. Kirby, I won't mention anything about your water and shampoo experience but I was wondering if you got to chase your cat yet? Ruby, you can keep your snow. Rebel, Chewy, Zoe, Dudley, Kitty, Abby, James Dean and all the rest of you Glue Squad maniacs, enjoy Hump Day.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good Morning F & S

So tell me what day is it :) HUMP DAY!!!!!!! And you know every time I say hump day I see that silly camel in my head, he is kind of cute.

F & S you are stepping on all the little sprouts popping up isn't Ryan getting a little upset? I know my mom would be yelling at me to get off the mounds. Did you lay any of the french fertilizer down ;)

Hey Maddox why doesn't your mom get a breast pump for the mama Chow then she can just keep a flow of milk 24/7 for the little guys without having to get up every 2 hours. I'm telling you Chows are high maintenance from the day they enter this world. But they are cute little buggers.

It is chilly here this morning and as much as I hate wearing clothes I might have to break out a jacket soon. Oh the thoughts of snow make me sad :(

  • I have been contemplating carrots, since reading your blog, F&S. If carrots can be red, purple, white, or orange in color, why have Americans become accustomed to carrots only being orange? Why orange? Orange is an o.k. color, but I like RED. Why aren't carrots usually thought of as red, in color? My brain is starting to hurt. I think I'll take a nap. Bye.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I had a treat yesterday. Daddy took my hood off for a while. It was off for about ten minutes before I grabbed my hind foot and started chewing; hood went back on. I don’t think my Daddy listens to me at all. When I growl while he is making me stop biting my foot, he just laughs at me. I thought growling was so others will know that I’m not happy. I guess Mommy and Daddy are immune to my growling. Others back away when I growl at them. The cat even keeps his desistance. One of these days I’ll get to chase him, but until then, the neighbor cat will do. I don’t think that cat is very smart. Every time it tries to jump over the chain link fence, it bounces off the top bar back into my yard; the chase is off again.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, You two sweet, beautiful girls sure did have another great time out there in Martha's beautiful vegetable greenhouse and I love to see all of the vegetables that are already growing and can't wait to see all of the rest as time goes by! I'll bet you will go out to that great greenhouse more and more because it's so warm in there! Thanks for sharing this great blog again and say Hi to GK again! Hope you have another fun day! It's very cold here today with no rain, thank goodness and Mom and I will need to cut up and split more of her logs for our great firewood place to keep warm! Maddox, hope all is well at your house and so nice to hear all about your new baby Chow Chows! Zoe, sure hope you can stay warm today and it's pretty cold here, also! Hope to hear from the rest of you buddies real soon! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • :-) move over Franny and Sharkey I want to spend the day in the greenhouse relaxing, taking in the warmth, smell and atmosphere .....ahhhhh so relaxing!
One of my favorite places to visit as a child would be the Golden Gate Park hothouse Conservatory of Flowers...I would spend hours in there pretending I was somewhere in a tropical place. :-)
I have to take sis to have her other eye done (cataract surgery) so must run.
Happy Wednesday to all the doggies, the new pups and kitties...muahhh! And of course my GS buddies!
    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Good morning ladies,
I agree with Maddox. You have taught us so much that I think we'd be a great Jepardy team! It's just that first, we'd have to speak so Alex could understand us and the buzzer would need to be redesigned for paws.
My Mimi would love to have an indoor garden like yours. She just loves her vegetables, me, not so much.
Zoe, that would be some special pump! I bet Karen is tired but loving every minute.
It's getting cold here, too. Mimi laundered all my sweaters yesterday. I guess the folks will think I smell good, what do they know anyhow! I prefer eau de earthworm myself.
    Happy hump day everybody.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Good Morning Francesca, Sharkey, GK, Ryan and Glue Squad!
We have never seen a Rosemary hedge before. Bet it smells great in that greenhouse.
Maddox, we bet you guys are tired. So how long do you have to get up every two hours to feed those pups?
It's really nipplely here and the weather peeps say it's suppose to get colder this weekend. Highs in the 20's. Yikes!
Mom hauled out the sweaters for me, Max, last Friday. And don't tell her, because I think it's just ruins my "street cred", but that sweater felt pretty darn good. Brutus says to not even talk to him about sweaters or clothes.
Kirby, I can feel your pain concerning that hood. Mom has been threatened me with one. I'm back to scratching, licking and biting myself again. Sometimes a guy just needs to scratch!
You know, Sharkey, you had a good idea, we think we will find a nice, warm quiet place to take a nap.
    Pugs and kisses,
    Brutus and Max

  • Hello all my GS Peeps:
Its Wednesday again, but we haven't seen the camel. Very cold up here now, but no snow, just frosty mornings which warm up to not bad days. I think I could get us an in with Alex - he is Canadian you know and still has an affection for us up here - I'll see if I can get him to answer a fellow Canadian! It would be a team effort, Maddox could be the team captain, F&S the lead answer dogs and all the rest of us could lend support when needed. What a picture we all would make, but I'll bet our Riley boy would be goofing around, trying to check everyone out 15 ways to Sunday! That boy ..... we love him dearly but he does have some funny ways. He also loves to chase cats (and we have two), not to hurt them, just to herd them where he thinks they should go. Well, our Mom would love to be Ryan's assistant, working in that greenhouse or outside every day, sounds like a dream come true for her.
A question for the GS members - when is the proper time to put up your Xmas tree? Do you guys wait until after Thanksgiving and then do it right away - or do some people start early? We have Thanksgiving in mid October and by mid November the lights and Xmas decorations start going up all over. Mom wants to put the tree up now, Dad says we have to wait until December at least. What does the survey say? Wait or do it now. We love Xmas and want to do it NOW! Well, gotta go, let us know what everyone does and we'll go with the popular opinion.
Love and Beardie bounces, Martha, Miz Lu and Riley boy.

  • Hello Girls & all my Glue Squad Buddies,
A bit late today as Mom slept until 7. She never does that, always up at 5. So Dad and I surprised her and did dishes and cleaned and now I get to see the wonderful greenhouse plantings before I go out and decide where the mums need to be planted before the snow tonight. The weathermen better not wuss out on me and just a dusting. I need snow!!! Tomorrow the first Christmas tree goes up---Dad's Fisherman Tree. Yep, a tree with fish. But I am game. After all, I am the supervisor. The trees being put up won't be seen on Thanksgiving. OMG!!! I almost forgot to put up the glass Martha turkeys I am getting so excited about Christmas. Now, Brutus and Max, don't forgot to tell everyone about the movie. When it is on, where it was filmed---DON'T FORGET!!! It is important. Well, everyone I better get to the mum planting. Have a GEM of a hump day---that camel cracks me up.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Sharkey, did you see any catnip in the greenhouse?? Kept trying to see some of the yummy herb for Martha's special cat toys and beds for Christmas. We are so inspired by the beautiful greenhouse pictures that this coming year we will start vegetables early in the house to get a head start on our Victory garden.
Mom loves the pictures of both you girls walking around between the furrows. Zoe, do not be sad, after all its nice and sunny out today! Rebel, earthworm perfume sounds so nice to Abby! She loves to sit in the herb patch of our garden when its warm.
Maddox, sounds like you are working very hard watching over the new chow chow puppies, future champions in the making. Abby has to wear her fleece coat tonight since she was cold yesterday during Mom's commute.
Riley, Miss Lucy, hope you wait to get a live tree until December and water it well. We have had some dry trees in the past that were purchased too early and not watered. My Mom has a real pine tree in our field that she decorates for the birds. It was less than a foot tall in 1997, now over six feet tall.
Abby would like to do a Glue Squad Thankful day before turkeyday. She must be thinking like Maddox on her dog bed. Purrrs to all, especially Traveler Ruby, Sweet Dudley, Super Zoe, Missy Chow, Rebel,Professor Maddox, Kirby, and beautiful Kitty!
    James Dean the persian boy

  • That greenhouse looks like the perfect place to spend a cold, late autumn day like today, Francesca Baby! Mom took us to one of the dog parks today and brrrrr! it was cold and windy. All of us moved quite briskly to stay warm, but we had fun because there were some nice dogs to play with and kind people to pet us. The dog park is near the airport, so every so often a plane goes really close overhead. Some of the dogs don't like it, but I don't mind.
I like the camel, too. When Mom and Dad worked for the Radio City dancing ladies, there were two camels for the living Nativity. Mom said one of them was very nice and would give kisses, but the other one preferred kicks to kisses.
Still, at our house, we do not call today 'hump day' it is Wing Wednesday! Mom and Dad meet up with friends at a club near the great big lake and eat wings and have lots of fun. They always bring some home for us, and then Dad takes the good meat off the bones and lets us enjoy Wing Wednesday, too!!
    A bientot!

  • Afternoon Girls & Glue Squad Buddies - it seems like forever since Mom booted up my computer so I could post. What's wrong with that woman anyways?? But any whoooo..Congratulations to Karen, Val & Maddox, new pups, how exciting? Hope everyone is napping when the pups nap. How fun it must have been shopping in Home Depot, the closest I get to it is when I go with Dad and see the big sign from the car from outside. Too many things for me to check out inside. Good job helping Ryan with the greenhouse garden. It will be like having summer all year long with fresh veggies. Miz Lu, Martha & Riley, in the past, Mom has put the Christmas tree up a week or two into December at our house. Last year was a different situation as I was still a bit frisky and getting into things and not knowing how things would go, she only did a little tree, you might say (out of my reach ;) , if you know what I mean, hehe). This year is still up for discussion but I'm sure she will figure something out. Well, better get some nap time in, have been busy on backyard patrol today.
Hope all my friends are doing well, regards to everyone.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • Carrots! Delicious! I didn't know you could get them in other colors too. That is so interesting. Thanks for sharing.
