Potting Begonias

Posted by F&S

We Frenchies went to the greenhouse to visit Ryan and he was potting up a few begonias.  These plants were rescued by Martha's sister, Laura, who saw them in their friend, Jim Klinko's outdoor urn,  as they were about to be zapped by a heavy frost.  We think they'll be quite happy in their new greenhouse home.

Sharkey, look at these rather sad looking begonias in need of potting.

I heard that Martha's sister, Laura, rescued them from an outdoor urn that was about to get zapped by freezing temperatures.

Knowing how much Martha loves begonias, Laura thought she would bring them to the greenhouse and let Ryan take care of them.

Ryan chose gorgeous Guy Wolff pots to plant them in and he's using a really good potting mix. http://www.guywolff.com/

Franny, this mix contains lots of white Perlite, which gives the roots good air circulation and good drainage.

Did you know that there are thousands of species and varieties of begonias and they're usually divided into groups based on the differing root structures of the plants?

Some are classified as tuberous, and other as fibrous. But the ones Martha loves are rhizomatous begonias, like these.

They make stunning houseplants all year long because of the amazing colors, shapes, sizes, and textures of their foliage.

Although these leaves are a bit wind-damaged, they have great coloration and they spiral around like a snail shell.

Ryan cut off much of the wind damage and he says the plants should begin looking great in about 2 to 3 months, as new leaves form in their protected greenhouse environment.

Sharkey, what's not to love? Beautiful begonias in beautiful Guy Wolff pots! What doesn't look good planted in Guy?

  • Good morning everyone,
Well. How did the election at the farm turn out? Who had victory parties and who is trying to figure out what happened, why they lost? Rescue plants. Just like rescue dogs. You treat them for any issues they may have going on, you clean them up and put them in a new house, give them love and watch them flourish. I live in two different places, as you know. When I am in Maryland, Gerry has plants all over the place, inside and outside the house. When I am in Pennsylvania with Karen, well that is another story. Poor woman tries biut she can't grow anything. She had some kind of plants in the house that were it doing well. So she put them outside and they were doing good. Then they started to die. She found out they were not plants that stay around all the time. They are I guess what you call seasonal. She got so mad she started whacking them with a rake. Yes indeed, that was a vision. Hehehehehehehe
Hump Day. Warmer today. You double coated dogs, get outside now before the sun comes out.
    Love to all,
    Maddox
PS. How was the birthday Sonya?

  • Good Morning F & S

The plants look great but the dirt looks YUMMY!! Did you eat any? I love to eat dirt out of the pots in fact mom has a picture where she caught me having a little snack. I love to eat potting soil so does Sophie. Mom has to place small stones in the floor planters in the house so we don't dig holes. It's so good I just can't help myself.

So I'm curious who won the election? I hope you figured out what the hairballs were doing before the final count.

Maddox when mom read your post this morning she started to laugh. She said she can just picture Karen out there having plant rage!!! Maybe you should surprise her with some plastic plants maybe she won't kill those :)

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Up and at em this morning early. My Mommy has to go to PT early so I am up and ready to go. Only one problem, I will have to stay home while she goes. Daddy said his knee hurt a little so he won’t be going to the Y while she takes her PT. When I first saw this post this morning, I thought that the begonias were doing something. Then I read it and found that you were doing something to the begonias. Ole Kirby doesn’t see very well with just one eye. Well ole Kirby’s one eye needs a nap.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, You marvelous girls sure did a great job showing us how Ryan fixed those lovely begonias that Laura found at Martha's friend Jim Klinko's outdoor urn and saved them from being frozen! I'll bet Jim was happy about that! How nice to see some more of those Guy Wolff pots to plant those begonias and they look great! My Mom has some of those beautiful pots! Can't wait until Friday when GK will be 4 years old! Please hug him again for me! Have a great day! Was fun to hear from Maddox and Zoe this morning and will love to hear from the rest of you buddies! Our weather is a bit wet, a bit cool, a bit sunny, and a bit foggy and cloudy! I go our when ever I can, especially when it's dry! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Morning Girls, Ryan & Glue Squad Buddies - Bet those begonias will look great in a few months. With Ryan doing the transplanting, and you girls supervising once again, the plants on the right road! Okay, who counted the votes? Who's the winner?? It's a little warmer this morning and deck time for me for awhile. Rain possible tomorrow, means wet paws..yuck! Sonya, how did you celebrate, hope you had a nice day. Chloe/Husky, glad you are okay from your raccoon, be careful. Riley, is Mom going to have a graduation party for you this weekend? Hope all my buddies are doing okay, got to run..off to relax on the patio. Happy Wednesday ;)

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
I, like everyone else am in suspense on who won the election. I bet there was a recall, or someone got carted off to jail for ballot tampering. I know the PSI team of Franny and Sharkey had it all figured out before too long though.

Now these pretty Begonias. Mom says her Grandma from Germany raised all kinds of them when she was growing up. They were everywhere in her house, and as you say, so many different kinds. That makes us think we should start growing them in the greenhouse with our orchids. Christmas idea!!!!

Dad's appointment went very well yesterday and he is released from no driving and the doctor said he was recovering far above average. I do believe it is to the great Ruby Gem nursing, don't you? So, I hear the folks planning a little mountain trip to their special lake, about a 3 hour drive for 3 days next week, and yes, it will be my first trip to the mountains. My lake I walk around is open space, but in the mountains, I hear there are lions and tigers and bears, oh my!! What Mom, no lions and tigers, just bears and coyotes and wolves. I will be on a leash at all times and close to the folks. I think I will have fun, don't you? Have a GEM of a hump day all.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Happy Hump Day, Francesca, Sharkey, Ryan and Glue Squad!
We are pretty sure that farm shuts down when you ladies are not there. Potted Begonias. Hummm...
Ok, so what happened with the election yesterday? You can't leave us hanging like a chad. We need an investigation...call 60 Minutes...they'll get to the bottom of this. We can call it Cantitoe-gate.
Maddox, we laughed when we read the attack of the annuals!
And Zoe....dirt eating? Really? Guess we all have different tastes. Talk about going organic! hahahahaha
Ruby Gem...of course your Dad is recovering fast. You are the Super Nurse!
The weather guys promised rain today...we'll see. Right now we have clouds and wind and wait....there's our brother Gideon cleaning out the gutters....no one told us he was coming over! They don't tell us anything! We must be off......
    Brutus and Max

  • Good morning ladies,
That's really great that Laura saved the begonias. Reminds me of the tv show Wonder Pets. Have you ever watched that with the grandchildren? The Wonder Pets go around saving baby animals using teamwork!
That's what we're all about, teamwork, right everybody?
Sure hope Sonya had a great birthday.
It's rainy here (we need it). Nice and cozy, just right for a nap.
Glad to know that Ruby's Dad is getting on so well. Ruby, enjoy the mountains, Mimi says they are so beautiful. A big and new adventure for you.
    Have a great day everybody.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Those begonias are going to be lovely when they've had a chance to flourish. Mom tries to have plants in the house, but when she goes away no one remembers to water them (ahem, Dad!) and so we are not very green around here anymore.
So, Glue Squad peeps, I need to ask for your help. Auntie Ellen is having surgery today. It's not a major surgery, but it is to her heart and she's kinda scared. So if everyone could send their best Glue Squad mojo to her so everything goes well and she's up and on her feet soon, that would be excellent. I want her to get better fast, even if she DID forget to feed us last night while Mom and Dad were at work.
    A bientot!

  • Hello Francesca, Sharkey and Glue squad buddies,
First of all Happy Belated Birthday to Sonya!! Batgirl sends her best woofs to you too, thats Abby the pug/peke/frenchie.
Guess what day it is Zoe??? By the way Power to the Cats!!! We are mighty felines, Black Mama, Vivaldi, Kitty, Empress Tang, Guinness, Mischief, and many of my cat buddies! Purrrrs to all.
My gran mom transplanted beautiful begonias and Mom saved a catnip plant from our frost so we have a green house back porch!
Dudley, Rebel, Minnow and the Chiweenies hope you are all keeping warm with the cooler temperatures.
I am working on planning holiday gifts with Mom. She ran this morning and is having tea with me before work. Ruby, hope you are packing for your road trip next week, lots of biscuits and supplies.
    hugs and purrrrs to all,
James Dean the persian boy cat.

  • Hello all you GS peeps! We too are wondering what happened in the great farm election? Was there a recount, did Vivaldi get indicted for ballot tampering? Gots to know!
Mom has been saving a few plants here and there, she repotted her oleander bush and brought it in the house, she had to use a big hammer to smash off the pot it was growing in, it was certainly time to replant that bad boy. She keeps it in a room where we can't get to it, oleander is very poisonous to us so we need stay away. She only keeps it because it came to her as a small cutting from a friend years ago, that friend is no longer with us. Mom is a sentimental gardener, for sure. Ruby, your upcoming trip sounds very exciting, we would love to join you! Our human sister Sam went to Jamaica today, lots of sun, surf and sand for a week. Sounds wonderful, especially the water part! Well gotta go, our best and strongest Mojo is being sent to Baby Favor's Auntie Ellen - get well soon!
Love and Beardie bounces, Martha, Miz Lu and Riley boy.

  • :-) Better late then never... so here I am. Today I had to take my sister to have Cataract surgery to one eye, next eye two weeks from now.

Years ago visiting Lake Geneva, they had potted street urns with Begonia's, a small piece (3 in.) broken off and dropped to the street. I planted it and now is a huge plant...I bring it in the house for the winter so I don't lose it...been doing this for 4 years now.
I brought in so many plants this year, that the house looks like a Nursery or Funeral parol...but Kitty loves sleeping under the plants, she thinks she's outside ;-)

Prayers for (Baby Favors) Auntie Ellen, that all will be well.
James Dean, Kitty sends her Prurrs and sweet meuwws! =^._.^=

Hugs to all our GS friends!
    delia & Kitty =^. .^=
