In Search Of Moss

Posted by F&S

Because we Frenchies are so astute and so good at finding things, we are often called upon to carry out special missions.  Yesterday, Ryan the gardener, enlisted our services.

Our pal, Ryan the gardener, asked us to track down some moss in the woods so that he could decorate some potted plants with it.

We put some warm jackets on and headed out into the wild. Notice the snow? First of the season!

I thought a good place to look might be this dry brook. It hasn't rained in quite some time and there's no water running through here.

Sure enough, I found moss right off the bat!

I found a nice soft carpet on this large rock and I brought over my scraping tool.

Here's some velvety moss which I will add to the stash.

Franny, did you know that moss is made up of many, many small plants growing next to each other?

Mosses have no root system and they obtain all their nutrients from the air. These plants require nothing more than shade, acidic soil, and moisture to flourish. That's why they can grow on rocks.

Let's take this tray to Ryan in the greenhouse. I can't wait to see what he does with this moss!

  • Good Morning F & S

What day is it??? HUMP DAY :)

Nice pile of moss you found for Ryan I'm sure he'll be happy. We have moss growing in our yard but mom is always trying to kill it. We have lots of shade on the side of the house and it grows where she wants the grass to grow. I guess it doesn't get enough sun. I can't wait to see Ryan's finished planter.

So first snow of the season yesterday it was very pretty to watch from my warm cozy sofa :) I was happy it didn't stick to the ground I don't like to walk on snow.

Dad is not happy this morning the window cleaning guy is coming to do all the windows inside and out. He is a strange dude but does a good job. Dad said it's too cold but mom said let him do his job he knows what he is doing. Mom plans on leaving before he arrives so she doesn't have to talk to him - smart move mom ;)

I think I'll go hide until he leaves. Have a nice day everyone!!!

  • Good morning everyone,
I am sorry I didn't post yesterday. We went on a road trip. Thanks for letting all my friends know Ruby. Have fun on your trip congrats Riley on getting your diploma. Franny and Sharkey did a moss hunt and I went on an address hunt in New Jersey. We went to pick up Val. She is a chow that is going to have puppies any day now and her owners work full time. Soooooo, Karen is going to be the nanny. Val is staying here for a couple months. I wanted her to feel welcome so I gave her some of my biscuits from my secret stash.
Today she has to go for an ultrasound to make sure the babies are doing alright. A lot to this having babies thing.
Well guys, I have to go. I said I would ride along again today. I will catch up with everyone later. Oh, Ruby was off a day. Karen's birthday is Friday, not Thursday. And She got a box in the mail from Ruby and her family for her big day but she didn't open it yet.
    Have a great day everyone.
    Love to all
    Maddox
PS -moss is pretty in a way.

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, How nice that Ryan asked you two marvelous girls to find some moss for him to use to add to plants in pots! He always has great ideas and so do you sweethearts and you are so brilliant and so much fun to see in these photos with lovely jackets that Martha provides at PetSmart! That moss sure does look beautiful and we have lots of of it all over our yards! Sure hope GK is doing well and please give him a hug again! How does it feel having that little bit of snow already! Bet it's very cold there and it's still great to see the farm in all places! Mom absolutely enjoyed another great blog from Martha today and she spends lots of time seeing it over and over again! We love your blogs, too! Mom and I have been very busy getting her logs ready to burn in our wood stove every day and we need to go back and read all of our buddies great comments! Have a great day all of you! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
SNOW, your first of the season; you two are so lucky. All the snow I have to look at is in the pictures of when we went to Alaska. Now that was some snow up there even in the springtime. It was down to the freezing mark this morning and the cat stayed outside last night. He has a nice warm box to sleep in and doesn’t get cold. It will be into the 20’s tonight soooo, he’ll be inside for the night. He just hates that and puts up a fuss about it. I tell him to just knock it off and go to sleep. That used to work but now that he is grown, that doesn’t seem to make him stop. He is just going to have to put on his big cat pants and get over it.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • :-) Moss detectives F&S you did a good job! I know I've mentioned this before, our Garden is a Moss garden because we have so many trees and the grass just won't grow...Kitty loves walking on it, it's like a soft carpet.
I was disappointed that we didn't get to see what Ryan did with the Moss...guess that'll be a DW upcoming story ;-)
Maddox what an odd time of year to have puppies, is this for the showing year purpose?
James Dean muahhh prurrr! Black mama how are you? And all my Gato (Spanish for cat) friends here?
Ruby your mom has such a big heart!
    Hugs to all
    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Good Hump Day Morning Francesca, Sharkey, GK and Glue Sqaud!
Well, of course Ryan would send you to sniff out moss. The great Bedford Babes Detective Agency! We have moss growing in between the sidewalk on the north side of our house. Dad always wants to dig it out and Mom tells him to stop. She says if it's good enough for Martha, it's good enough to stay! And by the way, you two rock those orange coats.
Well Maddox we didn't know you were a baby doctor! Guess we could call you a "Mid-Chow", right? hahahaha
    Keep us informed!
We woke up Tuesday morning to 3/4 of an inch of that great white stuff known as SNOW!!!!! Dad and Max were grumping about it. Of course, most of it was melted by noon. Bummer.
That's about it for this morning. The sun is shining so we are heading for the patio.
    Over and out!
    Pugs and kisses
    Brutus and Max

  • Good morning ladies,
Looking for moss, hmmm. It looks fuzzy. Does it tickle your noses? I think I know where there is some hiding at my house. Mimi loves moss. She says that she learned how to use it watching Martha's show a long time ago.
    Have a great day everybody.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hi Francesca Baby, hi everyone!! We are reading, just not finding time to write. Last week Mom worked on an opera, she was 'in charge' of the tenor. He was very nice but Mom was gone hours and hours again and so was Dad 'cuz he was working on the opera too. I am not quite sure what the difference is between opera and the other stuff Mom does except she doesn't earn as much kibble and they sing in other languages for no reason I can figure out.
We got snow on Monday-- Roxy was delirious with happiness, Millie and I were more 'meh'. If I never saw snow again I would be just fine.
    A bientot!

  • Hi everybody, Mr Mayer here...how we all doin? Don't know what got into mom this morning, but she was up almost before daylight and had us outside before 8am. I saw geese for the 1st time today. I thought there was something falling out of the sky by all the racket they were making. It scared me so bad I almost climbed right up mom's leg! And the evil twins, aka Chloe & Sophie, aka The Chiweenies, thought it was really funny to point and laugh at me. That's ok, they both seem to forget I KNOW where Sophies toy is hidden and I KNOW where Chloe stashes her stuff....lets see who's laughing when I come trotting out of the bedroom with their stuff!! I must go make plans...hope everyone has a great hump day..uh oh, that means the camel commercial will be on today...mom, go turn on the tv..I don't want to miss it!
    The Incredible Mr. Mayer

  • ..moss is cool stuff..James makes topiary animals using moss..he is the talented one of the family..love your puffer coats..Lucinda got me a Martha pink one..I wear it when I am feeling my feminine side..actually it was the only color they had..does anyone else find that the sizes are really small?..my orange med. hunting vest fits fine..but the martha med. is a bit snug..Lucinda says she can add some more velco to the underbelly strap..wow..Maddox a pg. house guest..that will keep everyone on their paws!...I sat outside on my long leash today and observed a bunch of raccoons and feral kitties..and guess what I did not try to attack either one..I am improving!..being a rescue doggie..I have a dark side ..but I try to be good all the time..I even let Lucinda kiss me on top of the head and touch my feet which, the pound said I was really aggressive about...we have a game called tickle toe.. that woman is goofy...time for a nap..over and out, Chewy

  • Good job finding the moss, you two. And I love your little red fall jackets.
