Cutting Back The Shade Garden

Posted by F&S

Well, a cold front blew through the other day and it really feels like winter now!  We Frenchies donned our warm winter coats before venturing outdoors to see how the guys were progressing with all of their chores.  We found Fernando and Wilmer working away in the shade garden.

Fernando, it's really cold outside and I see that you're bundled up more than I am! Sharkey and I came out to see what you guys are doing around the farm today.

Francesca, it looks like the shade garden is being cleaned up and just in time for Thanksgiving.

You're right, Sharkey. Martha's Thanksgiving guests will be walking past this garden and it's good to see it being trimmed up of dead growth.

These dried leaves were once bushy hosta plants. Like many perennials, they die back to the ground for the winter.

Wilmer, you must have been pruning quite a bit because I see you're using a sharpening stone on your Fiskar pruners. Like knives in the kitchen, it's important to keep your secateur sharp and ready.

Fernando, now that the ground is frozen, I suppose it's OK for this garden to be walked upon. Normally, we're told to stay out of the garden beds so as not to damage the plants.

Fernando, how do you go about cutting these dried leaves back?

Oh, I see. You use your pruners and cut at ground level.

  • Good Morning F & S

It looks like Fernando is about to drop you he needs to be careful with that body. Everyone is all dressed for the cold now we have to get ready for the nor'easter coming up the coast which will make travel hell for lots of people. Lots of rain and snow - glad I don't have to go anywhere.

So is everyone ready for Turkey Day? Just think Hump Day then Turkey Day and we can call Friday Bloated Day because we all ate too much. Oh my lots of fun days coming up :)

Well my time is cut short mom is leaving for work.

    Have a good one :)

    Zoe

  • Good morning,
That is funny Zoe. Hump Day, Turkey Day and then Bloat Day. It looks very cold on the farm. Everyone is bundled up, animals and humans alike.
I hate to post and run but that is what I must do. I am going with Karen to take care of the boarder dogs. It is sleeting here and it is very slippery so I am going along with her in case she falls she will stay warm with all my thick fur. I will jump on her until the tow truck comes to get her up. Hehehehehe. I know, that wasn't nice. My bad. She is laughing though so it is alright. Be careful if you live in the path of the winter storm today and tomorrow
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
Yep, you look pretty frozen there. The guys love taking a break and giving you loves I bet. The path will be sparkling for the guests on Thanksgiving. Haven't seen much of your inside decor. Hope we will get to this year. Keep up the good work all.

I am loving the smells from the kitchen for the holidays. I must close early and get back to snoozeland, but had to get Mom off to her Mammosomething. Have a GEM of a day all. I like that Zoe,Friday Bloated Day---for sure.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, OMG! It looks so cold outside and thank God you girls have such nice, warm coats to wear checking out what Fernando and Wilmer are doing to clear that area to get ready for Thanksgiving! They look great in there warm clothing, also! Mom loved seeing Ryan and his buddies planting those beautiful cycad pups on Martha's blog today! Did you get to see that, also?! We love seeing all that you check out for us at Martha's beautiful Bedford farm! Hope you stay warm and have fun and please hug GK for me again! Nice to hear from Zoe, Maddox, and Ruby so far this morning and can't wait to hear from all the rest of you great buddies again! It's warmed up a little in our area and Mom and I are still working very hard getting wood ready to burn in our fire place! We both get very tired, but love to get the temperature up to the 70s inside! Have a great day everyone! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Good morning ladies,
Boy, do I like your coats! They are really sharp. I see a belly, too! It's going to be real cold here tomorrow. The storm ran south of us, that made Papa and everybody else at the shop happy. Mimi is wishing for some snow, but the weatherman says "not yet"!
No bloated Friday at our house. No turkey either, the fam is going to in-laws and we will just have a quiet day and start putting up Christmas decorations. Maybe Mimi will find a half a turkey breast at the IGA and roast that up with some stuffing.
To all my friends out East, keep on your collective feet and not on your bums.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Good morning Francesca, Sharkey, Fernando, Wilmer and all the Glue Squad!
Looks like you two have everything under control at the farm. Looks cold too.
    Yep, love the Bloated Day!
Mom just got back from the grocery store, she said it's a mad house already. Don't know why everyone there was mad, though....hmmmmm. But there's lots of bags for Max to sniff. Does anyone else do that? Maxie puts half his body in the bags and sniffs away!

We had a little snow early this morning, but most of it is gone already. I, Brutus, love been out there this morning, Maxie stayed in bed with Dad.
We have to go. Mom has a list and she made one for Dad. Oh,oh. Time to hide!
OK...this computer is acting up and I'm getting mad, must be off.
    Pugs and kisses
    Brutus and Max

  • Hi Y'all,
Mis needs to get to work cleaningvup our yard. She probably needs your help Francesca and Sharkey. Of course Fernando and Wilmer would be a big help too.
Not much happening here today. It keeps getting darker but the rain is just to the west of us. It's chilly but not as bad as yesterday, but that's coming back tomorrow. They call it a rollercoaster!
We have to avoid Bloat Day on Friday, so we eat lightly on Turkey Day! Can't work well with a Turkey Day hangover. Mis will first eat with her cousins around noon. Then it's off to her brother- in- laws family around 5. It all sounds great but we don't get any of it. Bummer!!!!
Back to snoozing for us! It's a perfect day for it!

  • Hello Francesca, Sharkey and GS buddies,
Great to see outdoor activities continuing despite our Eastern cold front. Franny, you are brave to be held up in the air like that. Love those winter jackets too.
Zoe, too funny, Bloated day Friday. Someone's attorney said the Friday after thanksgiving "everyone is either too bloated or too drunk to work" so she gives her staff the day off!
We are bracing for the upcoming weather, Mom said only four commutes to go before the holiday.
Kitty, hope you have some indoor warm plans for the holiday, Black Mama cat too.
Stay safe and warm everybody and have a wonderful Holiday! purrrrrs and woofs,
    Jimmy Dean and snoozing Abby

  • Good morning Glue Squad, how is everyone doing? It's been pretty hectic at our house for the last couple of days. Mom has practically lived in the kitchen. People coming to our house to pick up all kinds of goodies from Mom. Pies, cakes and breads going out the door almost as fast as mom can make 'em. We keep waiting for someone to drop a crumb or two, but so far nothing and we say not fair! In a little while our favorite little human will be here and we can't wait for her to get here so we can go out and play in the yard and maybe go for a little walk.
How are the baby boys doing Maddox? Bet they have everyone on their toes. When do we get to see a photo or two? Ruby are you being a good girl and staying home? Hey, do I hear a car? Yippee, Jaime Grace is here....gotta go for now guys. Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving with lots of good things to nibble on....
    Love you all

  • :-) oh my you poor dears being out in that cold! As well as for the workers, they seem very dedicated to their jobs...
It's freeking cold here and I'm miserable, then this morning again I took a tumble and hurt my r. Ankle again...I fainted twice as hubby was trying to get me to the bedroom...what the heck???? This IS a reminder that indeed I'm getting old. Told hubby maybe I should get one of those gadgets on TV - help I've fallen and can't get up!! ;-) NOT!
I have to go to yesterday's DW BLOG FORGOT IT WAS Monday.
    Stay warm everyone!
Kitty is not wanting to go outside, she sleeps all day and then at sunset she goes out for several hours...odd because it's colder during that time...but then what do I know, I'm only a human!
