A Towering Pile Of Logs!

Posted by F&S

We Frenchies have been hearing chainsaws in the woods for quite some time and we were wondering what was going on.  There's a pile of logs at the compost yard, so we took a little drive there to check things out.

Franny, these logs are all of the trees that were blown over in last year's Hurricane Sandy.

The farm crew has been busy dragging these broken trees out of the woods and piling them up here for a giant machine called a tub grinder, which will turn them into fine wood chips for the compost piles.

Sharkey, I smell varmints! I'm sure this pile is home to lots of animals. They will have to relocate when the tub grinder starts working.

They are very straight and solid.

Don't you love the smell of freshly cut lumber?

Yes, Franny, freshly cut wood smells earthy and sweet at the same time.

It's also interesting to note that every kind of tree has its own aroma and some people can identify a tree just by smelling it.

Sharkey, dogs have much better noses than people. Let's go and get sniffing!

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
Holy Moly Batman, or rather Franny and Sharkey is right. You could have an entire new house built with all that lumber. Isn't Mama Martha smart to recycle and use in all parts of the farm? Thank you again for showing me this aspect of the farm. I learn more and more every day from you girls.

News alert....Maddox asked I let you all know he will not be posting today as he is riding shotgun with Karen and they are leaving at some unGodly hour. Tomorrow he will catch you up on things.

As for me, I am nervous for my first mountain trip, but I am saying I think I can, I think I can. Mom says once I get there it will be fun. So until Friday, everyone have a GEM of a week.

    Love and licks,
    Ruby

P.S. Happy Birthday on Thursday to Karen, Maddox's Mom, since I will be in the mountains still. I will yodel for you in the mountains Karen. Hugs to you for being the greatest!!!!!

  • Good Tuesday morning Francesca, Sharkey, GK and Glue Squad! Has anyone noticed the date??? 11-12-13!!!!
We are sooo sorry we missed the blog Monday. Of course, we can't get on the computer and website without help and no one would help! Humans!
So we are going to back up for a minute.
Thank you to all the veterans! Without you and your commitment we would not have our freedom and everything we just take for granted.
We've never seen any evergreen trees lose their needles. Very interesting. And if we had trees like that our Dad would probably blow a gasket. It's bad enough having leaves fall.
Now on to today. Holey Moley is right! Lots and lots of logs.
Ruby, congrats on the Broncos win Sunday and we are hoping that Peyton Mannings' ankle is OK. And have fun on your trip! We can't wait to hear about your adventures.
Congrats to Riley Boy on your graduation! Did you have a party? Commencement? Cap and Gown?
And the best thing happening in our small patch of the world.....IT. IS. SNOWING!!!!!!!! Yippee!!!
Mom is so excited and Dad is bummed.
Now, according to Dad since the first measureable snow is falling on the 12th of the month we will have 12 more snows this winter. I, Brutus, cannot wait. I love the snow like Mom. Max here....I'm in Dad's camp. Snow...BahHumbug.
    Ok, we've said enough today.
    Pugs and kisses
    Brutus and Max

  • Good Morning F & S

WOW that is a big pile of trees! Franny I bet you are right lots of critters living in that pile. I would sit on top of a log and wait for them to leave their home and WHAM jump right on top and attack. Now that's what I call fun ;)

First snow of the season here this morning and it sure does look pretty. Dad is not going to be happy when he wakes he hates the snow. Mom likes the snow but it's not good for business. Being in the title insurance business people don't go and look at houses in nasty weather.

Ruby you have fun on your trip to the mountains and stay close to mom. Maddox can't wait to hear about your road trip.

I think I'll go back to bed and catch a few more zzzzzs.......

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, OMG! You sweet girls must have had a wonderful time checking on all of those logs that had fallen down in last year's Hurricane Sandy! Love your outfits today, also! How great that all of that wood will be great for lumber and fine wood chips for the compost pile! Martha's crew did a great job collecting all of that wood and Dominic is doing a great job making beautiful lumber! Can't wait to see what will be made with the lumber! Mom has a bunch of logs that she uses in our wood stove and it makes it very warm in our house! Please hug GK again for me and have a great day! Will check on all of our buddies comments in a little while! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Now that’s what I would call a stack of trees all piled up. I told my Daddy that some people could tell the kind of tree just by smelling it. Soooo, he tried it and said that every tree smelled the same to him. Said they smelled like Kirby. I told him he better smell a little bit higher up on the tree and see how that worked out. Hehehehe Not much going on around here today. We are getting ready for the “cold” weather which is coming our way. Some say cold I say cool. I mean the weather is cool; I like cold weather. Bring it on, Kirby is ready.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Good morning ladies,
I'm so glad you were careful and didn't fall down from the logs! The storm was awful, but now you have lots of firewood and lumber for projects around the farm.
We had our first snow last night, too! What's with the Dads being bummed out by the snow? Mimi does all the shoveling! I guess it's because they have to face the "honey-do" list. Mimi loves four seasons. She says it keeps life interesting. We like to build a big fire in the fireplace to warm up the family room before Papa gets home for work.
Ruby, have a great time in the mountains and like Zoe, I can hardly wait til tomorrow to hear about Maddox and Karens' trip.
Off to my morning nap. Happy 11/12/13!
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • :-) Oh my goodness, it looks like a forestry industry there...and you girls so bravely standing on those huge logs...even on the saw, yikes! Love your Bavarian looking sweaters ;-) such brave girls.
Riley congratulations on your Graduation, well done! Ruby you will have a great time in the mountains...be good and don't run off...enjoy your time with your loving human parents.
Sunshine here today after a miserable cold, wet, snowy day for our ceremonies.
Off to finish my ornament for our state Capital!

    Have a pleasant day everyone!
    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Hello Sharkey, Brave Francesca, traveler Maddox and all my glue squad friends,
Sorry we missed yesterday, its been more difficult getting on the computer lately. What great logs and trees! Mom loves the smell of fresh cut wood. My grand pa and great grand pa worked in a wood pattern shop so Mom grew up around sawed wood. Different kinds really smell good, Mom loves pine and cedar the best. I love freshly cut wood too. Lots of fun projects to design and construct. Mom has been busy making wood and metal projects in her metalshop. I help her design and measure pieces.
Congratulations Riley on your graduation!! Zoe, keep warm inside today and just dream about tp projects for the holidays. Ruby, hope you and Mama Lynn have a wonderful trip to the mountains. Abby is looking for her fleece jacket. I have a wonderful persian hair coat. Puurrrs to all, especially Kitty!!
    James Dean the cat boy

  • ..wow..busy girls..martha has a fortune in cut lumber there and firewood and wood chips...it is cold and wet here today...not sure if I know what snow is..Lucinda says she is getting too old to deal with it and hopes it just rains this winter..must don my orange vest and go for a walk about..later, love, Chewy

  • Gee, looks like Paul Bunyan would be of service with all those trees! :)

What will the cut lumber be used for? Building something special perhaps?

It's downright chilly here in NH! The arctic air has arrived. I feel ol' man Winter isn't too far off. Grrr!

    Happy Tuesday..
    gail

  • Pomp and Circumstance to you Riley. Ruby Gem girl the mountains await ye have a great time. Kirby Bear I have the perfect freezing weather for you here in Chicago. You'd just love it, it's only 35 degrees out! Brrrr Karen and Maddox riding shotgun sounds like the start of some crazy adventure.

I hope everyone has a fun day today!

  • Hello all you GS buddies:
What a lot of wood! Looks like you could build a new farm with that much wood. However, I'm sure it will be put to good use. Today was beautiful and sunny, but cold. Last night on our walks we saw cars that were covered in sleet. It was a cold and blustery evening, but that didn't bother us one bit. All of us have big hairy white feet, no boots for us Miss Ruby girl. Martha goes out of her way to find water to walk in, even if it is very cold and half frozen, she is a crazy girl. Our cats were not so pleased with the weather, our oldest Max spent the evening curled up on Mom's bed. Tomorrow we get a new gas stove for the family room, we found out that the one in the house was recalled by Health Canada because it tended to blow up when ignited! Good thing ours didn't want to light and Mom found out before Dad start fiddling around with the gas and flames .... Yikes! could have been a disaster. Well that's all for now, we are waiting for Mom to get home from her dentist appointment, her least favorite place. Love and Beardie bounces, Martha, Lucy and Riley boy.
