What's Still Growing In The Vegetable Garden

Posted by F&S

Dressed in some of our new Martha Stewart Pets attire from PetSmart, we Frenchies decided to wander down to the vegetable garden to see how things fared after getting zapped by frost.  We were happy to see that there were still some vegetables to pick.

Francesca, it's getting quite cold and we've even had frosty nights. I'd like to go to the vegetable garden and see what's left to pick.

This beautiful curly-leafed kale still looks good. Kale is a leafy green vegetable that belongs to the Brassica family, a group of vegetables including cabbage, collards, and Brussels sprouts, which are all very good for you.

Sharkey, I'll just munch on some of this Romaine lettuce. It's crunchy and tastes sweet.

Franny, these leeks are lovely. Leeks are related to garlic, onions, shallots, and scallions, but have a more delicate and sweeter flavor.

And look at this root vegetable called celeriac! It smells just like celery, which it is related to.

Celeriac has a distinctive taste that can be described as a cross between strong celery and parsley with a nutty twist. It has the texture of potatoes and is delicious pureed or added to vegetable soups. YUM!!!

Franny, I don't think we want to be messing with these hot chili peppers. Peppers have been spicing up life for thousands of years.

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
Your garden looks a lot more bountiful than our garden does right now. All we have is some of that kale stuff. I hate it. I know it is good for you. Sharkey, you look marvelous, especially in the #6 tongue photo. That is a really cool one. I bet Mama Martha is planning lots of neat things to do with all these remaining veggies for the Thanksgiving Day feast. Do you know Mom said since I arrived the day before Thanksgiving last year, and stole half the stuffing, that I get my very own dish, minus any onions, of my very own. This is going to be a tradition. It is another busy day ahead, so I best get a bit of shut eye. No snow yet, just rainy stuff.
Have a GEM of a day all.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • ..once again you two are helpers!..no veggies her..,what ever we had the critters have munched down..it is late and I just had a snack so I better hit the hay..later, Chewy

  • Geez, I had a whole thing typed out where I mentioned everyone and I was almost done when it all disappeared. What the heck.
Now I have to start over.
Missy Chow, I am zapping you with good behavior vibes. If your behavior does not improve, then we will figure something else out. Ok? ok! Rebel, we keep waking Karen up too lots of times. She just takes a nap in the afternoon if we get her too tired. Hehehehehehehe. Martha, Lucy, Riley, did you come up with the 3rd outfit for Halloween? James Dean, what are you reading about Halloween? Do you read to Abby? Kirby, the drops might be cold but at least they don't burn. Dudley, still having technical problems? Baby Favor, it is nice that Uncle Dick visits with you. Brutus and Max, hair cut for Max, none for Brutus? Zoe, I am glad your tummy ache is better and that you and your parents had good times over the weekend even though you were apart. Ruby, are you all partied out from the weekend? Chloe you should make paper mâché leg casts for Mr. Mayer so when Chloe jumps out to bite his legs she will get a nasty glue taste in her mouth. Hehehehehehehe. Kitty, what is new with you? Chewy and Black Mamna, are you getting along better? Well, I am running late now because of losing all that stuff I had written down. I hope I didn't forget anyone. I have to help Karen to let everyone out and make breakfast.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good morning everyone,
I told Maddox that I wanted to say something to everyone today and that is why he didn't mention anything to you. I wanted to thank all of you regarding our very successful weekend at the dog show. To retire a trophy that was not won in 20 years is a dream come true. That just shows how hard it is to achieve that goal. I really wanted to win that one for my girl Journey, who passed away in 2010. She won at that show in 2003 when she was young. She then went back to that show when she was 10 years old and won it again as a Veteran. She was a remarkable chow. I learned so much from her. She was such a great representative for the breed. Her name is engraved on that trophy twice and now Wu Tang , who resembles Journry won for me for the third win and that made the trophy mine. After Journey won the first time and after she had a little girl of her own, I took that puppy to Virginia and stood her on the trophy. Her name was Echo. I named her that because an echo is a repeat of something and I wanted Echo to do in the ring what her mother had done. When I stood Echo on that trophy she put her little foot right on her mom's name plate. There were a lot of names of previous winners on it but she put it right down on her mamna's name. I took a picture which is why I went there with her in the first place and I always thought that if Echo would ever win at that show I would use that picture in an ad for Chow Life magazine. I had it all planned out. I would put that picture aside of the picture of her winning the same show that Journry did. But, unfortunately, Echo was one of my chows that perished in the fire/explosion. When Journry won against the age of 10 my dream came alive again. That was the last time Journey was in a show ring. Wu Tang showed the best she has ever shown. It was like Journey was guiding her. It was such a thrilling feeling and such a great honor to be awarded that trophy for my Journey. Thank you all for being so supportive. As a breeder my goal was and is to produce good tempered good quality chows. I have approximately 7 or 8 chows that are licensed therapy dogs that specialize in different areas. There are some who do therapy work in nursing homes, some that do therapy work in hospitals, one that visits a children's hospital that treats kids with cancer and two that strictly work with wounded military people that come back to the States after being injured. I have some that are wonderful companions to people and kids and some that like to show. I am proud of all of them and I love them with all ny heart. Sorry this is long but I guess you can tell I have devoted over 15 years of my life to these dogs and I don't regret it at all. You are a great group and I cherish each of you like you were mine as well. THANK YOU GLUE SQUAD. THANK YOU
    Love Always,
    Karen

  • Good Morning F & S

The garden is winding down soon the snow will cover everything :( Mom has been buying a lot of that celery root looks like a rotten ball if you ask me. I heard her telling dad that they have to start eating more veggies her pants are getting snug. I guess so when you are running around NYC eating up a storm. She just better stay home with old Zoe here and eat lettuce.

So Maddox did your mom have a bit too much caffeine this morning - she wrote a book!!! Only kidding I love Karen and I'm so happy she retired a trophy. Ask her if she wants to show me I think I'm trophy material ;) Oh and the little snack she holds in her hand when you are in the ring - just pack cheese curls.

Mom was up and out early this morning full day of meetings. I'll be surpervising the carpet installation today with Dad. Tomorrow the new furniture comes I can't wait to test it out.

Well I have to go wake dad and get him moving. Have a great day!!

    Zoe

  • This special note is for Karen and Maddox. I am so very proud to know you and have you as a friend in my life. I am very lucky. I know Karen, that Journey had a PARTY going on up at the Rainbow Bridge in celebration of Wu Tang and her Mama Karen. I am partying all week in your honor. It is a big job,but someone has to do it.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, Thank you so much you two beautiful girls for taking us out into you vegetable garden wearing your darling new outfits from PetSmart! You look so cute and happy to find vegetables that didn't get frozen in that cold night! Our lovely tomatoes and green beans were ruined last month when we had a horrible storm with too much rain and wind. They were flooded. How great that you found so many great vegetables to pick for Martha! It's a bit cold here this morning at about 39 degrees, but the sun is supposed to be out all day! Hope you have fun and hug GK and Martha for me!! Sweet Ruby, you sure sound happy no matter what you do with your Mom and Dad and they sure take great care of you! Hi Chewy, please hug Black Mama for me if you can! Did your fog go away like ours did yesterday? Maddox, so sorry you had technical problems with your computer! Thank God ours works fine and my Uncle Tim fixed Moms phone and it works just fine now! Karen Tracy, you are a very special Chow Chow person and I love reading about all of your great Chows, as well as Paw Paw and GK who belong to wonderful Martha and some of our Glue Squad Chows! Zoe, bet you will enjoy seeing the new carpets and furniture very soon! Hope the rest of you great buddies are having fun and will check back later! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Not much going on around here today so I slept in this morning. Now after reading all the news I think I will have my late morning nap. I looked up Maddox and my name on the Scoville chart and found that we were listed as “hot.” hehehehehe It has started to warm up again and it’s only into the lower 50’s at night again. Now I do love those upper 30’s but, alas they are gone for a while. Maybe next month things will change a little. Are you two ready for the ghost and goblins? I’ll bet GK is ready.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello F&S and all the GS buddies:
We also don't have much left in our garden, we don't have room for veggies, and since its a new house Mom only started planting this year. She has put a lot of bulbs in, Miz Lu loves to help with that (you gotta watch that girlie, she loves to hide the bulbs when Mom isn't looking).
Karen, we salute you and your kennel, it sounds like a very classy organization and we are proud to be in the same group of buddies as you are. Big hugs to all of your dogs and their many achievements.
We have decided that Miz Lu shall be Tinkerbelle - Martha is a ballerina, Miz Lu is Tinkerbelle and Riley boy is a pumpkin! We will laugh ourselves silly at each other's costumes, but greet the kids in style! Today is another lovely sunny day, although rain is coming (again). Got frost last night so Mom will have to clean up the rest of the garden this weekend, soon it will be time to start thinking about Xmas - we love Xmas and snow, especially snow. Queen Chloe chiweenie, I like your style. This is Miz Lu here, and I tell you, that Riley boy is so annoying sometimes, like I tell you, he's fixed, I'm fixed and still he's bugging me ALL THE TIME, checking me out 15 ways to Sunday. When will that boy get it through his head I'm not interested! When it gets too bad, I just take a running leap at him, growl, and nip him wherever I can. He yips and takes off, but you know sooner or later he'll be back. What a one track mind, what a boy! I can't mop the floor with him (he's bigger than me) but I'd sure like to!
Well, gotta go and help Dad with the last of the pool maintenance (we are closing tomorrow). Enjoy the sunshine for those of you guys that have it.
Love and Beardie bounces, Martha, Miz Lu and Riley boy.

  • Good morning Francesca, Sharkey and the Glue Squad.
The only edible stuff we have in our yard is a tub of herbs. The basil bite the dust (or frost) last week. Now we have only parsley and chives. Which, of course, we do not eat. I, Brutus, eat meat. And dry dog food and treats. Well, a couple cookies here and there. Max, here. I'll try darn near anything that is handed to me or drops on the floor!
Maddox, Brutus went to the groomers last week, not me, Max. I'm the Pug,if I had a hair cut I would look like a rat all over...a well fed rat but none the less.
Karen, once again, congratulations and you deserve to brag. When we read your post to Mom, she got all teary-eyed.
We feel very blessed not only to live with our Mom and Dad, but also to be welcomed into this great club...the Glue Squad.
We are getting off here now because a) it's beautiful outside and Dad is blowing leaves and the weather is suppose to turn nasty tonight through the rest of the week and b) this post is getting way too mushy.
    Pugs and [Bernese] kisses!
Brutus and Max (I'm the hairy one now! hahahhaha)

  • Ladies you are looking so sharp in your Fall wear. Been awfully busy with deadlines lately so I have only been lurking and running.

Congrats to Karen and your beautiful Chows. You deserve all of the accolades you receive. I hope everyone has a beautiful day.

  • :-) F & S you girls look so spiffy... my goodness look at all the veggies still growing! I love Kale and have something here my daughter gave me, "oven roasted kale with garlic" it's good but don't eat it if you are going to socialize you will never get all that Kale out of your teeth no matter how much you brush, and then there is the garlic!
Maddox I gave up mentioning everyone, but do read the comments...mommie Karen has a lot to be proud of, it's her Love and Passion.

Have a good Tuesday ( this is how I remember what day it is, by mentioning it ;-)

    Kitty is out and about!
Peace and all that good stuff :-)
    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Chewy here again and this time black Mama and the tribe are helping me...we all want to say what a special lady Karen Tracy is..Karen you rock!..Cora-Belle told Black Mama all about how special Karen is and Black Mama told me...wow..just think I was homeless doggie just a mere 6 weeks ago and now I have such great friends! love, Chewy

  • Delightful autumn apparel girly girls! :)

I've never tried Kale, but I do enjoy Romaine!

I'll fess up, I'm not much of a fruit and veggie gal.

Unless it's dunked in chocolate! :)

It's certainly chilly here in NH today! :)

    Brrr-

  • Hi Y'all,
Oh my! You girls sure have been busy around the farm. Yes, harvest time is a busy one. And those coats are wonderful. Mis and her sister, Kim went by Petsmart the other day for some dog food and had to check those coats out. Very well made and stylish! Mis also checked out the beautiful parakeets. She comes home envisioning a house of harmony. NOT!!! Those little birds would be scared out of their feathers from day ONE! I would likely leave them be but Zeke and Izzy love a good bird chase.
I've digressed. So how has the pumpkin harvest gone. Hoping to see some of the unusual varieties that Martha grows. Our growing season ended abruptly Saturday morning. We had a freeze with the temps falling to 27 in some areas toward Virginia. We hadn't even had a frost yet. Mis and Kim spent most of Friday re-potting and placing their pet plants in a warm greenhouse. George would not have made a good greenhouse dog! Just saying!
Maddox, let Karen know that she is a most wonderful person. I'm sure that you and the others know that, but it's nice to hear it. And congratulations for retiring that trophy! A wonderful story and well deserved! It's great that so many of your dogs have worked their way into such important rolls. What a great legacy! Thank You!
Miz Lu, Izzy feels your pain! I, Dixie used to be the one who couldn't leave her alone, but George! George is 5 times worse! She won't even come inside during the day if George is in. He just can't leave her be! And yes, we too have all been Fixed so to speak. Mis says that Izzy is just too sexy for the boys.
Hoping everyone has a Doggy Good Day!
    Dixie Boy

  • Hi Everybody!
I want everyone to know what a wonderfully alert, brave brother Sophie and I have in Mr. Mayer.
There was a fire in our neighborhood late last night. Mom was up watching the late news, but had turned on the electric blanket on so our bed would be warm and snuggy before we all piled in. Being the spoiled little creatures we are, the minute we heard the click of the blanket controll all 3 of us raced down the hall and got up on the bed. A few minutes later Mayer jumped up, made this strange noise and went tearing down the hall to mom. She opened the front door just as the fire blew the windows out of the neighbors house. He would not stop dancing around and barking till mom rounded us all up and put us in the car incase we had to make a quick escape. Glad she keeps blankets in the car. He is our Hero of the week and I've had a serious talk with Sophie about how she treats him and how she really needs to be a lot nicer to him! The leg grabbing has to stop! Is that the mail lady I hear? Better go check...
Hope everyone is having a great day!
    Chloe, the Queen Chiweenie

  • Francesa & Sharkey, thanks for sharing about the types of vegetables left in the garden now. I loved your sweet outfits too.
