We Love Autumn Leaves!

Posted by Francesca

Autumn is a busy time at the farm.  There are so many jobs that need to get done before freezing temperatures arrive.  One big one is leaf removal from lawns and gardens and it really helps to keep on top of this task.  It also helps to have the right equipment, which speeds up the process, allowing precious time to get other projects done..

I thought I heard the crew blowing and gathering leaves. I wonder where they disappeared to?

Here they are, Francesca! It looks like there may be a problem with the leaf vacuum. The guys are working on the machine at the equipment barn.

Chhewang, what seems to be the problem?

Oh, Chhewang, you had a big clog in the vacuum tube. No wonder the machine stopped.

All this debris must have been stuck in the tube.

Franny, it looks like it's all clear now.

Fernando, Franny and I are going to follow this truck in the Kawasaki to where the guys are sucking up leaves. We love watching this job.

Errr - excuse me, Fernando, but this is a strange position to be in.

All right, Chhewang! I see we're back in business. Give the cord a good pull and let the engine roar!

Sharkey, don't you just love the smell of autumn leaves? There's nothing like the aroma of crisp, fallen leaves.

So this leaf vacuum really comes in handy when clearing leaves. First the leaves are gathered into a big pile.

Then they're raked into the big sucking tube of the vacuum.

The vacuumed leaves shoot into the back of the dump truck and then they're carted off to the compost pile, where they'll decompose into rich mulch. It really pays to have the right equipment.

  • Good Morning F & S

I was waiting for one of you to get sucked up with the leaves - better stay clear :) Dad was just saying to mom she needs to get the blower out and clear the very back of the yard. That is where we do our pooping and it's very hard to find those gems when you are pooper scooping with the leaves on the ground. That is a daily job around here and when Dad steps in one - oh boy all kinds of words come out of his mouth :) I better remind mom to do that after work today.

Yesterday we never got to clean out the office instead mom was furniture shoping. Now I see we have someone coming to measure for rugs next week. Sounds like a decorating project is in my future for our family room. I thought we were done with construction for a while - here we go again :(

  • Good morning ladies,
We have lots of leaves, too. It's going to rain today, what a mess. At least Papa got the gutters cleaned out. Mimi is leaving for California tomorrow morning, so I'll be helping Papa rake up all the leaves. Most of ours are little birch leaves. The squirrels have been after the acorns in the neighbors oak tree, they've been breaking off little branches, too. At first, Mimi thought it was great, she gathered them up and made a leaf thingy-ding to tie to the lamppost with Halloween ribbon. Mimi thought it was nice, Papa laughed at her. I think it looks nice.
Well, since Mimi will be gone, this is the last day I'll be posting. Mimi is visiting an elderly friend that doesn't have internet. So, I have to wish my good buddy Kirby Bear a very happy birthday.
Til next week, be good everybody...
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, How fun to see you 2 sweet girls outside helping Chhewang and Fernando clearing the lawns and gardens there at Martha's beautiful Bedford farm! How fun to see all of that equipment they used and the big dump truck used to put those leaves in the compost piles! You girls sure did have fun and how nice that you helped clear out the plugged up vacuum tube! My Mom clears out our lawn every day to get rid of leaves, weeds, and my poop and I help her as much as I can! Please hug GK for me and I hope you have another great day! Zoe, sounds like new furniture in your family room would be great and we probably need some, too! Hope to hear from the rest of you buddies real soon! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Good Morning F&S and all the Glue Squad campers!
Just call us turkey trotters cause we had a wonderful turkey dinner this weekend and then went for a walk (to aid in the digestion of said turkey). It was a very good long weekend, Mom was home for three days. It sounds like you girls have a great system for getting the leaves all picked up. We have an enormous old Norway maple out front and back and the leaves are coming down like crazy. Mom has raked and mowed and mulched and still they keep coming down! We had to put a net over the fishpond cause all the leaves were falling into the pond.
Its a beautiful day out today, nice and cool and crisp - great for patio sitting!

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
Well I am back in action today on the computer. At least while Dad is having coffee, and not here interfering with my blogging. Yesterday he was revamping and working ALL day on the computer. I am excited for all our leaves to drop. The leaves sure are beautiful in color back East. We have so many pine trees, but the color we have is pretty. You girls be careful, you could get hidden in the leaves and whammo, you would be sucked up. The leaves will be the last actual job of my landscaping crew. It is to be a rainy/snowy week here, so probably won't get it done. Glad Brutus and Max the itching is stopped, and you are feeling better. A+ George on no demolition to furniture while Mis is gone. Chewy be careful patrolling the property with those hunters. Glad Lucinda and James have you in an orange vest. Missy hope you are taking good care of Mom while she is recovering from her cold. Abby, you and Jimmy rest during Mom's 8 day work time. KIRBY, so glad the eyes are continuing to be o.k. You are really brave taking those drops. Rebel, you and Papa have a PARTY while Mimi is in California. Dudley, any wood chopping for the stove yet. Kitty, you and Mama Delia need to relax and have "cc" time. Sonya, how is the busy bee workaholic doing these days? Zoe, I am glad you made it through Super Nephew---did you party much? Maddox, is the kennel almost done, and Karen can sleep in a real bed and not the recliner? Geez, she will have a long winter's nap for sure. I am off to patrol my kingdom, then a morning nap. Have a GEM of a day.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Good morning Francesca, Sharkey and Glue Squad!
When Dad gets out his leaf blower I run for the house! I don't do loud noises. Yesterday my human sister came to visit and for some reason she clapped. Scared the bejeerers outta me so I went upstairs. I know she didn't mean anything by it, but I fled just the same.
The weatherman is saying we will have rain this afternoon and evening but for now it's nice and cool but cloudy. I don't care as long as it's not hot and humid.
Mom and Dad are both off work today which means Maxie and I can come and go outside anytime we want. Right now I want to hop on the bed and take a little nap.
    Pleasant dreams!
Brutie (I think Max is outside with Dad)

  • :-) oh Fernando what a way to carry Franny, the look on her face prior photo is so funny!
Boy could we use that big suction hose...hubby Al has been outside raking everyday the same thing over and over...this till all the leaves are off the trees. It's raining and the wind is dropping more leaves, hubby is at the VA hospital up in Madison, so hasn't seen the mess yet.
Kitty just ran out of the woods into the house soaked to the bone as it started to rain hard.

Rebel you be good while mom Mimi is in sunny California and Zoe you make sure that you are allowed on the new furniture...oh Dudley DR I can't imagine having to rake by myself, good for your mom Jan doing this :-)

So all you DW-GS friends have a good day, no matter what kind of weather lol ;-)

  • Hi Y'all,
That's a BIG job girls! George would be in heaven. No way the workers could ever get their job done with him around! By the way, he's here right now trying to type his opinion! NO WAY!!! And we too enjoy the smell of fallen leaves. The crispness in the air makes it all the more pungent. Our leaves are mostly pecan and maple. We just let them fall and collect then mow them to return the nutrients to the ground. Mis wishes we had a vacuum for all the pine straw. We mulch with that and it's a chore for her to rake.
Ruby, Mis was just glad that the walls didn't get demolished last Friday. We shoved one chair into a floor lamp and up against a glass front bookcase. It's a bit too easy to move with the little wheels on the front legs. HAHHHAH She's still not amused!
Kirby you're back in the rain and we finally, after 7 days of clouds and drizzle have the sun back! WOOOOOHOOOOO!!!! Mis and her sister can't remember any time that it stayed entirely cloudy for so long. Last night the moon and stars were shining. Amazing how we miss those things. Best enjoy it today. It's going to cloud up again and rain by Thursday. And today is the 59th anniversary of Hurricane Hazel. Sounded like a devil of a storm that wiped out the southern coast of our state with some oceanfront towns reporting 18' storm surges! Yes, 18 FOOT walls of water! Mis said that her Dad watched from a window as huge oak trees fell around the dorm on the NCSU campus in Raleigh. They reported 90 mph wind gusts that far inland. It's still regarded as one of the worst hurricanes on record! Thankfully, I've not experienced one of these yet. Fran, was the worst Mis has experienced. Thankfully, it's been a quite year for the US this year.
Okay, enough history. Got to eat lunch and soak-up some sun!

  • Hi everyone! Hi Francesca Baby!! We are very busy at our house these days, but I did want to drop by really quickly to say hello. Francesca, I loved your pictures in EQ. Our leaves are just starting to fall, so now Mom will probably wind up with poop on her shoes, since it gets harder to find when there is a blanket of nice, crunchy leaves covering the backyard. Well, it is a rainy day here, and we are all looking out the porch door at it. Probably Mom won't be able to keep the porch door open for much longer, so I better get back to it and enjoy while I can.
    A bientot!

  • Morning all...it's a beautiful day in SW Washington!! I see lots of deck time in my future..if I didn't have to share the space with Sophie & Mayer I'd be too happy for words..they better stay out of my space is all I can say! I have to go to the Vet in the morning. While mom was brushing me she found a lump on my tail and wigged out!! The only good thing about it is I get to go for a ride in the car and Sophie and Mayer have to stay home...it looks like the neighbors cat is thinking about strolling down our driveway so I must go change it's mind...later guys
    Chloe, the Queen Cheweenie

  • ..no leaf blowers for us..we just wait for the wind to blow them away or grind them up with the lawn mower..no neighbors anywhere around us so no one can complain..the raccoons love rolling in them..it is a wildlife day..a grouse walking around the yard and a red-headed woodpecker in the apple tree..better get off the computer..Black Mama and the tribe say they are going on a trophy hunt..I'll sneak along behind them...love, Chewy

  • Send the fellas my way! I have a lot of trees, which equals tons of leaves! :)

I just love how Fernando is carrying Sharkey like a sack of tatoes! :)

    Have a Leafy Day! :)
    gail

  • :-) Oh yes Gail, you are right it's Sharkey being carried!! The funny thing is I knew that and was thinking of Franny at the same time.. Oddly I felt something was wrong sending the comment, and that's what it was...so much for proof reading ;-)

    I hate getting old :-(
