The World Of Wooly Bears

Posted by F&S

When you start seeing wooly bear caterpillars crawling on the ground, you know that autumn has arrived.  We Frenchies and GK were outside on the terrace yesterday, enjoying the sunny weather, when we spotted one inching along.

I'm told that wooly bears are the speed demons of the caterpillar world, clocking speeds of .05 miles an hour, or about a mile a day!

And Sharkey, if there's any truth to what you said about folklore, it looks like it'll be a rather mild winter, since the middle stripe is so long. Mild is not good for furry Chow Chows!

  • Greetings Francesca, Sharkey and GK. It's great to see all three of you today! Thank you for the up-date on the wooly worm!
GK, Brutus here. I agree with you about the mild winter....bring on the snow!!! I hope we have seen the last of the 80 degrees for a few months.
Sorry, we didn't post on Monday. Mom had a dentist appt and Dad worked which meant there was no one to turn the computer on. We really need to find some thumbs! Or at least fingers.
Anyway....Kirby Bear we are so happy to hear about your eye improvement! Keep up the good work!
Welcome back, Missy Chow, we've missed you!
Nothing exciting happened with us over the weekend. Mom and Dad walked to downtown Lebanon for the Apple Fest on Saturday. They did bring back some yummy kettle corn and they did share.
Monday some guys started to put a new roof on the garage. That's going to interrupt our patio/outside time this week. But at least we won't have to worry about the roof caving in this winter.
That's about it. Well, the Reds and Bengals lost....surprised? Not us!
It's way too early (or late) so I'm going back to bed. Maxie is already in bed. I can hear him snoring....wait or is that Dad....hmmmmm.
    Oh well,
    Signing off,
    Brutus...without the Beast!

  • Hey, I've been seeing those wooly critters on my neighborhood walks! They are the cutest little furry tagalogs, aren't they? I did see a pretty yellow one the other day. Maybe the yellow fur means a snow free Winter? Aw, a girl can dream!

    Have a wooly day!

  • Good morning everyone,
I think Wooly Worms are cute. They are very fuzzy. I like winter weather but I hate the ice. It can be dangerous on the road for cars and on walkways for people and pets. But I love the snow.
Zoe, tell your dad Happy Belated Birthday. Did you get any goodies? Kirby, GREAT GREAT news on the eye issue. Dudley, I hope your mouth is healing fast. Rebel, you have a bunch of duck friends so maybe you can make friends with the heron too. Dixie Boy, any little break you can get from an energetic puppy is a good thing. Kitty, I think next time Delia goes away she should take you along. James Dean, how is Abby doing? Did she watch the fashion show too? Missy Chow, why would we think you were in trouble for misbehaving? Not you. Chi weenies, maybe you can go to visit James, Lucinda, Chewy and Black Mamma over Halloween and have a big party. Ruby, I hope they share treats with you when the football games are on. Martha, Lucy, Riley and Chloe and Brutus and Max, are any of you into football? Baby Favor, did you have a big birthday party at your house?
Well, it is deck time. I watch the school buses go by and all the people going to work. Lots of traffic so early in the morning. Didn't any of these people hear about deck time? They should try it sometime. Hehehehehehehe
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good Morning F & S

Fuzzy little thing I would have smushed it or ate it ;) GK one swat with your big paw and goodbye Wooly Bear.

Mom is being so annoying right now I'm trying to type and she keeps giving me kisses. I'm in one of those mushy moods this morning and just want to snugle but not right now I'm trying to type!!

Kirby I'm so happy your pressure is going down in your eye - great news.

Haha I just fixed mom I gave her a big smelly burp - we had some leftover lamb for breakfast so I just shared the smell with her ;)

    Zoe

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
How about this, ole Kirby is up early this morning and reading the postings of my buddies on the GS. Well it’s October already and another month in the books as they say. The paper this morning was all pink for breast cancer month. I saw my Daddy reading it. Now some people will complain about it being pink but I kind of like it that way. It seems that you just can’t please everyone these days. Worst part of that is it goes back a lllooooonnnnnggg time. I have been looking for one of those wooly bears and can’t find any of them. They are fun, but don’t mess with the white caterpillars, they are poison and will cause you trouble.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Good morning all,
Boy, we used to have so many wooly worms and not so much anymore. They are really fast. You should see them scoot across the highway! Haven't seen a one. Maybe when the farmers start harvesting the soybeans the wooly's will wake up.
Zoe, I don't think I'd like the fuzzy part to eat, but rolling on one or two might be fun!
We're so glad to know that your eye is on the mend, Kirby. A pink paper? That sounds so pretty. I bet there will be some letters to the editor, too. Goofy crabby people.
Well, it's Tuesday & it better be quieter here at work. Yesterday was almost too much! The phone kept ringing and waking me up. My morning naps are so very important to me. LOL
    Til tomorrow.
    Your pal,
    Rebel
P.S. Making friends with that long-legged galoot of a heron, I don't think so. LOL

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, It's so great to see all 3 of you wonderful sweethearts together again! You all 3 sure had fun checking out that beautiful wooly bear caterpillar out on the terrace! I know it is finally October 1st and fall is finally here! You sure are lucky to be having such nice weather! We are still having lots of rain and wind and there was a big thunder storm not far from here! We are supposed to get better weather about Thursday! Hope you all three continue to have fun and stay safe! My hugs are with you!!! Nice to hear from Brutus, Maddox, Gail, Zoe, and Kirby this morning! I reread all of your comments from you buddies yesterday and loved all of them! I'm doing a lot better and enjoy eating soft foods! Hope you all have a great day! Love Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • :-) . Good morning, Kitty here...I miss mommie delia and daddie Al. Poor Auntie is not happy with me not hanging out with her, but I just go into the woods and entertain myself.

So cute those wooly Bears, mom use to get rid of them in the barn because someone told her they were bad critters and when she found out they weren't, she cried :-(

Zoe I like the good news of your eyes and hope that everyone is doing fine.

So be good on this Tuesday!
    ;-)

    Prurrrs and rubs from me,
    Kitty =^. .^=
    hello from delia

  • Hello Girls, G.K. & all my Glue Squad Buddies,
Wooly worms, huh? Mom nor I have ever seen one in person. Do you think it is our altitude? They look weird, but cute. I want snow and winter--no ice, like Maddox says, just snow for butt vrooming. Now Brutus and Max, I wish we could have had an apple festival, but the frost got most in spring. Only apples here are from Washington. Kirby, Kirby, it is party time I do believe with your eyes doing better. I love the popcorn parties during football. Now Dudley, hope the mouth is heeling. Abby and Jimmy, how is the cat shelter doing now? Missy, so glad you are back. Thank you all for setting me straight on what MOJO is in regards to Mom. Haven't seen her butt vroom yet. I heard Mom talking to my dentist yesterday in regards to my checkup on the canine that broke off and was saved. I have to go in a few weeks and make sure nothing is dead and get my teeth cleaned. I bet Miz Lu and I will be in to our docs about the same time. It was you getting the teeth pulled or was it Martha? I get confused sometimes. How was Riley's class on Saturday? Today is Dad's one month celebration from his surgery and we are going to go on a walk around the big lake. Yahoooo!!
Everyone have a GEM of a day.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • I haven't seen any wooly caterpillars around here, but if I did I'd probably try to eat it, or Roxy would.
Mom is back from Albuquerque, so things are great at our house. Except she leaves again on Sunday to go to the Basset Hound National Specialty, so next week we will have Dad and Uncle Dick take care of us. We love Uncle Dick because he brings us special treats and lets us play outside for a long time.
It's that time of year when Mom wonders what all the football talk is for-- we are BIG baseball fans here, and OUR team, the Cardinals, will be in the playoffs. Well, I have to go; our street is getting black-topped today and I must supervise!
    A bientot!!

  • pssst, Maddox.....since this is Mayer & Chewy's 1st Halloween with the family, I'm sure my mom will figure out something cool for both of them to mark the occation. She and Lucinda try their best to make our little critter worlds as compfy and cozy as they can! We just have to keep a special eye out for our mom and her remote controlled spiders that are bigger than me and Sophie....sometimes she thinks she is just far too funny.....but we have to keep this as our little secret...don't want Sophie and Mayer to start thinking I really do like them...

  • Hello Franny,Sharkey and glue squad friends,
I am writing today with my big pug/peke/frenchie paws so please disregard any typos. We love the wooly bear caterpillars. Mom brought 124 of them into school for show and tell when she was nine years old in a big bucket with grass many years ago. She has always loved caterpillars and butterfies!
Brings back good memories for sure. now we teach her nephew all about nature, salamanders, bugs, spiders, etc.
Zoe, did you really burp in your Mom's face??? Maddox, I like that fashion runway show and the designers. There is a really cute Boston terrier in the fabric store where they buy material. Maybe the glue squad could do their own fashion runway show? We can line up the cats.. Black mama, Kitty, Jimmy followed by all our buddies. Project Glue Squad!!!
Well a girl can dream, off to catch some zzz's before we start work/horse farm sitting for the next week.
Woofs to all and purrrrs from the persian cat upstairs-
    Abby

  • Hi Y'all,
Great post on Wooly Bears. What is the forecast when you find a solid black one? I think I'm heading farther south! It was just likely confused, right? Hope so!
Kirby, It's soooo cool to have a pink paper for the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Got to get the "Save the TA TAS" flag up at the store.
Got to go! Hope everyone has a great day.
    Dixie Boy

  • Hi glue squaders..I have some bad news to tell you, the shelter neglected to tell Lucinda and James that I go into full blown attack mode.. a friend of theirs came in the kitchen..luckily he had a big coat on because I rushed him and lunged at his arm and face...I did calm down but had to kept on the leash next to Lucinda..I did growl most of the time..they did not get mad at me..just said we must work on my social skills and now i am getting a muzzel to wear around company...Lucinda says we will work on this and not to worry I am not going to be returned to the shelter and what and why anybody would train a dog to behave like that...I wish I didn't do it..but I don't know any better...wish me luck glue squaders I want to live up to glue squad standards....over and out, Chewy..p.s..guess the shelter just wanted to get rid of me because of my bad behavior..thank my lucky stars I ended up with James and Lucinda!!!

  • "Woolly bully woolly bully..." I'm here I'm here just crazed lately. I'll be back later to fully check on everyone. Kirby Bear I'm glad your eye is doing better!!!

  • Chewy, you naughty little Cattle Dog! It'll be ok buddy, you gotta mellow out...you now live with 2 of the best dog parents ever...you are home now; they won't dump you!
I sometimes get a little crazy when people come into mom's house, so she has started putting me on a leash when she see's someone coming that I don't know and she keeps my attention on her by bribing me with treats till I realize this person isn't a threat to me or our house and good things happen when someone comes to the door (treats) then I mellow out. The next step is to put a jar of treats next to our front door so our friends can offer me a treat when they come in. I'm not real keen on men in general and mom thinks I must have had a really bad experience with one somewhere down the line.
I know how insecure you feel buddy; remember, my family threw me away like garbage when they didn't want me anymore. But just like my mom, Lucinda and James will get you through this. Time for a nap. Gotta have mom get my ear buds out and turn on some Clapton to drown out Chloe's snoring...geeze, how's a guy supposed to get any rest around here......
    your buddy Mayer
