Talking To The Donkeys About The Cold

Posted by F&S

Everyone's been talking about how cold it's supposed to get and we Frenchies like to make sure that all of our farm friends have plenty of shelter from the raw elements.  That's why we paid a visit to our friends, the donks!

That's right, Sharkey! It's going to be quite cold!

We're especially worried about you three staying warm! Miniature donkeys, like yourselves, do not grow thick winter coats as horses do.

Rufus, you should also be eating a little extra now. Franny and I know from talking to the horses that putting on more body fat keeps equines warmer in the cold!

Don't mind if we do! Clive, Billy and I have been chomping on the grass like there's no tomorrow. We're so lucky to have you girls to care for us like this!

Rufus, maybe you donks should invest in some warm weather apparel like Sharkey and I have! Our fleece sweaters certainly help fight the brisk fall breezes!

Oh girls, you two are so sweet to be concerned about Rufus, Billy, and me!

The horses do grow thick coats that repel ice and snow because of natural oils. Our coats, as with most miniature breeds, aren't going to get any thicker than they are, so we'll need more protection from the elements.

This layer of straw that Dolma puts down is used not only for bedding but it also insulates the cold earth we're standing on.

  • :-) so cool to see the Donks! What a cute shed they have, lots of straw that retains heat...they look like they have it good.
Sharkey and Franchesca you two girls looked like you wanted to run after them.

Well it's Friday again...gee where do the days go to?
Everyone have a nice weekend !

  • Good morning ladies,
I never knew that donks don't grow longer coats for winter. Hmmmm. Martha should design leggings and coats for donks. She could make it out of long john material. That would keep those cute little buggers warm. Does anyone know how old the donks are now?
Well, here it is again. End of work week. Coming up. Football, raking leaves, World Series in baseball, raking leaves, nascar racing, Halloween parties and raking more leaves. That about takes care of my weekend. What about the rest of you? Let me know what you all got go in' on.....
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good morning, Francesca, Sharkey, Rufus, Clive and Billy! Great to see the donks. So when it gets really cold and snowy and windy do you go to the stables? Maybe Martha and Pet Smart could make some donkey sweaters? And why isn't your house insulated with a concrete floor and heat? Is it too early to be asking all these questions?
So any parties happening this weekend, Glue Squadders? Don't think there's much happening around here. Mom will be off now until Wednesday night, but Dad has only Saturday off work. At least someone will be home if we want to go outside.
The temps are suppose to be in the 40's during the day and mid 20's to low 30's at night. Mom picked a great time to get Brutus' hair cut! Oh well, he wouldn't mind.
Have a happy, safe and fun-filled weekend, everyone!
    Pugs and kisses

  • Good Morning F & S

Those Donks sure are cute little buggers. I love their big ears they sort of look line mine :) Maybe they need some long socks to keep their ears warm. I know my ears get cold this time of year.

I sure was happy this morning mom finally broke down and turned the heat on :) I had frost on my butt it was so cold in here! Meantime she is walking around in shorts - that woman has no blood.

Super Nanny should be arriving later today - LORD HELP ME!!! The only good thing is that I saw a big bag of cheese curls for Nicole, something to put a smile on my cute face.

I did get a very nice breakfast this morning ground beef and white rice. I wouldn't eat yesterday I had an upset tummy so mom made me something special. It was yummy and I feel much better today.

Well have a great weekend everyone. I'm going to start stashing some TP so I can make Super Nanny a little present ;)

  • Hello Girls, Donks & Glue Squad Buddies,
Well, I know who will be in 7th heaven today on the blog---Gail. I know she loves the donks. That shed is so cool, but nothing less that the best for any of Martha's family, 2 legged or 4 legged, right F & S? I hope everyone is going to have a great weekend. Lots of excitement here and the area. Weston gets to go to a Bronco game on Sunday, and everyone is a buzzin' cause this singer, Katy Perry is going to be doing a concert at Lakewood High School. That is where my people brother and sister, Weston and Sara went. Only the kids going there now, get to be there and see it. So exciting they won. And Zoe, Mom and Dad aren't going away for the weekend like your folks, but it is a big deal, they are going out for breakfast. The first time out to eat in 9 weeks since Dad's surgery. A celebration, and then we all get to have a popcorn party and watch movies. Fun Friday, you know. Hugs to all and have a GEM of a weekend.
    Love & licks,
    Ruby

  • Morning Girls * Glue Squad Buddies - Happy Friday!! Both of you girls are so kind to check on the donks to make sure they are comfy & will stay warm in the colder weather. Maybe you could bring them a nice warm blanket to share and stand on...they say if your feet; in this case, hoofs, are cold..you're cold all over, but standing on the blanket would help, yes???? Well, Mom hasn't been too happy with me the last couple of days, just a tad nippy; and in super overdrive!! Not a good thing being so close to a special day for me, I better turn over a new leaf, real quick. Maddox, please send some good vibs to me, okay, ;) thanks in advance. It was a bit chilly this morning for my walk, but my kind of weather with temps in the 30's going into the 50's today. Hope everyone has a nice weekend, plans for the weekend-football, yard work & leaves.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, How fun to see your precious donkeys Clive, Rufus, and Billy out in their pasture this morning!!! You two girls looked so cute this morning and you were so thoughtful to help the donkeys know how to stay warm in their lovely house with the great straw to keep their feet warm, too! How nice of Dolma to put that straw inside their house! Loved seeing you in your cute outfits! Wish you could hug the donkeys for me and please hug GK again! Mom was disappointed that she couldn't get a new blog from Martha this morning because of a technical problem and she will check again. We had a technical problem with Mom's phone and her brother will fix it, we hope. Will check back later to read all of your comments, Buddies! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Good morning ladies & donks!
It is so good to see Clive, Billy & Rufus again. We all know they get the best of care on the farm. Had know idea that they didn't grow winter coats.
It is frosty here this morning and I have my puff coat on here at work. It's going to be a quiet weekend at my house. Sure hope it warms up enough to do some yard work. I love to supervise, just like you ladies.
    Off for my morning nap!
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hello Billy, Rufus, Clive and all the GS maniacs:
Today is Friday, hooray! Its a nice day, sun is shining, crisp and cool but not too nippy yet. You look like you have a wonderful little house to shelter in - do you go in the barn during the winter? We have been thinking about our Halloween costumes, well maybe its Mom who has been thinking about them, however - Martha will be a ballerina with a pink tutu, I'm a pumpkin and Miz Lu will be .. I don't know what she might be, we are still deciding. We haven't had any kids for Halloween for a long time, but now we are back in the City and we expect some. Our street is decorated and kinda of spooky, and we also have two black cats, Max (who is totally black) and Guinness (who is mostly black tabby). They are both very spooky at the best of times, we like to herd them around outside, have you guys heard the saying about "herding cats"? It doesn't work very well, but we try anyways - its in our blood.
Well, this weekend is school for me, I'm working on my down and sit stay, but man it is hard for me to stay anywhere for a minute, unless I am sleeping! Looks like more leaf raking this weekend - probably get another 10 bags of leaves and Mom is going to put the fishpond to bed. Got a lot of yard stuff to do, and we will be out there helping for sure.
Well gotta go, love and Beardie bounces to all, Riley boy.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Make just one guess; what did I see yesterday and today? Frost!!!! Yep that’s right. It was cold enough these past two nights for frost to from. That means that the cooler weather is on it’s way. I love the cold and can’t wait for it to get here. Only one problem though, it will be warming up over the weekend. It never stays cold here very long before it warms up again. I thought by now that I would be used to getting the eye drops in my eyes, but I haven’t. Three times a day I have to hold still while Daddy puts one of those cold drops in my eye. Mommy said that the bottle should be in the cat’s box; it’s so warm in there. Have a good, and safe, weekend all.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi Francesca Baby and Sharkey and all the Glue Squad. It's great to keep up with everyone, even if we don't post very often these days. We always love coming here and learning something new-- didn't know that miniatures didn't grow winter coats, I wonder why?
Mom has been very busy AND it got pretty cold suddenly, so we have all been spending a lot of time snuggling and sleeping, except for a few hours in the late morning when the sun is shining on our porch and we supervise the goings-on in the neighborhood. Our Uncle Dick has been coming over quite a lot in the evenings to keep us from being lonely. We love him; he is kind and gentle and gives out LOTS of treats. He will keep visiting us next week because Mom leaves town again for a dog show-- this time she is going to be at the Rhodesian Ridgeback National Specialty. Auntie Ellen made some AWESOME One Cool Dog coats out of gorgeous African and animal print fabrics; they make me want to sing 'The Circle of Life' but I don't think anyone wants to hear ME do that ;)
    A bientot!!

  • A donk day, is a happy day! :)

Glad to hear the donks have a warm place to snuggle.

The weather was darn right brisk today in NH. Bright sun, but very chilly temps.

Have a super weekend to all the gluey's and critters!
    gail

  • Yes do the donkeys go to the stable when it gets colder. There little house doesnt look winter proof.
