Is It A Ball Or A Mushroom?

Posted by F&S

As usual, we Frenchies were wandering around yesterday when Sharkey spotted something quite strange behind a large tree.  After checking it out, we found something else that caught our attention.

Oh my goodness! What is this? Some kind of deflated kid's ball?

Francesca! Come here at once!

Relax, Sharkey. Don't you remember finding these things in years past?

Yes, it looks like some kind of soccer ball, but this thing is actually growing out of the ground. It's a giant puffball fungi and this one is certainly thriving!

This belongs to the most common species of puffball known as the Langermania giganteum, and it can reach a diameter of 12-inches or more!

Thanks for refreshing my memory, Franny. These things emerge snowy white, like marshmallows. Within a few days, a puffball begins to turn brown as the spores inside mature.

When the time is just right, an external stimulus will pop open the puffball, releasing a puffy cloud of spores to hopefully, ensure a new crop next year. This one looks like it it's beginning to turn brown.

And this little one has some catching up to do.

Now, what are these mushrooms popping out of the ground?

Let me have a closer look, Francesca.

I know what they are! They're called Shaggy Mane Inky Caps.

They emerge from the ground looking cute and shaggy.

That cute Shaggy Mane dissolves into a black inky mess at maturity. Kind of yucky, if you ask me.

  • Greetings Francesca, Sharkey, GH and Glue Squad peeps!
Those are some big 'shrooms! And that Shaggy Mane certainly is yucky! Better to stay away. We have some mushrooms in our yard from time to time and I stay far, far away. Dad hates them.
Boy is Maxie ever in trouble! (And I'm just the guy to tell everyone!) Dad caught him peeing on an interior door frame last night. Max claimed something outside got him all excited and he couldn't help himself. Yeah, right. Looks like ole Maxie-boy will spend a some time in time-out. Sucks to be Maxie right now. I'm looking better and better..hahahahaha.
The weatherman is promising cooler temps this weekend. Of course he's been saying that for a month now. Not holding out much hope.
Hope everyone's football does great and hope everyone has a great weekend.
    Pugs and kisses
    Brutie and ole pee-pants Maxie
(yes, I'm trying to get as much mileage out of this as I can!)

  • Hello ladies,
I have never seen a shaggy mushroom. I have seen shaggy dogs but never mudhrooms.
I like looking at them when I see them in the yard. But Karen smashes them and throws them away. She said she doesn't know if they are alright for dogs or not so she doesn't want to take any chances. Does anyone know if they are safe for animals or not? Don't get me wrong, she makes me laugh the way she attacks them with the pooper scooper when she is out cleaning up the play yards but if they are harmless, then they could stay and I could enjoy looking at them. Enjoy the weekend everyone
    Love,
    Maddox

  • Good Morning F & S

Happy Friday!! F & S we get all kinds of strange mushrooms growing in our yard as well especially this summer with all the rain. However, my mom is like Maddox's mom she gets rid of them right away because she doesn't want us eating anything that could make us sick, better safe then sorry she says. We get this one thing that is pink and grows out of the ground and looks like a finger, now those are ugly!

Hey Pee Pants Maxie what's up with lifting the leg in the house??? Hope your time out wasn't too long.

Sophie has to go get groomed this morning :) Too bad Sophie hahaha....... She HATES getting her nails cut so her Friday is just going to totally suck.

Mom is golfing tomorrow, going to give the hand a try and see how it feels. Sunday is football I'll be parked right next to her watching the games. I wonder what kind of good stuff she'll make this weekend???

Well have a wonderful weekend everyone!!

  • Hello Girls & all my Glue Squad Buddies,
These mushrooms look like the perfect thing for this time of year, Halloween, boil, boil, toil and trouble, or some such thing. They definitely scare me. Interesting learning about them though. Those inky ones should be called yuk ones. You sure have lots F & S.

Brutus, poor Max, but I can see you enjoying this one. We are supposed to get snow today, but nothing yet, just dumb rain. Snow, I am excited about. Another weekend and another Bronco game and treats. Yahoo! Kirby do you go to the doctor every Friday? Hope things are alright still.Miz Lu was due to get her tooth pulled. Hope all went well. We need our own Glue Squad dentist these days for sure. Everyone stay safe this weekend, but have lots of fun. Back to bed for me. Have a GEM of a day.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Good morning ladies,
EEEEYUCK! That's all I have to say. The puffballs are pretty cool, though. Those inky things are ready for Halloween to be sure. Don't get that stuff on you, it might stain!

Poor Max, I know how it goes, buddy.....hang in there.
Ruby, sure hope you get to butt vroom this weekend. Hey! spellcheck took my extra "o"s out of vroom!
Have a great weekend everybody. We're hoping for rain and the folks will be watching the Presidents Cup golf tournament.
    Have a great weekend everybody.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

Maybe you could show us some photos of you 2 with Martha in that fog next Monday-I would love it! Have never seen those Shaggy Manes before and they are very odd! Sure hope you have a wonderful weekend and say Hi to GK for me! My latest trip to my Vet on Wednesday was perfect and I am doing much better now! Sure hope all of you great buddies are doing well and will check back later to read your comments! Will go check Minnow's blog which was missing yesterday! Love you all, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello Everybody - we are back. Mom was at a conference at the North Pole (well not really the North Pole, but close, north of Ottawa) and there was no computer time for us. Dad and our human sister Sam were looking after us, so we were all just fine. Miz Lu had dental surgery yesterday, she had a fractured tooth that was really difficult to get out, but in the end it was removed in a few pieces. Hopefully she will now feel better and not be so crabby with Riley boy (although he can be very annoying sometimes). She is wagging her tail today so I think she must be feeling better. Its been so lovely and warm up here for the last while, hope it stays like that - we love to go out and lay on the cool concrete patio, sun shining, breeze blowing, all is right in our world when we are able to relax outside! We don't see mushrooms very often, but did find some growing in the new mulch Mom put down in the gardens. Those inky cap things look yukky, stay away girls! Well, gotta go, weekend looks not bad - everyone have a wonderful couple of days and we'll be back on Monday.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
What day is it? Come on you can say it. What day is it? It’s Friday, that’s what day it is. That means that the weekend is upon us. I don’t know what kind of a weekend I will be having; there is a storm in the Gulf. It will bring lots of rain here so today Daddy will be checking the drains to make sure that they aren’t full of leaves. One day Mommy moved a plant next to the front windows so it could get more sunlight. Now other dogs may want to “mark” it, so I placed my mark on it. All day long I was told not in the house Kirby; bad boy. Mommy moved the plant and I haven’t done that again. Soooo, I guess I am a good boy now. I didn’t have a vet visit today; have one next week. Have a good, and safe, weekend all.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hey, I donned a shaggy hair style back in the 70's! :)

I've seen some overgrown mushrooms/fungi in my yard, but nothing like that puffball. That sucker is huge! :)

The mild temperatures have waned and a bit of clouds and rain is moving in. Sigh, too good to last.

Happy Weekend to all the gluey's! :)

  • Hi Y'all,
I'm glad we don't have puffball that large here. I couldn't imagine the cloud of spores they give off. The little ones we have are bad enough. We've had lots of mushrooms this year because of all the rain, but I've never seen the Inky Caps. We mostly just ignore them, but the squirrels eat the white ones.
Brutie, like you, I now know what it feels like to be the good boy. George did it again last night. Mis left him alone in the kitchen and when she got back....HE WAS STANDING ON THE TABLE WITH HIS NOSE IN THE CHINESE TAKE_OUT BOX!!! Even I haven't done that, although I've done a lot! I keep looking better and better beside of him. I've become the GOOD DOG! Soon Mis will have forgotten all the bad things I did if George keeps this up! (NOT) So Max, you got any room left in time out for George?
Ruby, knowing how much you love snow, I hope you get some today. Our temps have gone back up to the high 80's with increased humidity. Mis said something about Indian Summer!? Come Monday we should be getting some of that tropical moisture from TS Karen. We could use it as we are getting dry here. The farmers have been happy though. They can get their crops in. Sweet Potato season here! Next up will be the millet and soybeans. Cotton too but we don't have any locally.
I wish everyone a great weekend and enjoy the games! I don't know much about football except that George would likely eat the ball.

  • Hi Girls & Glue Squad - I think Mom has seen a puff ball or two in the grass, looks kind of like a small golf ball but she doesn't let it stay too long, she usually steps on it. Well, Mom went shopping this morning and got caught in some rain, boy, we do need it. We've had some real nice days the past couple of weeks so we can't really complain too much. I played a trick on Mom last night; I was outside and she heard the MedFlight helicopter take off from the hospital (they fly right over our house)when she looked, I scooted inside and she didn't even know it. Well, she wanted me to come in, called me but no jingle from my collar. She was getting a little nervous, it was dark and no sign of me...hehehe, I was already inside looking OUT AT HER, how silly was that :) . She told Dad, and he laughed, oh well, one for me ;..Spa tomorrow; football Sunday and maybe more rain. Have a nice weekend everyone.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • :-) puffballs are not my favorite thing growing in the yard, they blow up...we have almost all of these except the last inky ones.
Sharkey that puffball resembles you ;-) he he
We are headed for a show called "the Legends" tonight. Tomorrow we go to the Dolly Parton Stampede show, should be fun!
Miss our Kitty and can't wait to see her.

Have a safe and happy weekend everyone!

    delia and Kitty =^. .^=
