Hens And Chicks Are Very Useful Plants

Posted by F&S

Our good friend, Ryan the gardener, somehow acquired a whole bin-full of a particular low-growing succulent plant.  We Frenchies were so curious where he was going to plant them.  And without too much effort, we found out where.

Francesca, it looks like Ryan is getting ready to plant a whole lot of succulents.

Franny, don't start salivating. I didn't say succulent, I said succulents, a type of fleshy leafed plant! In this case, were're dealing with hens and chicks.

Ah ha! I thought that's where Ryan would be planting them.

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
Hens and chicks are really neat. We have some in brick works in our yard. But I am always learning from you girls, never new how they were used in Europe. Sounds really interesting. I do definitely learn something new every day from you girls.

So how was everybody's weekend? It was great here with all the football. The folks really get loud when the Broncos are playing. I love the food. Speaking of food, I had to crack up at you George about the Chinese food. You see most of the Glue Squad knows this about me, but I arrived the day before Thanksgiving and on Thanksgiving Mom made 2 pans of dressing and left the room for just 1 minute. Came back in and the Ruby Gem had eaten 1 pan. I was starving and a mere 40 pounds then. Never did that again, but when I heard George's incident it came back very quickly. We don't have to worry about starving any more George. Off to bed now, and will check back in the morning. Have a GEM of a day all.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Good morning everyone,
You know, that Ryan must be one smart cookie. He looks like a young guy but he knows a lifetime of information regarding gardening and landscaping. I think he should take a ride on the Kawasaki one day and just take a nice slow drive all around the farm to see all the beauty there and think about how he had a huge part in it. Hip Hip Hooray for Ryan.
Well gang, what went on over the weekend? Any more pee pants episodes? Or stealing Chinese food? Any more disappearing acts? Anyone get a chance to make snow angels? Anyone have to wear rain gear? Or sun tan lotion? It was so hot and humid here this weekend. Not chow weather at all. Way too warm and sticky.
Well gang, I am headed to the deck before the sun comes out this morning. Enjoy the day and I can't wait to hear of all the adventures of the weekend
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Gee, let's hope these 'hens and chicks' don't lay eggs! :)

    Happy Monday to all..

  • Good Morning F & S

Mom has some of those chicken things around the yard in pots she got them from her mom who is the "Queen" of growing those things. She has so many of them and some even grow a flower.

Weekend is over, thought I was getting an extra day with mom on Friday but she got really sick in the afternoon. All she did was sleep so I just laid by her side in case she needed anything. Finally by Sunday morning she felt better so we did get to spend quality time in the kitchen. I got lots of apple treats while she was baking. I'm glad she is better.

Today Dad and I have to finish putting all the deck furniture away before the rain comes, it's suppose to get pretty nasty here this afternoon. The only good thing is the weather is suppose to get cooler which will make all of us happy :)

  • Good Monday morning Francesca, Sharkey, GK, Ryan and Glue Squadders!
So if those hens and chicks laid eggs would they be green???? hahahahaha
Well ole pee-pants Maxie is being "closely monitored". Which means he isn't allowed to be in a room or upstairs by himself. And if Mom and Dad aren't home he is in the kitchen with a DOGGIE GATE across the door. I tell him it beats a crate, of course I'm trying not to laugh when I say it. He went to the doctor Saturday to make sure he was ok. He is. The doc said he probably did get excited about something. Yeah, right.
    Enough about him.
How about those Bengals??!!! Welcome to Cincinnati, Patriots indeed! And yes, we know this probably won't last, but what the heck.
It was so hot here Saturday that the A/C was turned on. Mom was sick and had a fever and said she couldn't stand the heat and humidity anymore. We had rain all day Sunday and the air was turned off and today the temps are supposed to only be in the low 60's. Like the old saying, if you are in Southwestern Ohio and don't like the weather, wait a couple hours! hahahahaha
Hey George....can't tell you how many times I would grab food off the counter, the dining room table, the coffee table. I figure if they leave food out, it's up for "grabs". hahahahaha
Must be off.....my patio and cool temps await!
    Pugs and kisses,
    Brutus and Max

  • Hello F,S, GK and all the GS buddies:
Well, its Monday again, its been raining here all weekend, but at least its warm (kinda sticky though). Should have sun again by tomorrow, which everyone will appreciate! Riley boy is progressing in his education, next week is the half way mark in his schooling, he is pretty good at walking on leash, sit/stay (for a little while), and we are now working on recalls. Hard to keep that boy's attention, he is distracted very easily, but its good that he is highly food motivated! Miss Martha and Miz Lu also went to school, however its like everything, you got to use it or you lose it. Now if we could all just settle down when it was walk time ..... Mom was planting bulbs yesterday in between the rain drops and Riley boy was helping. Mom would dig a hole, then put the bulb in and then move on. She was going to fill them all in at the same time. Riley was sitting behind her observing and supervising (at least that is what Mom thought was happening). She went back to start filling in the holes and there were no bulbs in the holes! A little more investigation showed that Riley boy was picking them out of the holes and stockpiling them under a bush. I guess he thought he was helping, so we'll have a mishmash of colours next year because no one knows what bulb was what colour. I, Martha was watching this happen, but didn't feel the need to advise Mom of it. Miz Lu was in the backyard, so she didn't see. We'll just have to see what comes up next Spring, it will be a Riley boy jumble!
Well, gotta go, love to all - and way to go George, Chinese food is most excellent!
Love Riley boy, Martha and Miz Lu

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I’m a little late today. Daddy had to go back for PT again this morning and he shut the door, to the room, where the computer is located. I guess he doesn’t trust me when he isn’t here. It’s not like I would be surfing for doggy porn or something like that. Now a good chew on my tail would sound good about now. I hide in that room so no one can find me and have a good chew. My vet has about given up on my chewing; thinks it’s genetic and there isn’t anything that can be done except to watch me. At night Mommy puts a white sock on my tail so they can sleep. That works most of the time. My eye isn’t doing much better except for the pain; it’s almost gone. I guess the pressure is still coming down. I’ll find out on Friday afternoon.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi Y'all,
That's some cool information about Hens and Chicks girls! Mis didn't know that that was where the name Houseleeks came from. She learned something new today. She likes the ones they call Cobweb Houseleeks. They have thick layers of white filaments between the leaves. Great for Halloween decorations!.
No more Chinese Food episodes so far. George is very food driven you could say. He is just so full of puppy. This weekend it was all about Mis's shoes. Hadn't been bothering them at all! Now he's fixated on them. Next week it will be something else. Mis is trying to teach him ENOUGH! I don't know who has the harder head, George for not listening or Mis for thinking she can teach him anything!
Like everyone else who lives on the east coast, we're getting rain. It's good though. We need it here, but tomorrow the temps call for sweatshirts. The low 60's with wind and light showers.
Hope Zoe's and Brutus/Max's moms are feeling better. Mis has one of her headaches this morning. Just hoping it doesn't get worse or somehow we'll have to keep George calm. HA!!!!
Wishing everyone a Doggy Good Day
    Dixie Boy

  • Hi Girls,

Hey, I was wondering what those were called. Mom had (take notice to had) a bunch of those in the yard in pots but I pulled them all out last year. I had so much fun. I would wait till mom went in the house then I would rip them out. She would come out screaming and chasing me all the time :) We had so much fun running in the yard. Well, at least I did.
And now the bad news..... I got skunked again Saturday morning :( Was out nice and early and so was that darn skunk. I thought mom was going to cry when she opened the door and smelled me. A direct hit to my beautiful face :( Mom washed me twice then sent me to Lily's for more baths. Marco did the best he could but my mouth still smells a bit. Any suggestions to get the smell out???? I am willing to try anything.
Anyway, enough with that. I am waiting now for mom to get home for my afternoon walk before the rain gets here. But if it does rain we still go out. Mom says she loves walking in the rain and so do I :)
    Have a great day everyone.

    Love
    Chloe xx

  • Hi Buddies, Chewy here, hens and chickens don't have any of those little succulents..Maybe we'll plant some..raining here in my corner of the northwest..was beautiful yesterday..I wore my orange reflective vest when we patrolled the property..hunting season, don't want to be mistaken for a coyote..I am behaving better every day..and I am putting on weight..see the Seahawks lost..but we still had snacks and James swore at the screen a couple times..Lucinda is stomping around the house..says hoarder comes to mind when she looks around..looks like some boxes are coming out and being filled for the Goodwill..but like usual she will dig thur them at the last minute and save a bunch of stuff..does this sound familiar?..people..!!!hope we bake warrior prince cookies today..love those things..didn't know the Warrior Prince but I hear he was a cool guy!..gotta keep an eye on these two, over and out, Chewy

  • ..oh, Chloe, how awful..don't know anything about skunks...what naughty critters..maybe your mom can put some rocks or marbles in a pop can, tape it shut and before you go out..go out and rattle the can..scared Kodiak bears away when James lived in Alaska..should scare a rotten little skunk...over and out, Chewy

  • Evening Girls, Ryan & Glue Squad-I'm a little late today. Mom stopped to see her aunt after work, she's home from rehab is doing pretty good, she's glad to be home. Mom planted this year a hen & chick plant, but I'm not so sure it did too well. She did move it, but guess we will have to wait and see next year if it took or not. Brutus & Max, your team beat us yesterday for sure, not a good day for NE. Maybe next week! George, don't feel bad about counter surfing, I did it too, took a hamburger off the counter then brought it out to the porch to show Mom & Dad. Dudley, glad you are doing much better. Kirby, keep us posted on your doctors appt, keeping my paws crossed for you. Zoe, hope your Mom is feeling better. Hi to all my friends & buddies. We are suppose to get some heavy winds and rain tonight, hope there's no thunder or I might have to keep Mom & Dad company so they are not afraid, hehehe..

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo
