Harvesting An Unusual Fruit

Posted by F&S

How many of you glue squadders have heard of a fruit called pawpaw?  No, it's not named after GK's grandfather, Paw Paw, the great Chow Chow.   Rather, it's a fragrant and delicious fruit which is native to the United States and is only available for a few short weeks in late summer/early autumn.

I'll just reach up here and grab these last remaining pawpaw fruits.

The pawpaw is a classic example of why you should never judge a book by its cover. Its odd bean-like shape and mottled skin make it a hard sell for consumers.

Sharkey, these pawpaws don't look so good, but boy, do they ever smell great! They're quite fragrant and are redolent of banana, mango, peach, and melon.

You're right, Franny, and as you can see, we've had a bumper crop this year. Maybe we should take these into the headhouse and cut one open so the glue squad can see what they look like on the inside.

You know, the pawpaw has quite a history. They were a popular snack of Native Americans, Lewis and Clark wrote about eating them on their expedition, and Thomas Jefferson grew pawpaw trees at Monticello.

Despite all its qualities, the pawpaw remains mostly unknown because, unfortunately, it bruises easily, doesn't travel well, and has a shelf life of only 1 to 2 days.

As far as recipes go, you can use delicious pawpaws in numerous ways - in pies, cakes, quick breads, cookies, juices, puddings, ice cream, sorbet, etc.

So, if you want to sample pawpaws, I doubt you'll find it in the supermarket. Look for this fruit instead, in late summer and early fall, at farmer's markets and specialty stores. Or go on a pawpaw expedition by taking a hike in the woods!

  • Good morning ladies,
I am familiar with a herb called PawPaw. Karen knows a herb specialist and she comes to the house and checks out all of us dogs and tells Karen what herbs we should each be taking, if any. So, from hearing them talk about all kinds of herbs, I know the herb PawPaw is very good for cancer patients. I was wondering exactly how many fruits and veggies does Martha grow on the farm? She should have a contest for the Glue Squad to see who gets closest and the winner gets to visit the farm and have a meal prepared by Chef Pierre. That would be kool. Hehehehehehehe
I am so bummed. We lost our cable for the tv at 4am this morning. No Animal Planet, no worldly news, nothing. That usually happens if someone hits a pole. If that is the case, I hope everyone is alright. I can do without TV for a few more hours. However, the deck is all wet so I can't go out there either. I will judt have to go to bed and check back later
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good Morning F & S

Well I'll be darn never heard of a Paw Paw fruit. So what did you make with all your fruit? I have to say it doesn't look that yummy even when you sliced it :(

Sharkey you need a bath!!! Looks like you were out rolling in the dirt while out picking fruit. Dig up anything good???

Mom was up and out early this morning she has meetings in North Jersey. It felt like my head just hit the pillow and she was up and out. I need to go catch a few more snoozes with dad, doesn't she know I need my beauty sleep!

  • Good morning Francesca, Sharkey and Glue Squadders!
We have never heard of a PawPaw fruit before, but Mom says she has. I guess Paw Paw trees grow around here in the woods. She said when she was growing up (which was years and years ago..hehehe) her neighbor would go into the woods and gather Paw Paws and then sell them. Mom says, if she remembers right, they tasted strange and the texture was weird. Learn something new every day.
Max here. I noticed that Brutus has been going behind my back and calling me names. Hrumph! Well I can't help it if I get excited and there's no one here to open the door so I can go out. I have to watch and protect my domain, don't I? And there's worker guys here putting a new roof on the garage. They need to know this house is protected by the best. Right? Somebody has to patrol. Brutus is so laid back he just watches them. So there, Brutie!
And that trip to the doctors was uncalled for! The things they do to a sensitive guy like me! Do they really have to take my temp every time? And there? Really?
    Enough about that.
The weather is finally fall-like here. Temps in the 60's today. Sunshine. Great patio time.
    Have a great Tuesday everyone!
    Max

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
Nobody in the house has ever heard of PawPaw Fruit. Dad thought I was telling him a joke and said what's the punchline and I said no, Franny and Sharkey grow them. I'll let you all taste them and tell me what they are like and I will stick to my Turkey Stew thank you.

Chloe, I am so sorry you got skunked. I have been watching my kingdom at night and everyone is out forging for the winter ahead, it is no wonder you got it. I want to thank all of you for your wonderful and superior jobs on Ruby's Landscape and Design crew this summer. I have great ideas already brewing for the next summer. Also, I have put in an order for your bonuses with the Warrior Prince Biscuit Baker and you never know what treats will be coming your way, stay alert gang.

Some of you must have been still enjoying your weekend yesterday. Hope all return today. Have a GEM of a day all.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • :-) well I must be tiered from travel because I posted on yesterday's comment for today!
    I didn't know Paw-Paw was a native fruit! Interesting...

Got to get going on our journey home...
    Hope everyone is well!

    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Sharkey, you are too cute! I want to be a member of your glue squad, so how do I qualify? Do I have to glue myself to something? Haha. Pawpaws look good...can't have too many pawpaws in your paw, right? (Mom is giving me a dirty look - I'd better go). Live long and be fruity!

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, WOW! Mom and I have never heard of or seen the pawpaw plant before! Mom does remember GK's grandfather handsome Paw Paw from many years ago and she loved him, too! We sure wish that we could get some of those nutritional pawpaw fruits for both of us to eat and we bet they would taste great! I love all of this great information you shared with us today and can't wait to read about more from you! Awesome! Delicious! Hope to see GK with you sweet girls tomorrow and please give him a big hug from me! Sure hope all of you great Glue Squad buddies and your parents are doing well and can't wait to hear from all of you! Maddox, we love your information about pawpaws and Mom knows all about Martha's great farm by following her blog every day and she has so many great fruits and vegetables there! Our weather is getting cooler and a bit wetter, but the sun still comes out and the wind blows! Zoe, hope you enjoy another day with your Dad! Hope you all have a great day! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Can’t say I’ve seen a pawpaw in my whole life. My Daddy told me that his grandfather had some pawpaw trees growing wild on his farm in West Virginia. He said that they were good to eat but you shouldn’t eat very many at one time. He said that if you did, you’d find out all about the outhouse behind the house. I don’t know what he is talking about, but I’ll bet it isn’t very good. My Daddy tells me all about his grandfather; I’ll bet Maddox tells GK about his grandfather too.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi Y'all,
Great story about Pawpaws girls. They are natives in this area too, though more are planted on purpose to attract a special kind of butterfly. The Zebra Swallowtail uses Pawpaws as their host plant. Those caterpillars feast on the foliage then after metamorphosis turn into the most spectacular black and white striped butterflies! They are a real treat to behold! Do you ever see any?
Ruby, thanks for the beautiful card welcoming Fall! This is a most favorite time of year here! The temps are in the low 60's today, making us all a bit friskey! But unfortunately we don't expect to be seeing the sun for many days to come. Spritzes and clouds for the entire week!
Max, I agree! It just ain't natural!
Maddox, maybe Karen can run a movie for you. Snow Dogs sounds good! Chloe, Mis is just glad that we don't have any skunks locally. I'd have real problems. Has your mom ever tried using lye soap? That's what Mis uses on Zeke when he rolls in scat. Works pretty good, though the homemade stuff would be better. Commercially they don't make it as strong!
Today is barking day, got to go and join in!
    Have a Doggy Good Day!
    Dixie Boy

  • Thanks for the info on pawpaws. I think I've heard of them before but didn't really know what they were. Oh noes Chloe not the dreaded skunk! Macom Fawcett, you are already a long standing Glue Squadder! I hope everyone has a fab day!

  • Hello Everybody - Pawpaws, what a cool sounding fruit. Have heard of them, but have never seen them. Even though they don't look very appetizing, I'm sure I'd like them, I like most everything and will eat anything that isn't green! I'm expanding the palette of my sisters as well, cause if I'm eating it they think it must be good and they want it too! See what a good example I am!
Finally stopped raining today, but its gotten quite a bit colder, which is great weather for dogs with lots of hair (like us!). Nothing much exciting is going on, but as the International Director of Ruby Gem's Landscape Design I would be happy to hear of the future plans for the company. Just think, pretty soon we'll be like the ZZ Top song, ... We're bad, we're nationwide! I'm good with the bulbs, have a knack for mixing up the colours just right - a surprise each and every time! Looking forward to our long weekend this week, its Thanksgiving for us on Monday, lots of turkey, dressing, potatoes, rolls, pie etc. etc. Did I tell you I just love food, maybe I have mentioned it before. I'm a growing boy you know ....
Well, gotta go, Beardie bounces to all, Riley boy, Miz Lu and Martha.

  • ..yo, fellow squaders.. a little excitement here this a.m., I chased the tribe..and yes, I did get in trouble..but it was worth it..those guys can run!...Lucinda and James are going shopping today, so i am staying home, sleeping, playing with my toys and guarding the house..there is even a sign on the door that says security dog on duty..yeah! I like that!...gotta go see what is going on in the kitchen..oh guess what, I have my very own red fleece blanket and two, yes, two pillows on the bed..never had that at the shelter!!!over and out, Chewy..p.s. never seen a paw-paw..and James and Lucinda in their travels have never seen one...hmmm!

  • Well, how about them apples, err pawpaws! :)

I learned something new today. I never heard of this unusual fruit before.

Leave it to F&S to enlighten the gluey's about new and exciting things!
