Do You Know About Kalanchoe Beharensis?

Posted by F&S

As you may know, we Frenchies have a strong need to find out everything that goes on at the farm.  Our curious nature sends us out whenever possible to explore and learn.

Because of its fuzzy leaves, it's also called felt bush.

The underside of the leaves have eerie tooth-like projections. I think this is Martha's favorite kalanchoe.

Hi Ryan. I suppose these plants have grown too large and you look like you're figuring out what to do with them since they're too big for winter storage in the greenhouses.

Baby plants grow up from the base of the big one and you just dig them out and pot them up.

Well, that certainly is a good solution, as smaller plants take up far less room in the greenhouse.

I really do like the large, arrowhead-shaped grayish-green leaves all cloaked with a velvety bronze fuss. They remind me of donkey ears, which I think some people call these plants.

And in this bucket are all of the cuttings that you are going to root. One large Kalanchoe makes many smaller one. You're a very thrifty gardener, Ryan!

  • :-) my goodness Franchesca and Sharkey you certainly have some unique plants. I heard of Kalanchoe but never knew what it looked like.
I brought in many potted plants this year in the hopes of saving them for next Spring...well we will see.
Today it was sunny and a bit warmer, this made for a nice Sunday.
So here's hoping everyone here had a nice weekend as well

    Hugsies to all...

  • Another way to infuse 'donks' into the blog! :) I've heard of donkey tail plant (Sedum morganianum).

It's been chilly in NH, I'm thinking the mild temps are asleep until next Spring!

    Happy Monday to all

  • Good morning everyone,
We had a very special weekend. Karen took Wu Tang and Sequoia to a Chow Specialty in Virginia. Wu Tang won Best of Opposite Sex. There was a trophy there that can be retired but it has to be won three times by the same breeder. It can be different chows that a person bred but it has to be the same person doing the breeding. Journey, a chow Karen bred won that title two times at that show. Once when she was about two years old and again when she was 10 years old as a Veteran chow. Journey also happens to be PAW PAW's granddaughter. When she won the second time that was the last time she showed in a ring. She passed away about a month later. Journey loved to go to dog shows and she loved meeting all the people. Wu Tang looks a lot like Journey. Wu Tang is Paw Paw's great grand daughter The trophy has name plates on it of all the chows that won before and no one has won it for 20 years. When I retired a trophy a couple years ago, that trophy was not won for 30 years. Karen is so honored to have a part in retiring those trophies as there is a lot of history in them and good memories. Also, Sequoia the heathen, as I lovingly call her, won for puppies and she got nice gifts as well. And Harley, who is also a girl that Karen bred and is owned by Gerry and Dick Roberts won Best Of Opposite Sex in the Veteran class. She is 9 years old and she too is a great granddaughter of Paw Paw. Karen could hardly sleep all night because she was so excited. I think I will get off the computer and turn the lights out so maybe she will take a nap and dream about her beloved chows. Of course, I feel I am the most beloved. Hehehehehehehe.
Soooooo, how was your weekend everyone?
    Love to all,
    Maddox
PS -Happy 10th Anniversary to Zoe's mom and dad.

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
A perfect day for an in greenhouse lesson. It is brrr
here this morning---maybe a fire and cocoa day. Mom says she has seen the small varieties of Kalanchoes, but never this type. I think it can't decide what holiday to be a part of--Halloween as it is weirdo looking, or Christmas because it looks like holly kinda. Soon you girls will be putting on your boots to go adventuring---I have a pair anyone can have, hehehehe.
I got to party all weekend, it seemed. A birthday celebration on Saturday night, as Dad's 64th b-day is the 30th. And then watching the Bronco game and treats. Fun and food, my kind of weekend.
Anxious to hear of everyones weekend. Congratulations to Karen and Wu Tang and Sequoia. These awards and trophies sound really great. Maddox, are you giving her a PARTY? Fun and food. In the new kennel is there a giant room just for the trophies and ribbons? She will already have to make an addition. Kirby, those drops don't sound fun at all, and 3 times a day. You are very brave. Zoe, how was Super Nanny? Any T.P. parties? Dudley,is Mama Jan keeping warm on these cold days in front of your wood stove? At least with house guests, she will get help on the chopping of wood this year.
Everyone have a GEM of a day.
    Love & licks,
    Ruby

  • Good morning ladies,
Very cool plant! I like my neighbors fuzzy plant, I think it the ears of some other animal, maybe a lamb?
I was a real night owl last night. I had my monthly bath and it pooped me out so I slept all day & didn't sleep very well last night. Of course I didn't want to be awake by myself. I managed to wake Mimi up 3 times and Papa once. They aren't very happy with me today. I bet they won't let me nap very long today!
Congratulations, Karen & crew. You are a very special lady.
Hey, Ruby, is it snowing at your house?
    Have a great day everybody.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, You two sweet girls sure did have fun checking out these very unusual plants with Ryan!!! Ryan looks so handsome and you girls look so beautiful checking so many great things that go into the greenhouses during the winter! I have never seen these beautiful plants before and can't wait to see so many other things and places all around Martha's fabulous Bedford farm! Please hug GK and Martha for me again! Hope you have another great day and we will finally get sunshine now that the fog and heavy clouds are finally gone for a while! Delia, sure glad that you had nice weather on Sunday and we did, too! God bless you and sweet Kitty! Gail, sure hope it gets warmer where you live! Maddox, how nice to hear about so many of Karen's great Chow Chows that were daughters of Paw Paw and I'm sure they were all beautiful because he was so handsome and always fun to see with Martha! GK also looks a lot like Paw Paw! Hope to hear from more of you great buddies very soon! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Well I don’t have as much to tell about as Maddox has today. Just the normal weekend for me. Home alone on Sat. morning and again on Sun. afternoon. I tell you, Mommy and Daddy do get around even if they are getting older. Let me get onto something else before one of them see this. This morning I thought I was going to get my run at the cat. I saw him while I was outside and took off after him. Ran smack dab into the gate. It is a chain link gate and was closed. Darn hard to see with just one eye. The cone stopped me before my nose hit the gate. I think I have found one good thing about the “cone” but the other thousand bad things are still there. Hehehehehe. I need a nap about now.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Good Morning F & S

All I can say is you must have every type of plant know to man at the farm. Ryan must be a smart guy to know how to care for all of them. Maybe my mom needs a Ryan she just killed her new cactus plants she got for the kitchen.

Maddox your mom must be one happy camper this morning. We should start calling her Ms. Chow :)
GK you have some pretty famous relatives.

So I survived Super Nanny. She was pretty good this time plus I didn't cause any trouble. It must be my age I'm becoming a softie - my devil horns are not coming out that often. Mom and dad loved their weekend in NYC. Mom said she was disappointed in the shows but loved their dinners. I'm glad she is home :)

    Zoe

  • :-) Karen my dear, what a wonderful accomplishment...Congratulations! Wow to have such great breeding skills of matching pedigrees of Genotype and Phenotype is amazing...
Maddox you certainly must be proud to be a part of Karen's doggie harem.

Happy that we know you through the DW-GS! ;-)
    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

p.s. Happy 10th Anniversary to Zoe's mom and dad...

  • Hello everyone!
We bet Ryan is sooooo thankful for the help and knowledge of you ladies. We've never heard of the "donkey ears", lamb's ears yes. We learn something new every day.
Congratulations Karen! What a great honor. And thank you Maddox for telling us all about Paw Paw's decedents. Once again, we learn so much from this blog.
Our weekend was pretty good. It was cold and windy on Saturday, but Sunday sunny and nippy. And the Bengals won....again. We are probably more surprised than anyone.
Friday Brutus had his hair cut. And we mean CUT! His tail is usually a pretty plume. Not anymore! Since he chewed on it for more than a month, which made most of it one big matted mess, the groomer had to shave it down to skin. So now he is sporting a rat's tail. Not kidding! He is as embarrassed as he can be, but that is what happens when you chew.
It is sunny and beautiful out today, so we think we will head for the patio to look for some girl dogs prancing down the bike trail.
    Pugs and kisses,
Brutus and Max (I still have all my tail, curled and on my back! hahahaha)

  • Hello francesca, Sharkey, and all GS friends,
We like the huge kalanchoes, especially their fuzzy leaves. I have never seen any so big before... nice of Ryan to transplant the little ones for the winter greenhouse. It must be a magical place.
Maddox, congratulations to Karen, WuTang, Sequoia and all your chow family! Exciting news.
Zoe, did you get lots of errant cheese curls that fell to your floor? Perhaps you decorated with the tp for Halloween streamers??? Ruby, glad you partied it up all weekend and hope Dad and Mom enjoyed breakfast out. Rebel, what is a puff coat? Kirby, hope your eyes feel better. Riley, how was dog school? Missy Chow, the world series is tied up so keep your paws crossed for our team!
I am reading with Mom all about Halloween... purrs to dear Kitty and my buddies,
James Dean the persian boy cat

  • ..thanks for the info on the plants.. we need one of those..wow..Karen, good job with the doggies!..Kirby, be careful, buddy, the rest of my crazy pals have a good day!..love, Chewy

  • bbrrrr,is all I have to say this morning!! After waking up to rain yesterday, we thought our beautiful Indian Summer was over, but I guess not! Sun is out, but man, is it cold! Mom says she's sure Chewy, the naughty cattle dog, has a sweater on this morning; cause if it's cold at our house, it's really, really cold at his house. He has a pellet stove to stretch out next to...we just have floor vents...not fair!! We have these fleece lined sleeping bags tho and they keep us pretty snuggly.
Congrats to Karen. Maddox, you must be so proud of your mom!
Zoe, isn't hard to behave when mom & dad aren't home? Not only do I have to controll myself, I have to make sure Sophie & Mayer don't get into any trouble. Sophie is such a bad one! She is so tiny, and looks so sweet, but that is so not her! She is a demon in disguise! Halloween is a holiday made just for her! Her newest mean trick is to hide under the entertainment center~me and Mayer are to big to fit~and wait for Mayer to walk by and then jump out and grab him by the back leg. It wigs him out! I keep telling him the longer he puts up with her badness the worse she gets. She learned a long time ago that I will only take so much nonsense from her and then I flip her over on her back and scoot her around the kitchen floor. She screams like I'm killing her and mom will come in and make me let her up. She is such a brat!
Hope everyone has a great week. I've gotta go watch the neighbor work on his new carport
    Chloe, the Queen Chiweenie

  • Hi Girls & Glue Squad - just a tad behind schedule today. Between Ryan and both of you helping him with the all the plants on the farm, you could definitely write a book and it would be definitely a best seller for the G/S. We would all know how to have beautiful plants as well. Zoe, Mom took in her cactus plants from outside and they are starting to get little buds on them. She have flowers on them in a few weeks. Ruby, more landscaping at our house this weekend with all the leaves and there's plenty more to fall. Congratulations to Karen,
Wu-Tang & Sequoia, bet you were singing all the way home from Virginia. Maddox, you must be very proud :) . Hope everyone had a nice weekend.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo
