You may remember when we introduced the pair of white doves to you on this blog.  Well, we have something big to report!  One of the doves laid an egg!

Francesca, did you see that one of the white doves is sitting on a nest? I heard that she laid an egg! I wonder if that means we'll have a baby dove?

I've heard that doves are notoriously inept when it come to building nests. I watched Laura Acuna put this little basket in the cage along with some nesting material.

Good thing we have a book to read to inform us on what is happening in the dove cage.

I've heard that doves only lay one or two eggs, but it will be good to read some important facts.

Franny, it says that dove eggs are white and glossy and quite round. The parents share incubation duties with the male doing most of the day shift and the hen sitting at night.

The only problem is, we just don't know if one of these doves is a male. This book says that their sexual organs are internal and there are no obvious visual differences between the two. With that said, the egg may not even be fertile!

Sharkey, all this dove cares about is eating. He's probably the male, pigging out and shirking his day shift responsibilities. Men, who can figure?

Well, if you're right, Franny, we should see a baby hatch in about 12 - 14 days. By the way, baby doves are called squabs. The book says that doves are excellent parents and care for their babies very well.

Sharkey, I've also heard that the parents make a special nutritious milk, which they feed the squab until its ready to begin eating seeds, fruits, and vegetables. A new baby, we hope, we hope!!! This is so exciting!!!!

  • Hello Girls, Glue Squad Buddies, & hopefully expectant parents to be,
How exciting for the entire household to be watching and waiting for an arrival. It should be around Halloween. We could name it little boo. Keep us posted girls. They have a beautiful layout for sure.

I hope everyone had a better weekend than me. It didn't end up snowing on Sunday after all and the Broncos lost their game. It wasn't good for me, as Mom and I both got put in time out for excessive loudness and smack talk. A girls gotta do, what a girls gotta do. I will be anxious to hear of everyones weekend adventures. Zoe, hope your Mom had fun at her tailgate party. Does she ever talk smack and get put in a time out?

Have a GEM of a day all.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Ooh how fun.. a squabette in the works! :)

Girls rule, boys drool, huh Frannie girl! :)

Will there be a baby shower? :)

    Happy Monday to all..

  • Good morning everyone,
Doves are so pretty to look at. I guess even prettier if you are a cat. Hehehehehehehe. My bad. I would think if they are a part of a household where cats live, the cats get used to them and leave them alone. Keep us updated on baby news.
Kirby, did you get to enjoy your birthday gift from your dad yet? Chloe Chiweenie, I must have missed the part of what your health issue is, but it sounds like your mom has a plan figured out. I hope everything will be alright. Ruby, you got snow and Missy Chow had nice warm weather. Should have been reversed so Missy could make snow chow angels. Zoe, your mom should have stuck you in a backpack and taken you along to the game. Hehehehehehehe Riley, how did your training classes go? Your mom should run you around like crazy so when you do your DOWN you will be tired and have no problems doing the down. Abby, did you get to ride on any of the horses when you went to visit them? Next time take James Dean. He might like the other cats that were there. Well, all the rest of you Glue Squad maniacs, report in so I know how your weekend went.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good Morning F & S

Hmmmm...can you say Dove omelet ;) Only kidding I hope we are all welcoming in a new bird by Halloween.

Did this weekend fly by or what? Mom was gone most of the time so I just hung out with dad. She did come home early from the game yesterday said those Eagles just suck and that she'd rather have a root canal. Now I've never had one of those but she must really hate getting that done. And yes Ruby she was talking smack but about her team!!!!

So as we are sitting having coffee reading the paper this morning she tells me Super Nanny will be arriving on Friday!!! What the hell we just had Super Nephew!! Dad is taking her into NYC for their anniversary - are you kidding me??? I told her she needs to stay at the Plaza so I could join them. I was hoping GK could pull some strings so I can stay there - a king suite over looking the park would do just fine. So that is how I start my Monday - I may just go back to bed :(

    Zoe

  • I want to know why doves are inept at building nests. I mean, what's the problem? Is there a shortage of doves as a result? I don't think so. Hmm, something to mull on a Monday, along with Zoe's dove omelets.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I see your you two have gone to the birds. Hehehehe Just kidding. In the springtime my Mommy takes all the fur she combs out of me and puts it where the birds can get to it. It makes nice soft nest for those young birds. I guess you could say I am a recycler of come sort. See, Chows are good for something after all besides being handsome. Hehehehehe It was another short weekend and it’s Monday already. Time sure does fly by when you are having fun. I’m still waiting for my run at the cat; coming soon I hope. I did make a run at the neighbors cat and almost caught it, but Mommy stopped me. She said that the cat did not have any claws and could not protect itself. Now I don’t know about that; all I know is it is a cat and cats are for chasing.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, OMG! Thank you both you sweet, lovely girls for sharing this latest blog about those possible new doves in the dove's bird cage in Martha's home at her Bedford farm! It's so interesting to learn about those beautiful doves and can't wait to possibly see a new baby dove very soon! I think I've seen some big doves flying around our yard near our cedar trees! All birds are fun to see! How is your weather? We have had many days beginning with heavy fog and the last few days without any sun available and it's kind of cold outside plus a bit drizzly! Can't wait for the sun to come back! Please hug GK again and hope Martha is having fun in LA, California! Nice to hear from Ruby, Gail, Maddox, and Zoe this early morning and I will try to comment more after hearing from the rest of you buddies later! Love Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • :-) Monday Morning...Really? Gee where did the weekend go!
I love Doves and had a pair one white one ring neck they bred but the baby bird squab was crippled...but it did get around.

As far as the weekend, well I hate thinking about it. I have commissions for Xmas ornaments. One was finished and was varnishing it (I thought it was varnish!) and the other one almost done I dropped. I had to paint highly detailed ones AGAIN on new bulbsI I couldn't even get mad it was so stupid...so no more commissions for me :-(

Kitty has been a good girl and has a new routine, seems to be a different ritual whenever we return from a trip...cats are funny about stuff like this.

Sound like a mixed bag of weekend for the GS buddies!

    Hope everyone's OK! ;-)

    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Hello all my GS buddies - its Monday again, although its sunny and bright here and that makes everything seem better. We read about the doves and impending arrival of a new little one - what is the difference between doves and pigeons? Even if the doves aren't so good at making nests it doesn't seem to impair their breeding capabilities, they are everywhere (or maybe those are pigeons??). Something to ponder on.
Well this weekend was good, we got most of our leaves raked up - 10 big brown bags of them - and the tree is only half empty! Riley boy was supervising Mom out front - he had his leash on, but was sticking around pretty good - until the neighbor started up his power washer, and then Riley only wanted in! He doesn't like loud noises at all. Maddox, we take your comment to heart about tiring him out to get a better down stay, however its not the down that is the problem, it is the stay! Wherever Mom is is much better than where Riley boy is supposed to stay, so he wants to come see her all the time! We'll have to work on it. Our thoughts and prayers are with the dog who was attacked by the bear (a late posting on Friday). Please keep us updated - we are sending healing thoughts his way!!
Well gotta go, out to sun ourselves on the patio and compare notes with each other. Love and beardie bounces Martha, Miz Lu and Riley boy.

  • Hi,
I'm Matilda. Dixie Boy is outside being a boy so Mis thought I might like to blog today. It's so cool that you have birds living IN the house. Mis would like to have parakeets again but she can't trust us or those canines. She can't even trust the canines to leave us alone, much less a bird. So she visits the ones at PetSmart. It's great news about the egg. Maybe, just maybe a little one will hatch. Such a grand event for sure. Mis remembers when she was little visiting a man that raised parakeets. Her mom took her there to pick one out. He had little babies there too and it was so exciting to see. So she said.
Okay, Kirby I can't say that I approve of you chasing cats. Dixie Boy would say, " Go For It"!! He tends to get a bit to serious about the chase though. George is beginning to push his luck. He really just wants to play with us but we don't trust him.
Chloe, Our prayers are with you and your family that you can come through this without problem. Mis thought about you all weekend. Sometimes just the shock is the worst part. We're here to help if you need it!
And Black Mamma, Your tribe sounds interesting. It's just us three cats here at Mis's. we're very domesticated and like stsying in the gazebo or under the house. Mis is getting the gazebo closed in with wire and has plans to keep us contained. So keep trying to go inside. I think you'll find it's very rewarding!
Okay, talk to you when I catch Dixon away from the computer. And remember Cats Rule!!!!!
    Matilda

  • Hello All,
How could I have forgotten (I guess because of the weekend, and my morning mind) to let Chewy know to send prayers to the dog's family that the dog is recovering from the bear attack. He was very brave to protect the family and our prayers are with him for recovery.
    Love and hugs,
    Ruby

  • Sorry this is so late today. We finally had sunshine this morning so we stayed outside. Mom and Dad both work tonight so we are bad inside while Dad goes to work and Mom is getting ready to take a nap. Whew!
    Enough about them.
Hello Francesca, Sharkey, Doves and maybe baby, and Glue Squad!
Chloe we are thinking of you and praying for you!
Ruby, sorry about the lack of snow and the Broncos. And Zoe, sorry about those Eagles. BUT...the Bengals won again!!! And believe us.....we are as surprised as you guys!!!!
Saturday was rainy and yucky and Sunday was beautiful, but Mom and Dad had to go to a dance competition for our human cousin Rachel. So we stayed in the house way too much over the weekend. Rachels' team won first place, however. Mom says she is glad that she had boys because she is NOT a dance competition person. Football is the sport around here.
Must be off...Mom is getting ansy about her nap.
    Pugs and kisses,
    Brutus and Max

  • ..doves, they are cute guys..we have wild ones flying about and lots of band-tail pigeons..they are too clever for the ferals to catch..it is that time of the year when people dump animals off on the logging road next to the farm/property..spotted a skinny doggie in the woods..we will try to coax him out today.. and get him to the vet for medical attention...my buddy, Jake who got attacked by the mama bear is doing much better..has to have his bandage changed every 3 days and his wound cleaned..poor old guy!..I better help Lucinda put a roast in the oven and then pop out and see if everyone is behaving ..over and out..Chewy, the red cattledog

  • Good afternoon everybody!
It was a quiet-sorta-weekend at our house. Mom was home all day Saturday but she went to a small persons birthday party Sunday afternoon. I've tried to tell her that the minute she shuts the front door Sophie takes that as her clue to start doing really, really naughty things. It's not Mayer and I that makes the house look like a bomb has gone off in the living room. This time she jumped up and caught the edge of the garbage can liner and pulled it over. There was trash everywhere....I tried to tell her she was going to be in big trouble but she would not listen. Mom has caught her swinging off the garbage can before and it's a pretty funny sight She then went into the bathroom and grabbed the toilet paper and made a mad dash down the hall and into the living room before it came off the roll. Sophie says that's what mom gets for leaving us home alone!!! Mom came in, looked at the distruction, said we were bad little beasts and cleaned up the mess! She never stays angry very long.
We feel so bad for our friend Jake. What a brave old boy he is!
Maddox, my mom found a lump on my tail. We shot off to the Vet and our worst fear came true. I din't understand why my mom started to cry and grabbed me up in her arms and held me close; so I kissed her face and nose and tried to make her feel better..
It's another beautiful Fall day in the Pacific Northwest and in another few minutes the sun will be on our deck. I think I'll take my afternoon nap out there and catch a few rays....better scoot so I can get the best spot for relaxing
Hope everyone has a great week!
Chloe, the Queen Chiweenie, Sophie and Mr. Mayer
