A Stroll In The Cutting Garden

Posted by F&S

We Frenchies were walking past the cutting garden the other day when we spied Laura, the housekeeper among the tall blooms.  Knowing a thing or two about flowers, we were happy to share some facts with her.

Hi there, Laura! I see that you are cutting beautiful cosmos flowers. I trust you're making a bouquet for Martha of Cosmos bipinnatus, also known as Mexican asters?

The name cosmos comes from the Greek word for harmony or ordered universe, apparently referring to the evenly placed petals of these pretty blooms.

Franny, cosmos, like so many warm weather annuals, like zinnias and marigolds, originated in Mexico and South America. In fact, Spanish priests grew cosmos in their mission gardens in Mexico.

Cosmos bipinnatus is considered a half-hardy annual, meaning that plants may reappear in the same location via self-sowing for several years.

Cosmos come in single and double blooms and in shades of pink and purple, as well as white.

Laura, they also don't mind growing in poor soil conditions. Cosmos grow very easily when direct seeded into the planting area.

Cosmos have tall and lanky stems and the plants can become top heavy. However, when they're planted together in groups, their leaves interlock, supporting one another.

Well, Laura, that's just about all we know regarding cosmos and we can't wait to see the lovely arrangement you make for the house.

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
I love learning about the Cosmos. We have lots around our house. They look so pretty against your white fur Sharkey. Everyone on The Glue Squad is sure getting into Fall mode. I love this being my first Fall with everyone. First and foremost, I must tell Chewy to relax. We have had quite a number of incidents at the beginning when I arrived. Now I can't give enough kisses all the time. You are in the right house for sure Chewy, to get lots of love and kindness, like was shown me and you will come around and soon no more incidents. I went around the lake yesterday on my walk and met Charlie. Charlie is a little dog and a really tough guy, but we made friends. A lot happened around the lake in the last month, much new smelling to investigate. And last, do you know what today is? It is hump day. That commercial with the camel just cracks me up. Have a GEM of a day all.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Good morning,
When I read the captions under the pictures today, I thought the one caption described the Glue Squad to a T. The Cosmos flowers planted together in a group interlock their leaves to support one another. That is what we do. We come together as a group and if one of us is in need of support, we band together to lift each other up. Who knew flowers had Glue Squads too. Hehehehehehehe
And speaking of lifting one of us up, I want to tell Chewy that so many people are against breeders but there are good breeders who breed for good temperament. Then there are some that don't care what they breed. And the same goes for owners. Some train their pets right and some don't which creates problems. And then there are rescue organizations and shelters that do the same thing. Some are very thorough and do all kinds of behavior testing and some don't bother and just send them out the door as quick as they can. So, whatever issues you have, it is not your fault. It is either the breeder, your previous owner or the shelter where you came from that didn't bother to inform James and Lucinda of your protective side. But fear not Chewy because you ended up with the people you were meant to be with. They will work you through things. Don't be discouraged. Just learn from them and keep trying to work it out.
We love you Chewy and you know James, Lucinda and Black Mamma think the world of you. I would say that is a whole ton of support headed in your direction
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good Morning F & S

Go ahead say it - go ahead - IT'S HUMP DAY :)

F & S the only cosmos we have at our house come in a fancy glass ;) However, they all have a fruit name - I just don't think they are the same thing. Do you think Laura and Martha drink them?? You'll have to check it out.

Mom didn't have a fun day yesterday and I had to be her nurse. She saw the hand doctor again and he gave her 2 shots right in the thumb joint and the other in her finger joint. She thought the last shot was bad in the palm of her hand but these were really bad. She came home and had to keep her hand in ice but that didn't help the swelling or the bruise. She is trying to avoid surgery and they have to keep giving her cortisone shots to take away the pain. If this doesn't work she is going to a pain management guy - more needles :(

I think I'll go ruin Sophie's day, I heard mom making her an appointment at the groomer for Friday- HAHA Sophie ;)

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
OK, so you had to say it; it’s hump day. Some think that a talking camel is really great but just stop and think, the GS has dogs, and cats, that use the computer. On top of that, they share information on the “net” so everyone stays informed. Such as: Fall is here in the south. It was down to 50 the other night which was great for me. Only problem with that is it then gets back up into the 80’s during the day. So much for the weather, now for the sports. We have some partial scores in; New York 14. Now for the local news. Kirby is about to loose his mind typing things like this! News “flash” just in. Daddy was changing his cloths; sorry I saw that. Remind me to close the door while I am at the computer.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Morning Girls & Glue Squad - I learned so much about cosmos this morning; maybe Mom will investigate them further for next year. I think they would look nice in her garden. Chewy, Ruby and Maddox is right, it takes time to adjust to strangers in your house; but with lots of love, hugs & kisses, you will be okay. I still get a little excited when someone comes into the house; but settle down when Mom or Dad talks to me. Everybody loves you :) . Ruby, Charlie is what kind of a dog? We are suppose to have summer like temperatures today, I thought it was officially fall; but we'll take it, no problem. Mom is headed to lunch with a friend today, so guess I'll keep Dad company for sure. Sophie, don't feel bad, I go to the spa Saturday. Hi to all my friends, back to the front door to patrol for now.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, OH! What a beautiful morning where you saw Laura picking some beautiful flowers in the new cutting garden! Sure looks like you 2 sweet girls were having lots of fun and so was Laura! Why didn't GK go out there with you? Bet he would have had fun, also! Hope you have another great day and I have to go to my great vet again this morning! He called Mom yesterday and would need to check my kidney and liver to make sure they are in good shape. My teeth are doing very well and I only eat delicious soft foods Mom fixes for me daily! I will let you know how everything turns out after my visit to the vet! Hope you all have a great day and stay safe! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Good morning ladies,
Learned a lot from today's lesson. Those are really pretty flowers. Mimi & I like them a bunch. At our house the cosmos only come in fancy glasses, too!
Hey there Chewy. Hang in there buddy. Lucinda, James and Black Mama are going to help you out. I'm sure of that. It took me many months and I'm still a guard dog. I am better though. I don't charge at little Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts anymore. I just bark & go back to bed when I see who it is. Granted, I'm a lot smaller than you, but I still give my "tough guy" attitude a try.
Have a great day Chewy and the rest of the gang.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hello Francesca, Sharkey, laura and glue squad buddies,
What pretty cosmos! They look great in all those colors! Sharkey is full of knowledge about plants. I am sure she know horse chestnuts can be used for moth proofing drawers and jewelry, now what to do with acorns???
Sorry, distracted by that squirrel.. Its Hump day!!! Chewy, we love you and hope you get settled in real quick. I took a long time to get used to my forever home, my second home is still the animal hospital where I got rescued. The glue squad is there for you all the way Chewy.
Ruby, did you see any birds on your walk by the lake? Dudley, hope you have a good report from the vet. Missy Chow, hope you have fun patrolling the front door in the sunshine. Zoe, hope your Mom's hand feels better soon.
Mom is taking me to a horse farm for an overnight. What is a Horse??? Maybe I will go ask Jimmy, he reads all the time. woofs and high paws to all,
    Abby the pug/peke/frenchie

  • Me and the Cheweenies are here for ya Chewy! Mom says to have Lucinda call her. She has some things for you to try that are starting to work for me. I just want you to remember THIS IS NOT YOUR FAULT!!! There are some really nasty humans out there that do not deserve to have us in their miserable lives! Just remember how lucky you are to have James and Lucinda in your life now and it WILL get better!
Time for a nap...I've waited for the Weenies to get it nice and warm in our blankets on the couch and now I'll go crash their party...here I come Chloe and Sophie...hehehe
    Mr. Mayer

  • ..what pretty flowers..thanks fellow glue squaders for the encouragement..Lucinda is in a tail-spin..her dr. just up and quit...and it took her a long time to find him and that was several years ago..the office just says too bad..find another provider...yeah, 66 yrs. old a host of problems and now this...she said something about getting in bed and covering her head up and not coming out..sounds fun to me!!..Bad back and arthritis..she wonders if working all those years was worth it...deep down she knows it was..she is just disgusted today..so I better cheer her up with a big lick..later, Chewy..p.s. Black mama slept on the back porch last nite..i think the little rat is trying to weasle her way in the house..but that is okay..there appears to be room enough for all of us!

  • Hi Y'all,
Cosmos are beautiful and provide long-lasting knockout color for arrangements. They also plant these along the interstates here. They are beautiful, but tough!
Zoe, all I can say is ouch! Hope your mom can avoid surgery, but ouch!
    Kirby, you are so funny!
Chewy, I've been trying to send good thoughts your way all day. Don't get discouraged! Our past ghosts are bound to come out sometimes. That's part of the package when our humans take us in and they know it. They are ready to help us through it. I've gotten much better but Mis can't be sure that the ghosts are all gone. I bit, more like nipped a State Ag employee. I became the bad dog then, and many people knew about my reputation. Really, I'm not that bad. She swung a clipboard, that was all it took and the ghost came back. (She didn't swing it at me or anybody, just swung it.) The medical bills were paid and Mis dealt with animal control, but my reputation was already written. It's good that our pack leaders are there to protect us, and that's what they do. You have great pack leaders in Lucinda and James. Trust them! They are there to take care of you, so you can relax and just be a dog. By the way, there's always enough love for one more. Welcome Black Momma!
    See Ya Later

  • What a beautiful bounty of flowers. I'm a pink girl, so they really caught my eye.

Frannie and Sharkey never disappoint in the knowledge department!

  • Morning Girls,

Sorry I haven't been blogging :( Mom is having work done in the bathroom so she has been out early and my computer time is limited.
Those flowers sure look pretty. They remind me of the flowers I pulled out of moms garden earlier in the summer :)
Things here in NJ are pretty quiet. I have been trying to stay out of trouble ;) Hot weather is back so I am not too happy about that.
Hope you all have a great day :)

    Love
    Chloe xx

PS I am posting on Thursday but this blog is from Wednesday. I didn't see a post from you girls for today.

Zoe I hope your Mama's hand feels better. I hope everyone is doing well too!
