What A Year For Apples!

Posted by F&S

Well, it's definitely apple season at the farm.  In fact, we Frenchies and GK drove with Laura and Sanu to an old orchard on the farm.  The trees were loaded!  There are plenty of apples for eating, baking, apple sauce, and cider.  There are also plenty for the donkeys and horses, too!

Francesca, there certainly are a lot of apples falling from the trees.

Sharkey, apparently it's another great year for the apple crop.

Laura and Sanu are picking buckets and buckets of apples.

Laura is happy that there are so many and the picking is easy!

These are very old trees and it's difficult to know just what kind this is, but it's similar to a McIntosh, a general all-purpose apple. Those spots come right off with a good washing.

Laura, that apple sure looks good. Do you suppose we could have a taste, please?

Yum!!! Apples are a super healthy treat for dogs. They contain calcium, vitamin K, vitamin C, and pectin, which is soluble fiber. And they're low in calories.

Thank you so much, Laura! I can't get enough apple slices. They're so yummy!

It doesn't look like GK appreciates apples as much as we do. In fact, he doesn't seem interested at all. Oh well, to each, his own. We wonder how many Glue Squadders like apples?

Sanu is still picking.

These buckets fill up fast. I heard something about Martha making applesauce. A little unsweetened applesauce would be good mixed in with our food.

We have a full load, ladies! Let's head back.

  • Good morning everyone,
Apples are alright but I prefer filet mignon. Hehehehehehehe
Another fresh week. I bet Lynn had a nice Meal at her daughter's houseand I am sure Ruby wasn't lacking for treats. Brutus, I never did run like the wind. I am more of a slacker like Max. Zoe, how was your visit with Nicole? Rebel, are Mimi and Papa back home yet? Dudley, Missy Chow, Kirby, Kitty and Baby Favor, how was your weekend? We know Chloe was involved in telephone work. By the way, I heard she was just trying to protect her family from telemarketers. Hehehehehehehe. James Dean, that was a great poem you did for Lynn. Did Abby help? Dixie Boy are you all rested up from your weekend of running around with George? Chewy, bath yet? Black Mamma, are you getting a bath too? Riley, how did school go? Where Martha and Lucy there to cheer you on? Well Glue Squad, I hope everyone had a good weekend. I know I did.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • I'm with GK, I'm not much of an apple girl. However, if chocolate grew on trees.... :)

With that being said, I do love Autumn and especially in NH. The leaves are already changing colors. There is a crisp feeling in the air. Pumpkins, haystacks and scarecrows are dotted through out the city.

I'm sure we'll see the big apple press in the near future!

    Happy Monday!

  • Good Monday Morning everyone!!!!
Max, here. I love apples too, Francesca and Sharkey. In fact, I had a few slices last night with Mom and Dad. Some even had peanut butter. Yummo!
Brutus here. Apples? No thank you. I'm like GK. Meat. I like meat.
How about those Bengals. Yes, we are in shock as well. They beat the Steelers and now Green Bay. What???!!!
We started the weekend out with a really humid Friday. Then the rain and cooler temps came on Saturday. Four inches of rain! Now the temps are in the 40's and I'm loving' it! (This still Brutus...Maxie went back to bed and is cuddled up with Dad and his blanket.)
We hope everyone had a great, happy and safe weekend.
Must be off to check out the patio and yard beyond.
    Pugs and kisses to all.
    Brutus and Max.

  • Thanks Frenchies! The apples here in southeastern Ontario are abundant this season too, after a couple of really bad years. You can pick-you-own for 50 cents a pound! Looking forward to taking my four boys out picking soon.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Would you just look at all those apples. Daddy said it looked like a “bumper” crop this year. Now I looked at each picture real close and did not see any bumpers on them at all. Could it be that ole Daddy is pulling ole Kirby’s leg a little? I don’t think bumpers grow on trees anyway. Not a good weekend for me. I have been having trouble with my left eye and my vet checked on it on Friday. I have lost the sight in my left eye and may loose the sight in my right unless these eye drops work. I’ll know more on this Friday when the pressure inside my eye is checked again.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello Girls,G.K. & all my Glue Squad Buddies,
I love seeing all your apple trees in the orchards, but as for me, I am not a fan, except......Max this peanut butter on an apple slice sounds appealing. I will try that, otherwise, no, I am not a fan. Our Colorado apple orchards took a big hit this spring with the freezing temps and late snows. Not many apples, our tree, none.

Maddox, I just dido what you said. How was your weekend all? It has been the "birthday season" at our house celebrating Mom's birthday. She says she is carrying it through tonight and the Bronco's game. I am for that!! It has been treats, and food and flowers and presents galore. Mom said she has enjoyed being spoiled and thanks all our Glue Squad buddies for the birthday wishes.

Started raining last night and I saw it this morning and turned around and went back to bed. My nursing career is lightening up as Dad is progressing in his recovery. 3 weeks tomorrow---yahooo Dad. He even takes my reins on the walks again and is getting better daily.

Everyone have a GEM of a day!!!!!

    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, WOW! Those apples sure do look great and how fun that you sweet girls got to eat some already! Laura and Sanu sure were having fun picking so many apples and I know that Martha loves to make apple sauce, apple pies etc. for everyone to enjoy! I wonder what caused those spots on some of those apples and it's great they can be cleaned well! Sure was fun to see GK again today and I'm kind of like him about not eating apples but I might like apple sauce! Your weather sure looked good and I wish our rain and wind would go away very soon! Have a great day! Maddox, we had a great sunny day on Saturday and then the rain and wind came on Sunday and knocked some of Moms tomato plants down-darn! Gail, hope your weather stays good for a longer time for you to enjoy! Max, glad you liked apples and Brutus, I'm kind of like you, also! Angela, glad you like apples and 50 cents a pound sounds great to Mom! Kirby, so sorry about your eye trouble and hope you don't lose more sight! My prayers are with you, buddy! Hope to hear from more of you real soon! Love Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hi Y'all,
Apples, as I have stated before are my favorite!!!! Wish Mis had trees here, but then again, I'd just gorge myself. We do have grapes and even though we shouldn't eat them, we get caught sneaking into them often. Mis has gone as far as putting up a temporary fence to keep us out. That worked for about a day when I undermined it. HAHAHAH! Can't keep me out! Oh, and pecans. I love me some pecans too, but the squirrels are stripping them before they get ready! I try to control them but they're too many. Four trees and we'll be buying pecans again this year. Which means we don't get many to eat. Bummer! We've got persimmons too, but I don't think anyone likes those except the raccoons and possums, of which I have taken care of. Still working on getting rid of the groundhogs though. So much to do. And George is of no help unless it's to unstuff the ottoman. Mis left us alone for about 4 hours on Saturday and George tore a corner out of the ottoman. Puppy! At least it wasn't the feather pillows! (That's what Zeke and Izzy did when they first came).
Kirby, we'll be praying that you can keep the rest of your sight. That's a bit scary but your Mom and Dad can be your seeing eye humans. I'm sure they will take good care of ole Kirby.
And like Brutus and Max, we are enjoying these nice cool days. We got a bit of rain Saturday night/Sunday morning but it's bright and beautiful this morning! Time to go do some more yard work! I'll be reading about the rest of you later!
    Have A Doggy Good Day!
    Dixie Boy

  • :-) Apple specialists F&S, those sure look yummy...you're such good helpers! Hope when you eat a piece of Apple that there aren't any seeds in them...they're poisonous to dogs and really anyone that ingests too many - to think I use to eat every seed :-(
Sounds like Chiquita Lynn had a great Mexican meal prepared for her. I make lots of Mexican food with Puerto Rican infusion ;-)
Kitty knows something is going on again she follows me around when I set suitcases out...I hate leaving her, it's not easy because she will not come to anyone except my sister and sis has been sick, so hopefully things work out.
Hope all is well with everyone and that Kirby's eye will be OK
Got to run and get blood work done and get Kitty food, most importantly I Need Coffee!!

    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Hello F,S, GK and all the GS buddies:
Sorry we missed commenting on Friday, Mom was off and we were helping in the garden all day. Firstly, a happy belated birthday to Lynn, hope your day was amazing. I am Riley boy, and I want to tell you all about my first day at school. It was raining cats and dogs on Saturday, but it is inside, so no problem. We got there and of course I made friends with a beautiful chocolate Lab named George right away. He sat beside me, but the teacher said we weren't supposed to be having play time, school was serious stuff. OK, school went pretty good, I was on the "big dog" side of the hall, and had to sit at the very front cause I'm kind of loud and proud and like to bark at anything that is of interest to me. Mom had brought lots of treats, and since I am very food motivated it worked well. We did sit, look at me, and some recalls. It was hard work, but I liked it and it really burned some energy. I know exactly how George feels - young dogs like us, we have energy to burn and its sometimes hard to keep us quiet and content. I can take a chewie (rawhide bone, not Chewy the gluesquadder) and have it chewed up over the course of a day or so. Anyways, I think its going to be good for me and I'm looking forward to continuing next Saturday. They say they have a sport for dogs like me called Flyball - I think I'd like to learn, I told Mom to sign me up! As for apples, I think I'd like them, I'll eat ANYTHING so Mom says she'll let me try them soon.
Well gotta go, Love and bounces to all, Martha, Miz Lu and Riley boy (A-1 student).

  • Good Morning F & S

I LOVE apples!!! This time of year mom is slicing a few every night for our snack - OH SO GOOD. The Labs enjoy them as well. My mom is such a geek that the other night she sliced 4 different kinds and she had an apple tasting with dad. Really??? At least she shared :)

Wow do these weekends go by too fast. Saturday mom and I did some clean up in the yard then hit the kitchen for some cooking. We made New England clam chowder, cupcakes, cookies and a cake. Sunday we had Nicole for the afternoon. Mom let her decorate the cupcakes which meant lots of sprinkles on the floor for me to lick up ;) Then they made candy apples. What a mess that was! Red stuff all over the place. I wasn't fond of those apples the candy was too hard for my little teeth.

Ruby I'm glad to hear your mom had a nice birthday weekend.

Well I'm going to take a snooze in my comfy Martha Stewart bed it's chilly out there today.

  • This is for Kirby. I am so sorry to hear about your eye problem Kirby. It sounds like Glaucoma. We had a chow one time that got some kind of infection and ended up getting secondary glaucoma in her one eye. They gave some kind of shot in that eye that deadened that eye and she had to get drops in the other eye to prevent glaucoma in the good eye. She lived for many years with only one eye she could see with she adjusted and did fine. I am hopeful you will do the same. I am going to think real positive thoughts for you buddy
    Love ya,
    Maddox

  • Hi Girls & GK,

I'm not a apple fan but I do love grabbing one and running off into the yard if mom happens to drop one. I just like when she chases me. :) Well, I got another animial Friday night. My mom and brother Jimmy were calling me in for bed and I brought them a nice big muskrat. Dropped it right on the back deck. :) Mom went screaming in the house for Dad yelling "Chloe has another animial" ;) Dad and brother Jimmy came out with a bucket because the thing died on me while we were playing. That always happens. Just when things start to get fun the openent dies :) Then... Dad threw it over the deck into the woods rather then put it in a bag and take it to the trash like mom told him to do and we had buzzards flying overhead this morning. Boy are they ugly. I might have to try and get one of those. LOL
And you are so right Maddox... those darn telemarketers. Mom is always hanging up on them so I figured if they can't call she won't get angry :)

Well, I hope everyone has a great day. Mom should be home soon to take me for my lunch time walk. She always takes me after dinner but she now takes me at lunch too :) I just love walking with mom especially on these nice days!

    Have a great day everyone!

    Love
    Chloe xx

  • ..First off, Kirby, sorry about your eye..but that will not slow you down one bit..Cora-Belle was Partially blind for awhile then completely blind and she raced around with the best of them...can't keep a good dog down!...apples..yuk, me and Black Mama and the tribe let the deer and elk have them...Lucinda is worried I have been de-barked...she is livid,,who does stuff like that to a dog?...one of her bar patrons did that to his dog years ago and she refused to him serve after that and still doesn't talk to him when she sees him at the local grocery store..Seahawks won again!..I am beginning to like football games..get to sit next to James and he pets me the whole time while we watch the game...must find Lucinda and go out and patrol the farm/ranch..later, Chewy

  • Hi Francesca & Sharkey,
I wish I had a lot of apple trees like that too. Fresh, hand-picked apples -- how wonderful! Thanks for sharing your little excursion with us.

  • Yet another thing you inherited from me, Francesca Baby-- I LOVE apples. I also love carrots and pretty much anything that Dad gives me in the fruit and vegetable department. Millie and Roxy might eat a slice of apple or two, but that's about it.
Sorry to be so quick, but Mom is out of town at the Shar Pei National Specialty, so we only got to talk briefly so she could transcribe my answer. She comes home next week, so maybe then I can catch up with everyone!!
    A bientot!
