Our Pumpkin Patch

Posted by Francesca

We Frenchies decided to go and visit the pumpkin patch and see how things are growing there.  Once again, Sharkey really impressed me with her vast knowledge of things.

There are plenty of blossoms on the vines. Franny, did you know that many people love eating the blossoms of summer squash? I'm told that they're excellent stuffed with seasoned ricotta cheese and then fried until crispy.

The first flowers to appear on cucurbits are usually male, which means they do not form fruit. Their purpose is to furnish pollen for bees to pollinate the female flowers.

Once the bees visit the male flowers, the flowers drop off the plant naturally and wither away, like these.

The female flower has an ovary directly behind the petals and once it is pollinated by the bees, it swells to form a fruit, like this one. Isn't that fascinating?

If the female flowers bloom before there are male flowers to supply pollen, they would just dry up or produce small fruits that drop off and die. Nature is just amazing to take care of things that way!

Wow, Sharkey! I guess those bees have been very busy in this patch because I'm finding quite a few pumpkins growing.

This is the same patch where the hardneck garlic was planted and Ryan had to wait for that harvest before planting the pumpkins.

Because he planted late in the season, he chose smaller varieties of pumpkins and gourds that will mature faster than the larger types.

Another interesting thing about cucurbita is that they have tendrils that twist around objects for climbing and to help anchor the vine and protect it from the wind.

After harvesting, there are sometimes dried, brown tendrils on the stem, giving the pumpkin even more character. This is considered a bonus by many.

  • Good morning my wonderful friends,
My my, what a weekend. Pumpkins growing everywhere, birthday parties, road trips, visits to the beach, Kirby's dad got an A+ and James is doing better. Ruby's dad Will goes for surgery today so lets give real positive thoughts to him, I could go on and on with all that happened that I know about. I can just imagine the good comments that will come today. We worked on the kennel the whole weekend. Karen said it is Labor Day weekend and that I's a holiday to celebrate Work so what better way to celebrate it but to work. I think her mind gets dizzy once in a while. I would have had a nice picnic and had friends over and not even mentioned work. But that is me. I did go on a biscuit round up though so it was still a fun time here. Ok Glue Squad , report in. I can't wait to hear from everyone.
    Love to all,
    Maddox
PS - Karen said Thank You to everyone for your nice comments about Scott, my human brother. She said she would pass along your comments to him when she talks to him again.

  • Good Morning F & S

Pumpkins, pumpkins and more pumpkins :) That means fall is just around the corner. I'm ready for pumpkin pie and lots of crisp apples - YUM. Mom is on an apple kick so every night now we have a sliced apple after dinner. I love apples and especially love when she dips it in peanut butter :)

Ruby's dad is having an operation this morning so we need to keep them all in our prayers. I hate that "C" stuff and so many people have it these days. Mom said it's because of all the chemicals we eat the air quality.

We had a big party on Sunday for my Aunt and Uncle they both turned 50. Mom was a little under the weather yesterday morning I think it was from all the cocktails - she was drinking lots of gingerale and walking really slow.

    Have a great day everyone!!

Sure was nice to hear from so many of you great buddies last Friday and nice to hear from Obie Jones, a Frenchie, also! Sure hope you had a great Birthday on Sunday sweet Kitty! My prayers are with your Dad, Will, today Ruby and hope he is doing better real soon! Can't wait for your Birthday real soon, James Dean! Was great to hear from you this morning, Maddox! Will check back later to hear from the rest of you buddies! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Thanks for an interesting blog, Francesca. I didn't know squash about pumpkins until your informative discourse! Bye!

  • Hello F,S,GK and all the Glue Squad buddies:
Well, what an interesting blog about the pumpkin patch. Fall is coming, today we woke up and it was nice and cool, a crisp breeze blowing, just heavenly! We love the fall like weather, and usually go up to a country market to get our pumpkins - this year we are back in the City and will have lots of kids for Halloween. Riley boy will be so excited that he just won't know where to put himself when they come to the door. We'll decorate the house with lots of pumpkins and maybe, just maybe some of the Halloween candy will drop on the floor so that we can snap it up!
Everyone, lets get cards out to Lynn and Will, he will have a long recovery at home so cards from all the GS buddies will help brighten his days. We are all sending good karma and healing thoughts their way. Ruby girl, you are going to be in charge of the C&C department at your house, but I know you are up for the job. Will check back later to see what all the other GS members think.
Love and beardie bounces, Martha, Miz Lu and Riley boy.

  • Thanks Francesca and Sharkey for the Great Pumpkin blog! We are feeling smarter every day we read it!
First things first, Ruby, please tell your Dad, Will, that we are thinking about him and praying for him and your family. It's not a good time for anyone when a loved one goes to the hospital.
We had a quiet, but good weekend. Dad grilled ribs yesterday, yummo! That's about it, folks. Nothing new to report today.
    Pugs and kisses.

  • Hi Y'all!
It's getting that time again. Pumpkins galore will be at the Farmers Market! There are all kinds there, or at least I've heard. Don't get to go myself. Mis loves this one stand that sells every kind imaginable. Many of which I'm sure Francesca knows about. The official Doggy Horticulturist! I love it!!
Not feeling much like fall here in NC. Terrible humidity, and we started out with a thunderstorm this morning. Mis said tomorrow will feel better. Can't wait!
Saying our prayers for Ruby's Dad today. Hoping everything turns our well!
It sounds like everyone, so far had a wonderful weekend. Like Karen said Maddox, Labor Day is for laboring. At least it was for my humans. They seem to like this self-employment kind of work. You know, the kind where the owners labor on holidays so the employees get to take the day off. What a great bunch to work for!! I'm not sure they think it's all that wonderful though!?!
Okay, I've got to go find George.

  • Pumpkin time! :)

My favorite time of the year. Back in the 70's I had tendrils hanging from my hair. :) Was the fad back then.

School resumes tomorrow, so this Mommy will be smiling and quite possibly kicking up her heels!

    Happy Tuesday to all..

  • ..Hello glue squad buddies..first of all, we are thinking of Will today and know all will be fine...second, thank you all my dear glue squaders for the cards for my buddy James and Lucinda..you are all so special...third..Ivan and Ivanka are en route to Montana as we speak..a big truck pulled up in the yard yesterday with Montana plates..Ivan and Ivanka went crazy with joy..out stepped their human brother..seems he did not know that his step mother gave them away..so he came to check on them..he bought them for his dad and clearly loved them and they vice-versa..so after a long reunion, we could clearly see they should be with him on his ranch..we are happy for the naughty shepherds and he was happy that we took such care of them...life..you just never know..so I am back to running the farm/ranch with my tribe...missed chatting with you fellow glue squaders..over and out, love, Black Mama and the tribe
