Exploring The Woods - Part Two

Posted by F&S

As you may recall from yesterday's blog, we Frenchies headed out to the woods all decked out in some of our new wardrobe from the Martha Stewart Pets line at PetSmart.  And as promised, here is part 2 of our woodland adventure.

Sharkey, let's pick up where we left off yesterday. We are sitting on this rock in the woods contemplating all of the great beauty that surrounds us. It's so very peaceful.

Francesca, I'm hearing something. What do you suppose it is? Should we take cover?

Relax, Sharkey, it's just Betsy out exercising one of the horses.

A horse has four big heavy feet, so I think it's best that we sit in the Kawasaki while Betsy passes by.

Hi Betsy, we were just out enjoying these splendid woods. I guess you have the same idea.

Sasa, you must be happy that cooler weather is on its way. We felt a bit chilled, so we put on some new outfits from the Martha Stewart Pets line at PetSmart.

Don't you think I look adorable wearing my red belted coat with faux fur trim on the hood?

Well, Sasa and Betsy, it's been really great seeing you in passing, but we really must be on our way. Besides, I'm sure you have a schedule to keep.

Franny, stop the Kawasaki! I want to look at something.

There is something really worth exploring on this big rock.

Lichens are really cool organisms that have special adaptations which permit them to withstand extremes of moisture and temperature. When moisture is present, the lichen grows. When things dry up, the lichen goes dormant.

What's this? An earthworm! Earthworms’ bodies are made up of ring-like segments called annuli. These segments are covered in setae, or small bristles, which the worm uses to move and burrow.

Sharkey, do you see what I see in the Christmas tree field?

It's a flock of wild turkeys! I bet a turkey wouldn't hesitate eating that worm, just like a coyote wouldn't hesitate eating a turkey. It's a cruel world out there. I've had enough for one day. Let's go home and take a nap.

Delightful story! There is a chill in the air here in NH! I turned on the heater this morning!

  • Good morning everyone,
You girls should have your own TV show. GK could be the host and you girls could strut your stuff with all your outfits. The show could be called Project Frenchie Runway.
Well Glue Squad, weather, football, golf, canning and cooking and artwork and running after critters were most of the topics from what I just read from the previous post. It was nice to have Pam post again. Chewy, you come when called? I am impressed cause you haven't been on the ranch too long. Ruby, I am so glad the flooding is not in your area but I feel sorry for all the animals and people that it is affecting.
The deck is calling me. It is telling me that it is 49 degrees out right now. My kind of weather. And it is saying to lay on it to warm it up with my fur. Hehehehehehehe.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good morning ladies, Sasa and Betsy,
Ooooo, a worm! I just love worms. I like them best all dried up so I can rub my neck on it and roll on it too.
I like Betsy's hat. Just sayin'.
Hey, Chewy, good job treeing the coons! I am also impressed that you come when Lucinda calls you.
Well, I'm in the dog house. Mimi & Papa thought it was funny that I had a party with my toys the other night, but they also discovered I pee peed in the dining room again. I just don't know what comes over me. It's been months since I did it last time. Maybe it's the cool weather, I don't know.....
Well, I'm off to my morning nap. Have a great day everybody.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, WOW! Not only did you two sweet, beautiful girls look gorgeous in your great PetSmart new Martha coats, but you sure did have fun seeing Betsy and Sasa while traveling in the Kawasaki! How fun that you also found the lichens on that big rock! Mom says we have some lichens on the branches of our pear tree! It was fun to see the big earthworm and the wild turkeys, also! Hope you have some more great fun and be sure to hug GK and Martha for me! Hi Chewy, I was sure you might have had some of that lightning and thunder storm because you are just south of us! We finally got some sunshine yesterday and that was nice! Say Hi to Black Mama and your family! Gail, I noticed on our weather report in the newspaper that you were down to about 34 degrees at night! Hope you stay warmer! Maddox, I love your new idea of F,S,&GK having a TV Show-Great! Was so nice to finally read all of the rest of you buddies comments that I finally read yesterday! Hope you all have a great day! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
After seeing this blog I am thinking like Maddox. I love the Project Runway Frenchie idea, and in addition I think you girls need to make a wall calendar and 365 day desk calendar, and all proceeds could benefit animals in need. The Wall Calendar could be called Francesca, Sharkey, G.K. and THE GLUE SQUAD. We could all be on it. The desk calendar could be Francesca, Sharkey, G.K. and friends, and have 365 days filled with everyone on the farm and US and all the animals on the farm and US and you modeling all your outfits, and US. 365 days on a desk calendar would be enough to cover everyone and everything. I liked you girls and Sasa and Betsy. Even the worm had a good shot. We have been finding so many worms on the sidewalk, Weston just walks out and picks them up and in to the turtles they go. Yucko, they have weird tastes, but then who am I to say, I eat squash leaves. Everyone have a GEM of a day.
    Love & licks,
    Ruby

  • Hello Francesca, Sharkey and Betsy,
Such warm and wonderful outfits on you girls! Certainly stylish for a woodland exploring trip.
I liked seeing the turkey flock too, we have adult turkeys, and turkettes that sometime walk across the lawn from their hideout in the field.
Maddox, we have the same temperature here, 49, good sleeping weather and just perfect for Mom's running.
Chewy, its great you are patrolling the ranch and protecting Black Mama and her feral kitty friends.
On a very sad note, the cat shelter where Mom volunteers periodically had a fire. Most of the cat residents were rescued heroically by the staff, courageous manager and firemen. We are very thankful for all the brave people who helped out our cat friends. Mom worked there for many years and a piece of her heart is there. We are very hopeful the shelter will stay strong and rebuild. When they are ready Mom and her friends will help out.
I am so very thankful for all my Glue Squad friends and send my love and purrrs to all,
    James Byron Dean

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Modeling again today I see. You two sure do work hard. Hehehehe I’m sure that running through the woods is a hard job. I mean, all that stopping and posing for the camera and things. Sure glad I’m not in that kind of a business. Just give me the woods; that’ll be all I need. I had to ‘go’ out last night and as luck would have it; rain. By the time I got back to the house it had stopped. It only rained for, like, five seconds. Just enough to make me hurry back inside. After that insult, I didn’t sleep well at all. Now I can catch up this morning; nap time.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello F&S, GK and the GS buddies:
Wow, what a fashion shoot you girls had. Quite the stunning outfits, and hey if it keeps you ladies warm and toasty we are all for it. Riley boy went to the groomer's last weekend and OMG, he now looks like a rat terrier! Mom didn't know what to say, definitely not what she was expecting. I think he will have to have one of those all in one coats that covers your back legs. All I can say is that the poor guy better hurry up and start growing his fur again!
Well, we got frost on the roofs today, weather here is glorious, very cool and very sunny. Pool is now steaming so Mom says its time to close it up for the season. She always tries to keep it open until her birthday passes, I think we'll just make it this year! Miz Lu is the only one with a large hairy coat left, I think we are going to try a different groomer this time, no more heart attacks for Mom when she picks us up. Riley starts school on Saturday, we hope he'll calm down long enough to listen to the teacher, here is hoping!
Gotta get going, everyone is sitting outside in the sunshine and communing with nature this morning!
Love and beardie bounces, Martha, Miz Lu and Riley boy.

  • Good Morning F & S

Sharkey you look like you are wearing a moon suit you made me laugh this morning. Get that outfit off and burn it!!! Franny is probably laughing at you also telling you look cute. You don't see her butt in that silly outfit. Betsy and Sasa thought you were an alien especially after you were checking out the Lichens! I think the only good thing about your suit is that the ticks can't bite through it - call it your tick suit :)

    Zoe

  • Good morning everyone!
Yes, we finally got computer time. We really do need to figure out how to turn this thing on by ourselves.
First of all, Francesca and Sharkey you certainly are looking good! I, Max, would love to have the coat, not so much the ski suit...how does one do the "business" wearing that? As for me, Brutus, naaa...keep the coats, my nature coat is thick enough. In fact, I heard Mom calling Denise, my groomer, for an appointment. Guess I'll be washed, the fur cut and fluffed soon. As least I'll be cooler.
Ruby, we are praying for all the animals and people in Colorado who are affected by the flooding. Just horrible.
Jimmy Dean, we are also saying a pray for all the cats and people affected by the fire at the cat shelter.
Also prayers go out to everyone at the Navy Yard.
Goodness, our prayer list just continues to grow.
    Such sadness in the world.
But....the good news!!!! The Bengals actually beat those Steelers Monday night!!!!! Good job Bengals!!!!
The weather is great today. The windows are wide open and the patio is calling our names.
Pugs and kisses to everyone in the Glue Squad world!
    Brutus and Max

  • Way to go Chewie...tree those coons! And what a good boy to come back to Lucinda when she calls you!! Sophie and I come back to mom when we darn well feel like it. Sometimes we just stop, sit down and wait for her to catch up. It's funny to watch her try and walk fast with her brace on. Saw our 1st geese of the season this morning. Thought those big grey things were going to swoop down and carry us away, but Mayer came charging in and saved the day!
Hope everyone has a great day. Stay dry and warm!
Chloe, the Queen Cheweenie...and those other guys too

  • Hi there,
Thanks for your very interesting lesson on lichens and earthworms. And yes, you do look very cute in those new fall fashions from Martha's pet line!!
