Do You Know About Colchicum?

Posted by Sharkey

Walking around the farm yesterday, Francesca was confused when thought she saw spring flowers blooming.  It is, after all, autumn.  As it turns out, these particular flowers do bloom in the fall, bringing beautiful bright color to a fading landscape.

Sharkey, I thought it was autumn, but what are crocuses doing blooming at this time of year? Aren't crocuses a springtime flower?

Technically, yes, Francesca. However, these crocus lookalikes are actually a fall-flowering bulb called colchicum, or meadow saffron.

What's so special about colchicum is that they bloom just as the rest of the flower border begins to fade and the trees are turning their autumn colors.

There are single-flowered colchicums, like these, that produce cup-shaped blooms.

There are also double flowered forms with star-shaped blooms.

Franny, their flowers range in size from 2-inch blossoms to giant ones measuring 8-inches across!

I love this lilac color, but they also come in shades of white through magenta.

If you want to grow colchicum, plant the corms in early fall 4 to 6-inches deep and about 8-inches apart. They like a sunny well-drained area.

Flowers rise directly out of the soil with strap-shaped leaves appearing the following spring.

Franny, don't even think about eating colchicums. As beautiful as they may be, colchicum corms are highly toxic and should be kept away from children and pets.

  • Hello ladies,
Pretty flowers. Here we go again. They are toxic. How do people know this? However they find this stuff out, I am glad they do because it saves lots of animals from getting sick.
Speaking of color in the fall, I like when the leaves change color. There are so many vibrant colors. I wish leaves would stay all those pretty colors all year round.
Well, another week wrapping up. What is everyone doing for the weekend? Karen said we have to button up the yard. Stuff has to be put away. Snow shovels, rock salt and stuff like that has to be put in strategia areas. That is fine with me. It is nice and cool out. I will stay out there all day long to supervise. It is very tiring watching people work all day. Hehehehehehehe
    Everyone, enjoy the weekend.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good Friday morning Francesca, Sharkey, GK and all our Glue Squad friends!
As always, we have learned something new. Colchicum corms....say that three times fast! hahaha
After reading Martha's blog we thought you two would be supervising the apple cider press. Did Uncle Carlos and Pete pull a fast one while you were out smelling the colchicum? Whhhhhaaaatttttt????
We want to wish Roxy a hap, hap, happy 2nd birthday! We hope you get lots of treats and hugs and presents today.
Mom wants to thank everyone who wished her a happy work anniversary. She said her manager recognized her 25 years during a staff meeting...everyone applauded. They gave her a very nice gift and a 25 year pin and yes! there was CAKE. Can you beleive that Dad stopped by and she give him a piece of that cake and he. ate. every. bite! Didn't save any for us. Too bad we are don't chew shoes anymore. Anyways Mom said she saved back another big piece and she will share when she comes home this morning. She's our favorite right now.
We hope everyone has great plans for this weekend.
The weather here is suppose to beautiful so we are planning for lots of outside time.
    Pugs and kisses to everyone!!
    Brutus and Max
p.s. Speaking of birthdays....we noticed that GK's birthday is not listed on the Official Glue Squad Birthday List. What's up with that? Maddox? Surely you know his birthday? Right?

  • Good Morning F & S

Very pretty flowers but you better enjoy them now because pretty soon they will be covered with leaves. Leaves are starting to come down at our house which means the pool will be covered soon. I guess summer really is over.

I'm so happy it's Friday mom plans on being home all weekend :) Sunday is my dad's birthday so I'm sure mom will be making all his favorite snacks while he is watching football. I'll be sitting right next to him giving him my cute feed me a piece face so I can enjoy the snacks as well, works every time ;)

    Have a great weekend everyone!!

    Zoe

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Well it looks like the weekend is about here. I think that my Daddy will be watching football tomorrow afternoon with me. The “Dogs” are playing and I want to see how they manage to carry that football. Daddy says that they even “pass” that football. I am going to find out just how they do that without thumbs. I’ll fill you in on Monday of what I find out. The “Dogs” are going to play some “Tigers” tomorrow afternoon. I don’t know about you, but I would stay away from a cat that big. Have a good, and safe, weekend all.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • :-) F&S you look lovely sitting next to that burst of lavender color...I have been wanting to get these flowers but since they need lots of sun, it won't work. I think animals pretty much know what plants aren't good for them.
Roxy may you have a Woofnerful Birthday with lots of treats, love and happy time ;-) Zoe wish your daddie a Happy upcoming Birthday! :-)
Ruby hope you have gotten used to your booties, it took a while for my grandogs to get used to them as well, they looked like they were high-stepping at first. Hello to your human dad and momma. I'm happy you weweed on the grass ;-) good dog!

Got to pack for our trip, auntie is coming over to take care of Kitty...
DW-GS friends have a wonderful weekend.

    Till later,
    delia & Kitty =^, ,^=

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
I am like Delia, you look marvelous against the beautiful lavender of the flowers. Only flowers blooming in our yard now, are mums. Abby and Jimmy e-mailed me good luck in my boots, and guess what they called me, Miss Ruby Slippers. I love it!! The name might make it easier to wear them----NOT!!! Kirby good luck at the Doctor's today on your eyes--it was today, right? And Roxy, Happy, Happy Birthday and many more....It is raining today and a great day for Chili. It is in the works and card making also. Mom is working on some beautiful Fall cards and is drawing blanks on the leaf poems of her youth. I call them brain farts. Hehehehehehe If anyone has any good ideas for poems on Fall, please e-mail them to me, Miss Ruby Slippers, and I can take the credit for helping Mom with you of course. We are going to watch the Broncos play the Eagles on Sunday. Zoe, I know you and I will have front row seats. Go Broncos!!!!! Weatherman says there might even be snow. OMG!!! Can Eagles play in the snow? Mom says yes, as they were raised in snow country. We will see, probably will be sunny and 100 the way the weather can change. Have a GEM of a weekend all and be sure and wish your Dad a grand birthday from Ruby, Zoe.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Hello Francesca, Sharkey, Kitty and glue squad buddies,
Sounds great to have pretty colchium flowers blooming in the fall. We have three colors of mums out by the kitchen window, very nice! Lots of great pics today, we like number ten the best!
Happy Birthday to Roxy and hope you get special biscuits and treats! Happy Birthday to Zoe's papa and hope you get lots of great football plays and snacks. Zoe will help clean up the crumbs... hehehehe. Happy work anniversary to Max and Brutus's Mom!!!
Kirby, we think you are sports code fluent now... tigers vs. dogs, good stuff. Rebel, that skull sweater sounds great!! Kitty, are you ready for your risky business dance with Mom away??? Mom bought little pumpkins yesterday and we are working on Halloween crafts, love all the crafts and spooky ideas. Maddox, hope you get some rest this weekend. Dudley, what are you doing? Missy Chow, have you any fall walks planned? Abby investigated our garden today and we still have lots of cherry tomatoes.
I love birdwatching in this season from my window.. many many beautiful birds...
    have a purrrfect fun weekend!
James Byron Dean the persian cat boy

  • ..thanks for the flower info..never saw any of those guys before...Happy Birthday to Roxy..and to Zoe's dad.. of course we will all act naughty for you in honor of the big day..Raining hard here in my part of the Pacific Northwest..the shelter wrote in my papers i didn't like rain and having my feet wiped off..surprise..I love running around like a wild dog in it..I can run the length of big field in no time and then jump in the woods and explore and when we get back to house I have my own towel and get dried off.. even my toes..and then there is the pellet stove to lay in front of ...Black Mama and the tribe were all hanging out in the shed and said "hi" when I ran by..they all have cozy houses..they'll be happy I saw several 25 lb. bags of cat food being stored on the porch for them..James is putting on his rain gear..says there is work to do outside..getting the farm/ranch ready for the winter...hope I get to help later...over and out, Chewy.. p.s. never have done Halloween..hope I get a costume!..though, I am getting a orange vest to wear because it is hunting season and James doesn't want some nut job to shoot me and think I am a coyote or a fox..but they never let me out of their sight so chances of that happening are next to none..they are worry warts!!

  • Hello. Roxy wanted me to tell you how happy she was that the Glue Squad remembered her birthday!!! She turned two today-- she's still a little puppy-headed, but Millie and I love her all the same. She has a very special treat coming up for her, don't laugh, but she is going to the vet! Now, you'll think that that is a mean thing to do to a pup on her birthday, but one of her favorite people in the whole wide world is Miss Holly, who is one of the vet techs. Dr. Dude will dremel her nails down, and she doesn't mind that too much, and will squeeze her butt, which she does NOT like at all, but THEN she will get to spend lots of time getting hugs and kisses from Miss Holly. Dad will then take her to Burger King and she'll get her VERY OWN cheeseburger that she won't even have to share a little bit!! Of course, we all wish Mom was here to celebrate with us, but she is still on the road-- she spent this past week in Albuquerque at the Shar Pei National Specialty. And Francesca Baby, she got to meet someone who knows you! I'll let Maddox try to guess who. Mom asked her to give you kisses from me the next time she sees you.
    A bientot!
