Do You Know About Bald Cypress Knees?

Posted by F&S

At the farm, there's a beautiful grove of bald cypress trees.  We Frenchies were exploring there the other day and found something unusual growing.  Here's a lesson in cypress knees.

Sharkey, let's go explore beneath the grove of bald cypress trees where the little basket storage house stands. Don't you just love their fluffy foliage?

Do you know why some of these cypress trees have wire cages around them?

Francesca, everyone knows that you gnaw on trees when we chase squirrels. This happens to be one that you really did a number on. The cages are protecting the trees from your powerful jaws!

What's that odd, knobby thing sticking out of the ground?

Oh, I've heard about these things. They're called cypress knees.

You're right, Sharkey. The knees grow vertically out of the tree's roots and protrude above the soil.

In the southern states, these trees grow in swamps and the knees rise up and out of the water.

Franny, I've heard that scientists really don't know what function cypress knees actually serve. They're kind of mysterious.

Our knees are quite small, but researchers have recorded a 14-foot-tall knee along the Suwannee River, which flows through the states of Florida and Georgia.

In the swamps they say that you get bigger knees where there's deeper water, and that the older the tree, the more knees grow.

These trees don't live in a swamp and they've only been here for about 10 years. I wonder what the knees will be like 10 years from now?

  • Bald is beautiful! :)

Very interesting about Cypress knees. I would have thought it would be a wayward root popping up from the soil.

I like that nature keeps her edge of mystery. A girl never reveals all her secrets! (wink, wink)

    Happy Monday to all

  • Morning Girls,

Yes, it's me Chloe :) I am back to blogging. Mom said I have grown up and can handle more responsibility on the computer. LOl Anyway, you girls look great! I like to chew the trees so mom said that's a great idea putting the wire around the bottom. I would have pulled that root out of the ground too :) Having all those trees makes for lots of shad and us huskies need our shade.
Well, you girls have a great day and I am so happy mom is letting me blog again. I have lots to tell you all but don't want to be on the computer to to long. Trying to impress mom :)
Have a great day.. weather here in NJ is cool today so Im off to take my morning nap on the deck.

    Love
    Chloe xx

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, How fun to see those beautiful cypress trees all around Martha's wonderful basket house there at her Bedford farm! My Mom absolutely enjoyed seeing all of those beautiful baskets stored in that house plus some other items, too! How fascinating to learn all about those cypress knees around the ground by the cypress trees! Photo # 11 sure is unusual and the cypress knees are, also! How is GK doing? Hope to hear about his latest Dog Shows real soon and give him and Martha a hug for me!! Have a great day again! Nice to hear from Gail so far and hope to hear from the rest of you real soon! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello everyone,
Those sure are strange looking knees, aren't they? I think I know what the purpose of the knees is. Now on Martha's trees they are just starting out but on one of Te pictures the knees looked like a wall. People climb walls for excercise, correct? Well, I think the high knees on the tree are for squirrels and chipmunks to climb. Don't laugh, they need excercise too. Hehehehehehehe.
Chloe, welcome back. How is the hole digging going? Is it still an active project or are you outgrowing it? Chewy, how do you like your new home? You and Black Mamna getting along? Zoe, really? Pants biter? Well girlfriend, you can't be too careful. The guy that came to do work could have been an imposter. Right? Dixie Boy, it will be getting nice and cool soon so you won't need an AC for long anyway. Rebel, are your ducks all gone? Kirby, Missy Chow, Dudley, baby Favor, Martha, Lucy andRiley, what are all of you up to? Did you have a nice weekend? Kitty was happy her Mamna came home. James Dean probably read a novel and Abby went on nice walks. Brutus and Max Ruby, how is your nursing career going?
Well, I am getting in deck time so I will check back later but I, along with Eden, GK's mom want to thank you for all the nice stuff you said about our boy GK. We are very proud of him.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good Morning F & S

I have a bald Cypress at my house his name is dad :)
Yup he is a baldie all right - very little leaves at the top of that tree ;) Still has leaves along the sides but nothing growing up top.

Franny you better stop chewing those trees and focus on trying to climb the tree. You have a better chance catching the critters that way then trying to chew the tree down especially with those Frenchie teeth, they are good for nothin.

So it's Monday - YUK. Mom has to go back to work so I'll just have to lay on the deck in this beautiful weather and relax - too bad for you mom ;)

    Zoe

P.S. It's about time you were allowed computer time Chloe - welcome back!

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I hope you had a better weekend than I did; bath time. That has been happening more and more lately. Don’t tell anyone I told you this, I do feel better when my fur is fluffy like it is now. I’m up early this morning because Daddy has a doctors appointment early this morning. They are trying to find out why he has pains in his left arm. He thinks it’s a pulled mussel and not a problem in the joint. I think it is in the joint; old age you know. Hehehehe He’s looking at me now so I better get off of here.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Good Monday to all! Nice info on Cypress trees and their knobby knees. I did not know that. Well welcome back Chloe! We can't wait to hear about new adventures with Chloe!

I know everyone has their own adventures going on but you should drop in on the SF Shiba Puppy Cam on Ustream and watch adorable little Shiba puppies who will be three weeks old this week. I hope everyone had a lovely, fun weekend full of treats and belly rubs!

  • Good morning ladies,
Those sure are some knobby knees growin' out of those trees! The swamp pic was creepy as usual even with the sun shining.
Our river birch has a root that is poking up out of the grass, but I don't think it's going to get any bigger. I don't gnaw on it, I'm still on my hunt for cicadas, yummmmm!
I'll check in later to see what else is happening.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hello F&S, GK and all the GS buddies:
What an interesting blog about Bald Cypresses. Whatever the purpose of the knees, it appears obvious that you need lots of space to be able to plant them, and that they love water. We have no baldies in our household, everyone here has lots of hair, including us. Martha went to the groomer on the weekend, she looks so beautiful now, very clean, cool and comfortable, she also got some new jewellery, a new nametag with her name and new address. Riley is next - he goes next weekend (just before he starts his schooling - gotta be able to see and be seen!
Lovely days this past weekend, although we are supposed to get another hot spell starting tomorrow. Don't put the a/c away yet!
Love and beardie bounces, Martha, Miz Lu and Riley boy.

  • Hello Girls, & all my Glue Squad Buddies,
Lady Ruby Gem, M.D., has a diagnosis of this Bald Cyprus and believe they are to be cast in upcoming Halloween movies. They are strange for sure and a bit scary.

Chloe, welcome back, and girlfriend I know you have been a big help in the landscaping design business this summer. In case some of the newbies like me don't know, (I know because of Warrior Prince Basil and Mom), Chloe, is Zoe's cousin in New Jersey and a Husky. Chloe, do you like water? I don't. Kirby, I don't let on either that the end of the bath makes me feel good too.

My nursing career is doing very well, however I was in protection mode Saturday morning early and there was a raccoon rumble. OMG, I tore outside, Mom racing behind and boom, she fell over the sprinkler, I was chasing the 2 raccoons, and Mom said it was a good thing they were little and raced up the tree to Mom and Dad. I do believe I scared them off, but Mom says I have to be very careful now, as Mom and Dad will be back for revenge. Later starts to the morning will be better. She is keeping Protector Ruby under lock and key at the early hours.

Oh, Abby are you planning James Dean's birthday for Wednesday? Is he going to have any friends for his party? How old will he be?Cats probably don't eat pizza at their party, is it a catnip free for all?

Have a GEM of a day all.
    Love & licks,
    Ruby

  • Hi Y'all,
I thought Mis was the only thing with knobby knees. Ohhhhh, Wobbly Knees! Sorry, I got that wrong. These are some cool trees though. We have one at the pond, but since it stands in a wet spot, I don't go near it. Mis has been watching for it to develop knees. Maybe George, THE WATER DOG can find them. And Francesca, Zoe maybe right, we've watched cats do it so how hard could it be to climb a tree. I've come close to going up the maple here, but it has this huge fork about 5' off the ground. Mis has been waiting to see me get stuck in it. Blackmail pictures she said!??!!
Great to hear from you Chloe! GK, we only have one problem with the AC not running. Mis has to leave all the windows open. Because all the windows are open she can't leave for long periods of time. Something about others not respecting our property. It's really bad, since only a few years ago you could leave everything unlocked and sitting out without it getting stolen. We had some young punks casing the place this spring. Between me and Mis's brother, we scared them away! What's worse, the incidents of dogs being stolen is rising here. That's why when she leaves for long periods, we have to stay inside. Sorry for the rant, but they call this progress!
Anyway, the circuit board should be here today. Hoping that will fix it!
It's great hearing from all my pals here and I hope everyone has a doggy good day. Wow, that's pretty good, DOGGY GOOD DAY!
    Dixie Boy

  • Good morning everyone! Bald Cypress Knees???
Well, Mom has a brand new knee, Dad is balding and has creaky knees....hmmmmmm sounds like we could use one of those trees at our house! hahahaha
Great to hear from Chloe again.
Kirby Bear, I feel your pain...I, Brutus had a bath Saturday morning. Mom was really mad because I was rolling around in the driveway, got all dirty and dusty then came into the house and hopped on the couch. She keeps the couches covered so I don't know what the fuss was all about. All I know is I got a bath. (I do feel a whole lot better, though)
Another hot day....when is fall coming????? Went out early this morning and it looks like we will be staying in the A/C today. Bummer, but it's better than being outside in 90 degrees.
Must be off, I, Max, hear something downstairs, must investigate!
    Pugs and kisses,
    Brutus and Max--always on alert!

  • It's me again...Chloe :)

Just came back to do some reading to catch up on everyone. Maddox, I have been doing a lot of digging. Pulling those moles right out of the ground by their butts LOL. Got lots of animals over the summer. I even got 2 bullfrogs, oh and i did get skunked like cousin T-bone. It was not a direct spray but I still smelled. :( And yes Ruby, I love water. Mom has had my pool out and filled all summer :) And if it's not filled I splash in my water bowl :) Oh something else too... Mom almost had a heart attack. I got out of the yard over the summer. The lawn guy left the gate open so I snuck out. Was gone for over an hour then mom found me. I didn't go far, just exploring in the woods and playing in the lake. Came home a black husky :) Mom was doing so good with her anxiety over me then that just kicked her back into crazy mode again. She is finally not stressing out as much.
Anyway, thanks everyone for welcoming me back. I did go back to catch up on whats been going on at the blogg and my heart skipped a beat seeing GK again on last weeks post <3 Sure did miss seeing his handsome face :)

    Love
    Chloe xx

  • Well, I learn new stuff all the time! Thanks for the lesson, Francesca Baby! All I know about knees around here is that one of mine is sore, and Dad got a new one for Christmas last year!!
    A bientot!

  • :-) Interesting....BALD Cypress Trees??? and what funny roots, wow! F & S always curious ;-)
Dixie Boy it's OK to rant when something you don't like happens, hope no one disrespects you or the property.
James Dean I hope I don't forget to wish you a Happy Birthday, I forget everything lately. Ruby girl be careful around Racoons, they can turn on a dime but only run ambling. Rebel, Cicadas? well you should be here, we have three that Kitty brought for me and HUGE ones, never been that close to one till this year. Such big eyes and their green wings, they are ugly and beautiful at the same time, but not for a meal yuck!

I finished going back to all of last weeks posts and tried answering them short and sweet!

Dixie Boy, Rebel, Martha, Miz Lu, Riley boy, Kirby, Zoe, Ruby, Chloe, Maddox, James Dean, Black Mamma, Chewy and Dudley Do Right...as well as gail...EVERYONE here DWGS have a great day! It will be a very hot and humid day here, guess Indian Summer.

    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Hello Francesca,Sharkey and glue squad buddies,
Great to hear about the big cypress trees and those large knees. Mom says they look like a nice place for vampires to sit when they are out in the swamp. She loves halloween so maybe its true.. I think they are a little spooky myself.
WELCOME BACK CHLOE!!!!! We love hearing about all your husky adventures. Mom is taking care of a gorgeous husky boarder at work who speaks all the time, they have a wonderful language.
Dixie boy, hope your A/C gets fixed real soon. Rebel, Abby likes to hunt for cicadas too and grasshoppers. Kirby, glad you enjoyed your bath. Maddox, congratulations to you and Eden for such a great looking son. Zoe, you always have us laughing!! Abby and Mom went down to the garden and picked some catnip for me for Wednesday, getting ready for me to turn the big six...Lots of brushing here but no bath so far.
Today many of our human friends are back to school so fall must be here. Have a safe and purrrfect day,
    James Byron Dean

  • ..Yo buddies..life here on the farm/ranch is very interesting...the feral cats are all okay guys..here is my background (I am a purebred cattle dog..but unlike Cora-Belle I was not bred to be big..and I have a smooth coat and weigh about 40lbs.. and Lucinda says I am a beautiful red-chestnut color with a half mask..yeah..yeah..the Cora-Bell had a prefect double mask and was double coated..but Lucinda says I am a beautiful boy and I was abused)..sold out of a pet shop..lived out doors..went to pound...moved from one shelter to another..then some guy called James saw my picture in the paper..pleading for a home..had been at this pound for 3 months..he rushed in and got me..the rest is history..I do get car sick..but I am working on that, every car ride meant a new shelter and lots of noise and other doggies and that made me nervous..I am now sporting a new macho camo collar and have a bunch of toys and sleep on the bed with my buddies...I am learning some manners...who knew... you aren't suppose to try and bite people..Lucinda is patient with me...so we have signs posted about the property that a security dog is on duty..how funny is that?..as far as naughtiness..I am keeping the tradition alive and well..yikes..time to go spy on all the wildlife around the farm/ranch and since it is hunting season I am going to wear a orange vest and so is Lucinda..even though the property is posted no hunting...I love this place..over and out, Chewy.. p.s.,.. Black Mama stood inside the kitchen this morning and ate a crunchie...funny cat!

  • I had never heard of cypress knees, so it was very interesting to find out about them. Thanks for the lesson, Francesca and Sharkey!
