What's Going On With The Crabapple Trees?

Posted by F&S

We Frenchies were looking at the four Sargent crabapple trees growing on the farm when we noticed that something was wrong with two of them.  Of course, we launched a full-scale investigation and thank goodness, came up with a logical explanation.

Sharkey, this is a Sargent crabapple, a good tree for many different landscapes. It has a unique size and form, growing as a dense, mounded shrub rather than a tree.

In the spring, it's covered with fragrant blossoms that turn into these tiny, bright red apples, a favorite food that birds love.

But what do you suppose is going on with the Sargent crabapples on this side of the driveway?

You know, many types of crabapples are very pest and disease prone and can be a real problem in the landscape. But the Sargent crabapple is highly resistant to those problems.

Which makes me wonder why so many branches are falling off?

I suspect these loppers have something to do with it.

Sure enough - mystery solved! Look who's back from his coffee break! It's Chhewang, who has become a very good pruner.

This shrub grows 6 to 10 feet tall and almost as wide. I guess they've gotten too bushy for this space and Martha wanted them to be cut back a bit.

  • Hey there Francesca and Sharkey! Or should we call you Sherlock and Watson? hahahahaha Another mystery solved. Good job.
Well, the holiday weekend is finally here. Don't think we are planning anything. Mom works Saturday night and Dad works Sunday evening. But they both are off on Labor Day. Maybe some BBQ time....we hope.
Have a great weekend everyone and stay safe!
    Pugs and kisses.
Brutus and Max...hoping for some good "Q"!

  • I've dated a few 'crab-apples' in my day! :)

Good work girls on solving the mystery! :)

I would agree that Chhewang, along with other staff does an excellent job at keeping the farm in tip top shape!

Happy long weekend to fellow Gluey's! :)

  • Good Morning F & S

Must be that time of year because mom was a pruning fool last Sunday. Our yard looked like a war zone - branches all over the place! I bet your crabbie tree looked great when Chhewang was finished. That is a differnt name - Chhewang. Can you imagine when he was young and his parents would call for him CHHEEEWANNNNGGGGG!!!! I thought T-Bone had it bad mom goes TTTTTTTTT-BBBBBBOOOOOONE. Glad I have a short name but when I chew up the TP I get called lots of other names that if I would post I'd get my paw smacked by the DW ;)

It's FRIDAY!!! Yes the long weekend has arrived and mom will be home the entire time. Big party here Sunday mom is throwing a 50th birthday party for her sister. She thinks it's the regular Labor Day BBQ but mom invited her friends. I hope she is surprised it should be lots of fun. Only problem is there won't be many little kids so I'll have to use my charm to get some snacks. Otherwise I'll have to climb on a chair and hit the table. That move could end me up in the dog house so I have to be really cool when I perform that stunt :)

Have a great weekend everyone. Enjoy and be safe :)

  • Good morning everyone,
There is so much work to be done on a big farm, isn't there? I have enough work with my little place. Well, big weekend coming up. Zoe, even though there are no kids coming to the party, I KNOW you will find a way to get goodies. Kirby Bear, how is your dad? Tell him I asked about him, Karen too. black Mamma, Ivan, Ivanka and Lucinda, same thing for you. Hope James is getting better every day. Brutus and Max, have a great BBQ this weekend. Ruby, I think you should cut more of your mamma Lynn's hair off and donate it to Locks of Love. She has real long hair so she wouldn't miss 5-6 more inches missing. Hehehehehehehe. Kitty, are you going away with Delia this weekend? Missy Chow, you football groupie, you behaving little one? Dixie Boy, how is George? I never had that procedure and I don't want it either. Yuk. Dudley, baby Favor, rebel, what are your plans this weekend? James Dean will be reading, Abby will be looking cute, Martha, Riley and Lucy will be at the beach and I will be working on the kennel. Gail, Sonya, Pam and the rest of you human Glue Squadders, what is going on with you this weekend?
I will end with BIG NEWS! Scott, my human brother, Karen's son, was on his third tour of duty. He is a Command Sargeant Major in the US Army. This time he was in Kuwait. He told Karen that he would be home in October but guess who knocked on the door to surprise her. Yup, Scott. She was sooooooooo happy that he is home safe and sound.
Everyone have a great weekend stay out of trouble, stay healthy. Well, not the roaches that Kirby talked about. I don't think they have a purpose in life. Yes they do. They annoy people. Geez. Hehehehehehehe
    Love to all,
    Maddox
PS - Karen said Happy Labor Day to one and all

  • Geez, I wanted to say something to each of you today as I caught up on everyone and then I didn't say Happy Birthday to Kitty. She will be 6 years old on the 1st and I don't know if the DW staff will be around this weekend to post comments after today because of the holiday. So, I am not taking any chances. Enjoy your birthday this weekend Kitty
    Love,
    Maddox

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
It must be in the air, as my Dad was a trimming fool on the fitzers yesterday. The ones along the street are all trimmed. Glad Sherlock and Watson figured out the mystery for us. Good job!

Now for the big song.......for KITTY--HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR KITTY, Happy Biiiiiirrrrrthday to you...and many more. Did you hear me Kitty????? Maybe Auntie Alex will bring you lots of birthday treats next week when Mom and Dad are with the granddogs.

Karen, that is so cool that Scott surprised you and he is home. Hope you didn't flip out of your chair and are alright. Parties and BBQ's everywhere. Before my Dad's surgery on Tuesday we are having a small BBQ just with my people brother and sister. Still lots of work today. Zoe, your Mom is a master chef for sure---2 parties in row.

Oh, everyone, good news, Ivan, Ivanka and Black Mama will be back soon. James got my turkey stew. Wasn't butt vrooming yet, but I bet soon he will be. Everyone is resting, but will be back on the Daily Wag soon she said. Yahoooooo!

Have a GEM of a weekend all and eat, drink and be merry.

    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, WOW! That sure is a beautiful crabapple tree close to the driveway! I have never seen one before and thanks for sharing it with us! Chhewang sure was doing a great job trimming that tree for Martha and I'll bet you enjoyed watching him! Who was that across the driveway in photos #9? Had to be another great farm guy! Sure hope you beautiful girls have a nice Labor Day weekend and be sure to hug Gk and Martha for me! So nice to hear from Brutus and Max, Gail, Zoe, Maddox, and Ruby already this morning and your comments are so great! Maddox, how great that you got Scott to show up and he sure did surprise you didn't he! Ruby, thanks for letting us know that Black Mama, Ivan and Ivanka will be back soon and glad James is doing somewhat better! We will have a busy weekend with 4 of our family members still living here and using Mom's truck everyday! I have to go to my Vet very soon for my check up and haven't got there for over a year! I am doing OK! Happy Birthday sweet Kitty on Labor Day and I know Delia will take good care of you! Hope all of you have a great weekend! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

    delia & Kitty =^, ,^=

Karen, PLEASE tell your CSM son "THANK YOU for his service and GOD BLESS him"

  • Hello Sharkey, Francesca, and Glue squad buddies,
Sharkey and Franny make a good detective team. Maybe they can figure out more mysteries at the farm, like where does the orb weaver spider go during the daytime?? We have a beautiful brown orb weaver spider like Charlotte who is out every night by the window on our porch. She takes care of all her spider business for hours then disappears during the day. Nocturnal weaving, a natural designer.
    HAPPY BIRTHDAY KITTY!!!!
Hope you have a PURRRRFECT day, purrs and hugs to you my beautiful friend.
Black Mama, hope James feels better real soon. Zoe, hope you get some yummy treats at you BBQ. Hey Missy Chow, how about our Patriots???? :)
Ruby,Dixie Boy, Maddox, Kirby,Rebel, Sweet Dudley and everyone hope you have a safe and wonderful Labor day weekend!!! Mom is working at the animal hospital so Abby will be working too.
James Dean the reading cat boy

  • Hello F&S, GK and all the GS buddies:
Well it's finally Friday - we are so looking forward to the long weekend - Mom is home for three days and everyone is going to the beach on Sunday! We love the beach and the water and the other dogs - its a great time and we all bark our heads off like fools. Sometimes we stop for ice cream on the way home, OMG, ice cream is the most wonderful food in the world - we would eat it 24/7 if we could, but it probably would make us sick! So, only for special treats. Got a few jobs to supervise today, we have big cedar hedges in the back of the yard, so Dad probably will start trimming them soon, its been soooo hot this week that maybe he'll wait a little while until it cools off! Everyone have a wonderful time this weekend, have a wonderful birthday Kitty on Sunday - hope you get some cool toys for your birthday. Love and Beardie bounces to all - Martha, Miz Lu (writing) and Riley boy.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I was up late last night while Mommy and Daddy were watching a football game. Now as everyone knows, ole Kirby has to have his beauty sleep. I slept in this morning, went outside for a quick, err look around, had my breakfast, and now I’m reading the latest news. Speaking of which; I have some good news. Daddy’s doctor said he was, “Clean as a whistle.” That’s really good news and won’t have to go through that again for three more years. They pumped him so full of air that he could have played The Star Spangled Banner on a tuba when it came back out. Hehehehe Have a good, and safe, weekend all; see you next month.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi Y'all,
Great job figuring the mystery out. It takes some good investigative instincts, of which you two have in abundance. Keep up the good work!
James Dean, Mis said that Orb Spinners usually become hair pieces around here. Nothing like walking into a massive spiderweb early in the morning! It really freaks her out. I never knew she had such moves!
Maddox, WOOOOOOHOOOOOO, that's great news!!!! Hope all of you have a great labor day weekend catching up.
Happy Birthday Kitty. Hope there are lots of treats in your future. Maybe a kitty spa day would be nice. You could use one!
It's great to hear that James is doing better and that we may start hearing from Black Mama and the gang soon. Kirby, its also great to hear that your dad was clean as a whistle! You might even say that for a little while, 'he wasn't full of it'......(been there, done, that so I can joke about it!).
And well wishes to Ruby's Dad, we'll be sending good thoughts your way!
Hope everyone has a great Labor Day weekend and take care! We are going to try and be nicer to Mis today, (she hopes) as yesterday Me and George ate some things that didn't stick. We were sick most of the night, but don't worry all's good this morning, except Mis's head. And to top it off, Zeke found the deer scat and had to cover himself in it. WHHHHEEEEWWWW!!!! Our house reaked!!! Since Mis was watching him for her sister, she had to give him a bath. Of course that was before me and George went on our scavenging trip. Right now she's not so sure that Zeke didn't do it again this morning! Something smells!! Time to go hide! Seeeee Yaaaaa!!
    Dixie Boy

  • Zoe here - just decided to check back at the DW and I saw the great news about Karen's son - YAHOOOO!!!!

Maddox you tell your brother Scott that everyone in my family says THANK YOU for serving and making sure we are all safe.

This calls for a TP and cheese curl party for sure!!!

    Zoe

  • Wow, I'm so late posting cause we're on the road.
Happy birthday Kitty! Guess what? Wejust drove past your town on our way north!
It's so wonderful to read all the good news today!
    Have a great weekend everybody.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Great detective work Francesca Baby and Sharkey! We have pretty flowering crab in our backyard and it seems like Mom is always lopping something off of it.
We will be spending our weekend indoors mostly. If you want to know why it is because there are these big loud motorcycles that have come into our town to celebrate their 110th anniversary, although I don't think any of the big loud motorcycles are actually that old. Now, one or two of them are fine and don't really bother us, but someone on the news last night said they were expecting 100,000 of them!!!! That's a whole lot of big loud motorcycles and THAT hurts our ears. Mom mutters things under her breath about noise ordinances, but the police drive that very kind of big loud motorcycle, so will probably not hand out many tickets,I don't think. So we will just keep the doors closed and the AC on and hope they go away soon. Until then, I hope they all have fun at their party!!
    A bientot!

  • A happy Labor Day weekend to everyone! I'm running and gunning as always of late and I too missed Kitty's 6th B-Day! Much fun safe roaming for her I hope. Karen that is very exciting that your son surprised you at home. Maddox, I did some research and your human bro being a Command Sargent Major is a very impressive big deal. Please thank him for his service!

Everyone have a great and safe weekend!!!

  • :-) KIRBY dear! I'm happy to hear your Daddy is whistling cleaning, and able to whistle a Toot ...he he ;-)

    Delia & Kitty >^ £ ^<

  • See, this is the problem about posting so early in the day!
Karen, we are sooooo happy that your son Command Sargeant Major is home and safe! Please thank him for his service to our country and keeping us safe.
Kirby, glad to hear about your Dad. Clean as a whistle! What a relief.
Can't wait to hear from Black Mamma, Ivan and Ivanka!
    And......Happy Birthday Kitty!!!!!!!!!!
We will ask for an extra treat in your honor!
Once again, have a great weekend and Labor Day Waggers!
    Brutus and Max

  • Hey there! I'm a 5-month old Frenchie and I just found your blog. Love it! But I sure hope someone wasn't using anvil pruners on live trees! Bypass pruners are the right tool!

  • Greetings! I know this is kinda off topic but I was wondering if you knew
where I could find a captcha plugin for my comment form?
I'm using the same blog platform as yours and I'm having trouble finding
    one? Thanks a lot!
