What You May Not Know About Miniature Donkeys

Posted by Francesca

We've been so busy that we haven't seen too much of our friends, the miniature donkeys.  Some of Sharkey's summer reading has included a book about donkeys and she had a wealth of information to share.

Hello, Billie, Clive, and Rufus! How about a little trivia concerning your breed?

Did you know that without a doubt, America's favorite breed of ass, pardon me, but that's what you're called in the equine world, is the miniature Mediterranean donkey? That makes you quite special!

Today, there are more than 50,000 minis registered. Some of those have 500 recorded ancestors tracing all the way back to the very first mini donks in this country!

Billie, you are a spotted donkey and we should register you with The American Council of Spotted Asses! Yes, there really is such a thing!

Although I've never seen it done here, you're strong enough to give little children rides and you can easily pull a cart carrying an adult. I wonder if Jude and Truman will ride you?

Aside from Frenchies, miniature donkeys are arguably the cutest creatures on the planet!

  • Happy Friday to all..

Hooray for donks! :) What a great way to start the day, learning about all things donkaroonies! :)

Photo #4 is the best, ever! :)

By the way, I've dated a few 'asses' in my life, and they were not as cute as the donks!

I agree wholeheartedly, donks are cute!

Happy weekend to the gluey bunch!

  • Good Morning F & S

I have to say the Donks are cuties but like you said nothing is as cute as a Frenchie ;)

So tell me no pictures from your Maine vacation? Did you go on any fun hikes? Any good snacks fall from Jude and Truman's hands? That would be the best part of the vacation for me ;)

Yesterday was wonderful, mom took the day off from work and and we spent the afternoon laying by the pool. The weather was beautiful and dad heated the pool for mom and grandmom and then she made a wonderful dinner. Mom grilled dad a really big piece of meat, it was called a Tomahawk Steak. Boy oh boy was that a big steak - it looked like something Fred Flinstone would have eaten. A big old bone at the end looked like a side of a cow! I was hoping to get the bone but that went in the trash. Mom said she had enough of the skunk this past week didn't want to be cleaning any piles of hurl up from the bone :(

I'm loving this cool weather, not hoping for summer to end just love the cool nights. Mom said Mother Nature has been looking after us, we've been able to open all the windows this week to air out the house.

Have a great weekend everyone :)

  • Hello,
I love the donks too. Karen was in the stall with them and she said they are very playful.
I have a question. Well, a few questions. How old are the donks? What is the life expectancy of a donk? Where did Martha get the donks? Do they have to get their hooves trimmed like horses do? That is it for questions.
It was bee u tea full yesterday and I think today will be a repeat. I love the cool mornings. Cool mornings is great for chows, right GK, Missy Chow and Kirby Bear? Little ones like Rebel, Dudley, Zoe, Baby Favor, and Abby probably shiver on a cool morning but us longer coated breeds like Martha, Riley, Lucy, Ruby, Dixie Boy, Ivanka and Ivan do well with coolness. Kitty and Kames Dean probably enjoy it also as they are longer coated felines. I don't know about Black Mamma, if she is short or long coated but I am sure that little woman does just fine.
Everyone have a great weekend. Think real good thoughts for James.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
Very educational today. I noticed a ball I believe in the donks pen. Do they play soccer? If they are from Italy, that is probably why. No rain yesterday, so that was nice for me. Mom took bubble baths yesterday and a wonderful package arrived for the ENTIRE FAMILY (hear that Mom, the family) of sweet treats from a distant land. And Mom being the sweet lover, forgot about that entire family thing, and dove right in. Well, she didn't eat it all, there is plenty left for Dad when he returns to me today. She gave it a good try however. I think she is going to find that 20 lbs she lost, real quick, eating sweets. Oh, well, we did have a good time together while Dad was away. But I can hardly wait for his return and a trout. Have a GEM of a weekend all. I agree these cool mornings are so nice, I believe I will return to a nap.
    Love & licks,
    Ruby

  • Sharkey, thank you for educating us about all things ass! I think a few of America's stand-up comics might have a bit of fun with the title, "The American Society of Spotted Asses", if you know what I mean. Anyway, Mom thinks the donks are cute and sweet, and I think they're highly chaseable! Bye!

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Who needs an encyclopedia when Sharkey is around? She is just full of it; I mean information. I could make some jokes about the donks, but I am feeling ‘tasteful’ this morning even if it is raining. Yep, rain again in the south. It rained about two and a half inches yesterday and another inch this morning. There goes the morning trip out in the yard. I’ll hold it and complain about it until I can get out. Daddy says he can do lots of things but he can’t stop the rain for me. I think he’s trying to fool ole Kirby; my Daddy can do anything for his favorite pet. It’s Friday; have a good, and safe, weekend all.
    Catch you later, Kirby

  • Morning Girls & Glue Squad Buddies - I'm up bright and early this morning to post, yeah!!! :) You girls look like you had fun with the donks, so much information about their history. All three of them look like they enjoyed your visit. Maddox, it is definitely our weather, I've been enjoying the cool mornings for sure, as well as stretching out on the cool grass. But Mom checks me afterwards just to make sure. Ruby, make sure Mom keeps something good for Dad; and he brings you a surprise from his fishing trip too. Sounds like you girls had a good time. Hope everyone has a fun weekend, the weather is suppose to be excellent. Better run, more deck time for me. :)

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, Thank you sweet girls for sharing this beautiful blog again about your sweet buddies, Martha's cute miniature donkeys! I always love seeing you beautiful girls and Billie, Clive, and Rufus whenever possible! Your information about these beautiful, miniature donkeys is so great to learn about! Sure hope you sweet girls and GK have another wonderful weekend and please hug GK and Martha again for me! Was so nice to hear such great comments from Gail, Zoe, Maddox and Ruby this morning and can't wait to hear from all the rest of you great buddies! • Hello F&S,GK,and all the GS buddies:
What a very interesting blog about miniature donkeys. I believe they are very protective of their charges and sometimes are used to guard livestock as well. Where we used to live you would often see donkeys in the same fields as the sheep and goats, we also saw them with alpacas (they are really funny looking dudes!).
Today we have already been to our favourite park which was totally empty - we love to run off leash and it certainly tires us out big time. Its great to have the cool mornings - we do have thick double coats, and even though we get shaved down in June, about now our coats are really starting to grow in. Soon it will be time to go to the groomer again to get our faces cleaned up, its hard to see with so much fur/hair in your eyes! Well, its time to get going, we'll be out enjoying the cool on the patio for a while (if everyone doesn't just fall asleep!).
Love and beardie bounces to all - Martha, Miz Lu and Riley boy.

  • :-) Billie, Clive, and Rufus, you are the cutest Asses I've ever seen!!! ;-) Yes you are certainly a lovely Donk Triptych.
F & S you seemed very excited to see them, as they were to see you..
Another Friday is here, ohhh where do they go!?
Because I don't want to miss naming anyone, I will just say Hugs and Well Wishes to all the DWagger-Glue Squad....
Purrs to James Dean, Black Mama, and all the other felines that I forgot the names of at this moment(I'm not finished with my coffee so can't think)
Oh here comes Kitty just walking slowly to say Good Morning to me and the gang here ;-)
    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Hello Franny,Sharkey, Billie, Rufus, Clive and my Dwag buddies,
So nice to see the cute donkeys today and to learn more information about them. I love seeing the donkeys. We do not have the opportunity to see any here. Maybe at the local fair next week??
Yes, its fair time next time and a chance for everyone to see the best local livestock and 4H competitions. Mom loves to see all the animals.
Beautiful weather!!! Sharkey and Franny hope to see pictures from your holiday in Maine soon. Zoe, here's high paws for the Jersey Shore!!! Go Stronger than the Storm state!! Maddox, you always bring a smile to our day. Ruby, hope you enjoy a dry lawn weekend and go for lots of walks. Missy Chow, how about those patriots??? Dudley, Kirby,Rebel, Dixie Boy, Lucy, Riley, Minnow, hugs to you. Kitty, we enjoyed hearing about your hunting adventures.

  • Hi everyone,
The donks are soooo cute! But like Franny and Sharkey, I'd be barking my head off at them.

Got to take a nap, that twerp George really takes the wind out of me!
