The Social Life Of Horses

Posted by F&S

While tootling around the farm recently, we Frenchies stopped the Kawasaki near the horse paddocks and paid a little visit to the Fresians.  As you may know, we are very curious by nature and have found out that when you start asking questions, you can usually learn so many interesting things!

Sharkey, let's stop here and visit the horses grazing in the paddock.

And Sasa is across the drive in his very own paddock. What's up with that?

Do you suppose Betsy separates them because of a male dominance thing?

These 4 guys have been together for many years and are used to each other's company. Sasa came to live here just a couple of years ago.

Do you boys just not like Sasa? Is that it?

Sasa, we were wondering why you are all alone?

Well, little Frenchies, it's like this - not all horses like each other. That's just the way it is! It's called the pecking order.

Betsy tried to keep us all together, but it just wasn't working out too well. The other horses were constantly chasing me and they even bit me at times. Rinze, the alpha male, even took to kicking!

So, to avoid injury, I get an entire paddock all to myself! This way, we can still see each other but no fights ensue.

I really don't mind this arrangement at all. I'm very well cared for and that's what really matters.

The other horses can keep their little club. I think I have the better deal.

Hey, Betsy! Be sure to give Sasa some extra treats. We had no idea how challenging it can be in the equine world.

  • Good morning one and all,
Ok, you know me. I think about things. So, I was thinking that Sasa has that paddock all to himself but he is alone. Would Sasa and the donks get along? If not, then we have to think of a friend to be in the paddock with Sasa. Maybe a life size cut out of another horse.
Or, maybe an outdoor movie screen like at a drive in theater that played shows like Mr. Ed hehehehehehehe.
Well now I learned about Mocking Birds. I have never seen one. You know, there are parrots that repeat what people say. They should be called Mocking Parrots. Hehehehehehehe.
Oh goodness, I better hit the deck. I am being goofy this morning. I think it is because it is nice and cool out this morning with a little breeze. Perfect Chow weather. With that being said, I am headed to the deck.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good Morning F & S

Oh poor Sasa :( I feel bad for him, maybe we should take a road trip and hang out for a few hours. I hope Betsy gives him extra treats and attention.

The contractor is coming back today - ughhh. I wish he would just finish up and get out of here. I'm tired of all the noise!! He is replacing sections of the cedar on our house before it gets painted. I'm hoping he is out of here today so I can get my yard back.

Rain is on the way so I think I'll just take lots of naps today :)

    Have a good day everyone!

    Zoe

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
First and foremost I must sing to Dixie Boy, for he is 6 today. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR DIXIE BOY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU...and many more!!! Hope you have a GEM of a party!

Now about these horses. I learned so much today about horses and their socializing. Sasa, Maddox has a great idea about the movie screen thing, or the cardboard horse. They could put a tape recording of the horses behind the board maybe. One thing I noticed too, is that your tail is quite long and handsome. You are a very good looking guy and I like seeing all of you out in the pasture. Well, I escaped the bath yesterday due to rain, and no pool time. Today the same, oh darn, maybe tomorrow. Have a GEM of a day all.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Morning Girls & Glue Squad-I think Maddox is on to something, company for Sasa but what will it be or who will it be? Catching up on the last two days postings, I need to have a talk with Mom and get her on a schedule so I can have computer time every day. Bet your road trip to Bedford was fun, did Uncle Carlos play music, did you sing along? All of you looked so cute in the back seat. Then the lesson on figs, never had a fresh one, but they looked good. I think Mom likes them in fig newton cookies the best. Now, Sasa looks so calm in his own paddock, maybe one day he will be able to join the others so they can be all together. Happy Birthday, Dixie Boy!! :) Hope you have a great day with lots of play time, treats, nap time and many, many hugs & kisses. Tell us how you will celebrate. Ruby, you sure look nice resting on the new carpet, bet it is nice & comfy. Abby & James Dean, almost ready for preseason, Pats & Eagles. Mom's dad was a big Giants Fan. Rebel, sounds like you've had some quiet time lately and the duck families are doing well. Dudley Do Right, how are you, have you gone on any long walks lately? Zoe,bet Mom is keeping her magazines safe these days. Kitty, hope you haven't brought any critters home lately. Kirby, how's things with you? Black Mama, Ivan & Ivanka, hope all is going well with you. Any new adventures lately? Martha, Lucy & Riley, what's new? Brutus & Max, how are you? Well, as Maddox said, this is Chow weather so off to the patio. It's been nice & cool the last couple of days.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, OMG! Poor Sasa sure does need a paddock of his own so he won't be hurt by Martha's other 4 Fresians! Every one of them is handsome and Betsy sure knows how to take care of each one of them! You sweet girls were so thoughtful to explain how horses get along! I had a problem similar to Sasa's a while ago 2 times. My Mom's niece had a big white dog years ago who lived with us a while and bit me in the neck one day so she had to take her away. This year she had 2 small dogs that we had to baby sit and the 2 of them decided to bite me in the neck, also. Mom had to put them in cages and then send them home, also. Sure hope all of you great buddies are safe and I am now because Mom takes such great care of me! Thanks for your comment Maddox and hope to hear from the rest of you soon! Black Mama, you live pretty close to me and I live about 15 to 20 miles from the Seahawks! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Good morning ladies,
Happy Birthday Dixie Boy! Sure hope you have a great day!
I think Maddox has an idea there. Maybe the donks and Sassa could be mates. But sometimes fences make good friends, too. Sassa is close to the others, just not in biting range! Yikes!
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Aw, poor Sasa! But, sounds like the perfect set up actually. I agree all the animals are cared for without question impeccably!

Do the donks and horsies hang together? Or is that not a good idea?

    Happy Horsie Day!
    gail

  • Friesians are such magnificent steeds, they feel so powerful to ride. That horse pecking order is always interesting... I always had to watch out for the lowest one in the herd, but he just stayed by himself in the pasture...funny thing the top of the pecking order in my herd was our Pony...she was something else!
Yes I know I'm repeating myself about those fly masks they are so HOT and can cause problems, I just would apply Vaseline around the eyes and repellent on the ears and body.... but that's JMO ;-)

    Happy Birthday Dixie Boy!
    OK got to run

    Hugs & XOXO
    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Hello Sasa, Francesca, Sharkey and GS friends,
This was an important lesson today glue squad. The equine world can mimic the human world at times and the pecking order can be seen in many work places for humans as well. Next time a human friend is turned out to a separate paddock give them extra TLC glue squad buddies because not everybody is a coffee clatcher!! That is my Jimmy thought for the day.
Mom is very happy and thankful for her glue squad friends because she is not part of a clique.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Dixie BOY!!!! Hope you have a terrific day... off to read about the Civil War.
love and purrrrrs to Kitty and Black Mama,
Jimmy Byron Dean the cat boy

  • ..Happy Birthday Dixie Boy..in honor of your birthday we will all act naughty all day...Our role model, Cora-Belle, always did that for every glue squad member..and we will continue..horses can be naughty guys..but every critter has some sort of pecking order..can't we all get along?..later..Black Mama, Ivan and Ivanka

  • Dixie Boy,
I hope you had one heck of a birthday party today. Did you get new toys and lots of treats? As a new member you probably don't know this but we had a member of the Glue Squad, a cattle dog named Cora-Belle that used to be naughty on everyone's birthday and that was her way of celebrating forearm one of us when it was our birthday. When she went to the Rainbow Bridge, we honored her by all being naughty for several days. Even Te very well behaved ones in our group. So now, whenever anyone as a birthday we do something bad tat day in honor of the birthday Glue Squad member whose birthday it is. Our humans sort of let us go because they know this is how we celebrate birthdays. Really neat, eh? In honor of your birthday I lifted my leg three times today in the house and acted like I was going to water things. Naturally it was all an act but Karen yelled the first two times till she figured out what I was up too. Hehehehehehehe
    Happy Birthday Dixie Boy,
    Maddox

  • I'm late I'm late! Happy belated 6th Birthday Dixie Boy I hope you had the bestest day ever!!!

Oh poor Sasha. I know he as everyone else is magnificently cared for but it still seems sad that he is alone in his own paddock. What a great teaching lesson for everyone though. I guess the same issues don't arise when they're in their stalls, that's good.

  • We have two horses on our farm. They are close chums but sometimes Guinness will bite Emrys on the back. And sometimes Emrys will rear up on Guinness if he is a little frisky.
We try to join in on the fun but mummy and auntie are always yelling "get out of there, you two. Do you want to get stepped on?" and so we just pretend to sniff away.
We like your little cart mobile, auntie has an ATV but Pip is too afraid to ride on it.
    By for now
