Our New Pet Doves

Posted by F&S

As you may know, we have a large cage of pretty red factor canaries that sing so beautifully.  Recently, a new cage appeared with very different birds.  Meet our white doves.

Francesca, did you see that there's something new in the servery?

It's a pair of white love doves, a gift from Martha's friend, Memrie Lewis.

I've heard that white doves are good natured social creatures that do well when kept in cages or in aviaries. I see that Vivaldi is fascinated with them, too.

A symbol of peace, these birds are also known as doves of the bible, turtle doves, and white ring-necks.

They say they are intelligent birds that can be taught simple tricks. What do you suppose we could teach them? Maybe to keep a wire cage between them and the cats.

Franny, they don't look too afraid of us. That's why they're good in magic because they don't mind being in a magician's cloth handkerchief or in their dark hat.

White doves are very clean birds and they really love a good bath. That white bowl of water seems to do the trick.

It's also a common practice to release white doves during wedding ceremonies. However white doves don't fly so well and it's actually white homing pigeons that are used, instead.

Because they don't fly so well, they're natural habitat has to be in warm climates where they won't have to migrate any further south.

  • Good morning,
First things first, Black Mamma said an ambulance came to the ranch for James. Glue Squad members, we must all send good thoughts for James to get well and comforting thoughts for Lucinda as well. Ivan , Ivanka and Black Mamma can help by patrolling the ranch and we can help too. Does anyone know their mailing address? Black mamma said they won't be posting for a while so if we had their address, we could all send cards for James and Lucinda to show our support. Get well James and hang in there Lucinda We love you.
Those doves are probably wondering what the heck is going on. Felines and canines surrounding them. I know if I was a bird I would hope the furry ones don't have lunch on their mind. Hehehehehehehe.
Brutus and Max, a black snake in the house of your human brother? What the heck. Well at least it wasn't a mean snake. Zoe, I guess your mom bailed on you cause she couldn't take the skunk smell anymore. She would rather go to the beach to smell the fishes. Dudley, you help your mom a lot. That is very nice of you. I hope you get extra treats. Ruby, I have a solution for your urination problem. I saw something on tv that might help you. It was an infomercial but I forgot what the name of the product. Oh yeah, I remember. It was called DEPENDS. I don't know what it depends on but you could give it a try. Hehehehehehehe
Riley, I am so glad you had a great birthday and you are a very lucky boy cause when Lucy and Martha have birthdays you get to reap the rewards all over again. James Dean, that must have been nice to see mamma and baby deer and it is good Abby was asleep. Where is Rebel and Baby Favor? Kirby, we have rain here and it is going to be all day. I guess today is a eat the biscuits all day long kind of a day. Missy Chow, you and Kirby understand what I mean when it rains all day long, right?
Well, speaking of biscuits I am getting hungry so I am going on a biscuit safari.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Aw, what sweet fine feathered friends have joined the critter sanctuary! :)

I agree, the cooing sound they make is very peaceful.

I wonder what Vivaldi thinks of the new additions? :)

    Happy "Coos"day! :)

  • Sharkey, you are like my mother, who could nod off in the middle of Times Square during rush hour. Anyway, the love birds are beautiful, and I know they weren't given to Martha to be cat bait. So, are they good luck charms towards Martha's man quest? Hmm...

  • Hi F, S, &GK+ Glue Squad, Thank you sweet, beautiful girls for sharing these photos and great comments about those beautiful white Doves in that great cage in the house! I have never seen any Doves before and am fascinated to get to see them today! We have lots of big white seagulls in our area and they are fun to see also! You sweet girls and Vivaldi look so cute in these photos with the Doves! Black Mama, sure hope James is OK and hope to hear from you real soon! My prayers are with all of you! Maddox, once again you gave us great comments about all of our wonderful Glue Squad friends! Can't recall if I wished Riley Happy Birthday so will wish him Happy Birthday now! Hope all of you buddies are doing well! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello Girls, Vivaldi & Glue Squad Buddies,
What beautiful new friends in Martha's kingdom you have in the doves. They look so nice. Good thing there is a strong wire cage between them and the cats. Vivaldi looks quite hungry. Do they have names?

Thank you all for your advice and help to Mom and I for my piddle riddle in the rain problem. Guess what, it was raining last night and Dad took me on a walk in it. We have no sidewalks, and he kept trying to push me on the grass and I would push back. He walked on the asphalt and I walked on the grass, until I just stopped and would not move.....it was a battle and Dad won. I came home and butt vroomed up a storm and was so proud of myself. Today is something big time called Cabelas---2 in Colorado and Dad and Mom are going. I will catch up on rest. Dad is going fishing tomorrow and you know what that means for me---trout!!! Yahoooooo!!!!

I am so worried about James and Lucinda and the tribe. Mom has been sending cards since my heroine went to the Rainbow Bridge to cheer them up, so I will see The Glue Squad gets it. Oh, and Brutus and Max, I know you were having trouble sending your e-mail to Zoe's Mom, so she posted it again last Friday. Check it out and try again. We will see each other soon. And Gail, I know you are only a 2 legged member of The Glue Squad like Sonya, but I send Sonya my photos and she likes it. You should get your name on the e-mail list to Mama Ann. Just thinking, you could see all our beautiful mugs. Hehehehehehehehehehe!! I am sooo glad you had a great birthday Riley. Food, fun and family, what more could a guy want? Have a GEM of a day all.

    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Dear F&S, GK and all the GS buddies:
Love the new birdies - you guys have now got two turtle doves, just need a partridge in a pear tree! Seriously they sound very relaxing to listen to (I think Sharkey proved that!)but with cats they need a very secure cage!
Black Mama, thank you for letting us know about James, we are all sending healing and concerned thoughts to you all, please let us know when you can how James is doing. If anyone gets the address please send it round the mailing list so we can all send cards. We are thinking about you for sure.
Well the eavestrough guys came yesterday, Me and Lucy were barking up a storm, supervising the work crew and letting Dad and Sam know status every 30 seconds. Poor Riley boy, he doesn't like unexplained noises (along with lawnmowers, whipper snippers, vacuum cleaners and the like)and he went and hid in the basement. Poor boy, he was very glad to see them go. Well, that's all the news that's fit to print today in our little world. Love and beardie bounces to all, Martha (writing), Miz Lu and Riley boy.

  • HI everyone!
Well, Mom is back from the dog show she took her booth to. She saw lots of fluffy dogs called Havanese. She liked them very much, but I don't always get along with fluffy dogs, so it's best she didn't bring any home. While she was gone we had lots of visits from our Uncle Dick, who we love very much, because Dad was working at the Sate Fair.
We haven't had a chance to catch up with everything going on, but do want to send our prays to James. And Francesca Baby: I know that look, but I don't think Miss Martha would appreciate you having Dove Fricasee for dinner anytime soon!!
    A bientot!

  • :-) How nice that Doves are added to the house menagerie! I love Doves and use to have a cage full in Calif. but when we moved to Missouri we could not bring them along because of some law. Now doves come here in WI. into my yard and nest, even have had a nest on our deck... But that's before Kitty came into our lives...there went the doves ;-(

Getting ready to go to Madison to see a new doctor...don't really want to go, but.... :-)

Kitty is out scouting, she knows I'm upset with her throwing up a Chippy on her plate after eating her cat food... Yuck! It's not like we don't feed her, she is overweight as is

James you are in my prayers, as well as Lucinda...praying all will be well.

DWaggers and Glue Squaders have a good day, happy thoughts and all that good stuff.

OK hubbies home from golfing got to run now
    Love and hugs to all,
    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Greetings Francesca, Sharkey, Vivaldi and Glue Squad peeps!
Vivaldi, we love the pictures of you looking longingly at the possibility of lunch! What a hoot! Or would that be a "coo"?
James, Lucinda, Black Mama, Ivan and Ivanka you are in our thoughts and prayers. Max and I know how scary it is for the life squad to come for your Dad. We just don't understand and we want them back home with us. Glue Squad, please let us know how we can send cards.
Ruby, we love your description of the walk and the butt vroom! Every time Mom see us butt vrooming she takes us to the vets and then we go into the "back room". Not fun!
Mom is taking Kayla and Logan to the movies today. They are seeing "Planes". This is their end of summer day out. Next week they start back to school. No more library days for a while.
Must be off....Dad is off today and the weather is doable so it's off to the patio for a snooze.
    Brutus and Max

  • Good morning ladies,
Oh, I do think I could take a nap to the cooing doves, too! They are such pretty birds, that certainly was a thoughtful gift.
We are sending all our prayers to James to get well and our friendship to Lucinda, hope it helps a bit.
It's been so noisy in our neighborhood. We have crews chopping up sections of the streets and laying new concrete. Mimi never knows what street she can drive on to get home. I know how you feel, Riley. Last year construction & landscapers and now the streets! I'm just a bit jumpy these days.
We were worried about the rain at Ruby's house. Hang in there girlfriend. It will pass. Gee, from drought to deluge. Wow...
    Have a great day everybody!
    your pal,
    Rebel

  • Thanks for telling us all about love doves, you two. I really enjoyed reading your blog and looking at the pictures.

    Angela

  • Hello D Wag buddies,
sorry we are so late today but we ran lots of errands, bought cat food and litter and went to the library,etc.etc.
Hope James feels better real soon. Our prayers go out to James, lucinda, Black mama.
    take care all-
watching Shelby and his "swamp dog"
    James Dean and Abby
