A Lesson About Figs

Posted by F&S

There are so many great food items growing around the farm.  Before we went to Maine, we prepared a Daily Wag all about figs.  We hope you enjoy this lesson.

That's right, Sharkey, and Martha says that one of the many joys of the summer harvest is biting into a sweet, juicy, plump fig.

The fig is not a true fruit, in the botanical sense of the word, but a fleshy receptacle housing thousands of tiny fruits.

You can see them when you slice a fig open. Fresh figs are an excellent source of potassium and fiber, and when dried, these nutritional elements are even more concentrated.

In fact, dried figs are so sweet that they were used as a sweetening agent long before sugar was introduced to the world.

The stems and leaves of the fig tree contain a milky, coagulating substance that is said to rid the skin of wrinkles and calluses. In ancient Greece, fig tree branches were used to stir cheese, accelerating the coagulation process.

Be sure to pick only the ripest figs because they will not ripen once they're picked. They are also highly perishable and need to be used quickly.

  • Good morning everyone
Figs, can't say as I ever ate one. Goofy Karen said she wants the stems and leaves cause she thinks they will take away her wrinkles. Silly woman. Hehehehehehehe
What a nice day it was yesterday. Today it is supposed to rain. But, weather reporters are not always right.
I wonder what is on the agenda at Skylands today. It is supposed to be a vacation but I bet Martha is busy doing something. I don't think she can just sit and relax for a whole day.
Well, no deck time as it is the middle of the night so I guess I will go back to bed.
    Have a great day everyone
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • ..figs..hmmm..not fig country where I live..so with that, I am sneaking out of the house before Ivan and Ivanka wake up and see me..later..Black Mama p.s. hope all my buddies have a fun day!

  • Good Morning F & S

My mom LOVES figs! In fact this year she bought herself a small fig tree (and I mean small) and planted it in our yard. It stands around 3 feet tall and she is SO happy she has 4 figs growing. She didn't think she would get any the first year so she is a very happy camper :) When she was in Italy with her sister they would stop and roadside stands and buy figs then go back to their room and have figs, cheese and wine. I on the other hand would stick with the cheese and wine ;)

We have contractors here at the house today. Dad said this should be it for a while. That will make me happy all T-Bone does is bark which gives me a horrible headache.

Well let me go supervise the workers. Have a great day!

    Zoe

  • Good morning ladies,
Figs, schmigs...not for me, thank you very much.
    Quiet day for me.
    Great day to all!
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
Sounds like Skylands must be a fun place for the vacation and Mama Martha's birthday, but I am so glad you thought to do some photos ahead for us while you are away. I think I would have to have a fig in a fig newton. I am trying more foods, even tried a zucchini last night---ate the gravy off and spit out the zucchini. Mom says I am sooooo silly. I heard talk of getting the pool out, warming the water for a bath later. We will see. Zoe, glad you and Mom were cooking over the weekend--yummo! Kirby, Kirby, Kirby, more tail biting, oh no. James Dean, it is good the furry kids at your Mom's work have her when it is storming. Thunderstorms can be a scary thing. Brutus and Max, this Blues and BBQ thing sounds tasty and fun. Bet your folks enjoyed it. Baby Favor, have a great time on the trip. Enjoy all your friends. Black Mama, Ivan and Ivanka, I freaked Mom out with going crazy last night over a raccoon in our back 40. I just was letting him know not to come into my immediate kingdom. When I started barking at him and carrying on he stood dead in his tracks (there was a fence between us, mind you) and acted like he was invisible. Dad got him to leave. How do you all stay calm when you see them? And now for Dixie Boy (I really fell in love with your proper name of Dixon), I must say, my heart went pitter patter when you said WOW. Just thinking of you my heart goes a flutter. Oh well, better go patrol the kingdom. Rebel, has Mimi been on any new retail therapy sessions? Dudley, how is everyone your way--any nice long, walks with Mom lately, or has it been too hot? Our first Broncos pre-season game is Thursday night--yahooo, a party. Martha, Riley, and Lucy, are there football teams in Canada? If not, you can root for my Broncos, o.k.? Everyone have a GEM of a day.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, WOW! I have never seen figs and sure would love to taste one! How great that Ryan and Roger were able to repot more of those fig trees Martha got from a friend! You sweet, beautiful girls sure have fun helping Ryan and Roger! Was it too hot for GK to be out there with you that day?! Bet all three of you are having fun at Skylands with Martha! Have another great day! Ruby, I forgot to thank you for your fabulous comments you gave Martha on her blog about The Daily Wag-marvelous! All of your comments are outstanding! Loved reading the comments from the rest of you again yesterday and will enjoy them again today! Was fun to hear from Maddox and Black Mama already this morning! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hi everyone,
Yes, I'm here. Mis got her day off moved to Wednesday, and it's East with her sister to walk another barrier island. I'll just hold down her bed until she gets back!
Figs, yuck!!! Mis is a southern girl, but figs are not her thing. Way tooo sweet. Zoe, Mis said forget the cheese and just get a good bottle of wine, sit back and enjoy!
Maddox, Mockingbirds are large birds in shades of gray. They mock other birds and sounds they hear, which can be quite confusing. They are about the size of Blue Jays and swoop worse than Swallows. They come after you, in fact yesterday, Mis saw one relentlessly chasing a Rabbit out of its territory. Protecting their young I'm sure! Jays are still far worse. They are much more aggressive and bold.
Okay, time to get to work
    Have a great day friends!
    Dixie Boy

  • Hello Francesca, Sharkey, GK and all the Glue Squaders!
We only eat figs with the Newtons wrapped around them. Those are yum-o!
We wonder what Martha's farm would be if you girls and GK were not there to supervise. Probably a big mess! hahahaha
This is Mom's last vacation day. Bummer dude. So it will be back to business as usual tomorrow.
But the weather is still great. The windows are still open and the A/C is still off!
Hope everyone has a wonderful Tuesday!
Oh, by the way, we live about 30 miles north of Cincinnati, so with the Bengals being the hometown team we don't really have much to cheer about. Another bummer, dude.
Off to supervise Dad as he mows.
    Pugs and kisses
    Brutus and Max.

  • ..yeah, football season..I am in Seahawk country..about 2 and half hours from Seattle..yikes..I hear the tractor starting up..hope james is taking me and Ivan for a ride..better get out there..later, Ivanka

  • Hello Sharkey, Francesca, and my GS buddies,
Wow nice fig tree care pictures. Mom used to eat fig newtons, now she has yet to find gluten free ones.
Abby busy today surveying her comfy bed, chair, carpet kingdom. She is a big napper on these days off!
Barbeque and the Blues? Maybe the glue squad could go crash Brutus and max's party! I bet Mis and Dixie Boy would have fun, Ruby and Lynn could bring warrior cookies, Black Mama and Kitty could go hunting, Zoe could show how to do a pool party, Maddox, Kirby and Missy Chow could have Chow Chow group photos, Dudley and Rebel could exchange duck stories... Just thinking... We cannot wait for the patriots game on Friday!
Have a great day glue squad buddies-
James Dean the persian boy cat
