What's Lurking in That Tree?

Posted by Francesca

I recently blogged about how I drove the Kawasaki around the farm checking on all of the sprinklers watering the gardens.  After my inspection, I continued my drive when I spotted something quite large lurking in a tree.  I was rather surprised by what I found.

Now that I've finished my sprinkler inspection, I suppose I should return the Kawasaki and go back the house. I wouldn't want anyone to worry about where I might be.

Wait a minute, something is rustling in that tree, and it looks too big to be a squirrel!

Well, judging from its size, it appears to be an immature red-tailed hawk!

These amazing birds are skillful hunters, preying on small animals, like squirrels, chipmunks, and rodents.

They're very intelligent and are easily trained, making them a favorite for falconry. Falconry is the hunting of wild quarry in its natural state and habitat by means of a trained bird of prey.

I wonder what this hawk is doing sitting in this tree? Perhaps he's chasing a squirrel? That would be encroachment on my turf!

Oh good! He's gone. I better get back to the house and make sure the new kittens are safe inside!

Oh dear, I see some large birds running around! I hope the chickens didn't get out!

Those are no chickens - they're wild turkeys! When most Americans think of turkey, they think of Thanksgiving, but these game birds were hunted year round by Native Americans.

I read that they ate their eggs as well as their meat, drying extra meat for jerky to eat during the winter. They used the feathers in rituals and in their headgear. Such resourceful people!

  • Holy Cow, err Hawk, all the action on the farm! :)

Not a dull moment to be had. Marlin Perkins would have a field day visiting the farm. :)

Another rainy day here in New Hampshire. It seems the pattern of summer so far is rain and humidity.

Happy weekend to all the gluies and their furry pals! :)

  • Good morning everyone,
Just look what lazy bones Sharkey and GK missed out on by not going along with you Francesca. Instead of seeing it first hand they will have to read about it Beautiful hawk. And those wild turkeys are huge.
It was a busy week again. We are working on the kennel. It will have indoor outdoor runs and right now we are working on the roofs that go over them. We have one side of the building done and today we are framing out the other side. It is weird cause I think we are almost done but then Karen says all the stuff that has to be done yet and then it seems like there is a lot of work yet. All this thinking is making my head spin. I will have to go out to the deck to calm my brain down. Hehehehehehehe.
Love to all and be happy and safe this weekend

  • Good Morning F & S

Miss me ;) Blame my mother - too much work and not enough time for me - I'm not a happy camper.

Watch out for those hawks they can be nasty and they scream like crazy!!! Maybe he'll take out a turkey or two those suckers are ugly not to mention they poop like crazy and it's big!! Mom had to wash down the deck furniture because they decided to visit - gross stuff.

So I had a boring week, mom was leaving the house at 5:30 every morning and not coming home until 6. Dad and I just putzed around the house taking care of things on the "Honey Do" list. I'm hoping she'll have time for us this weekend, maybe it will rain and we can spend the entire time in the kitchen :)

Well gotta go, I was given 10 minutes and now she's outta here. Have a great weekend everyone!!

  • Good morning Francesca!
I can't believe that Brutus and I are the first Glue Squaders this morning.
It was a good thing you took the Kawasaki for an extended trip. Think of all the things you would have missed. Up there on Martha's farm you find many interesting creatures. We have a hawk here as well, but I don't think it's has a red tail. But it certainly can fly fast!
Hope you, Sharkey, GK and all the cats have a great weekend.
Wait, did you say you have new kittens? When will we see pictures?
    Pugs and kisses
    Max (Brutus is still sleeping)

  • Hello Francesca & all my Glue Squad Buddies,
Well, it's TGIF. Thank goodness. We are closer to getting MY house back to normal. More on that later.

Franny, you must be careful when hawks are around. I heard that on occasion they tried to swoop in on Basil. You have many creatures in your kingdom for sure. Now on to the part I seem to have missed somewhere. NEW KITTENS AT THE HOUSE----what, OMG, I somehow missed this tidbit of information. Does the rest of the Glue Squad know of this? KIRBY, don't forgot to tell us newbies about how you are a hero, and Abby I hope you are home and feeling better. Riley, what have you been into? Martha and Lucy, tell all!! Dudley and Missy, I am hoping you are cool and getting to go on walks. Rebel, cuddle with Mimi and Papa and relax over the weekend. Maybe golf for Zoe's Mom, and Maddox, still overseeing the kennel work? Jimmy and Kitty and Black Mama relax and bird watch for sure. Dixie Boy, I hope you enjoyed your day with Mom and the cousins--tell all. Brutus and Max, staying cool and calm!!! Delia, Sonya and Gail, I hope you have fun and frolick over the weekend. Hugs to all and have a GEM of a weekend.
    Love & licks,
    Ruby

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, Sweet Francesca, you sure did have fun driving that great Kawasaki around the farm some more and finding that large red-tailed hawk high up in that tree! We see some big eagles and hawks also where we live and lots of smaller birds in our trees! Seeing those wild turkeys was fascinating, also! I haven't seen any of those at all! The farm sure looks beautiful in these photos! Hope you have a great weekend and hug Sharkey and GK for me! Haven't seen any comments from the Glue Squad yet so will check back later! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Good morning Frannie,
We have a red-tailed hawk, too! Boy, does it get quiet when he's flying around the neighborhood. I can tell when he's had lunch 'cause I find a pile of feathers in the grass.
We're taking a day trip to Indiana to look at some of the covered bridges. There won't be too much browsing in shops 'cause I'll be along, but there will be lots of walking around. I reminded Mimi that she needs to get bug repellant to keep the ticks away.
Maddox, I bet Karen is so happy to have the new kennel open! I bet you are too.
Well, to all my Glue Squad friends, have a great weekend. "See" you all on Monday.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
We have a lot of hawks around where I live. I can always tell when one is around because the birds sit very still in the trees. One came right on my porch one time trying to get to a little bird. I just wish they would take some of those squirrels away; too many of them here now. I can tell when the cat is in the back yard too. The squirrels tell on him by making funny noises. The birds even have a noise they make when a snake is around. Gee, just listen to the birds, and other animals, and you can tell what is happening around them. Don’t listen so some of my neighbors dogs; they bark just to hear their head rattle. Have a good, and safe, weekend all.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello Francesca, Ruby,Maddox, Missy chow, Dudley, Kitty, Rebel,Zoe and all my buddies,
Another great post with Francesca bird watching and doing her rounds of the farm. The hawk looks scary, have to make sure he stays away from the smaller animals on the farm. We have big wild turkeys too and baby "turkettes".
Abby is home and starting to feel better! She is still on special medicine but can be loose in the house. She has to stay cool away from the sun. Mom took her for a walk at the duck park yesterday since it feels like fall outside, much cooler temperatures.
Zoe, hope you have a wonderful weekend with your Mom. Rebel, hope you enjoy time with your family too. Maddox, you are working so hard with the kennel construction, maybe R and R and deck time? Dudley, you are always thinking of others. Missy Chow, hope its cool up near Boston for you for lots of puppy fun! I already had "brushies" today, really shedding. New kittens???? Purrrs and hugs to all my glue squad buddies, especially Black Mama, Kitty, Vivaldi and Empress Tang, and Fuzzy Butt too.
Ruby must be doing a happy post paint dance!
    James Byron Dean

  • Ahhh Franny pants out surveying the farm to make sure all is well. I think Sharkey and G.K. need some extra chores to make up for missing their duty assignments.

What's this about NEW KITTENS? You doggies better watch out, I think the cats are planning a feline rebellion and are adding new kittens to reinforce their ranks.

Busy Moms, new kennels, all around playing around, I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!

  • ..wow..baby kitties..can hardly wait to see those guys..yes, Ivan and Ivanka are still here..their folks called and asked if they could stay a few more days, since they were having such a good road trip, we, of course, said sure...we all went for a walk to the river and spied on the otters and beavers and even a mink zipped in front of us..Ivan and Ivanka are so well mannered, never chase anything, unless told to ..the naughty one (Cora-Belle) chased absolutely everything and never behaved for one second...I am going to help dead-head some flowers today and hang up laundry, so I better get going!, love, black Mama p.s...Lucinda laughed, she had not thought of Marlin Perkins and Jim Fowler and Wild Kingdom for years..all my buddies have a good week-end!
