The Lilies Are Starting To Bloom!
Posted by F&S
Ryan, the gardener, told us Frenchies that the lilies in the cutting garden were blooming beautifully. We were very happy to hear this because these lilies were all relocated in the spring and we were wondering how they would fair. Yesterday was hot as blazes, but we wanted to check the garden out.
1 Francesca, I'm very happy to see that the lilies that were transplanted from the old cutting garden to this new one in the spring are blooming so nicely.
2 You're right, Sharkey! Lilium is a genus of herbaceous flowering plants growing from bulbs, all with large prominent flowers.
3 When Martha and Ryan decided to swap gardens, all of the lily bulbs were dug up and planted here. They seem to like this new environment very much because they look so healthy. Maybe there's better drainage here.
4 Many of these lilies are Asiatic, a very hardy kind that come in a wide range of colors. Please excuse my face - it's very hot!
5 Unlike other highly fragrant varieties, Asiatics are generally unscented and are mostly upfacing.
6 Asiatics are one of the most popular lilies for northern gardens.
7 Another popular lily is the Oriental, which have colossal blooms atop tall, graceful plants.
8 Orientals come in vibrant colors with many mixed, like this one. Their blooms are breathtaking and the perfume is intoxicating. Just watch out for the pollen on the anthers at the ends of the stamens. It really stains.
