The Lilies Are Starting To Bloom!

Posted by F&S

Ryan, the gardener, told us Frenchies that the lilies in the cutting garden were blooming beautifully.  We were very happy to hear this because these lilies were all relocated in the spring and we were wondering how they would fair.  Yesterday was hot as blazes, but we wanted to check the garden out.

Francesca, I'm very happy to see that the lilies that were transplanted from the old cutting garden to this new one in the spring are blooming so nicely.

You're right, Sharkey! Lilium is a genus of herbaceous flowering plants growing from bulbs, all with large prominent flowers.

When Martha and Ryan decided to swap gardens, all of the lily bulbs were dug up and planted here. They seem to like this new environment very much because they look so healthy. Maybe there's better drainage here.

Many of these lilies are Asiatic, a very hardy kind that come in a wide range of colors. Please excuse my face - it's very hot!

Unlike other highly fragrant varieties, Asiatics are generally unscented and are mostly upfacing.

Orientals come in vibrant colors with many mixed, like this one. Their blooms are breathtaking and the perfume is intoxicating. Just watch out for the pollen on the anthers at the ends of the stamens. It really stains.

  • Francesca and Sharkey, thank you for sharing this blog. Ryan does a great job. Of course, it's good that he has you two supervising. You look very hot....and not in the good way. We are guessing that GK decided to stay in the cool house. We can't blame him one bit. We run outside, do our business, check out the parameter for those darn squirrels and rabbits and run back in the house. No sun-bathing or outdoor naps for us!
The weather man says we might have thunderstorms and high winds this afternoon. I, Brutus, have become one with the basement way too many times this summer. Enough is enough!
We saw you, Francesca, on Martha's blog with all ad sales peeps, but where was Sharkey and GK?
And did you get to taste any of that great looking food?
Gotta go....we hear the trash truck...time for a good bark!
    Pugs and kisses.
    Brutus and Max.

  • Good Morning F & S

I get that same face when it gets hot, I actually curl my tongue - I'm so cute :)

We've got those lilies coming up all over the place they are so pretty. Mom is amazed every year we have one that comes up from under a rock. We had some boulders placed around the pool in the fall a few years back and mom forgot all about the lilies planted below. But no boulder could keep it from blooming - it made it's way from under the big old rock. I think mom said it's a Star Gaizer - really pretty.

Rain here today so lots of snooze time for me. This Saturday we are hosting the grandchild's second birthday, Allie turns 2. You know what that means - snacks for old Zoe. It's great being small I can following them around and gently remove any food they are holding in their hands. I'll have 3 little ones here to follow, I bet I'll have an upset tummy come Sunday ;)

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
You both look quite hot out with the lilies. All of you are very beautiful. But you don't have to tell me about hot. 97 yesterday and the rest of the week. I would love any rain. I am really glad your lilies did so well after the transplant. Great job.

Zoe, I am glad your tummy is doing better enough for you to start thinking about another party. Yahoo!!! What fun with all the food low to the ground for you. Brutus and Max, I am with you and go out for a few minutes and back in to lay on the tile. I decided to not pout about Dad fishing, and Mom and I are having fun. I even did some "cc" time with her yesterday. Today I will do the same and relax and Dad and a trout are just around the corner coming home tomorrow.

Have a GEM of a day all.
    Love and licks, Ruby

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I didn’t make a comment yesterday; Daddy said I should stay away from his computer. He told me that my paws were wet and that wouldn’t be good for the keyboard. He explained that water on the keyboard could damage it. I didn’t know that; did you? What I want to know is why he took me out in all that wet outside. Smells like something going on around here. I’ll get to the bottom of it. With my short legs, I’m practically there already. I guess by now you can see it has been raining here again. I think I’ll take a nap before it starts another thunderstorm. Had another two inches of rain last night. Will this ever stop?
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Good morning ladies,
I am waiting for our lilies to bloom. Mimi gets nervous when I am snooping around them. She's afraid I'll break them off (like the ducklings did to one). I assured her that I would be careful.
Hot & humid here today, we have a new pot of black eyed susans to plant today and another plant that I don't know what it is. We'll be hot & sweaty (well Mimi will be). Have a great day everybody.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hello F&S, GK and all the GS buddies:
Sorry we didn't post yesterday, but Riley and Lucy were sick - they are both coughing (Kennel cough) and trying to clear their throat and making horrible noises. It doesn't seem to be affecting them any other way, they are still eating, drinking etc so hopefully they aren't feeling too bad. We are all going to the vet if it doesn't clear, although today they seem better, not so much coughing, snorting etc. Riley also has taken to drinking from the pond - bad news for the digestive system - Mom has to keep an eye on him to keep him away from the pond, even if we have water outside he still wants to drink from the waterfall. I, Martha am fine, I had kennel cough when I was one and then got vaccinated for it for a couple of years. Maybe I have an immunity now. Whatever, I'm good!
Seems like the weather is crazy everywhere, Ruby needs rain, we would like some sun (we gots lots of rain, and heavy, humid, oppressive air). Maybe we could export the rain to people who need it?? I will have to think about that one!
Well, gotta go, Dad's got a dr. appointment and Mom needs to get to work.
Love and beardie bounces, Martha, Lucy and Riley boy.

  • Morning Girls & Glue Squad Buddies - Finally, computer time for me this morning. The lilies are so pretty and the colors; with both of you sitting there, it would make a wonderful picture for a calendar - a calendar for all seasons, hum...may have something there :) ...Well, got myself a little timeout the last couple of days..just call it "the puppy in me"..how long can I continue with that excuse???? We had a small break in the weather the last couple of days but I'm sure the humidity will return along with isolated t-storms. It's overcast so far this morning. Ruby, you Dad will be home before you know and just think of what he will have for you :) ..Zoe, just follow the little ones this weekend, I'm sure you will get some treats. Kitty, it's been too hot to stay out too long, don't worry your Mom. Better run, Mom needs the computer..Hope all my friends are doing well and staying out of trouble just like me - NOT... ;)

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • "Lily of the Valley" :)

The lilies look to be blooming right nicely at the new location! Maybe some of the critter 'fertilizer' is helping! :)

I love the two tone colors that emerge! :)

Hopefully the weather has cooled down. We are trapped in a humid zone for weeks! Yuck!

    Happy Wednesday to all..

  • Hi Franny, Sharkey, Dudley,Ruby,Maddox and all my glue squad buddies,
Nice to see you girls helping out with the flowers. We have tiger lilies by the garden, very pretty orange flowers. I love to smell all the roses and flowers but the lilies are too tall for me.
Riley and Lucy, certainly hope you feel better soon! Too hot for any of my friends not to feel well. Heat and humidity again. Looks like we might get another thunder boomer too Kirby. Rebel, hope you enjoy your gardening and planting the black eyed susan flowers. Missy Chow, that puppy stuff can go on for years you know.. Zoe, hope your tummy is much better today. We have great produce from NJ and Mom says it is Stronger than the storm produce :) .
Kitty, purrrs to you from Jimmy. Black Mama, let us know about any new pup news. Maddox, hope you are getting lots of deck times. We might go to Pet Smart!
    high paws to all,
    Abby the pug/peke/frenchie

  • What great Lilies! And great photos of you girls, you look splendid amongst the colors, even with the pink tongues hanging out ;-) This year my Lilies were very late...when we came home from Kansas I was surprised to see Lilies and colors I never knew I had :-)

Good to see the Glue Squad today...take care and shelter from the heat or rain whatever the day.

    Hugs to all ~ delia
Meuwws-prurrs to JD & Black Mama, plus my sweet buddy Ruby

  • ..hi buddies..we have some lillies here at the farm/ranch..and it is rather hot and dry here in my part of s.w. Washington...but me and the tribe go down the trail to the river and have a sip of water..Lucinda finally cleared the trail to the river, which is right in the front yard..we knew someone who would go lay in in the river on hot days (coraBelle, the naughty)..Ivan and Ivanka run up here every day and help around the farm/ ranch..wow they are big shepherds ..they patrol around the property like it was their place and should someone come to visit they are here in an instant to check them out..a 2 mile run is nothing for them..we love those guys..Lucinda and James are thinking a shepherd..then there was talk of another border collie (Ivy, the wonder dog..)and a another heeler..these people are nuts!! over and out

  • Well, it happened again this afternoon. Thunderboomers, lightening, wind and rain. Lots and lots of rain. Since the 1st of July we've gotten almost 6 inches of rain!
When the storms marched through this afternoon Dad was at work and Mom was in bed (she's not lazy, she works nights!) Dad apparently forgot to open the basement door for Brutus so he knocked (scratched) franticly on the bedroom door. Mom finally woke up and let him in. It took a while but he finally calmed down. Poor Brutie. He should be like me and just sleep through all that mess.
The weatherman says we could see some more storms later tonight. Before Mom left for work she opened the basement door and left the light on just in case.
Gotta go...someone is walking up the street and I have to remind them just who owns this 'hood!
    Pugs and kisses.
    Max....always on duty.
