The Heat Wave Continues

Posted by F&S

We don't know about where you live, but we are experiencing a major heat wave.  Dogs have to be really careful in extreme heat because we can easily suffer from heat stroke.  Dogs have only two basic means of cooling down - panting and sweating through the pads of our feet.  In this heat, neither is very helpful.

Sharkey, it's hot as blazes! Why did we want to come outside?

Francesca, there's not much to do in this extreme heat except be still.

Did you know that smushed-faced dogs, like us French bulldogs should be especially careful in the heat? Our small tracheas and long soft palates can make it difficult for us to cool down by panting.

Should we make a dash for that squirrel? Even the shaded grass feels hot on our feet! I think I know where I want to be.

And G.K., too. With all of their amazing fur, Chows can
progress into heat stroke very quickly and they should only go outside to do you know what.

  • Hi gang,
Just a quick post to say I am sorry I am behind again but I will catch up within a day or two. I am fine. But between taking care of Karen and supervising the work on the kennel, I am a very busy boy right now. I don't even know when I had deck time lately. Karen had oral surgery and she has over 60 stitches in her mouth. Ouch!!!!! On top of that we are putting a new coat of paint on the fencing and it is very very hot outside right now so I have to make sure the workers stay cool. Tough job but somebody has to do it. Hehehehehehehe
I will play catch up with everyone as soon as I can.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good Morning F & S

First off Maddox you give Karen a big kiss from me, I hope she feels better soon. Oh and don't kiss her face I'm sure she is really sore.

F & S this heat is a killer and it's suppose to last right through the weekend. Sophie claimed the a/c vent in the kitchen and T-Bone prefers the one by our front door. My water bottle is filled and ready to squirt at all times in this heat. Dad stays inside so I'm right by his side. I have to watch him in this heat his COPD doesn't do well when it's this hot.

Today we have workers coming to paint the railings on the deck. I have the cooler packed with water and ice for the guys. I'm glad I don't have to work out in this heat.

    Stay cool everyone!

    Zoe

  • Very helpful post. I am a 13 year old Frenchie living in NYC. As a breed, we Frenchies seem to have become extremely popular here. However, judging from what I see, there are a lot of Frenchie owners that have not educated themselves about our special needs and issues. This heat is definitely one of them, and it is worsened by the fact that our paws are on hot concrete and our bellies close to the heat radiating up from the sidewalk. In the dog days of summer, Frenchies should stay in, and stay cool.

  • The power of suggestion from your soporific blog has made me very sleepy...zzzzzzzzz

  • I'm Malcolm Fawcett's Mom. While reading your blog and attempting to author an insightful comment, he fell asleep. Sorry.

  • Hello Girls, G.K. & all my Glue Squad Buddies,
I do not like heat unless I am in where it is cool. I go out and sunbathe for a minute or two and then in to the tile and air conditioning. Maddox, OMG, 60 stitches in Karen's mouth, she must hurt soooo bad. I am glad she has you and Mammy Jean to care for her. Root Beer floats, ice cream sundaes---I can taste it all. We had rain yesterday morning, and guess what, Dad took me for a walk in it to help me not be scared. I have another focus at the moment. The folks are painting, and all the furniture is in the garage---my couch I lay on----geez!!!! This is sooo weird. Puck, I am with you, a lot of people are really stupid on caring for animals in the heat. My Mom stops the car and tells them so, to help the animals you see. Well, better get to lounge time before the painting starts. I am getting this Calgon Take Me Away thing that Mom says all the time---it means just to relax, I think. Have a GEM of a day all, and stay cool, calm and carry on.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • This week is our first BIG HEAT here in Central NC. And with all the rain we've had, the humidity is right there with the temps. Everyone be careful! Getting too hot is no fun for either animal or human. Those marble floors really look inviting GK. I'd be sprawled across one in no time.
Wow, a lot of you have some very important jobs taking care of your humans. I take care of Mis when she has a migraine. I stay quite and sleep right beside the bed. I don't even complain if I don't get lunch on time. Right now she's barely home. Work, Work, Work!!! Me and the cousins are getting a lot of alone time. At least it in the AC. Got to go. Mis has Work, Work, Work!
    Dixie Boy
PS....Ruby, you can have all the Duck Soup you want. They live too close to WATER!

  • F & S stay cool!!! ;-) It's hard to believe people can't use common sense when it comes to heat and animals...I'll forgo the venting on this but do have my thoughts :-(
Maddox you be a good dog and take good care of Karen, give her a loving lick for us.
Kitty spent all day laying on the deck in the heat I just don't get it, and today we are going to have record heat and she is outside on the deck sleeping. Thank Goodness we have so many trees. I keep the inside house at 74 so not too cold for her, but she only comes in for a few minutes and wants back out, staying out all night somewhere :-(
Thanks Ruby, Lynn, Jan and DDR for checking my story on my horses...I appreciate this(for some reason guest comments are late showing)

Have a safe and cooling off day!

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I like GK’s idea of staying inside and napping on a cool floor. Fans are all right for you two but my long fur moves around in the breeze and keeps me awake. Feels like bugs crawling on me and I keep jumping to grab them. It has stopped raining for a while; only a quarter of an inch yesterday. Now it is so humid, and hot, that when I go outside my fur gets moist. Now that’s what I call humid. Daddy has been polishing on the trailer a little but he can’t make much progress. Seems that the polishing cloth soaks up moisture and makes the polish hard to remove. When it is dry enough, it’s too hot to work outside. Should be into the 90’s today. Remember this one thing: Summer has just started; stay cool my friend.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, It sure is hot there at Bedford for you 3 wonderful buddies to go outside for very long! I love seeing all 3 of you and so glad you are getting much cooler inside where you won't get heat strokes! It's not that hot here but could be 88 degrees today and I will stay inside to stay cooler, also! We might even get a thunder storm later today and maybe get much cooler! Maddox, you sure are doing a great job taking care of Karen and sure hope she gets better real soon! Missed hearing from you and hope you are OK also! My prayers are with Karen and you! Zoe, my prayers are with you, too! Sure hope you, Sophie, & T-Bone stay cool and your family, also! Please thank Ann for her fun email! Puck, nice to hear from you and hope you stay cool, also! Baby Favor, say Happy Birthday to Millie! Delia, loved your beautiful website! Hug Kitty for me! Sonya, stay cool in that humidity! Brutus and Max, I don't like thunder and lightening either! Black Mama, glad you got that left over steak! Hope the rest of you are doing well! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Greetings from the VERY HOT Southwest Ohio.
It's just me, Max, today. Dad just took Brutus for his "day of beauty". (Mom's words, not mine) I'm laying low hoping she doesn't decide to plop me in the tub for my own beauty day. Yuck-o.
But with this heat....and nothing but 90's for the next week....Brutus should be very happy. He will have his fur cut down to Beagle length.
Maddox, I'm sure you are taking care of your Mom. 60 stitches...wow! Puck, you are right on. We Pugs and Frenchies are lucky to breath in normal conditions, much less all this heat. Zoe, I understand about watching out for Dads. My Daddy has breathing issues plus heart problems. He is right now out there mowing! I think he should be in this nice air conditioned house with me, but noooo.
Must be off now....can't stay too long on the computer, it's next to the bathroom...Mom might see me and get ideas.
    Pugs and kisses!
    Max...always on alert!

  • I see it's loafin' time at the farm!

I know the heat wipes me out! I feel zapped and don't have any energy.

It's been hot and humid here in NH. Yuck!

    Be safe my furry friends..
    gail

  • Good morning ladies & G.K.,
    I'm with ya'll today...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • It's hot all over. Glad that everyone has loving humans to take care of them. You three have the right idea, snooze the day away under the cool fan breeze. Karen no talking for you just take it easy please!

Hi Puck, you stay cool in NYC! Wow a guest appearance from Malcom's Mom Sue, very cool. Hey Brutus and the Beast, I'm originally from Oxford are you anywhere near there like Cincy if you don't mind me asking. Everyone stay cool and have a great day.

  • ..Maddox take good care of our pal, Karen,..we love her...the rest of my glue squad buddies stay cool..that goes for my people buddies too...over and out, Black Mama and tribe

  • Hey Sonya! We would be almost neighbors! We live in Lebanon, in Warren County! That's just one county over from Oxford.

Well, it happened! For some reason since Brutus had a bath and his hair cut....he does look good and he says he feels much better...Mom and Dad decided I needed a bath. Boy oh boy, did I try to avoid that! But a Pug doesn't have much say with two adults.
Don't tell them, but I do feel better especially after they brushed me.
    But mums the word!

Gotta go....I hear someone in the kitchen!

    Max...always on the alert!

  • Oh dear Francesca Baby, you and your family take really good care of yourselves. It has finally gotten hot here in Milwaukee, so we are staying inside most of the time, except for quick piddle breaks. Mom is on jury duty or else I know she would let me play with the water monster and that would help me cool off. It's very funny-- Millie thinks the water from the water monster will really kill her, so she runs away. Roxy doesn't mind the WM in the backyard but hates the WM on the porch. I am ready to attack them all! And of course, we always have our Auntie Ellen's fancy Cool Bling Coats to wear if we have to go out someplace in the heat.
I hope Miss Karen feels better soon, Maddox; give her some gentle kisses from us!
    A bientot!!

  • My "smush-faced" English Bulldog, Magoo, knows exactly how you feel. We are currently in a heat wave, but luckily we have air conditioning and a pool so our whole family can keep cool. :)
