Rose of Sharon on the Pergola

Posted by Sharkey

Francesca and I are both lovers of flowers and especially love walking through the pergola on the farm.  Different varieties of flowers bloom at different times of the year, so there is always something pretty blossoming for us to look at!

With the high temperatures and humidity levels, it's amazing that flowers keep blooming. In this weather, I sure begin to wilt myself!

These Hibiscus syriacus, or more commonly known as Rose of Sharon, do very well in the heat as long as they receive regular waterings.

The flowers have more petals. Are they Rose of Sharon too?

Why yes, Francesca, these are also Rose of Sharon. The term actually refers to a broad variety of flowers.

I see, so these are still in the Hibiscus syriacus family, but instead of having one set of petals, they have an extra lacy ring in the center.

I just love learning about flowers, Sharkey. They are one of my favorite things about living on the farm!

  • Greetings from Lebanon, Ohio!
Sorry we didn't comment Tuesday. Like we said, Mom and Dad are on vacation and the computer time is limited.
Loved the Tuesday post about all the edible flowers. We knew about some, but not all. Francesca and Sharkey are sooooo knowledgeable!
Our neighbor has Rose of Sharon and Mom has told Dad she would like some for our yard. If Dad plants all the flowers, trees and shrubs that Mom wants, there won't be any room for Maxie and me!
Dixie Boy, we understand about your Prey Drive. And we are glad Pungo forgave you.
And speaking of kittens, Francesca and Sharkey started all the talk about kittens at Marthas' farm!
We keep waiting for more news.
Hey, we still have one question....why the name Glue Squad?
Must be off....we are writing this in the dark because Mom and Dad are asleep. Shhhhhh!
They are off to "Amish country" today. Wherever that is we hope it means Maxie and I will get treats! We understand that Jennifer, our human sister-in-law will come by after work to let us outside to do our natural stuff today. That means Mom and Dad will not be home until way late today. They will have a lot of making up to do tomorrow!
    Pugs and kisses

  • Good morning everyone,
As for the kittens, remember when Martha got those two little kittens way back when? I think those are the kittens the girls were talking about. Speaking of those kittens, we haven't seen them in a while. I wonder what they look like now. Maybe the girls can get recent pictures of them that would be nice.
Flowers, flowers everywhere on the farm. I was thinking. I wonder how many kinds of flowers Martha has on the farm. Francesca and Sharkey, will you ask Martha if she can answer this question for us please?
    They sure are pretty.
Glue Squad, can you believe it is soon August? Where did the summer go? My my.
Well, I for one am going out to get some deck time before the workers show up. I will put an artificial flower on the deck with me so I can partake of the wonderful aroma that comes from it. That is all I can do cause Karen doesn't have a green thumb nor any other fingers that are green. Nada Hehehehehehehe
    Love to all,
    Maddox

If you get this twice that is cause it wouldn't take it the first time.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
The week is half over and I am just now getting some computer time. Mommy and Daddy have been gone, in the mornings, these past few days and I haven’t been able to make the computer work. I wish my paws weren’t so big. I could reach the switch and turn it on without them. Daddy has one of those things called a “mouse” on his desk. Don’t know why he calls it that it doesn’t do anything; just sits there all day long. I know because I’ve watched it and it hasn’t moved one time. Yep Maddox, summer is moving past at a fast pace. Won’t be long until it will be our kind of weather. More nap time on the porch for us.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Morning Girls, GK & Glue Squad Buddies, I've missed a couple of days, boy, the days sure do fly by. Only have a couple of minutes, Mom has a dentist appointment this morning and I always see her off at the door. GK, looks like you had fun on Monday, peasant dog, I don't think so, but hope you got something to share with the girls. F & S, you have been doing a great job checking on all the flowers. I didn't know that some where eatable, I'll have to tell Mom. Maddox, I've been trying very hard to be good. Both Mom & Dad have said so too. Abby, hope you are feeling much better. Hope all my buddies are doing well. Better run, cool temperatures this morning, maybe more deck time-will check back later.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
I loved looking at today's post from you girls. The photos are award winning quality. #6 could be the 4 legged version of The Thinker. Those Rose of Sharon are beautiful---it gives me a thought for Mom for Mother's Day--her fav color is purple and the lavender would be fantastic. Our Echinacia are such a pretty purple, we love them.

Abby, I am so glad you are yourself again--had the Ruby Gem worried. Rebel, that is so nice of Mimi to take Eli and Bekah to the dentist. You are doing wonderful to have adjusted to kids. I have none to be around so we are a bit nervous still for Halloween. Oh, I have a long time to get in the mode of kids still. Can always look from afar. Brutus and Max and Dixie Boy, I wish you would have sent your e-mail address to Zoe's Mom when she listed it so I could send you my modeling pics. LOL!!! That is the way we send each other photos--it is fun. Look back and send her your address. I would love to see your pics too. And as for the Glue Squad name, that is for our Professor Maddox to explain, since he thought it up. He is sooooo smart. Darn you Kirby for being so modest and not telling me and the rest of the newbies why you are a hero. Where are you anyway? Did I miss you going on vacation. Dudley, any pretty flowers in Mom's garden? How about Riley, Martha and Lucy---how is the pool and pond patrol going? Dixie Boy, you and I really relate I feel from out past before being rescued. I think in addition to your prey drive you and I have a "past drive." In January I bit my Dad---we try not to remember, but that wasn't prey drive, we call it "past drive." Now I am glued to Dad and trust him, but at first I was scared. You are doing very well to have made up to Pungo. Kitty and Jimmy how is the cat world doing? So glad you released the mouse Kitty. I think you are turning into a wild woman this summer, huh? All will calm down when snow arrives I bet Mama Delia. Black Mama any more news on the puppy front? Everyone have a GEM of a day and all my disruption will be a thing of the past by Friday. The carpet is being laid tomorrow, so I won't be able to check in. Think of me doing carpet angels tomorrow night.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • I'm back........ THE GLUE SQUAD
A question arose that I can answer. To all the new members of the Glue Squad, I came up with that name. We are an elite group. We comment on a regular basis to show our support to one another and to let the other members know what we are up to. If one of us is sick, we all worry and show our support and want updates till the member is feeling better. There were members that were posting on the Daily Wag long before I came on but when I did I noticed what a great support group they were and I also noticed how much they supported one another and cared so much for others they have never met. Besides being GK's father, I am a thinker. I am always thinking about things. So, I thought that this group that was commenting on a regular basis is so special that we deserved a special name. I thought of The Glue Squad. We are a group so that is where squad came in and when you think of glue you think of using the glue to bond things together. Hence,The Glue Squad. And everyone seemed to like it so it stuck (like glue) hehehehehehehe
There are a lot of dogs and cats that became part of the Glue squad but they would only post a comment once in a great while. That won't do because how can you show support to one another if you don't keep In touch with them on a regular basis? So, they sort of drop out. If someone becomes a member and doesn't know when they were born, we have a day when we all say what day it should be and then that individual can decide on a date so they have an official birthday. If one of our members passes away, they go to the Rainbow Bridge. It is a special place for Glue Squad members to still be together that passed on and watch over us. We have special days on the DW when it is someone's birthday, Mothers Day, Fathers Day, etc. so, to all the new members of the Glue Squad, just remember that no matter where you came from, a pet store, a breeder, a rescue organization or even from living on the streets, you are all very special and we are one big family who truly care about each other. To be a member of the Glue Squad is as Martha would say, "a good thing"
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Great photo shots of you Frenchies!!! :-) I love Rose of Sharon and had one in California. Love the bluish colored one, never seen that. Thanks for sharing!
Maddox I hope your treating mama Karen well and that she has healed up...Missy Chow hello, and yes I hope Abby is feeling better as well.
All my Glue Squad friends hope the weather where you live is better, as for here, I don't even want to talk about it :-(
Kitty still has been hanging around on the deck all day, then at sunset off she goes...last night she came home 10pm and I did not let her out again...she stayed in all night without any meeeuwing...even after I got up at 4am to feed her, yep at her request with a paw in my face and the pulling of my hair, she stayed in till I got up.

    Hugs and purrrs to all!
    delia & Kitty =^, ,^=

  • Hello to Professor Maddox,
And a special thank your for "The Glue Squad" name. Mom and I are both in tears right now, just remembering and thinking of my guardian angel, Basil, and Precious and Herman the Cat and my heroine, Cora Belle and Mrs. Bosley Chow Chow (Pam, how are you?--let us know please) and so many others that are on the Rainbow Bridge Glue Squad. Professor Maddox you are the smartest professor I know, and Mom and I love you and all our buddies, clear up to God. Thank you all for your friendship.
    Love,
    Ruby and Lynn

  • Oh Sharkey, thank you so much for pointing out the Rose of Sharon plants, Mom just loves them! Francesca Baby, those ones with the extra petals look just like a favorite Rose of Sharon bush that Mom had a long time ago. She would love to plant a few again-- any tips on how to be successful with them????
    A bientot!

  • Hello F,S,GK and all the GS buddies:
What a wonderful flower filled blog today, we absolutely love Rose of Sharon and since Mom has a new garden you know that she will be trying to squeeze one in somewhere. She has a much smaller garden now (but much more manageable) so has to pick and choose her plants very carefully cause space is at a premium!
We have discovered a dog friendly conservation area and have been running off leash in this wonderful place, Riley boy sure has let off some steam this week and Miz Lu is getting some upset because he can run faster and longer than her. Beardies are Scottish herding dogs used to finding sheep in the long grass. We are different from Border collies as we do not herd stock by eye contact, but bounce around like we are on springs in the tall grass and move livestock by "bumping" them. There is lots of tall grass in this place and we are bouncing all over and having a wonderful time. They say girl beardies are rather standoffish and a lot bossy, and the boys are people pleasers and laid back. I, Martha am a little standoffish, but not bossy at all. Miz Lu is not really standoffish, but she has cornered the market on bossy! And Riley boy is just a boy, very excitable, very loving and a true people person. We are a mixed bunch, but all in all do get along on the most part, and love to race around together. I think we have missed the wide open spaces of the country, and its an adjustment to get used to City life again, however we'll get there I'm sure. We have been having some cooler weather which is much appreciated by all, its lovely to sit out in the early morning in the cool, and enjoy the soft summer air. Soon it will be fall, and that is Mom's favorite time of year, so we will be looking forward to it as well. Well, now that I've given everyone a lesson on how Beardies bounce, I'll sign off for today - Love to all from all of us - Martha (writing today), Riley and Miz Lu.

  • Hello Sharkey, Francesca, Missy Chow, Maddox, Dudley and all my buddies,
Thank you Sharkey for showing us the lovely Rose of Sharon. We love the lavendar blooms, so pretty. I wish I could sniff the flowers thru the computer screen. Francesca looks very cute sniffing the flowers too. Sharkey, are you going to show us the vegetable gardens too? Mom is so excited our pumpkin plants are growing now.
Dudley, Ruby, Missy Chow, Ruby, Delia and maddox thank you for all wishing Abby feels better. She has made great progress and just has to avoid high temperatures and people food.
Maddox, have you painted the kennel yet? Mom thinks you should have pictures of all your Champion Chows in the office, you and your son G.K. and the many others. Hope you are relaxing on your deck.
Missy Chow, hope you are getting ready for the Patriots vs. Eagles pre-season game on August 9th. Ruby will be rolling around on new soft carpeting soon! Zoe, are you out by the pool? Dixie Boy, hope you are keeping cool. Off to read Hemmingway, and to ponder the bell who tolls for thee.
Puurrrrrs to kitty, Black Mama, Empress tang and all-
    James Byron Dean

  • Hello everyone, gorgeous flowers ladies but of course since MommyM is such a flower lover. How wonderful she instilled that into the three of you.
