Checking On Produce

Posted by F&S

After our nice long nap, we Frenchies felt it was time to venture out into the heat again.  We decided to check on some of the fruit that's forming on bushes and trees.  We really grow quite a bit of produce for human consumption!

Sharkey, it looks like someone has been very busy picking blueberries.

Francesca, did you know that blueberries are the most popular berry for eating after strawberries?

Sharkey, blueberries are loaded with anti-oxident and I've been told that blueberries, cranberries, and concord grapes are the only three fruits native to North America. Let's go check out some other fruits.

Franny, here are some Key limes growing. Key limes have a unique flavor and aroma and are the key ingredient in Key lime pie.

Sharkey, there are lots of pears on these trees. Pears are among the most popular fruits in the world, and it’s no wonder why! They are an excellent source of fiber and a good source of vitamin C for only 100 calories per serving.

A little known fact about the pear is that it's one of the few fruits that doesn't ripen on the tree. The pear is harvested when mature, but not yet ripe. Left at room temperature, it slowly ripens from the inside out.

Look at Tang inspecting the apples on this tree! The apple is one of the most widely cultivated tree fruits in the world.

With all of the apple orchards in this country, it's interesting to note that apples were brought to North America by colonists in the 17th century. What do you suppose Tang is thinking about?

  • wow..you two are fruit inspectors..we have apples, plums, blackberries and strawberies..of course, after the critters eat their share, there isn't a lot for Lucinda and James..but they say that is okay..wild critters have to eat, too.... a heard of elk was out in the field..showing off their new babies..another field had mom deer and their babies..and we have a zillion baby raccoons racing around the yard..Lucinda says we live on their property..also some baby beaver in the pond at the end of the driveway..we, ferals, like to sneak around and spy on everybody..more talk of a dog..now they are thinking maybe a little dog..hmmm..this could all be very interesting..Karen is right..you have to have dog to love..we ferals are hard to touch let alone cuddle...but we are crafty little guys!!over and out, love, Black Mama

  • Tang is thinking about apple pie, autumn and cooler weather! :)

Such a wonderful variety of fruits, what a yummy fruit salad that would be! :)

It's still toasty here in NH! In fact, summer school is canceled today because of the high heat.

From what I can tell most of the US is under this hot spell.

Be safe if you are out in the elements! :)

  • Good Morning F & S

My mom LOVES blueberries!! She eats them every day if possible. In South Jersey where we live they are in season and moms said they are delicious. I've never tried one don't know if I'd like it - maybe I'll have to ask for a taste.

Black Mama my mom feeds a feral cat she calls Scary. He/she only has one ear and it looks like a scary dude. It's been coming around for a few years now and still won't let mom get too close. Mom can get about 2 feet away and puts her hand out but Scary wants no parts of the touching thing. Scary waits for mom every morning to get fed rain or shine. That cat even gets special treats and only likes certain food - go figure that one out.

HOT HOT HOT again today. But I'm not going to complain too much because before you know it I'll be saying COLD COLD COLD here again today. Why can't we get temps in the low 80's during the day and high 60's at night - that would be just perfect for me :)

Mom went for a swim last night and said the pool is even too warm. Dad has to let some water out and put the hose in. I'm not giving an opinion on the pool because then she'll think I want to swim - NOT.

Keep cool everyone, lots of water, stay in the shade, Frechies get your water bottle out for spritzing and you long hair guys stay indoors.

  • Hello Girls & Empress Tang & Glue Squad Buddies,
We're having a heat wave, a tropical heat wave....can't you just see all us Glue Squad Buddies dancing around in hula skirts singing a tropical heat wave? I crack myself up, OMG!!! Yesterday with all the painting around the swamp cooler, it couldn't get turned on until late.

All the fruit looks interesting. The Ruby Gem here prefers cauliflower. Yep, I don't like the fruit, but love cauliflower. Mom says it looks yummy for her though.

As for all of us, I am with Zoe...stay cool, stay inside, and spritz if needed. Have a GEM of a day and I will be dreaming of butt vrooming in the snow.
    Love & licks,
    Ruby

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Hot, hot, hot, is what I say about this summer. I’m going to stay indoors all day long if I can. It was only in the high 80’s yesterday but the heat index was near 100. Same thing for today it seems. I think Zoe is right. It won’t be long before everyone will be complaining about the cold. Well this is one who will not complain about the cold. Bring it on I say. My Mommy had some fruit trees and blueberry bushes. That didn’t work out too well. The squirrels get to them first. Only problem is that they try to eat them before they get ripe. One bite and they stop and leave. The next day they try again. Forget the blueberries; they just pull them off of the bush. Mommy doesn’t get any fruit, but they don’t either. Hehehehehe
    Catch you later, Kirby

  • Good morning to all my Glue Squad friends,
Francesca and Sharkey, I read all your previous posts. Rinze looked like he enjoyed his shower. GK knows where to go to stay cool T'ang looked cute under the apple tree. I think Sharkey should get in the blueberry container and stomp on them like they do with grapes. She would look good with blue legs and belly. Hehehehehehehe
Karen said to thank everyone that wished her a speedy recovery. She is doing better.
Zoe, how did the rail painting go? Yucky and Dawson have COPD too. They have scarred lungs from being in the fire so Karen has to be real careful with them when they go out in the heat and humidity. Kirby, it is either pouring there or you have high heat. You can't win buddy. But, it is like that on the whole east coast right now. Dixie Boy, are you anywhere near Greenville? I have two chow relatives that live there Missy Chow, tell me you have been a good girl lately. Even if it isn't true, tell me that anyway. Hehehehehehehe. Rebel, my little buddy, do you still have your duck families? Dudley, did you get all the weeds picked? Martha, Lucy and Riley, how is Operation Clean Sweep going? Kirby, I hope you have flood insurance with all that rain you have been getting. Kitty, really? Chippy on the Barbie? Brutus and Max, how did your Day of Beauty hairdo's turn out? Abby, how are you and Ping get along? James Dean, you do a lot of reading. What got you interested in that? Baby Favor, you be sure to stay inside like Zoe when it is so hot. Gee Ruby, Weston isn't even out of the house yet and already they are redoing the house. What's up with that girlfriend? Hehehehehehehe.
Black Mamma, Elk? That is awesome. Wow. It must be so neat to live with James and Lucinda. I can't wait till they get a dog. You and the rest of the freaks should start thinking of a name for the new dog so that when they do get one, you can be a part of it right from the beginning. And when they get one, don't think that if the dog starts posting on the DW that you have to stop. Nope. You are a Glue Squad member no matter what. You are our connection to Cora Belle as she wanted us to welcome you in her place and that we did. You and new dog can post together if you want. That would be cool.
Well, I am caught up. I am now headed down to the kennel to supervise. It is a tough job but somebody has to lay on the nice cool tile and watch the humans work.
Love to all my animal friends as well as Sonya, Gail, Delia and all the rest of you humanoids
    Maddox

  • Good morning ladies,
Hmmm, fruit, not my "thing". Blueberries hit the floor every now and again in our kitchen. I give them a sniff & leave them alone. Tang looks lovely laying in the shade of the apple tree.
It's hot here again today. Mimi was out watering at 5 this morning getting her flowers & tomatoes ready to face the day.
It's quiet here again, Mimi, Roberta and the grandkids are going to see Despicable Me 2 tomorrow. I'll be napping (as usual).
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Wow, that's some great looking fruit!
The apples are the best! I love apples. Carrots come in 2nd. Me and the cousins just go down the row and pull those up and eat in the garden. Nothing like fresh food! Ruby, Cauliflower??!!!! I don't think so!
The blueberries are late getting ripe this year so there's a delay on blueberry muffins, like Mis stays home long enough to cook!
I'm not real happy about being left everyday. My separation anxiety is kicking into overdrive. I've not done anything bad yet but I'll likely just stop minding Mis when I need to. The cousins stay with me so I have company. Maybe today we'll chew some shoes! The cousins prefer feather pillow fights though. Hummmmm!
Please, everyone take care in the heat. That goes for the humans too. Everyone needs to adopt the slow, Southern lifestyle. Just layback and enjoy!
    Dixie Boy

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, How fascinating that you sweet girls went back outside in that heat, but I love that you shared these photos of those beautiful, delicious fruits in the gardens! MY Mom just finished enjoying Martha's blog this morning all about the beautiful flowers and delicious fruits growing at her Bedford farm in this heat and being watered by her farm crew! You 2 girls look so cute checking on so many fruits and how fun to see the Key limes and Mandarin oranges, also! How fun to see Tang and I'll bet she liked being under the apple tree to stay cool out there! Sure hope you stay cooler today and hug GK for me again! Black Mama, sure is fun to hear about all of those critters at your farm! How fun it will be to get a new, young puppy for you to enjoy, also! Gail, hope you stay cool! Zoe, how nice that your Mom is taking care of that kitty! Sure hope you stay cool! Ruby, hope it gets cooler there! I love cauliflower, broccoli, green beans but not fruit, also! Hope all of you buddies stay cool! Will check back later! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Morning Girls, Tang & Glue Squad Buddies, I tried a couple of blueberries one time and they were good. Mom has some everyday with cereal, she likes the big & juicy clamshell type, so good. It has been so hot & humid this week as everyone is experiencing the same weather pattern, we have had a our third heat wave thus far. Hopefully, it will break the weekend as we may have some rain in store for us. Rain, wet grass, wet paws...ah..could be a challenge for me. Maddox, I'm trying and have been doing pretty good the last couple of days. Hope Karen is feeling every day. Ruby, never tried cauliflower. Zoe, hope your tummy feels better. Rebel, sweet dreams while everyone is at the movies. Dudley Do Right, sounds like you are doing okay. Kitty, fun to watch but no more Chippies. Your Mom's website describing all her horses was very interesting. One can tell she loved her horses very much. Kirby Bear, stay cool. Abby & James Dean, where are you, hope you're not in time out. Dixie Boy, your southern lifestyle I think I could enjoy it. Well, better run...Cool tile and cool a/c is calling my name.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • Greetings Sharkey,Francesca and beautiful Empress Tang!!!
So nice to see the girls exploring all the wonderful fruits available. We love limes, strawberries and blueberries. Empress Tang looks so lovely under the apple trees, I bet you get a good brushing out each day like me.
Maddox, you are too funny, the comment about chippy on the barbie had Mom in stitches laughing. With all her car problems that was a miracle in itself.
Missy Chow, hope you are keeping cool up in Red Sox nation. WELCOME PUCK to the Glue squad, our newest frenchie member from NYC!
Dudley and Ruby, cauliflower really??? Abby likes meat- steak, tacos, more tacos, hotdogs, you get the picture. Her gran ma and gran papa are on vacation so she is off work this week, too hot for car traveling anyway. Rebel, Kitty, Maddox, hope you are enjoying your deck naps. Kirby, how are you keeping cool this summer? Abby's friend Ping went home from boarding. Little Ping was disabled in her back legs but she could run! Zoe, so nice your Mom is feeding the feral cat Scary each day. Black Mama, we loved hearing about the critters and baby beaver you saw. Maddox, I spent a lot of my time reading with Mom before she goes to work the late shift. She exercises every morning then its computer time and reading time with me. Today we are reading A Moveable feast by Hemmingway. Dixie boy, you are right- now all the glue squad can adopt the relaxed Southern lifestyle in this heat wave and chill out.
Hugs and purrrs to Empress tang, Kitty, Scary, Fuzzy butt, Black Mama and all my friends-
James Byron Dean the persian boy cat
P.S. hope Karen feels better soon!

  • Black Mamma,
My bad. I came back to read the DW posts for the day and I read mine too I made a typo error in the part that had to do with you. I said you and the rest of the FREAKS should start thinking of a name for the new dog. What I meant to say was you and the rest of the FERALS should......... Geez, my big fat paws did it again. I am sorry. I did not intend to call you or any of the other FERALS freaks. My paws work faster than my brain sometimes
    Love,
    Maddox

  • Greetings Francesca, Sharkey, Empress Tang and all the Glue Squad!
Brutus here with this late post. I'm looking pretty good, if I say so myself! Mom says I look like a Beagle with long legs! Apparently Beagles and I have the same coat color. All I know is my "coat" is a cooler now! Maxie is still whinning because he got a bath too. Plus Mom and Dad brushed about 5 pounds of fur from him after the bath. They brushed him outside but there's gobs of the stuff floating on the floors in the house. Yuck-o!
It is HOT, HOT, HOT here. The weatherman is promising "cooler" temps this weekend....88-89. Don't know about you all, but that is not cool! Can't wait for winter and snow!
Maxie and I go outside, we do our doggy stuff, and back in again. It's gotten so hot that we bark at the peeps on the bike trail while we are sitting in the air conditioning. Doesn't help our street-cred! But it's hot outside!
Max loves to eat vegys...carrots, green beans, no cauliflower (he is gassy enough!)pretty much anything that is dropped on the floor, but no blueberries or straweberries. I like meat. And my kibble and treats. That's about it.
We have an apple tree, but we watch the squirrels nab the apples, so no apples for the humans. Plus we have black raspberries. Mom has been keeping an eye on them. She's hoping to pick them before the wildlife gets them. Some wildlife already has eaten the petunias and the tuberous begonias that WERE planted around the patio. The zinnas are the only flowers left.
And Empress Tang, in the first picture, looks like she is thinking some very R-rated thoughts!
    Gotta go....Pugs and kisses!
    Brutus

  • ..yo, Maddox, you had it right..we ferals are a freaky bunch..did not hurt our feelers one bit!!...actually, we laughed about it!!over and out, love Black Mama

  • Francesca and Sharkey those Blueberries look delicious, matter of fact all the fruit look yummy. I like eating fruit, mommie delia thinks I'm weird but then I'll just about eat anything she eats...in the morning when she eats her concoction of fruit, oats, yogard, sliced almonds, soy milk and honey...I'm right there watching her eat, then when she scrapes the bowl I know she's finished and hope there is something left for me to lick up...daddie Al says, delia leave the paint on the bowl! ;-)
Lady Tang, what are you doing outside with that long fur? Mommie took a lot off of me with a shearing comb...I have three layers of fine hair and it's always being brushed.
Oh oh mommie is sleeping and I'm pawing away at the iPad, she said enough now!
Brutus, Maddox, James Byron Dean, Missy Chow, Dudley Do Right, Dixie Boy, Rebel, Kirby, Ruby, Black Mama, Zoe and all the Glue Squad friends take care
    and purring cat hugs...
    Better late then never,
    Meuww from Kitty =^. .^=
