A Dogged Hot Summer!
Posted by Pia
Last week I had the pleasure of introducing you to some pups we got to frolic with on New York's Fire Island! Having just returned from a very restful beach stay- I wanted to introduce you Waggers to even more of the wonderful critters with whom we got to spend our vacation!
Watching these new pals play reminded me of the exhilaration one feels as a kid, upon making a new friend!
This proud papa was smart to keep some very special paws off of the scalding hot pavement...
This peppy pup was taking a break from an intense game of fetch!
Stunning rescued Bella here has one blue eye and one brown one! Pretty cool huh?
Pip here (short for Pipsqueak), was focused on assuring that she was getting an even tan!
Having just arrived on the Ferry, this canine was ready for a fun filled beach vacation with her humans!
This mini vacationer decided to adopt the role of welcoming committee... offering free belly rubs for anyone who needed to relax a bit... even though the belly rubs were for her. They did seem to relax people though...
Local Diego here was faithfully at his post - ready to welcome vacationing cats and other creatures... and offer any tips on where to find the best catnip.
And these little lions were relaxing in the tall grass...
This guy even nodded off into an afternoon siesta of sorts! Dreaming of his lion kin in their native habitats...
Because Fire Island is an island without cars (and a protected habitat) it's common to meet local deer - grazing just feet away! They are such gentle creatures!
We had a big field right next to our house where this sweet girl came to graze each day!
My friend Cheryl had the great idea to paint shells with messages reminding visiting humans to be respectful on the locals... of all species!
Even the littlest ones who make Fire Island their home year round! It was amazing to watch how this industrious spider went about weaving her web...
We hung our messages in all sorts of places!
...After all, we tourists are just visitors! For the local wildlife, this is their year-round home!
Needless to say, we spent lots of time on the beautiful beaches!
Whenever we found a neat looking shell, we made sure no one was living in it before taking it as a souvenir. And for crabs who washed up on the sand, we were sure to help them get unstuck and back into the ocean...
It's important to always remember that we all share this planet - and we have the power to make life better by looking out for one another- kinda like everyone on The Glue Squad and at The Daily Wag!!
Stella the seagull is sure to only take what she and her family need to survive and to tread lightly on the seashore... It's in her nature to do so...
We even got to see colorful Jellyfish!
... Truly amazing!
And there was even evidence of mermaids in our midst...
This one must have been rinsing sand off of her gills in the outdoor shower...
More mermaid evidence? I guess mermaids need sun protection too!
Sending a big thanks to the myriad species on Fire Island- canines, deer, felines, humans, spiders, etc.
Thanks for letting us visit!
While the summer's extreme heat seems to have let up just a bit- it's important to keep in mind how even mild heat, can pose great danger to our fur kids. Please be sure to share this critical info. with your friends and neighbors too- Many humans are surprised to learn just how quickly the summer heat can wreak havoc on our furry loved ones. Remember-they depend upon us to keep them cool, hydrated and out of harm's way.
