What's That In The Middle Of The Road?

Posted by F&S

We Frenchies were driving around the farm yesterday and we were cruising past one of the hayfields when something strange was spotted in the roadway up ahead.  Being curious Frenchies, we stopped to investigate.

This is very, very strange!

It kind of looks like a chicken egg, but what would a chicken egg be doing way out here in the hayfield?

It doesn't smell like any kind of chicken I've ever smelled before.

You're right Sharkey, but do you remember when we had turkeys living with the chickens? This kind of smells like a turkey egg.

Come to think of it, don't you also remember seeing a flock of wild turkeys recently in this hayfield?

Turkeys like to forage for nuts, seeds, berries, and insects and there are plenty of bugs around here for them to enjoy.

When turkey mating is finished, females search for nest sites. Their nests are shallow dirt depressions engulfed with woody vegetation.

Predators of eggs and nestlings include raccoons, opossums, skunks, foxes, raptors, groundhogs, other rodents, spotted skunks, and snakes. With so many enemies, it's amazing any turkeys survive!

You're right, Franny. This egg has a hole poked in it and was sucked clean. What a cruel and difficult time animals have out in the wild.

  • Good morning ladies,
Very interesting indeed! I found a duck egg in a planter last year. It was stinky.......
Mimi has been gone all week and so my computer time was greatly curtailed.
Nothing happened! Papa got me through the storms and boy, was I glad to see Mimi!
    Quiet weekend for us.
I'll check back later to see what everybody has been up to.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, What an interesting item you sweet girls found on that road and your description of the wild turkeys was fascinating! I haven't see any wild turkeys in my area! How awful that some creature sucked out that big egg and hope the rest lived to be in your area! You two looked so fascinated finding that wild turkey egg! Thanks for sharing this blog today and hope to see GK next week! Rebel, so nice to hear from you this morning! You are the only one so far! Glad Mimi is back and you sound very happy! We had another rainy day yesterday and are supposed to get very hot sunshiny days for about a week! Hope you all have a great weekend and will check back later! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
Happy TGIF!!! F & S, it is very difficult in the wild. Those poor little turkey eggs. Mama Martha just has chickies now, no turkeys anymore???? You two keep safe from whoever got the egg, you here me? Rebel, I am so glad you are back from computer vacation. I really missed you and I bet Mimi did too. We have a new member of the Glue Squad while you were away, Dixie Boy. He is a cool guy and lives with Mis. I was going to ask you Dixie Boy and others if any of you were afraid of baths when you got to your forever homes. I did come through for Mom and Dad on their anniversary and got the bath. It was funny--Mom was in the pool outside scooping water on me and Dad held me and I couldn't even look at the water--just held him for dear life. But then a strange thing happened as my paws were over his shoulder, the warm water felt good. Don't tell the folks that or they will think this bath thing is a regular happening. I know Maddox, I am a lab, but I have more fraidy cat than lab in me. LOL!! Well, I am a silker now and ready for the weekend. Mom and I will be having girl time, while the men are working on Weston's house. At least it will only be 89 or so. Not 99!!! Everyone needs to send me some of the rain you have been getting. Pretty soon some of you will have to build an ark. Have a GEM of a weekend all. Oh, Auntie Ann, will you post your e-mail for all the newbies to send you their e-mail address? Dixie Boy and Brutus and Max, this way we get to send each other photos--and don't forget your birthdays too. That is a biggie for Miss Party Planner Ruby. Hugs to all.

  • Aw, poor little unborn turkette! What a darn shame.

On a happier note, the first photo with F&S behind the wheel put a HUGE smile on my face. I can use my vivid imagination and just about picture F&S 'driving' around the farm! :)

Happy weekend to the critters and fellow glue squad devotees!

  • Hello Francesca,Sharkey, Ruby,Maddox, Rebel buddy, Missy Chow, Zoe and all my glue squad friends,
Nice to see Franny driving around the farm. We have turkeys, turkey au pairs and turkettes around here. they have a rough time hiding from our foxes.
Sorry we missed Frances the cutie squirrel and Minnow yesterday. Black Mama, hope you have an especially nice weekend. I thought of you when Mom spent 15 minutes brushing and combing my persian hair and TEETH! Yes, I am brushing my teeth this summer. They look better already.
Abby is laughing now but later tonight its bathtime! Mom says she smells doggy, so its spa time..hehehehe.
Zoe, do you go swimming in the pool? Anybody ready for July 4th? Coming up soon. Maddox, hope you and Kirby are keeping cool on your decks. Sweet Dudley, hugs for you. Purrrs to Kitty! High paws to Dixie Boy. Have a great weekend all!

  • Hello everyone,
Boy, I am late with my comments today. Busy, busy, busy. I am helping Dave. He is working on the new Kenntl and he is putting a tile floor in this week. It is pretty nice. Karen came up with a nice design to run down the sides of the floor and Dave made all the cuts to get it done. We aren't done with it yet but we grouted a big section. We are taking a break for a day or two so I can go back to deck time if it isn't raining again when I wake up.
Everyone of my Glue Squad buddies, have a great weekend and try to stay out of trouble.
Will Wallsce, Karen said everything will be alright. Think walks in underwear whatever that means. Sometimes that lady scares me. Hehehehehehehehe
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good Morning F & S

Something was wrong with the website when mom tried to post Friday morning and then she had to leave for work so now it's Saturday morning. She is suppose to go play golf but it looks nasty out - and SO wet. We have had bad storms every day this week. The sky gets black around 4:00 and look out - buckets of water come down.

F & S what kind of animal can create such a little hole in the egg and suck it out without breaking the shell? I'm pretty impressed. You should take that home and color it for Easter :)

Mom heard from Lynn and Ruby last night. Ruby's dad didn't get the news he wanted from his doctor so please keep all of them in your prayers.

I'm hoping mom changes her mind about golf and stays home with me - I'd be much more fun than stupid golf don't you think ;)

    Have a great weekend everyone!!

    Zoe

Oh almost forgot - anyone who wants to be on the Glue Squad email list send my mom your information -

  • Oh my, that poor little Turkey chick never had a chance...but that is nature...we have a bumper crop of Turkeys coming through our yard, and as well as deer...seems odd because of the imbalance of our weather.
    So F & S you can actually SMELL it's a Turkey egg? amazing ;-)
Ruby sweets, be assured I have daddie Will in my prayers.

Everyone here in the Glue Squad have a Wonderful Monday, the sun is out, nice and cool here...the first half of the year has gone by so fast :-(
    Hugs,
    delia & Kitty =^. .^=
