Seems that since I've met Frances, I'm aware of squirrels everywhere! This one was painted on a van in NYC!

In fact, I've even begun collecting squirrel memorabilia since meeting Frances!

This is an especially busy time of year with little ones who need critical help to heal and survive.

They will be going to an outside enclosure with some other friends and will stay there for about 2 weeks getting used to the climate, sounds, etc. They also must demonstrate enough natural fear/caution when Maggie opens the cage to remain safe around humans.

Then Maggie will open the release windows so they can come and go until they establish their own territory.
She will put food out and watch as they become increasingly independent!

Here is our Frances just this morning! I bet her mama would be super proud of her girl- I know I am!

I feel so fortunate to have played even a small role in mothering her- along with her late squirrel mama, her human mama Maggie, and Mother Nature.

Thankfully Frances has gotten the kind of second chance and freedom that i'd wish for all of our fellow creatures.

Maggie said her little charges often come back to visit and catch up - or get an extra treat to nosh on.

Frances has had quite the dedicated team of mommies (and daddies)- a team comprised of players from various species- all under the wise supervision of our head coach... Mother Nature.
Go Team!

Please be sure to familiarize yourselves with licensed wildlife rehabbers in your area. While it is critical to seek immediate guidance from a trained rehabber when one discovers any wildlife in need- it is also helpful to read up on what is needed to help baby squirrels like Frances!

  • Hello Dr. Pia and Frances,
So fun to get the updates on how you are getting ready for your big day. You look happy and healthy. I must ask everyone for prayers to come to everyone associated with all the forest fires here in Colorado. We all cried for the animals, both domestic and wild. Fires are a bad, bad thing. I must go as I am very sad. I hope you all have a GEM of a day.

Thank you Dr. Pia for saving Frances with the help of so many.

    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Good morning Dr. Pia,
That outside closure is really cool!
    Good luck little Frances.......
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hi Dr. Pia and Minnow, Thanks again for another fabulous blog about how well Frances and other squirrels are doing after getting such great help from you, Maggie, and other friends who care so much for all animals just like my Mom does and I do, also! Frances looks so much better and how nice she will be in that great cage outside for a while and then be able to survive with her friends out in the woods! All of these photos are so much fun to see over and over again and my prayers certainly go to Frances, her friends and all of you! Sure hope you and Minnow have another great weekend and can't wait to see you again next Thursday! Sure hope to hear from you Glue Squaders very soon! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello Dr.Pia, Frances, Maggie, Ruby,Rebel, Maddox, Sweet Dudley and all my glue squad friends,
I am so happy to see little Frances growing up and making the gradual reintroduction to the wild. Thanks to Dr.Pia and Maggie for the updates.
Sorry you are sad Ruby. I hope some rain helps put out those fires in Colorado. Our hearts reach out to you.
Maddox, my mom is talking about brushing my persian boy teeth! Are you kidding me? How come Abby gets greenies and I have to brush???? Do any other glue squaders brush their teeth? Bet Black Mama and Zoe don't have to do that. Oh well, another rainy day here. Hope everyone has a great, safe and happy day-
purrrs to Kitty, Black Mama, and Empress Tang.

  • ..good going Francis!..you have a long interesting life ahead of you, good luck!...no no no ..no tooth brushing or grooming for us ferals..au natural is how we roll!!..and yes, we wish the wild fires would stop..we are sad for the people and all the critters...nature can be so cruel...but today, I saw baby raccoons in the yard..a couple baby fawns with their moms and and down the driveway a mom elk with her calf..Lucinda says no more walks until all the babies get older..doesn't want to disturb them..so okay...over and out, Black Mama

  • Hi Dr Pia, Minnow & Glue Squad-Happy to hear that Frances is doing so well, getting bigger & stronger and especially learning how to be able to take care of herself once she is able to go back into the wild. Ruby, wish I could send some rain your way and for the fires; we have had so much rain that things cannot dry out before the next storml raining again tonight :( . James Dean, Mom & Dad buy me the greenies for my teeth, they are so good and "I will do most anything" for one. Hi to everyone!!

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • Even though we would, given the chance, chase squirrels, we are happy to see Frances and Luckey progressing so well.
Mom and Dad tried to brush our teeth a couple of times. Didn't work out for any of us. Back to the greenies and the vet!
We had thunder storms this morning, but finally the sun came out and the day ended beautifully.
Our hearts and prayers go out to everyone in the path of the fires in Colorado.
    Pugs and kisses.
    Brutus and Max

  • Hello Dr. Pia, Minnow and all her furfriends,
How precious! even the Squirrels should have a second chance! I know it's a favorite thing for F&S and some glue-squad furfriends to go after...but think of it, it could be you chased by something bigger then you...I'm just saying ;-) Kitty use to hunt squirrels but I have curbed it now I'm working on the Chippies.
Love the photos, they tell so much...Bless that rehab!
I found a rehab here in town that saves Raptor Birds, they have some awesome birds, including Eagles.
    Thanks for sharing Dr.Pia...
Brutus, Max, Missy Chow, Black Mama, James Dean, Dudley Do Right, Rebel, Ruby(I know how you feel about the fires sweet Ruby, all we can do is pray)
    Hugs to All,

    delia & Kitty =^. .^=
