Predator Tang

Posted by F&S

The other day, we Frenchies told you about our prey drive.  After finding Empress Tang skulking around outside, we got to wondering and did a little research regarding cats' predatory nature.

Sharkey, do you see who's lurking in the grass by the apple espalier?

The bird feeders are very popular with many of our local birds. Martha likes to fill the feeders with an assortment of seeds to attract as many different birds as possible.

Some varieties of birds are ground feeders, preferring to peck at the seeds that fall there from the feeders. Those are the ones who are in danger of Empress Tang.

We blogged about our inbred prey drive the other day. Cats, too, are born with a hunting and chasing instinct. In fact, kittens are programmed from birth to chase.

I remember when Tang was just a kitten and how much she liked to play with her toys. Through play, she developed coordination and timing, which is necessary to successfully capture a target.

She learned how to adjust her speed and how to gauge distance by pouncing. With all that play, Tang learned how to fine-tune her hunting skills.

Then, the mother brings home partially dead prey and finishes off the kill in front of the kittens. The kittens are then allowed to practice their skills and learn to kill the wounded, slow-moving prey themselves.

Gradually more prey is brought home until the kittens become skilled at catching and killing them. And finally the kittens accompany the mother and learn to hunt and kill completely on their own.

Many cats perform this same lesson on their human owners by bringing home dead prey and dropping it at the owners' feet.

Now where is she going?

I guess all this talk about prey and killing got to Tang. She's probably going inside for some of that Fancy Feast, or whatever it is that cats eat!

  • Hello Sharkey, Francesca and my buddy Empress Tang!!!
So nice to see a cat related blog! As you know Daddy cats also teach their kittens to hunt. I certainly did for my two boy cats. They learned to hunt birds and now livr in fine homes eating friskies and healthy dry food.
I still long for the hunt but its not fair to the little song birds.
    HAPPY BIRTHDAY DUDLEY!!!!
Hope evrybody has a wonderful weekend! Puuurrrs to Missy Chow, Maddox, Rebel, Zoe, Kitty, Ruby and all my friends-
Jimmy Byron Dean the persian cat boy

  • ..I hate to admit it but that is in my DNA and being a feral I am guilty of doing all the afore mentioned things..please forgive me all my glue squad buddies...love, Black Mama p.s., though, now, we ferals here at the farm/ranch get two meals a day and tend to lounge around a lot rather than hunt.. which is good for all the outdoor critters that reside here at the farm/ranch

  • Greetings Francesca, Sharkey, GK and Glue Squaders and Special Guest Star Empress Tang!
The only "prey" we hunt down are the treats Mom and Dad hand out when we come in the house. Guess that means we are spoiled. Oh well.
Of course, if they would ever let us off our cables we would show those squirrels who is boss!
Here is hoping everyone has a great weekend. Here in Southwest Ohio the weather is suppose to be great. Good for laying out in the yard watching the peeps on the bike trail.
    Pugs and kisses to everyone!

  • Good morning,
Although I don't know what is good about it. It is pouring here. Pouring. Wet feet. Ewwww
Wet coat that has to be dried. Ewwww. Just as Empress Tang has a prey drive, we chows should have a Commode Drive. We should be taught from little on up how to approach a toilet slowly and cautiously. We should be taught how to position ourselves on the porcelain throne and we should be taught to flush when done with our business. Oh yeah, and most important although I don't know why, we should be taught to put the lid down when done. Were we taught this from little on up? No, and that is why it is an ewwww day today. Pouring rain. I think I am going to tell myself I don't have to go to the bathroom yet and fall asleep real quick and maybe when I wake up the rain will be gone.
    Happy Friday everyone. Good weekend
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good Morning F & S oh and Furball ET

Take no offense ET but you are a furball, sorry.
I'm sure ET has never caught a critter she would mess her fur up - she seems like a high maintenance pretty girl. Again, no offense but it is what it is.

Rain here all day today. I hope it rains tomorrow morning so mom doesn't go play golf. The sun can come out once she missed her tee time ;) I wish we could have stayed in bed today but she has a big meeting at 10.

Have a great weekend everyone I think I'll go back and snuggle with Sophie.

    Zoe

  • I'm back.
Still pouring. Can't wait any longer. Have to get the feet wet. What a way to start the day. Oh well. I will just put my big boy pants on and deal with it. Be right back.............ok, I 'm back. I hope the rain stops till I have to go out again.
You know, we have a dilemma when someone has a birthday over the weekend. You try to send birthday wishes on the exact day but sometimes that is not possible. So, Dudley, my friend, you will just have to come back on the blog on Sunday and read all your birthday wishes that were posted today, Friday.
Happy Happy Birthday Dudley. I hope you have a Great Day on Sunday. Maybe you will be lucky and have a big party all weekend long. Yeah. I was thinking and I wondered who is now the oldest Glue Squad member. Sweet beautiful Cora-Belle held that title. She was amazing. I think she would have turned 18 on her next birthday. Dudley, you are what? 9 years old now? So is anyone older than that who is a member of the Glue Squad?
Well you maniacs, I am going to check out the television as soon as I can find the remote. Today is a lazy day unless you are a duck. Hehehehehehehe
    Love,
    Maddox

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
FIRST, before I comment....HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR DUDLEY DO RIGHT, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU......and many more!!! Could you hear me Dudley, could ya, could ya??? I have been practicing all week, so have a good one buddy and I hope you get some toys and treats. Mom will make you some Warrior Prince Biscuits when her neck is a little better. That rolling pin motion is heck on the pain I guess. I know Mama Jan and the Uncles always spoil you, but extra spoiling over the weekend. Have fun!

Now to our prey instincts....I didn't realize it but what you girls say is true on prey. We all have it in one form or another. I may not get to those raccoons, but I sure do lay quiet and watch at night as they climb down their tree. I know exactly where they live. And speaking of birds there is a new clan in my kingdom...the Downy Woodpecker Clan. They are really cute.

My brother closed on his house yesterday and I hear a lot of work ahead. I saw photos, still not safe enough for me, but soon the fences will be fixed and I can inspect the place. Oh, and Maddox, I think Abby could be the senior Glue Squad member at 11, with her birthday in April. Not for sure though. There are a lot of 11 year old members of the Glue Squad. Have a GEM of a day and a GEM of a weekend to all my buddies.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I too have the drive of the hunter. I stalk and track down my milk bone each day. When I have my prey in close range, I pounce upon it and grab it in my teeth. I toss it into the air and hunt it down again. Such is the life of an indoor hunter. Why not go outdoors you ask? Haven’t you seen; it’s raining ‘cats and dogs’ out there. I know because I just stepped in a ‘poodle.’ Yeah, you’re right, that’s an old one. But it is raining out side. I started yesterday and has rained all night and it still is raining today. It’s not hard but going “out” is really a bother. My Daddy will use a big umbrella and I walk close to him to stay dry. That works but my feet get wet. Now that’s not a good thing. I’m like Maddox. I don’t like soggy feet. Have a good, and safe, weekend all. Try to stay dry in this rain.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Good morning ladies,
Empress Tang would be on my "chase away" list 'cause of my new fledging robin. I discovered her by accident yesterday while snooping around the yard. She was hiding under one of the hosta that has really big leaves. It makes such a nice little house for her. She flew to a low branch of the serviceberry, but Mimi said she was back to her hiding spot within a couple of minutes. I bet her Mom is bringing her berries!
The ducklings are getting bigger. Their Mom & Dad keep a close eye on them.
Now, a big Happy Birthday to our pal Dudley! Sun shiny wishes coming your way! Maybe a Warrior Prince biscuit or two?
    Have a great weekend everybody.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, Hi sweet girls! How fun that you shared Empress Tang today! Haven't seen her for quite a while and she looks beautiful and is very intelligent like you are! Love seeing all of those birds, also! My Mom used to feed birds and my great friend Bogie the kitty would come over many days and catch birds! Some times he would leave rats by the front door and we had to bury them! Kitties sure are fascinating! Hope you girls have a great weekend at Skylands with Martha and hope GK goes, also! Sure was fun to hear from so many of you great buddies again this morning and I love all of your fun comments! Maddox and Ruby, thanks for your thoughtful birthday wishes for me and I will have great fun on Sunday with Mom taking me for a nice walk and giving me many great treats and hopefully new toys! Our weather should be a bit cooler and sunny which will be nice! Will check back later! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hi Jimmy Dean, I really goofed today because I meant to thank sweet you for wishing me Happy Birthday, also! You are one of my favorite kitties and I love you! Have a great weekend! Love, Dudley Do Right XO

  • Well "Chitty Chitty Tang Tang" is all I can say! :)

Actually I dig the word 'skulking' and will try to infuse it in my day somehow!

Yuck, killing prey! Sheesh, I don't blame Tang-a-roo, for heading for a dish of Fancy Pants Feast!

It's raining here in NH! I'm going to need a goat or two to take care of the lawn!

    Happy Weekend to all..
    gail

  • Happy Birthday sweet Dudley!!! I hope you have a fantastic weekend. Sounds like a perfect adventure-treats and walks with Mom!

  • Afternoon Girls, Empress Tang & Glue Squad Friends, Yes, we all have some type of prey drive and just watching & waiting is what I do best. No back door presents. Well, it's raining today and I have to agree with Maddox & Kirby, no soggy paws for me either. The weather is not on our side today or maybe even tomorrow. Happy, Happy Birthday Dudley Do Right, hope your Mom has many surprises planned for your big weekend celebration. Ruby, congratulations to your big brother on his house closing, bet he is very excited. Hi to all my buddies, wishing all of you a great weekend, stay dry!!

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • ..it is Sunday..so that means it is Dudleys birthday..So Happy Birthday my little buddy...me and my tribe will act naughty for you all day!...love, Black Mama

  • F & S... Kitty does exactly the same thing...the other day she went across the street caught a Chippy brought it home and ate it...I won't allow her to kill ours so she said, OK I'll go across the street...oh well! :-(

Happy Birthday to Dudley, sorry I'm late!
    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Oh my, F&S!
Empress Tang wanted to have a moment of private..."paws" to reflect on the fresh and delicious variety of appetizer presented there. Her majesty will definitely return when the crowd leaves.
    It's possible that she would enjoy this live cam of larger bird activity...(my neighbor's large farm cat, Don...loves to watch it in the morning with me!}
