Planting Hens & Chicks

Posted by Sharkey

Francesca was in an odd mood yesterday and she wandered off to be by herself.  I didn't want that kind of isolation, so I teamed up with Chhewang and Ryan and assisted with planting urns.  These guys are so busy and I think it's important to cheer them on!

Chhewang, I have no idea where Francesca has wandered off to, but I'm present and prepared to help you and Ryan plant the urns on the summer house terrace.

I see that you have a good-quality potting mix. This is a professional brand called Metro-Mix.

Ryan, these urns on the porch have drain holes, but they're positioned a bit high and water collects in the bottom, unable to drain out. That's an odd design!

I see that you remedy the situation by putting coarse gravel in the bottom of the urn. Clever thinking!

I'm sure you know that good drainage is critical to plant health. Plant roots need adequate air and healthy roots means healthier plants!

OK, next comes the potting mix.

Ryan, it's important to use a good potting mix and this one has excellent moisture retention, drainage, and is light, allowing roots to grow easily.

Ah! Hens & Chicks - a very good choice for these shallow urns. They are low growing, rosette-formed succulents that make an excellent groundcover.

Hens & Chicks are very hardy and like to grow in full sun to light shade. The larger plants are the hens and the chicks are the small offspring.

Very nicely done! I especially like the addition of the other red-tinged succulents.

  • Greetings All!
Sorry we haven't posted at all this week. It didn't start out very good. Our Dad started having chest pains Monday morning so Mom quickly took him to the hospital. He had to stay overnight, have a procedure where a doctor looks at the inside of his heart (that's called an angiogram) and he finally came home late Tuesday evening. Boy were we ever glad to see him! The doctor says he is ok for now but he HAS to stop smoking! We are encouraging him every day. Dad is off work until Monday so we have to watch over him while Mom is at work.
Welcome to the Glue Squad Dixie!!!! It's great to finally find your forever home, isn't it?
Sharkey, we helped Dad plant some begonias Wednesday. Well, he started then Mom took over. Then we helped to spread mulch. The patio is looking very good. When our human cousin, Kayla, comes back from vacation next week we will supervise planting more begionas.
    Pugs and kisses to everyone!
    Brutus and Max

  • Hello everyone,
Sharkey, next time you can't find Francesca, take GK along. He is big and strong. He could help you. I must apologize to all my Glue Squad friends. I like to post personal comments for every one of my special peeps and I didn't get that done this week. I go back and read every comment for the entire week and then I say something to each of you. It is usually on a Friday. But today I must go to help get supplies so I can't stay on long. I will be busy all day again. Today another big cement truck is coming so things have to get done before it arrives. Have a great weekend. Stay cool. And I will get back to each and every one if you on Monday.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good Morning Sharkey

We have some chicks and hens in our yard however we call my grandmom the "Queen" of chicks and hens because she has them everywhere. Mom told her she should enter them in the floral contest at the Philadelphia Flower Show.

So what's up with Franny? I hope she is feeling okay.

Finally Friday - boy what a long week. Mom said she needs this weekend bad!!! I guess that means she had a tough week at work. I'm so happy the rain is gone I thought it would never end. Sunshine today so that means lots of deck time with Dad.

    Have a great weekend everyone!!

  • Hello Ladies, Kirby here.
My Mommy and Daddy have been working in the front yard getting the flower beds ready for planting. It seems it is taking them a long time this year. Guess getting older slows the body down a little. Or maybe it’s the rain which has been keeping the soil too wet to work in. It could be the heat and high humidity too. I try to stay inside with the cool AC working. Well it’s the weekend already. Boy how time seems to be flying by. It’s the summer now and things will hear up around here quickly. Have a good, and safe, weekend all.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • First off, Brutus and Max I hope your dad is doing better and that all is OK!

Sharkey you're such a good Frenchie dog, always helping out or supervising ;-)
Hope little Franny is OK, maybe she doesn't want to get her clean bathed paws dirty ..

I miss Kitty, but her auntie says she's doing fine and coming home for meals. Especially for the leftover ham and chicken breast from the VFW dinner, she loves people food but only gets it for a treat.
Well I'm still limping around,(post couple of days ago) hope I didn't break the knee cap, all the bruises are getting darker...especially my chin... Ugh!
Grandog Logan is feeling better from her urinary tract infection, so that makes for a happy household here.
Tomorrow we take the 1967 Mustang Boss 300 to the car show, last time it got 1st place in paint and detail...
Everyone have a great and safe weekend!
    Hugs,
    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Good Morning Everyone,
Sharkey, this is what we used to do up until a year ago, only on a larger scale with greenhouses. Mis, her sister Cay and Ray ran the family's nursery business. Now Mis's brother grows veggies in the houses and they run The Store that he once had. All that flip-flopping sure gets confusing for us dogs. That's okay, we rather eat those carrots he grows than that Rosemary that they grew. Yuk Yuk.
Yes, my cousins Zeke, Izzy and I are farm dogs. Okay, maybe not true farm dogs but we do have about 12 acres to run free on. We live beside each other. That way when Mis or Ray and Cay leave for the day, we are taken care of. We liked it better when they were home more and we get to acting out when we get left alone now. I sometimes refuse to listen to Mis, and go do my thing. But later we get it straightened out. I miss her when she's gone and she knows that. All this change can get a bit upsetting, but as long as she's here to feed me at night, all is good. Of course, if I get invited to eat with the cousins that's pretty good too. Okay, as long as there's food, from anywhere it's all GOOD.
    See Ya Later, Dixie Boy

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
Can't believe it is Friday already.Do these Hens and Chicks lay eggs? They sure are beautiful, even if they don't lay eggs. Mom said her Grandma had tons of then when she was growing up. This year our garden is not doing so good--we had to replant a lot, seeds never came up--won't send to that place anymore. And now the second planting of some. Hopefully we won't get an early frost. I heard talk of the bath word. Big discussion---Mom wants to do it in my spa pool and Dad and brother say heavens no. If I keep the discussion going long enough, guess what, no bath. I hope Abby gets the duck situation worked out and that Missy isn't escaping. Brutus and Max and am soooo glad your Dad is home, and I know you will do your part to help him get strong again. Zoe, I see pool time and lots of "cc" time with Mom this weekend in your future. Rebel, every day I go on my walk there are less and less baby geese, until finally, Mom is staying in the water with them, far from shore, so the coyotes don't get them. Dudley, I bet you can see our smoke from all the fires. Mama Delia will be home soon for you Kitty, don't worry. James Dean, I get my teeth brushed too with the poultry flavor, yummo!! Martha, Riley and Lucy's family should be moving about now. Baby Favor, how is the Wicked show coming along? Maddox, we miss your personalized comments but know that helping Karen with the new kennel is of the utmost importance. Now Kirby I am supposed to tell your Dad there is a place called IntheCompanyofDogs.com that sells those special collars Dixie Boy was telling you about. It is called Stop Bite Collar and Mom says looks just like the one the bird had on at the rescue to keep from biting it's feathers off. Now Dixie Boy I have a few questions about the south. I hear they have really good food in the south, according to my Dad. What is your favorite? Now you call your Mom Mis, is that short for Missy, or something else? Mom says southerners are very proper, so maybe it is a fancy name? Sounds neat, whatever. That is sad that people just dump their animals off in the dead end, but good for you that you have a cool home now. We are both working on those trust issues. Did I tell everyone, that I give kisses now? Have a GEM of a weekend all.
    Love & licks,
    Ruby

  • Good morning Sharkey & Chhewang,
Busy, busy, busy! We didn't have so many pots this year, but we had flats of annuals. So, now there are lots of little flowers to get through this dry spot we're having.
No complaints, though! The sun has been shining, the top was down on the car (I love that!)
    Have a great weekend everybody.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, Sweet, beautiful Sharkey, it sure is fun to see you helping Ryan and Chhewang plant those beautiful hens and chicks and succulents in those gorgeous urns on the summer house terrace! You certainly did a great job helping them and they both looked very happy and so did you! I love to help my Mom whenever possible, too! Hope you have a great weekend and say Hi to Francesca and GK for me! Hi Dixie Boy, I kept forgetting to say Hi to welcome you and love your comments! Welcome back Brutus and Max! Sure hope your Dad gets to feel better real soon and glad you are helping him! Maddox, thanks for your nice comments again and hope you have fun working again! Zoe, sure glad your rain is gone! We finally had some yesterday and it's supposed to be sunny today and Saturday with more rain next week! Hi Kirby, my Mom slows down just a little bit, but she works very hard out in our yard all summer long and I help all I can! Hope to hear from the rest of you buddies soon! Have a great weekend! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hens and chicks that don't cluck, chirp or leave special 'droppings'! :)

Very nice arrangement. Succulents are one of my favorite plants.

    It's Friday and it's sunny! :)

    Summer is here...

Happy Weekend to all the G.S. critters and humans! :)

  • Hello Sharkey,Maddox,Kitty,Delia,Ruby,Rebel,Dixie Boy,Missy Chow, Zoe and all my glue squad friends,
Great work Sharkey planting all those hens and chicks in the huge urns. Abby commented her body shape looks like yours, she is always trying to look like her favorite Sharkey. Maybe Franny is planning a summer party with G.K.? Happy First day of Summer to all the glue squad!
Delia, we are so sorry to hear you were injured and limping around with bruises! Hope you feel much better soon. Brutus and Max hope your dad feels better soon and gets lots of rest. Kirby, hope you enjoy the cool A/C and that your tail heals up. Rebel, we admire your compassion for the ducks and baby geese too. Maddox, stay cool and know we are thinking of you and Karen this weekend and building the new kennel. Zoe, my Mom needs a weekend real bad too. We hope you get lots of pool time and treats. Dudley, its nice you help out your mom in the yard.We are getting radishes, strawberries, blueberries and peas now. The pumpkin patch is starting up,squash, tomatoes, herbs and horseradish are growing. Mom says its our victory garden! Ruby, your garden will grow up soon, maybe a bath would feel good. Dixie Boy,we loved hearing about your adventures. Missy Chow, have a great weekend up in Red Sox nation.
Off to read Walden by Thoreau: "Hither the clean wild ducks come" he said about the pond's wildfowl. We love our wild ducks and ducklings at the pond.
    Love you glue squad,
    James Byron Dean

  • Back Again to answer Ruby's Questions about the South.
Ruby, have you ever tried speaking two syllable words. My 6" tougue and canines just get all tangled up. But yes, Mis's nik-name is Missy. Izzy can speak better than I can and she speaks well, for a dog of course.
Mis said that she went to collage with a few of those Proper Southern Debutantes with the Fancy Names. They are just like the rest of us except they may know a cream spoon from a bouillon spoon. At least they know that the proper way to eat fried chicken is always with your fingers.
By the way, I don't get to enjoy human food much. Blue Buffalo for me! Sometimes I get CHEESE. And I always get popcorn when it's offered. In fact that's one that I give a kiss for. But I get to eat any veggie and fruit I want. I dearly love carrots and apples. Mis had two dogs before me that would clear the Sugar Snap Peas right off the plants in the garden and blueberries off the bushes. Me, I can't wait for the pecans in the fall.
As far as being proper southerners, we live a very simple life. Mis doesn't like the hectic lifestyle of those around us. We live in what she calls a progressive area. Once farmland and small towns but now a growing suburban area. Many different cultural and ethnic groups are moving in. Mis says it's great to learn about all these people and the culture they bring is great, but she longs for a slower southern pace. The Proper South is disappearing here. But as for us, we lean towards the redneck side of life anyway. I'm not called Dixie Boy for nothing. See ya!

  • You know I'm a complete goofball. When I saw the title, "Planting Hens & Chicks" I thought you pupsters had devised a way to get into the hen house and were about to make mischief for your egg laying friends.
Hi Brutus & Max. I'm glad that your Dad is doing better. Delia I am so sorry to hear you are feeling bad. Still getting caught up on everything.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. It's going to be toasty out!

  • Thanks Dixie Boy for answering my question. A girl doesn't learn if she doesn't ask. We are twins too, because I eat Blue Buffalo also. Your Mom sounds soooo cool---I just knew Missy was her name. I like the name Izzy too. Very superdooper. Have a GEM of a weekend, and thanks for taking time to answer my questions. I'll be whistlin' Dixie this weekend thinking of my new Glue Squad buddy, Dixie Boy. Have a GEM of a weekend all.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby
