Berry Season Has Begun At The Farm!

Posted by F&S

Now that it's finally getting hot, the berries in our berry patch are finally ripening.  The first to mature are the currants.  We grow white, black, and redcurrants and of the three, redcurrants are the first to ripen.

Oh my, what have we here?

It looks like lots and lots of redcurrant berries have been picked off the bushes early this morning, before it got too hot.

Redcurrants make an excellent and beautiful jelly. In fact, in England, redcurrant jelly is a condiment often served with lamb.

Laura, did you know that the berries form on long stems called racemes and each raceme can have from 3 to 10 berries?

The berries are practically translucent and appear quite jewel-like.

Laura, as you may know, you can spread the stemmed currants on a baking sheet and place it in the freezer. When the currants are frozen, they can be transferred to storage containers for future use.

Of course, Martha is sure to put up several jars of currant jelly right away, and it wouldn't surprise me if she even baked a redcurrant tart or two! Yum!!!

  • Those currants are a beautiful bright red! They look especially nice in that blue bucket.

    I don't think I've ever tasted a currant.

    Happy Wednesday to all..

  • Hello girls,
What a bright vivid color those berries are, yum yum. A red currant pie, never had it but it sounds good. If you have any left over, save me a piece so I can try it. Hehehehehehehe
James Dean, you asked where I was yesterday. I posted a couple hours before you did my man. Hmmmmmm. Ruby, we will all send positive thoughts on the biopsy report and tell Mamma Lynn and Dad Will that I wish them a very very Happy 37th Wedding Anniversary. Are they doing anything special? You know what would be a good thing for them to do today? They should go make out in their car in a park or something and then you can call the cops on them and then they will be arrested and their pictures will be in the newspaper and it will be an anniversary they will never forget and they will have you to thank for it by calling the cops on them. Great idea. Hehehehehehehe.
Everything is wet outside. So do I want to drag the dryer out to dry a spot on the deck or do I want to stay in where the AC is running? Easy choice. In it is.
Kirby, keep that purple people eater down in your area. I have enough adventure going on here. Black Mamma, you tell Lucinda to take it easy. That trail can be done a little at a time. And tell James we are all sending our love and support his way
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good Morning F & S

Red currants are pretty but I don't think I'd want to eat any - give me a cookie and now we're talkin :)

Happy Anniversary to Ruby's mom and dad!! Ruby tell your humans we are praying that your dad gets good news from his biopsy. I'm sending positive Frenchie thoughts your way :)

My time is short today mom has an early meeting. Have a good day!!

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
At first I though you were pulling ole Kirby’s leg when you started talking about the currants. My Daddy often told the story of a young, should I say blond here, who went camping and took along her hair dryer. When asked what she would do about the electricity, she said she would plug it into the nearest “current” bush. Sorry about the ‘blond’ joke Sharkey. That’s what you get from ole Kirby when he can’t sleep and is up early in the morning. I know, I know, go back to sleep.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello all the GS buddies, F&S&GK:
Those currants looks amazing, I myself would love to try a red currant pie, or tarts, or actually anything that anyone baked, I'm not particular, just a growing boy who appears to be hungry all the time. I'll see if Mom is going to plant some currants in the garden, we could eat them off the branches, when she wasn't looking.
Well its very hot here as well, so everyone is inside in the a/c. Ruby, we are sending good thoughts to your Mom and Dad, we all hope everything went OK. Also happy anniversary to them both.
We have a long weekend coming up this weekend - Canada Day on Monday, so we need to get cracking on the unpacking! Pool man is coming today cause the pool is turning green!! Oh no, he is going to instruct us on the correct usage of chemicals and hopefully we will be all set. Mom is moving boxes from here to there and back again, the regional recycle centre has become a favoriate destination. Hopefully by this weekend we'll be somewhat sorted out. This morning on our walk Lucy got away from Mom and ran down the street to find another dog!! Good thing its a very quiet area, Mom will have to tie the leashes to herself, when we get it in our head that we want to go, its like we all have 4-wheel drive! Well gotta go, Ruby's family is in our thoughts today, lets pray for some good news!
    Martha, Riley and Lucy.

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, These photos look so beautiful with you 2 sweet girls and Laura Acuna getting those delicious, ripe red currents for Martha to make some delicious jelly! My Mom used to have those currents many years ago and might grow some more real soon! Hope you have a great day and say Hi to GK for me! We had a bad thunder storm for about 15 minutes yesterday and had thunder and lightning and about a half inch of rain in only about 5 minutes! The wind was about 25 miles an hour at that time! Ruby, sure hope your Dad is doing better and hope your Mom feels better, also! Mom and I are sending prayers your way! Maddox, you are very silly today! Hope your rain goes away and hope ours does, also! Zoe, hope you have good weather today! Kirby, get some more great rest! Was nice to hear from more of you buddies yesterday and will check back again today! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
You girls sure look like you are having fun with Laura. Red currants heh, haven't ever had one. I spit out strawberries. Mom can't believe it. Maybe a pie or tart with sugar, I would like. You must have lots and lots of freezers for all your berries. Kirby, could you hear me laughing about your blonde joke? You crack me up. Everyone thank you for the well wishes for my Dad's biopsy yesterday. I will let you know how the results come out, in no later than a week. And for their anniversary wishes, thank you. Today will be party central. I have decided what I will give them for a present---Ruby getting a bath. Yep, it is definite. I think I can, I think I can. More on that update tomorrow. And Riley told me that it was his parents anniversary too today. Great minds think alike. Happy anniversary to your parents Riley, Martha and Lucy. Glad Mom caught you Lucy. A new neighborhood, you could get lost. Have they changed the address for your identity chips to track you? Maddox, I don't think Mom and Dad could take the excitement of getting arrested, so I will hold that thought for another time. Good one though!! Brutus and Max, thank you for the address for Kilo's police department. We are going to send a note and a card. Mom loves making cards. Well, all the rest of my buddies, Abby, Jimmy, Kitty, Black Mama, Rebel, Missy, Dudley, Baby Favor, Delia, Sonya, and all else my goofy brain forgets, have a GEM of a day.
    Love & licks,
    Ruby

  • Hello Sharkey,Francesca, Ruby,Maddox, kirby,Super Dudley, Zoe and all my glue squad friends,
Red currants look yummy and it was nice of the girls to help out Laura in the kitchen. They are so bright red! Must make excellent jam.
Maddox, I wondered if you were helping with the kennel construction yesterday, thus the question on your whereabouts.I know you are a busy man.
Rebel, how are the ducklings? Zoe, hope you keep cool and have a great day! Ruby, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to your Mom and Dad and hope your papa feels better real soon. Black Mama we miss you and am sending purrrrs your way. Martha,Lucy and Riley glad to hear about your exercise and wish you all a nice day. Kirby, hope your tail is healing up. Dudley, are you staying cool indoors. Abby is trying to stay low to the floor and enjoys the a/c at the animal hospital. Delia and Kitty, hope you have a good breeze to keep cool too.
Mom is talking about a mini road trip to the Woodstock Museum this weekend. I like the '69 music. Abby says I am a flower child cat? what does that make her, a beatnick doggy?
peace, love and purrrs- Jimmy Byron Dean

  • Afternoon Girls & Glue Squad - I don't know if I would like the taste of tart currents; I can be fussy on some things. I don't think Mom has ever tried them either. I have to clarify my post from yesterday as my fat paws were too quick with the submit button and never got back it, sorry everyone. But my thoughts were with all of you. It has been hot & humid today and plan on staying cool with the a/c; outside time is limited. We could have rain later on. Happy Anniversary to Ruby's Mom & Dad; hope they have special plans-you will be giving them a great gift if you get your bath, just relax and enjoy, try it, you'll like it :) . Sending good thoughts to your dad too. Happy Anniversary to Martha, Lucy & Riley's Mom & Dad. Lucy, don't go too far, it's a new neighborhood. Kirby, good one, "current" bush-you are funny! James Dean, it's fun to look back and I'm sure Mom will have a good time. Hi to all my buddies and hope everyone stays cool and the rain stops for awhile for everyone to dry out.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • Yummy currants! and as always a helping paw from F & S!

Praying for a good biopsy report for Ruby's daddie...

Sorry for the short note...I've got company coming.
    Love to all my buddies,
    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Hello F,S,GK,Laura Acuna,Kirby,Zoe,Rebel,Maddox, Jimmy Dean,Riley,Ruby,Black Mama,Dudley, and all!

Those red currents looked very good, bet we would like a nice tart. Mom has blackberries, but they are not ready to be picked yet. I'm sure we will be great helpers when the time comes.
We had storms very early this morning (2am!) and again about 6pm tonight. Brutus headed for the basement, of course, I, Max, stayed upstairs to watched over Dad and the house. Someone has to be brave! The weather peeps are promising lower temps and clear skies this weekend. We hope it happens, this business of staying in the house and not patroling the bike trail is bogus.
    Must be off.
    Pugs and kisses
    Max....and Brutus(from the basement,haha)
