A Lesson In Sedum, Or Stonecrop

Posted by F&S

We Frenchies love teaching you about the world of plants and today's lesson is about the genus, sedum, in the Crassulaceae family.  We love these hardy plants and after reading this blog, we think you will too!

You know, Francesca, where many plants benefit from a decent rainfall, there is a family of plants that need very little water to survive.

Do you remember when Ryan planted sedum in the cracks and crevices of this stone wall? Sedums are succulents, characterized by their fleshy leaves that store the water they need to grow.

This kind of planting is called pocket gardening and sedums, also called stonecrop, love growing this way.

Last summer, Ryan tamped growing mix into the crevices, gently pushed the sedum roots in and covered them with more potting mix.

It's obvious from so much new growth and with flowers forming, that this sedum is quite content growing here.

There are hundreds of varieties of sedum and they offer foliage from many shades of green, to blue, to yellow, to red. This variegated one is especially pretty.

Flowers can be white, pink, lavender, purple, yellow, red, orange, bronze, or light green and have a star-like shape. This stonecrop will soon bear yellow flowers.

Drought tolerant sedums have a creeping nature and spread quite quickly.

Sedums can flourish in the poorest soil. In fact, poor or little soil is actually what they prefer.

It's important to know that good drainage is the key. Too much moisture, especially standing water, will kill these plants.

So, if you're looking for a lovely plant that practically takes care of itself, a creeping sedum may be the perfect specimen for you!

  • You girls!!!!
I saw the first picture of Sharkey on the wall and I thought the blog today would be about stones and how you gather the stones from the fields to make the wall. Get it, stone crop.
    Hehehehehehehe
Pretty flowers. I like the flowers on last photo. Rain, rain, rain. If this keeps up I may have to put a "pup" tent on the deck to lay out there. Ohhhh, another good one, pup tent. Gee, I think I do my best thinking in the middle of the night.
Sorry I didn't answer your question yesterday James Dean. I take a break on Thursdays. Do you know they make toothpaste for dogs that is flavored? They have chicken and they also have beef. They probably have a fish flavored one for cats. That would taste good, eh? All I know is that in dogs, if they have bad teeth that can be the cause of all sorts of health problems so I would think it would be the same for cats and that is probably why your mom wants you to have good teeth. I don't think they make greenies for cats so that is why you might have to get your teeth brushed. Heck, maybe they have all different kinds of fish toothpaste you can try. And if cats are anything like dogs, you never want to try human toothpaste. It can make you sick.
Well Glue Squad friends, I am going back to e b d. I will check in again sometime later on, much later on. Have a good weekend
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • I just love non traditional ways of gardening. Stone walls with touches of plants here and there make for such a nice visual.

    I also like mossy paths..

It's still raining here in NH, but I think the sun will make an appearance this weekend. Let's hope! :) I think I saw "Marlin" Brando swim by! :)

Happy Weekend to the critters and all the GS buddies!

  • Surprise, surprise. The rain has stopped. The sun is not out yet but it is trying to come out so I am going to beat it to the deck for much deserved outside nap time. Yeeeeeaaaaahhhh!!!!!!!

  • Good Morning F & S

Amazing how those plants can grow in a wall but I guess a wall is a place where they will get good drainage.

So how about all this rain!! Crazy I say - go rain in Colorado and help put out all those fires. I feel so bad for all those people and the animals in the forest where do they all go?

I'm sitting on mom's lap right now giving her lots of kisses. I wish she would take off from work today, we could cuddle and take lots of naps. I'm in a really lovey mood this morning - that makes mom really happy :)

Have a great weekend everyone - I'm hoping the sun comes out tomorrow so we can all enjoy some deck time :)

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
Thank for once again for a very educational and beautiful blog on the plants. This way of growing them is very unique. My favs are #1 and #2 because F & S are in them. Is G.K. pretty much staying in the air conditioning these days? Tell him hugs from Ruby.

So many of our Glue Squad Buddies are on vacation. Hello Martha, Lucy and Riley at the breeders. Just think, when you leave the breeders, you will be in a new home. Same Mom and Dad, just a new place, and you all have each other to help get adjusted. I have been missing you though. Come home to us soon. James Dean, I get my teeth brushed. With my "cage teeth" from before in my forever home, when I broke my canine tooth off, the vet said a must on the brushing. My toothpaste is chicken flavored and I loooove it. That could be a Glue Squad invention, "kitty greenies that are fish flavored." And the money could help not so fortunate kitties and doggies. It is still very hot here, and the forest fires make a terrible haze and it is no fun outside. I am still very sad on these fires and pray for everyone.

Now on to a special party type wish for all the Glue Squad Dads. I hope you all party and party and BBQ and eat, drink and be merry all weekend celebrating the GREAT DADS you all are. My Dad is so special. How many Dads work through your problems and fears, and even get nipped when you are getting over them? He is so patient and takes me on walks and loves me to pieces. Oh, and speaking of walks. You know, first I had the gentle leader leash and now have had a regular collar, well, the vet said a harness would be good, and yes, Dad put one on yesterday on the walk and I love it. Thanks Dad and I love you clear up to God. Have a GEM of a Father's Day weekend.

    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Good morning ladies,
What cool plants. The wall will really be pretty when the plants get more mature.
Nothin' at all going on here. It's so sunny & nice outside, waiting for a bit of rain.
Happy Father's Day to all my friends Dads.
    Have a great weekend everybody.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Well Mommy and Daddy are home today. They have been leaving real early and coming back in the afternoon; late afternoon. Don’t know why they don’t take me with them. On second thought I do know; I’m a pain in the butt. That’s what they keep telling me anyway. Now that I’m older, I want my bed not to rock so much. Riding keeps me from sleeping and I fuss about that. I haven’t been on the computer for two days now; can’t reach the button to turn it on. Guess my paws are too big to fit into that little spot where the button is located. I guess I could get the cat to turn it on for me. But then again, he is outside and likes to sleep through the day. That’s what I think I’ll do right now; nap. Have a good, and safe, weekend all. Happy Father’s Day.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello Frannie, Sharkey, GK and all the Glue Squaders!
The weather has been beautiful today. We got to be outside a little this morning and afternoon, but Dad had to work this afternoon and Mom is working tonight, so we are stuck in the house for now. Bummer, dude.
But, the weather is suppose great Saturday and Dad and Mom are both off work soooooo it's the great outdoors for us!!
We have the beef flavored toothpaste, but like we said yesterday, we aren't not happy campers with the teeth brushing. We are greenie dogs!
Just wonder what Martha's gardens would be like without Frannie and Sharkey supervising Ryan. Hmmmmm.

Hope everyone has a great weekend and remember to thank your Dads on Sunday!

    Pugs and kisses.

    Brutus and Max.

  • We have creeping sedum in our rocks but hubby keeps on whacking them down thinking they are weeds lol!

    Love and licks....
