Which Came First? The Color Pink or the Flower?

Posted by F&S

Springtime is always busy at the farm and it seems that whenever Martha comes home, she brings more plants for the gardens.  That means that Ryan and his crew are busy beyond measure, getting all of the regular chores done and planting, too!  Anyway, here are some interesting facts about a pretty flowering perennial called dianthus.

Francesca, I saw Ryan heading towards the summer house with a bunch if perennials to plant. Let's go check it out.

Ryan, I see that you are positioning all of the new perennials that Martha bought the other day. They look like dianthus. You know, there are numerous types of dianthus, and you can find one for almost any garden situation.

Ah, yes! These are cheddar pinks 'Firewitch,' which bloom profusely with magenta-pink flowers that have a wonderful spicy clove-like fragrance.

I can practically smell the spicy flowers now!

Ryan, it's said that the name 'pinks' comes from the serrated flower edges, which look as if cut with pinking shears. And the name of the color 'pink' is said to come from these perennials!

Also, Ryan, did you know that this dianthus' bluish-gray, compact foliage quickly forms a solid mat?

And because of that, it makes for an excellent ground cover or even a rock garden plant.

Sharkey, Ryan is planting groupings of different varieties of dianthus. I see one called 'Tiny Rubies' and another called 'Raspberry Surprise.' Don't they have great names?

Sharkey, why don't we watch from the summer house terrace, so we don't get in Ryan's way. It's obvious he's on one of his planting streaks and doesn't care to be interfered with. You know how busy spring is around here!

  • I love the name 'cheddar pinks'! :)

I see the garden is coming together nicely.

Not a weed in the bunch! :)

Continued Spring like weather here in NH. However, no rain in sight, which is causing some concern.

    Happy weekend to all!

  • Good morning everyone,
First let me say pre Happy Birthday to Lucy. I know your real day is Saturday but sometimes the comments aren't posted over the weekend so I was thinking that if you come back on the DW on Saturday then you can read all the messages from Friday wishing you a Happy Birthday and then they will mean more to you. Good idea? Yeah, I thought so too.
It is supposed to be a nice weekend regarding the weather. Might be a little warm for chows but it is real cool out now so you know where I am headed. But before I do I want to tell the girls that I think that color pink would be a real pretty color on both of them. Maybe a real nice bright pink hoodie. Think it over and see what Martha says. Hehehehehehehehe
Love to all and have a great weekend

PS. - who is Sally? A new Glue squad member? Does she know to be a GS peep, she has to comment on a regular basis? I mean, this is an elite club. To get in you have to be approved and promise you will post on a regular basis which means at least 3-4 times a week unless you are on vacation or your computer is broken. So Ms. Sally, tell us about yourself please. Pets names, what they are, etc. how do you feel about a dog who gets into the TP or a dog who digs holes all over the yard? We need to know these things. Hehehehehehehe

  • Had to sing Happy Birthday to Lucy Jack before I commented. Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear Lucy,Happy Birthday to YOOOOOOOOU...and many more. Happy Birthday tomorrow Lucy. We have to start celebrating today, so I had to sing. I will be back later after breakfast to comment, but I hope you have a great #5 and a fun pizza party with your family.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Good Morning F & S

Happy Birthday Lucy!!! I hope you have a wonderful day tomorrow and get lots of presents :)

F & S I can only imagine how busy it must be at the farm come Spring. I know at our house it gets crazy, Mom tries to get everything in so she can sit back and enjoy the yard.

Beautiful weekend is expected here in New Jersey I'm hoping for lots of deck time. The cushions are all out on the chase lounges so I'm going to work on my tan. Mom is playing golf tomorrow but promised we would have Sunday to spend together. Dad said he'll heat the pool so maybe I'll take a swim - NOT - I hate to swim.....

    Have a great weekend everyone!!

    Zoe

  • Good morning ladies,
"Busy beyond measure" For Sure! Oh, but the farm looks fantastic. The Dianthus will be fun to watch. Mimi wants to know if they are hard to contain. She's battling with vinca vine. It's so hard to get rid of even though it has pretty blue flowers.
Now to GS business.. another weekend B-Day!
Happy Birthday to you, Lucy Jack! Have a great one!
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
What lovely flowers will be blooming from these Dianthus. I must send my crew to the garden center to pick me up some. I will start planting soon. You know we had 8 inches on snow this week and some still is on the ground. Dad can't till the garden yet---it is mud. Maybe it will dry out soon for him to get going. We have Blueberries---yummo, and Basil plants waiting to be planted. I hear Mom cans Dill Pickles and Dilly Green Beans. This is going to be great. And I heard, here in Colorado that in the Fall, Peaches and Apples are plentiful from our Western Slope. New flowers, fruits and veggies...who knows I might even acquire a taste for more of the fruits and veggies. Now on to party central. I am planning to celebrate Lucy's b-day along with Derby Day. Mom says everyone wears fancy hats on Derby Day. We will see about that one. Hehehehehe I will leave the hat wearing up to Baby Favor and Millie and Roxy. Take photos Kathi and send them if they wear some beauties. Sally, welcome and double welcome. Tell us about yourself and your kids. I heard rumors of a Frenchie in your midst, and that you could live near me. Mom might be on your doorstep for Frenchie hugs. Tell me, tell me, tell me. Now Molly and Jake I wonder where art thou----at the spa??? Abby, at the duck pond, Rebel, watching ducks, Dudley on walks, Maddox, Kirby and Missy on deck time (could this be a Chow Fun Friday?), Baby Favor and Zoe giving big Frenchie kisses, Lucy, Martha and Riley at birthday party central, Sonya is probably sipping Mint Julips watching the Derby this weekend, Delia, Kitty and Sherlock James Dean are all having a purrrrfect time. May everyone have a GEM of a weekend and I send hugs and more hugs.
    Love,
    Ruby

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Boy am I in trouble now with Maddox. Mommy and Daddy have been away so I won’t be making the required three or four post this week. How about me making two today; that’ll give me three for the week? Not a good idea. Oh, I’ll bet that anyone who makes postings on a regular basis, can be excused for missing a few epically when you don’t have use of the computer. Daddy has someone coming to learn how to set up the Pinewood Derby track Daddy has. I saw in the paper that there is a Derby this tomorrow in Kentucky; probably be using Daddy’s track. Daddy says, “Horses Kirby, horses.” Oh, it’s that kind of a race; love horses don’t you? Well, have a good, and safe weekend, all. Don’t forget the running for the roses on Saturday.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Kirby, Kirby, Kirby,
You were on the DW way before I was. I think you are safe. I just meant to post on a regular basis. We all have things we have going on and can't post every day and that is fine. Sally, oh Sally, where are you? We are a very very special group. We are very supportive of one another and for us to do that, we like to read each others comments to see what we are all up to or if someone needs extra support, wish a happy birthday or just to laugh at the bad stuff they did. I won't mention any names here so the guilty are protected. Hehehehehehe. So Ms. Sally, what part of the country do you live in? Most importantly, do you adore chows? I adore chows. Hehehehehehe. My bad.
    Love everyone,
    Maddox

  • Late checking in. Happy Pre-5th Birthday to Lucy Jack on Saturday. I hope your weekend is filled with love and belly rubs.

Welcome aboard Miss Sally, do join the DW party!

Lynn just sent this to me and I am so sad that our beloved and wonderfully naughty girl Cora-Belle has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. Monday will be a proper day to pay respects and honor our girl Cora-Belle.

  • Oh Cora-Belle. You went to the bridge. I miss you already. Karen is crying her eyes out. She loved you so very much. We all did. James and Lucinda, you were the best patents that beautiful cattle dog could have. Please stay on the Daily Wag. Cora -Belle was a Glue Squad member to the core. I hope all the members bark the loudest they ever barked in their lives so Cora-Belle can hear it at the bridge. Basil, take good care of our precious girl.
Love you always and forever Cora-Belle. You too James and Lucinda
    Maddox and Karen

  • Cora Belle, Cora Belle, I miss you so, but I know you are with Basil and Herman the Cat and Precious and all the other angels. I have started doing some barking and digging in your name, but Mom is crying and crying. Basil loved you so, and you were my heroine. I howled even in your memory. You are a part of our lives forever, and have no fear, the feral Black Cat is an official Glue Squad Member. I love cats. Lucinda and James, Mom is toasting to you, wonderful parents with the closest she could find to a Maple Bar. I love you Cora Belle, now and forever. My love will reach you in the heavens.
Love and licks and many barks,
    Ruby

  • Hi Cora-Belle, Lucinda, James,& Black Mama, My Mom and I are so sad to hear that you are gone and we will miss you forever! You were our favorite beautiful cattle dog who did so many fun things you always shared with us! I will try my hardest to be naughty today in your honor! I already did a lot of loud barking this morning trying to reach you and I hope you heard me! How nice that Basil and my friend Cricket met you on the Rainbow Bridge! I know that Mom and I will love to see your feral cat pal, Black Mama very soon because we both love cats! Lucinda and James, we will love to hear from you anytime and thank you for telling us about our great friend Cora-Belle!!! Love, Dudley Do Right & Jan PS I'm barking again! XOXOXOXO+

  • Hi Lucinda & James, please accept our deepest sympathy on the passing of Cora Belle. She will be greatly missed on the DW and all her stories will be remembered leaving a smile or two for all of us. You were wonderful and very loving towards Cora Belle and it was reflected in all your words and deeds. Please stay with the Glue Squad, we are here with lots of hugs and support.

    Love,
    Missy Chow & Meg
    xoxo

PS Tell us about Black Mama :) when you're ready, okay??

  • Welcome Black Mamma,
If Cora-Belle wanted you to take her place on the Glue Squad, well, she must have liked you a lot So, do you like maple bars? I wonder how Lucinda is going to get a sweater vest on you if you are feral. Karen is still crying over Cora-Belle. It is just so sad. I hope Zoe's mom let's her rip up the TP in honor of Cora-Belle. I hope Ruby gets to dig a hole to China in honor of Cora-Belle. That would be real bad and she would like that. I will have to think of what I am going to do on her behalf. I will be thinking all night long about what to do. It has to be something really really bad. What are the rest of you doing in the way of bad behavior to honor our sweet Cora-Belle?
    Love to all,
    Maddox
